Hi All!! Lol I have not been on this page since my surgery date. Want to see how other DSers are doing they had a revision from sleeve last July. It has been an adventure for sure. I am down 75 pounds so far. Lots of hard work, but loving it.

I am working towards my surgery. I have to admit that I have kind of gone off the deep end eating everything that I feel I won't be able to eat after the surgery. It has only been in the past few weeks that I decided to actually take this seriously. A few years ago, I tried HCG shots. Lost over 50lbs. Put the weight back on in about six months. Did it again. Same results. I just couldn't maintain. That is what worries me the most. I can do this for awhile, but long-term? I have a really thin daughter who eats everything and an overweight husband who couldn't care less about eating healthy and hates most of the "healthy" foods I eat. That is a serious challenge. I have over 200lbs. to lose to meet my goal weight. That is really depressing. My doctor refuses to consider doing a gastric bypass and will only do the sleeve because I am not diabetic. I do have terrible acid reflux at times, but she wouldn't even talk to me about this. My husband totally wants me to get the surgery, but I think his reasons are selfish. Not sure if he is doing this as a way for me to prove that even if I lose the weight, I won't leave him... as a kind of power trip thing. My biggest fear is that he will try to constantly sabotage me, or use my not being able to enjoy food out with him to try to make me feel like I owe him whatever he wants from me as recompense for altering our lifestyle now. I am only 3 years from retirement (need 30 years) and finishing a degree so that I can change my job to something more challenging. Once I get my retirement and finish my degree, I want to feel confident to go seek a position and being obese does not give me the confidence. (I get judged way too much as being dumb for letting myself become overweight.) Anyhow, I am super super nervous about this surgery and all that will change in my life because of this.

Any April Surgery Dates?

Just had bypass yesterday 4/17. In hospital till weds -
Like the original poster, I was curious what happened with the "unused" part of the stomach. The part of the stomach sectioned off is in a 24/7 fasting state. It will never see food again in it's bypassed state. As for the pouch, yes. Vitamins are critical. I took them preop and will start chewables at my 2 week mark tomorrow. As well as my soft foods phase. I won't fast my new little stomach intentionally. Following doctor's orders all the way but I can't promise I won't try it down the road if need be.

My bypass surgery was 2/14 and I thought my hunger was supposed to supress after surgery but I am always hungry. And before you say it not head hungry. I know what that is like. I am talking real hunger. The kind where I just want food... any food. Unfortunately when it comes to meals I still can only take about 4 bites before I am full... momentarily. Then an hour or so later I am back to being hungry. What gives? Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

One week out of gastric bypass surgery, I was a bit down. Tired, sore... so decided to watch something to lift my mood on TV. What normally would make me smile, chuckle or laugh wasn't happening. I thought. Oh no! Have I lost my sense of humor already with all of the hormonal changes happening? Shirley not Post whatever makes you happy. I'm sure many here would love to smile with you

I haven't heard that, but who knows? It might be true. I know bypassers are susceptible to vitamin deficiencies, though, because of the malabsorption. That's why it's critical for us to keep on top of our supplements - the consequences of slacking off are more severe for us than they are for sleevers. EDITED TO ADD: I'm not really sure about fasting in general, though. I know the malabsorption the first few months is super strong - you malasorb calories in addition to nutrients. Unfortunately, the malabsorption of calories seems to go away after a year or two - whereas the malabsorption of nutrients stays. I had a 20 lb regain in year 3 (which is unfortunately very common - usually 10-20 lbs), and I currently struggle to keep my weight where it is, so the part of fasting where you lose weight isn't true - or at least not for me. But maybe he meant for the first year or two? Or was referring specifically to nutrients ? Not sure.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I recently heard a bariatric surgeon say that bypassing the stomach leaves it in a 24/7 fasting state. I'm big on all the benefits of fasting so knowing that fact was exciting to me. I'd love to hear a more in depth teaching on the subject along with reestablishing a healthy microbiome, setpoint etc. via surgery.

yep - the others are right - they're needed for digestion. And yes - bypass is technically reversible, although they don't do it unless you have serious issues that can't be resolve any other way.

A Fib and Gastric Bypass
MarisAthena replied to MountainClover's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I know that I am late to this topic, but as a person that was newly diagnosed with AFib and has the surgery scheduled for 6/5/23, I think I understand the subject well. There is solid research coming from Australia that shows that AFib reverses or at least improves after drastic weight loss. This is what my Mayo Clinic cardiologist told me. I hesitated for years to get a gastric bypass but after learning this aspect, I scheduled my gastric bypass surgery. I talked to my gastric surgeon, he knows I have Afib and that I take medication for it and there are no issues whatsoever. I am sure he is consulting with my cardiologist. I wish you the best, this gastric bypass surgery might save us from Afib at least for some years. Let’s hope that the Aussies are 100% correct! 😀 -
I had my bypass five days ago and today has been the first really hard day. I woke up this morning and on auto pilot chugged a bunch of ice water like I normally would. My belly instantly let me know I messed up. I've been bloated and in pain most of the day as a result and honestly...I just want some freaking food. I'm lusting over a scrambled egg, cottage cheese, anything other than shakes or strained soup with protein powder. I hate that I feel sorry for myself right now! Sorry for being such a downer, but I would really appreciate some encouraging words right now from someone who understands.

