  1. Okay so you need the following: 1. Whole black mustard seeds 2. Whole cumin 3. whole coriander 4. Cinnamon sticks 5. Whole Green Cardamom pods 6. Cayenne pepper 7. Turmeric 8. Bay leaves 9. Whole black pepper 10. Nutmeg That sounds like a lot I know, but it will set you up for success. They are so much cheaper in an indian grocery store than our typical little jars we buy at the grocery, it's worth a trip. Alternatively, whole foods, sprouts, central market, etc. all sell them loose in containers and you scoop out what you need by weight. Get yourself a fancy container like this if you want to keep them in one location: http://www.amazon.com/Matbah-Stainless-Steel-Masala-Container/dp/B009CSZA1U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1378682426&sr=8-2&keywords=indian+masala+dabba And get a cheap coffee grinder like this: http://www.amazon.com/KRUPS-203-42-Electric-Grinder-Stainless/dp/B00004SPEU/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1378682491&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=coffee+grindr The differences in flavor come from either a) grinding the seeds, dry-roasting the seeds before grinding, or c) roasting in a bit of oil before grinding. Each of these tastes completely different. If you have this, you should be able to make the garam masala recipe I've posted, as well as the chicken curry. I will post some daal recipes one of these days and they will use the same spices, as would all the veggies I make. Enjoy!

    Introducing myself

Hi Everybody!! I'm new to forums in general so it's going to take me a while to learn all the in and outs. About me: Colombian, 35 y/o, lived in Ft lauderdale FL for 9 years, married, two girls (3 y/o and 10 months). I've been researching about the sleeve for a few months now and want to thank all of you sleevers that have shared your experiences and thoughts. WLS is a difficult desicion to make. So...........I am down to two options : Dr. Almanza in Tijuana and Dr. Cure in Barraquilla (Colombia). I am tired of just thinking about it so i hope i can make a desicion in the next two weeks. Back to work now.........MC
  3. I called called 10/25 or 10/26 and spoke with someone at Clark County Hospital regarding Lap Band surgery and paying for it with Care Credit. They have not called me back as of Oct 30/07. I called Caritas/St Mary's and Elizabeth Hospital and left a message today, 10/30/07 for them to call me back. Will be waiting for a call back. :help: Weight Loss Tickers
  4. I had a fill yesterday. I haven't had a fill in about 10 months. I am on liquids for 2 days and gradually start on solids Friday. I can't remember, I can seem to get fluids down ok, just a little slower. Is this due to swelling? Also I am having some hiccups! FUN!

    Problem or not?

Hey, everybody! I am 5 weeks post-op, and have had absolutely no problems since surgery, aside from doing so well, that I felt like I never had surgery! With that good comes the bad, though. I have had no restriction it seems, whatsoever. I won't bore you with that part any longer:notagree , but only mentioned it, as it might pertain to my first ever issue: Yesterday morning, I was enjoying mostly just the inside of a ham/egg/cheese Lean Pocket for breakfast. I did eat a little of the crust, but not much. About 20 minutes or so after eating. I began to feel queasy, broke out into a sweat and felt a little pressure. Then, it went away. Then, it came back. This went on all day. I never did vomit because it just never reeached that point. Then, later on yesterday, I began to feel very gassy. Tons of belly gas, intestinal gas, pretty noisy, too! Never any pain, though. I was able to get fluids down just fine, to stay hydrated, but I didn't dare eat anything else all day, for fear of doing any further damage. Last evening, I felt better, and a bit hungry. I ate 3 or 4 saltines, and had no problem. I continued to feel queasy, gassy, and some pressure (just a little) in my belly - but alway got relief as I heard the air move, and belched. I went to bed last night. I felt perfectly normal when I laid down. I slept fine all night. No problems. i woke up this morning feeling better. My cup and a half of half-caff went down just fine. I then ate most of a scrambled egg, and was fine until about 10 minutes after I ate it. Then, the same thing as yesterday. As I type this, I can feel gas pressure building, the noises in my belly and intestine, the pressure, etc. No pain, though. I am keeping on the fluids. I had two cups of decaf herbal tea - no problems. I am concerned if I have a blockage or slippage. Maybe I'm just paranoid, though!:violin: Then again, maybe this is just restriction after 5 weeks??? Can that happen? Any advice, or similar experiences out there would be helpful. Thanks!

