    Cereal

I haven't eaten a bowl of cereal as a meal since I had surgery since my protein requirements are so high (higher than most because I malabsorb it), but I do occasionally sprinkle 1/4 C or so of Trader Joe's High Fiber cereal or Kashi's Go Lean granola on my yogurt sometimes.

    Cereal

I've never been much of a cereal eater, even before surgery. If I want breakfast food, I'll usually have something like eggs (or egg bites) and chicken sausage, or Greek yogurt, or a protein bar. Occasionally protein oatmeal. There are some low-carb/keto cereals on the market with mixed reviews, so you could try those. They can be pretty expensive, though. Somebody in a keto forum recommended a brand called Wonderworks that's available at Target and Walmart.

    Cereal

I have trouble getting in my 70-80 grams of protein per day if I don’t start off with a protein heavy breakfast. Cereal won’t do it for me. Most days breakfast for me is a premier protein shake mixed with cold brew coffee. Occasionally I have Greek yogurt or eggs & bacon.
  4. I’ve experienced a few times where I need to rush to the bathroom after eating. It was very obvious last night it was due to eating a small amount of nonfat (but w/sugar) frozen yogurt. I guess I thought dumping syndrome was super painful? My experience is not painful but it does involve the need to immediately go to the bathroom. Is that one type of dumping syndrome?
  5. I'll be six weeks out next Monday. The first few weeks do suck. I never got even close to my daily protein and fluids for several weeks. I tried so many different things and just felt like nothing tasted good!! One way that I get about half of my daily protein is to make a smoothie for breakfast. I mix 1/2 cup of frozen strawberries, a scoop of unflavored protein powder (I like the genepro), a couple of dollops of strawberry cheesecake greek yogurt, 2/3 cup of the fairlife milk and a little zero calorie sweetener. I have a Ninja blender and that really works great! f you can tolerate a smoothie at this point that might help with the protein and also add to your daily fluids! I also added the unflavored protein powder to things like broth, cream of chicken broth, no sugar added hot chocolate, sugar free chocolate pudding, etc. I know bone broth has a good amount of protein if you like that. Not eating with your family is really hard. I just keep telling myself that this is not forever and things will be better soon!! Loosing my extra weight is motivation for me!! The hives could be from stress to tell you the truth! My daughter gets hives when she is REALLY stressed. The dr told her to take pepcid. Works like a charm! Keep drinking what ever tastes good to u and know that things will turn around soon!!! Oh, sugar free popsicles and no sugar added fudge bars are really good too!!! You can do this!!!!!

    Food is disgusting

I had the bypass 6 months ago. For the first month, I couldn't even drink water without feeling sick. I had to get a script for a nausea patch that is worn behind the ear. I could only drink Peppermint tea. By the second month, I could only eat Cream of Wheat, and a little bit of Oatmeal. I couldn't drink Protein drinks until my 4th to 5th month, and even now, I didn't drink them very often. I recently tried the Carmel flavored Fairlife, and I do like that one. I eat raw, unsalted almonds, and walnuts if I get hungry between meals. It is my go to food. I haven't had a problem with it. Have you tried to eat Cottage Cheese? I eat that instead of yogurt, because I don't like yogurt, and it has more protein. I still have a lot of mucus when I eat. I have to spit after almost every bite I take. I asked the doc about it, and they didn't seem concerned. Oh, and if my hubby cooked anything, the smell would make me feel so sick, I would have to go outside to get air.
  7. So I'm at a loss, the smell of food now makes me sick to my stomach especially when my family eats fast food. I struggled with eating because everything would come up, found out I had a small stricture. Had the procedure last week and have been trying to eat but nothing. Everything I've tried has come back up again and it tastes disgusting I mean just vile. The only thing that stayed down was refried beans from a local Mexican restaurant and when I eat Greek yogurt but I'm getting tired of it. I cant even drink my protein drinks they make me throw up mucus. I know this won't last for ever but I have no clue what to do and I'm hungry. Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice? Before Surgery Shopping List