Hey all. I'm having RNY in a few weeks. My question is, do they ever take out the bypassed portion of the stomach and intestines or always leave them in? Why leave them if they're not used?

I am on day 4 after bypass and tried my decaf coffee with coffee mate and threw it up. Then for lunch I tried some strawberry protein shake and threw it up. I have kept down chicken broth, clear protein drin, hot tea, water with crystal light and sugar free jello, I am think maybe the coffee mate and the protein shake is too rich yet. Afraid to try the greek yogurt or pudding yet. Did anyone else have this

Anti-Inflammation medication?
RickM replied to RaiderRhode's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah, as Arabesque said, NSAIDs are a big no no with your bypass, but better tolerated with a sleeve (our doc doesn't even restrict it to occasional use like that, though it's still a good idea to restrict it.) It is definitely a check with your surgeon thing, as they will differ as to what their experience tells them - some are OK with NSAIDs for an occasional day's use and many aren't, but a month would very likely be a big NONO. There are COX2 inhibitors like meloxocam that might help, they tend to be somewhat better than common NSAIDs on the stomach, but not entirely safe. The narcotics are a lot more restricted than they used to be, even at low doses, so those may or may not be appropriate these days. The warm rinses help with open tissue problems (like recent incisions or cavity) but this is likely more inflammation which tends to respond better to cold - try ice packs (or a bag of frozen peas) around the area for 10-15 minutes at a time in addition to the Tylenol until you can get a reading from your surgeon. -

I’m 2 1/2 years out from Bypass. Highest 227, lowest 138 and I settled at 142-144. I just had a recent weight gain for the first time and saw 153. Went back to surgeon, scheduled a nutrition appointment and trying phentremine for the first time. Back at 151 and this is part of expected maintenance. I can eat/drink just about everything except for bread, only in small amounts. Working on bringing some numbers back down and I know I have all the tools to do it. -

Hi, I am 5 wks RNY post op. Let me start by saying I started this journey in 2009 getting a gastric band. My start weight was 275lbs, I’m 5’3. In 2014 I had a revision to a gastric sleeve because of esophageal distress. I had a hard time getting below 200LBS with both of this procedures. Once I was below 200 I hovered over 185-195. In 2019 I lost more weight and was down to 157lbs. My original goal weight was 175, hoping for 150lbs. In the fall on 2018 I stopped working due to heath issues and I didn’t apply for disability until the spring of 2019. As a result of this dramatic change I became depressed and shut in. Then the pandemic happened , I became more depressed, my weight just went through the roof. Although I still didn’t eat a lot I ate unhealthy. Durning this time you could get anything delivered to your door, I got up to 235lbs. I also began to have severe reflux. I went to see a GI doctor who ran tests and found that my reflux was very severe and my hiatal hernia was back and bigger. I had it fixed with the band surgery in 2009. Gi recommendation was to have a revision to a RNY. I had to go through the process all over again, nutrition, psychology and pre op diet. On March 7th 2023 I had my revision surgery. The surgery went well , it was a little longer due to difficulty repairing my hiatal hernia. Post op I had urine retention, I had to go home with a Foley catheter. That lasted for 3 weeks. So my last start weight was 235lbs, SW 219; now 207lbs. I am not losing any more weight for about two weeks. I am in the mushy/soft stage. I had a hard time at first getting enough fluids in and getting my protein goals. Protein was a challenge during the next stages because I couldn’t eat or drink a lot. The last week or so I had some foods not go down well, had some vomiting. Also had a problem with either dehydration or hypoglycemia in the morning if I don’t eat or drink something early; can’t wait to 10 or 11am which I am used to. Not a great feeling. Either I am not eating enough protein/food or I need to add exercise to my journey, I did join a gym. I know my weight loss will be slower than most people due to revision but I think I am in that can’t get below 200 funk. I still want to be healthy at 170lbs. The journey continues!! -
Hey. Hope you’re doing alright. I just got my revision from band to sleeve. I had the band for 13 years. Many times I lost and gained. Got super fit, got chubby, then I let it go and got fat. Lots of feeling that you’re talking about. After all these years, the best advice I’d give myself is not get back to basics and all that stuff, it’s let go of the shame. Don’t carry that dead weight of “your feelings” and you can just pick right back up. That’s my own advice. Just writing it down. Maybe it’ll resonate with you.