    Liquid Diet

My surgeon wants me to lose 10-12 lbs. during my 2 wk liquid diet. I'm following it very strictly. My work colleague was around 300 lbs starting weight and lost 18 lbs on the liquid diet. I'm sure there are many factors that affect it. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  8. I had port reattachment surgery this past Friday. It was local anesthetic and my doc put in another cc while he was at it, bringing me to a total of 5.5 cc in a 10 cc band. Post-op hunger question

I had the Lap Band surgery on March 10, being hungry post op is an issue but not one you cant overcome, some of it is the idea you cant have certain foods, stay strong and you will make it through it. The post op gas pain can be an issue, but get up and WALK, WALK, WALK as much as possible it helps to move the gas out. Good luck.

    New Here

Hi, I am a newbie here. I finally agreed with my endocronologist to have a lapband. He had been suggesting gastric bypass for a couple of years, but I was afraid. I have been dieting and exercising since I was 13yrs old, with varying degrees of success. I am 54 yrs old, female, BMI 49.9 with co-morbidities, diabetes, hypertension, GERD and hip/knee joint pain. I am an ICU RN working 12 hr shifts, feeling exhausted. I was told with my HgA1C 9.9 and BMI that I have approximately 10 yrs to live. I am scheduled for the seminar 7/17 in Pittsburgh, Pa with Dr Joseph Colleti. I have a million questions. How long will I be off work or restricted with lifting? How long will it take to get the ball rolling? TIA for sharing information. SweetSmile

    Port Pain

So im 10 days post op and had been feeling decent. Today i was getting up off the couch and felt excruciating pain at port site and it felt like it popped or something. Now im really sore. What could have happened? Did my port flip or detatch? Please pray neither of those happened.
  14. I finally got a seminar in today. This is my 3rd try. Each time I went before they had changed the date and I did not know until I got there. My insurance requires that I do 6 months of WW(ect) while under the monthly care of my regular Dr. for weigh loss also. I started that about a week ago. So it will be awhile before I can have surgery. I also have to lose 10% of my body weight while on WW. I have tried many times to lose, even WW(weight watchers) but could only lose about 20 pounds then it would not move down anymore for nothing(weeks on end). So I know that this site is more for the lap band but what about the sleeve, anyone? The dr at the seminar says that he won't tell anyone which sugery to have but he made it seem like the sleeve was the better choice...he says is has less risk than the lap band and that he does about 35% lap band and 65% sleeve. He said that weigh loss was better with the sleeve. ......I am tore now as to which I might want to have done.
  15. I am a bariatric physician practicing in Sacramento who has been trained to do band fills. My charge is around $400 for an initial consult and fill, and we are getting some insurance coverage. Follow-up fills are $110. In my opinion, having a lower priced option will encourage band patients to use their band as it was designed. I see many patients who had only one or two fills, then stopped because of the expense. Here is the page on my BestBand program: http://www.keepitoff.com/our-programs/best-bariatrics-weight-loss/best-band-postoperative-weight-loss-program/ Also, I want to invite you (and any other band patient) to a monthly band only support group. It is held at Sutter General Hospital the third Saturday of the month from 10:30-12:30. The Day I stopped Feeding the Beast

Between January 2005 and January 2006 I lost 53 Kilos doing the Atkins diet. I've since regained 35 of them. So many diets and soooo many failures. I've made two feeble attempts since then losing and gaining 10 kilos each time. In March this year I decided to go ahead with the band. Good thing was my insurer agreed to pay half. I have to say though that's the cheap part, the surgery to remove all of my excess skin at the end of this is what'll bankrupt me. I started my pre-op diet on May 29th and lost 8 kilos in the two weeks leading up to the surgery. I must take some 'before' photos before I lose too much weight.