I used the 2-ounce disposable cups right after surgery, first to measure out protein shakes (you have to sip really slowly for the first couple of weeks, so it's best to track your intake 1 or 2 ounces at a time), and also to portion out purees and soft foods. Your portion size for purees and soft foods is about 2 ounces, so you can measure out individual portions of stuff like yogurt, cottage cheese, mashed cauliflower, applesauce, pudding, Jello, etc. I still use them all the time now for meal prep. I like to make a big batch of something and split it up into individual servings to freeze. You can fit 8-10 in a quart-size Ziploc bag. I have a freezer full of these containers with individual servings of turkey meat sauce, Mexican shredded chicken, Asian chicken, BBQ chicken, black beans, salsa, raspberry puree, and strawberry puree. That gives me tons of easy meals, like: Mexican chicken + salad, Asian chicken + cauliflower rice & veggies, BBQ chicken + green beans, turkey meat sauce + ricotta bake, turkey meat sauce + spaghetti squash, Greek yogurt + raspberry puree, etc. (The black beans and salsa are just so they don't go bad before I use a whole container and I can just thaw a little at a time.) I also use them as condiment cups, like ranch dip for veggies, or salad dressing to bring to work, or for small amounts of toppings like parmesan cheese or nuts. They also work as pill holders (I mostly use a pill organizer -- another great thing to have: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072VQY7M7/ -- but sometimes I don't want to bring the whole day's worth of pills with me).

    Any March 2021 Sleeve Patients?

Hello. I had the cursed lap band too! It never slipped but I ended up with a hiatal hernia, a gastric polyp, AND my esophagus had begun to dilate. We tried didn't we? Who knew it would be such a better choice to have a large portion of the stomach removed rather than have a tube put around it? The one I was scared most of was the safer choice! I had my sleeve FEB 10TH. I had band removed November 2019 with hiatal hernia repair. That surgery hurt so much worse than this sleeve it's unreal. Fixing the hernia and removing the band required a lot of muscle cutting. So here I am. Lost 16 pounds before surgery (over 4 weeks by 2 weeks eating extremely clean then 2 weeks of required liquids only) I have lost 12 more pounds since surgery morning. 28# total. Wow, being off of sugary foods, sodas, carbs, all of that junk does work! I hope you find yourself much more comfortable after this surgery than your lap band one!! I am tolerating my liquid diet so much better than I did post lap band surgery! Stick to your surgeon's guidelines 100% !! Be true to that 2 week pre op liquid diet! I truly believe it helped my surgery go better! We were a bit worried from scar tissue from lap band so WE ARE MORE LIKELY FOR A LEAK UNLESS WE STICK TO THE RULES ❤❤❤ I know you will have the discipline and you CAN do this because you had to learn discipline with your band. Also, I recommend Collagen Protein (unflavored) for your liquids you do OTHER than your protein drinks. Collagen is very healing and nourishing to skin and hair and helps new cell turnover. Collagen Peptide protein tastes great and mixes easily in a little warm water....then add your milk and some ice. I use ORGAIN brand unflavored. I add to broth, soups, yogurt, pudding, jello. It dissolves well and does not effect flavor at all. GODBLESS (or whoever you belive in) and you are going to be happy! Thank God liquid diet is temporary !!! So excited for you to kick butt !!!!!

3 weeks post op - The good and the bad

I'm 23 days post sleeve and still on pureed. Basically all I eat are eggs, oatmeal, tuna salad, and oikos triple zero yogurt. I cannot wait to get on soft foods in a week. As far as water, right now I can have 3 sips at a time and drink 3-4 bottles of water or protein2o, no chugs though. Like you, I do feel dizzy at times when getting up or turning a corner, but not bad enough to feel like I'll faint. I kind of just pause for a moment. I have a lot of energy and feel great and am looking forward to going to the gym next week. My biggest issues right now are lack of bowel movement, skin dryness, and a crazy headache (think its PMS related though). What are you eating in the soft foods stage?

    Let’s talk protein shakes!

Thanks Big Sue (although it looks like Little Sue is a better fit...congrats!) I will definitely look into those Built bars! I LOVE chocolate coconut!! Thank you! P.S. I never thought of adding the protein powder to my Greek yogurt! Hmmm, I’m going to give that a try too!

    Let’s talk protein shakes!

Before my surgery, I ordered a bunch of samples of protein shakes, and I also ended up liking IdealLean the best. I've purchased some tubs from them (chocolate brownie, birthday cake, and chocolate coconut). It is also relatively inexpensive (they inflate their "regular" price, so it's always "on sale"). I like to mix the birthday cake protein into Greek yogurt. I recently got a sample pack of LadyBoss Lean, and it is quite tasty, but I don't think I'll buy any more because it's expensive and the macros aren't as good as IdealLean. As for protein bars, I am OBSESSED with Built Bars. They are amazing. They taste like candy bars. Every time I bite into one, I marvel at how it's possible for something kinda healthy to taste so incredible. They have 18 regular flavors and they frequently put out limited release flavors. Their two newest ones, cookie dough and coconut brownie chunk, are the best ones yet. There are some people who don't like the texture, so I'd recommend trying one box before you stock up on multiple cases, but I love love love them. I've also heard good things about Alani Nu protein bars and FitFactor protein bars, but I haven't tried them because I already have over 300 Built bars in my house and don't need to be buying any more protein bars right now.😁