Mo'Nique replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Good afternoon love! Just wanted to reply to your comment and share a bit of my journey with u. I had a revision in December from a VBG(first weight loss surgery approved) in 2004 to a gastric bypass do to esophogus issues, heartburn and major weight gain. I lost 46lbs after revision. The vitamins I see you posted are great but expensive. I have blood check up every 3 months have been amazing and i take a Bariatric vitamin from amazon. 16.77 month. My health is fabulous. Look into amzon for vitamins love. It will really save you money and they work just as well. Please take your daily calcuim after revision and you will be just fine. Good luck and God Bless you -
New to the group Vsg to bypass
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to kweenSash's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi everyone!!! I just got cleared (due to a lot of sleeve complications) to have my revision to bypass. I have GERD, gastritis, esophagitis and a TON of polyps I've had to have removed (a surgery every month since January, last one was yesterday) because of the high PPI I've had to take long term due to the GERD. A little nervous about complications, stricture, food getting stuck, etc... How has it been for all of you that had revisions? -
I'm finally cleared for my revision, and I have a question
SleeveToBypass2023 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm looking at the vitamins online and I was wondering if those of you that either originally had the bypass, or those who revised to it, can tell me which of these looks better? I know vitamin needs for bypass are different than the sleeve. Thanks!! https://www.bariatricadvantage.com/item/ultra-multivitamin https://www.barilife.com/product/just-one-chewable-once-daily-bariatric-multivitamin-iron/ PS - I will be adding additional biotin to whatever vitamins I end up with. like I do now. Just throwing that out there because neither of these provide the amount my surgeon recommends. -
Today is surgery number............ it doesn't matter. It's a lot.

Surgery went well. Had a bit of bleeding but the rest of the polyps and nodules are gone and I'm FINALLY cleared for my revision surgery. It was the biggest of all the surgeries because he wanted to get everything in this 1 surgery instead of bringing me back again. My throat hurts and I'm having difficulty eating soup because it hurts my stomach. Once that passes, I'll be able to eat normally. No exercising today or tomorrow, and Sunday is an easy work out day. Spoke to my primary doctor and she went over the labs and CT scan and said she's referring me to a gyno for the uterine fibroid. She said the other labs are only slightly outside the normal range and nothing to worry about at this point but will be watched. She said the large liver is normal for people who were morbidly obese. She said it's enlarged but actually looks like it's getting smaller from what it was before my sleeve. So all of that is ok and will just be watched to make sure all the numbers keep heading in the right direction. -
Anti-Inflammation medication?
Arabesque replied to RaiderRhode's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wisdom teeth pain is terrible. Keep ringing your team. I have a sleeve and my surgeon allowed me to have a NSAID occasionally (one at a time & not continuous days) from after my second year. But I believe the no NSAIDS rule is stricter for bypass & you’re only such a short time post surgery. You could always try a shot of vodka or scotch. I mean, shockingly now, they used to give teething babies a rum soaked cloth to suck until mid the last century. What about freezing a wet cloth & applying it to your gums or freezing fruit. Try googling natural baby teething remedies for other ideas. Your wisdom teeth coming through is really the same experience. -
Lbs lost in 2 week pre-op phase?
Noramcd replied to longhaul68's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my first bypass in November 2019. I did the dieting for 6 mos pre op and lost 50lb. Then I Lost another 18 during 2 week liquid diet. I started at 365. I assume everyone get lots of liquids pushed IV while at the hospital. When they weighed me after surgery I had gained 14 lbs. I’m freaking out going what did you do to me. Thank goodness my Doctor and nurses were great. Calmed me down quickly explaining why the gain. This week I had to have revision surgery as my pouch staples came undone. I didn’t lose near what I needed. Or thought I should of, but am reminding myself that it is a journey. I got a 2nd chance to finish what I started. Love yourself for being brave enough to take this step. I’m 250 now. -

Anyway, the point is, it's surgery day and I'm trying not to get sick at the last minute and HERE WE ARE with the temperature at a high of 46 when we've been in the low to mid 80s the last 4 days!!!!! Colorado sucks. Went to the ER Wednesday night for insane abdominal pain and vomiting. 5 hours, lots of blood work, and a CT scan later, and there's no appendicitis, no intestinal blockage, no bowel blocks, and no sleeve leaks or rupture. What I DO have is a very large uterine fibroid that the doctor thinks might be causing the pain. Incidentally, I also saw from my blood work is my liver is enlarged and my kidneys and pancreas don't look to be functioning completely normally. Yay. This afternoon I have the surgery to remove the nodules from my duodenum. Wish me luck!!! Hopefully it's the last one and then I can be cleared for my revision from sleeve to bypass and then get back to living my life. In the meantime, guess I'll be looking into what can be done about the rest of this crap. So tired of there always being SOMETHING going on with my body.