    Second Step

Tracy, I read that you are attending the seminar this Saturday. Are you attending Dr. Malley's seminar at the Holiday Inn Mission? If so, I will also be attending the 10:00 seminar. I've been reading these boards for a few months now and have written down the names of some local members so if I ever decide to do this, I can contact this group of people to get more detailed info on how they are doing since surgery. Maybe I'll see you there. Sharon
  20. Ok, so I said I would put more up about this last night, but with the kids, getting ready for bed....I just didn't have time. The article is called "The Easier Way to Diet" by Martha Beck She talks about a five-step plan to help master your "beastie brain" and "relax the weight off." She makes four key points about our brains and how there are several layers to our brains. Basically, the "wanting to be thin" (cyberbrain) part of the brain is always at war with the "feed me now" brain (beastie). This also relates to the nervous system that goes back and forth between "fight or flight" and "rest and relaxation." Obviously, when the cyberbrain is in control you naturally restrict your intake. Repeated dieting and constant negative thoughts theoretically rev up your fight or flight/beastie brain. She has come up with five steps to combat the issue and calls it SO FAR: S - Stop - feeling anxious, hating yourself, just ate a ton? Stop and shout "Nature break!" O - Open - once you are by yourself work to get back to that "rest and relaxation" part of your brain by Opening up. Relax your body by opening your lungs, your eyes and stretch your muscles. F - Forgive - She says this is the most important step. You must forgive yourself and your body. Make a list of things that you've done right, don't just focus on having eaten those 10 Cookies (yeah, I used to be able to do that! No MORE though!). She says that eventually, you will reach self-forgiveness and the "calm observer" part of the brain will become more active. A - Accept - Once you can forgive yourself, it's time to allow things to happen as they do. (sounds sort of like the AA mantra - "accept the things I cannot control") R - Renew - From that place of "stillness, openness, forgiveness and acceptance, you can Renew your commitment to any eating plan you like." Is it over simplified? Sure. But I like the idea of forgiving myself for being overweight, for choosing poorly that day, past days and past years. I want to accept myself now and enjoy my new body as it begins to change through this process. Good luck to all of us! I look forward to our weigh ins on Friday. We have SO FAR to go in our journey, but at the same time, we really have come SO FAR...Thanks for reading...
  21. Hi everyone! I am just starting my surgery journey and need all the help I can get. I've gained and lost the 160 lb monster that's attached to me so many times it's insane. However, now with the threat of needing new hips it's just time for "her" to die. I have certain health problems but managed to dodge diabetes and cholesterol issues. I have high BP, now the hip thing, and sleep apnea. I am fairly active still for 330lbs doing hair about 50 hrs a week. I've been as high as 400lbz and as low as 189 in the past 10 years. I'm at the end of my rope. I need advice on how to get insurance to help pay. I have. BCBS of Louisiana. Has anyone here hD success with them? Any help is sincerely appreciated.
  22. Brian, thanks for the offer but I must confess that I actually like many of the products. But you don't need to be out $300. If you ordered within the last 30 days you can get a full refund on up to 10 boxes as long as not more than one packet has been used in the box. If it's more than 30 days, sell it all on ebay! I did that once. You usually get back at least half your money selling it on ebay.

    Confused & a Little Scared

Hi, I had to take out a loan and put some of the cost on to my credit card. Do I feel it is worth it? Absolutely! I was just banded two weeks ago, but I have been overweight my entire life. I am now 43 y.o., female, and happen to have a low-end BMI of 36. My pre-op weight was 225. I've lost 10 lbs. since the surgery two weeks ago. I am looking forward to long-term benefits of being at a lower body weight, such as a decreased risk for diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. I look at the surgery as a way to increase my overall health and well-being.30+ years of dieting sure didn't work for me! Can you really put a price on that?
  24. Hi there - glad you are asking these questions! I would recommend that you stay with full liquids/mushie foods for another couple of days. When you start to add solids again, GO SLOWLY. At the very first sign of any distress, stop eating and consciously try to relax. I'd say if you continue to have this issue after 10 days, consider going in for a slight unfill. If it gets WORSE it could mean you've irritated your stoma with trying to get solids in too fast. If at any time you are having trouble getting liquids down, call your doctor. I am amazed at how many people will go days without being able to get liquids down and become dangerously dehydrated. DO NOT let that happen! Good luck!

How are people doing 1+ years postop?

I am 19 months post-op and almost at goal. Most of my remaining weight is extra skin. I too am at a crawl with my weightloss. I have been sick (horrible flu) and not working out like I should. ~Mandy