    Night time eating

late afternoon is my problem time. I'll start grazing and then eat dinner on top of that. Nights aren't as challenging for me (although they can be sometimes...), but i know they can be a problem time for a lot of people. what I've done more often lately (and should do it even more often) to manage my late afternoon challenging time is to just have a protein shake for breakfast (instead of a regular breakfast), then eat breakfast around 11;00, which means I don't eat lunch until like 1:30 or 2:00. Then I can usually make it until dinner - although sometimes I'll end up having a snack or around 4:00 - or if I'm really famished, I'll just eat dinner at 4:00 and have my afternoon snack around 7:00 pm. Shifting things around like this will sometimes do the trick. (it helps that I'm retired and am home most of the time) in addition, I almost always have grapes, raw veggies with a Greek-yogurt based dip, sugar free Jello, and sugar free popsicles in the house, so that if I do lose control, at least I have some choices that won't cause much damage.
  15. Hi! The vitamins were a bit of a challenge at first for me. I think alot of (but not all) people have this experience?) My prescribed vitamin regimen was as follows: 1x multi tablet (regular size), 3x calcium tablets (horse pill size!) 3x vitamin D tablets (teeny tiny) 1x B12 chew-able (regular size) 1x Iron tablet (regular size) 1x Vitamin A tablet (teeny tiny) The teeny tiny tabs were easy to get down, no issues The regular size tabs were a bit of a challenge. I tried using a pill cutter to make them smaller, but the resulting powder make me gag. Same when I tried crushing them. The horse pill calcium tab was the worst. Actually, I take that back...the chew-able B12 one was the worst. It was like a grape-flavoured chewable Flintstone vitamin and was disgusting to me. Further, the multi and the Iron made me nauseous almost immediately after taking them. I was rarely successful in getting all what i was supposed to the first 1-4 weeks. By month 3-4, after some trial and error, I finally got a regimen down that I was able to sustain: Dropped the iron (my labs showed I didn't need it, plus it was making me sick) Changed the multi to a low iron one (see above) Switched to B12 drops, but then my labs showed I didn't need it so that eventually dropped. Started taking my calcium horse pills with a spoonful of yogurt and that made it much better...but then I discovered Calcium chews and loved them. They were chocolate flavoured and had the consistency of one of those square caramels. Yum. Vitamin A was dropped as didn't need those either. Vitamin D was no change, I had no issues with them from the beginning. I'm 2+ years post op now, and....not advocating this in any way...I pretty much stopped taking all my supplements about a year ago. No real reason other than laziness/boredom. I had satisfactory labs in all my followups up to that point, and had 2 more after that that continued to show I am A-ok. Even my bone density check last November was better than the baseline one I took 2 years ago (which sorta surprised me given all the weight loss as well as my age).

    Last week surgeries

I had surgery on February 19th. I have no pain but I am uncomfortable! My stomach gurgles but I don’t know if that means I’m hungry or if it’s gas. I’m trying to get in all the liquids I can, I all of a sudden don’t like jello (I loved it before surgery). I’d love to try protein shakes, yogurt or thinned out oatmeal but I’m only 4 days post op. I have no energy so I lay or sit around with added walking inside the house. My butt actually hurts from laying/sitting so much. Before surgery I wore glasses all the time since surgery everything is blurring when I wear them. I asked about it in the hospital before I was discharged, was told that it should go away as it could be from the anesthesia.

Protein drinks after 6 months PO

I'm 7 months out and I still use protein shakes/powder. I get most of my protein from food, but I usually have half a scoop of protein powder or 2-3 ounces of ready-to-drink protein shake every day. Sometimes I mix it into food (like yogurt or protein oatmeal), but my favorite thing to do is mix it with Crio Bru (brewed cacao beans), some almond milk, and sugar-free flavored syrups for a flavored hot cocoa with 10 grams of protein. (A lot of people like to do the same thing with coffee, but I don't like coffee.)

    Lactose Intolerant?

lactose intolerance is not uncommon after bariatric surgery. Sometimes it's only temporary -- and sometimes it's not. Some lactose intolerant people can tolerate aged or fermented dairy products - like aged cheese or yogurt - but others can't. I guess it depends on how sensitive you are to lactose - sounds like you're very sensitive to it...

Protein drinks after 6 months PO

Hopefully by 6 months out we're not living on them, but protein shakes can still be useful. They are good when you're short on time or on-the-go. Or when you're far from your protein goal but not really hungry enough to eat meat, cheese, yogurt, etc. To switch it up, I add a dash of Jordan's Skinny Syrups to my Evolve protein shakes and warm them up. They're plant-based, so they don't curdle or thicken from being heated. Sometimes I'll sprinkle nutmeg on top. It's like a sweet, flavored latte but without the coffee. One of my favorite winter treats.
  20. I've been purchasing Torani and DaVinci sugar-free syrups for a while, and I found another brand, Jordan's Skinny Syrups, on Amazon. I decided to try it out and I purchased this Caramel Collection Trio with Caramel Pecan, Salted Caramel, and Caramel Vanilla Creme: https://amazon.com/Jordans-Skinny-Syrups-Caramel-Collection/dp/B07B8PDS4V I loved these so much that I wanted to try some more flavors, and they have A TON. Some are available on Amazon, and I've heard that Home Goods and TJ Maxx have them for a great price ($3.99), but I don't live near either of those stores, so I went to their web site (http://SkinnyMixes.com) and... I went a little crazy! They were having a 25% off sale at the time, and I bought 13 different flavors for a total of $52.22 (including shipping) -- that's $4.02/bottle. Not bad! Here's what I got: 6-bottle Dessert Sampler Peanut Butter Cup Glazed Donut Mint Chocolate Chip Chocolate Coconut Macaron Iced Cinnamon Roll Caramel Creme Cheesecake Hazelnut Chocolate Caramel Truffle Caramel Fudge Waffle Cone Caramel Pecan (this was my favorite from the Caramel Collection Trio, so I had to get more!) Maple Bourbon Pecan Raspberry Cherry I can't wait to try them all! I mainly use flavored syrups in tea and Crio Bru (brewed cacao). I don't like coffee, but I think most people use them in coffee to make fancy Starbucks-like flavored coffee drinks. For those struggling to drink enough fluids, I highly recommend trying flavored teas/coffee/cocoa (I also find that warm beverages are great for filling me up between meals). They're also good in yogurt and protein oatmeal. I imagine they would enhance smoothies as well. There are SO MANY awesome flavors available that it was hard for me to narrow it down to "only" 13, but I decided to buy the minimum to get free shipping and save the rest for my next order.
  21. You should be fine. Everybody's post-op diet progression goes a little differently, and different surgeons give different directions. A lot of people have a pureed food stage between full liquids and soft foods. For me, the first week was liquids and the second week was purees. I was allowed to start soft foods in week 3, but I actually stuck with purees for a few extra weeks just to be safe. Your stomach may not be ready for soft foods yet, so there's nothing wrong with going back to liquids or purees for a few days (this is what my surgeon recommended if I had any problems during my progression). I've seen a lot of people here say they had trouble tolerating eggs for a while after surgery, so the problem could just be the egg, and you might do ok with other soft foods. The grilled chicken strip also might not be the best choice because it's too dense and dry. Chicken goes down best when it's shredded and very moist. I would suggest starting with canned chicken and adding some kind of sauce (e.g., Greek yogurt, enchilada sauce, or gravy). One of my favorite soft food meals was refried beans + protein powder with canned chicken + enchilada sauce. Take VERY small bites and chew really well. For the first few months, I often had problems when I ate meat where it felt like it got stuck on the way down. It was very unpleasant and sometimes came with some nausea. This is pretty common, and if it happens, you just need to stop eating and wait for it to work its way down. Resist the urge to try to wash it down with water because that can just make it worse. Walking around a bit can help. Finally, a lot of people find it challenging to meet fluid goals when they go from liquids to purees/soft foods. Most people are told not to drink anything for 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after the meal (the amount of time varies), and it might take 30 minutes to eat the meal, so every meal takes away an hour and a half of drinking fluids. You just have to be vigilant about sipping constantly in between. It gets a lot easier after the first several weeks, though!
  22. No, I don't think they ever mentioned a timeframe, just portion size, but I do take my time. If 2 TB is feeling like a lot (and it depends on what I'm eating - 2 TB of cottage cheese takes much longer and fills me up way more than 2 TB of cream soup or yogurt), I'll slow down in between bites, but I don't think I've ever still been sitting there after a half-hour and thinking I need more. I do have hunger (I think?) but it feels way different now. It's like a rolling cramp almost. And the weirdest part is that it's no longer connected to my brain, if that makes any sense (and I hope it stays that way!!!).

    Need advice

This is what my surgeon gave me...your mileage may vary! Protein shakes, Milk 1% or less (I recommend Fair Life), Greek Yogurt in addition to the clear liquids (Bariatric Clear Liquids, Broth, De-caf Coffee or Tea, Diet Jello). I highly recommend looking into the Bariatric Hot Cocoa from this site or Amazon. I also recommend Swanson Sipping Bone Broth at this stage. Good luck! Post Op Diet & Boot Camp.pdf
