  1. Hi everyone, I had my surgery on 3/3, and the first few days were quite rough for me, but every day has been much better. Isopure tasted awful for me the first day, and I mixed some gatorade g2, and it totally fixed the tast. As of Monday I started full liquids. I am a vegetarian, so I don't eat chick broth. What I have been taking is non-fat greek yogurt, and milk add some salt, and make a smoothie (similar to indian drink called lassi), I have enjoyed these preoperatively, and still enjoy them now. I also started making tomato Soup, and lentil soup. I am able to tolerate a decent amount of these item, and enjoy them so much I actually want more. I keep on hearing that you get full very fast, and you lose appetite. I'm not very full fast, and I want more. I also have to work on taking these fluids at a much slower pace. I"m afraid that fact i'm enjoying these fluids along with taking down the fluids pretty fast, I may be stretching my pouch? How much fluid's do you take in how much time?

    Post-op food nightmares..

Interesting foods to dream cheat with! You may want to try my dream hot fudge sundae instead. Lol no kidding, your food dream sounds much more exciting!!! But it was really interesting to me because I am a vegetarian so I don't eat fish but I keep saying I am going to add it back into my diet.

    Gluten free protein

I have celiac disease, along with a handful of other auto-immune disorders. As I am sure you know, lean meat, yogurt and cottage cheese are gluten free, as are many vegetarian options. I used Slim-fast and WonderSlim shakes/drinks for Protein. Quest products are also gluten free and delicious. You'll have no problems! Best, Amy

    Vegetarian Chili

The thought of spring and all the yummy veggies and produce that will soon be reaching us has me so happy. There is nothing better then produce markets. No more grocery store until fall. So here is a recipe for vegan chili. A little twist without meat but who needs meat when you have so much Protein in one bowl. The vegan crumbles you can get in any grocery store in the frozen section. Made from soy but you will never know it is not hamburger. 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/2 medium onion, chopped 2 bay leaves 1 teaspoon ground cumin 2 tablespoons dried oregano 1 tablespoon salt 2 stalks celery, chopped 2 green bell peppers, chopped 2 jalapeno peppers, chopped 3 cloves garlic, chopped 2 (4 ounce) cans chopped green Chile peppers, drained 2 (12 ounce) packages vegetarian burger crumbles 3 (28 ounce) cans whole peeled tomatoes, crushed 1/4 cup chili powder 1 tablespoon ground black pepper 1 (15 ounce) can kidney Beans, drained 1 (15 ounce) can garbanzo beans, drained 1 (15 ounce) can black beans 1 (15 ounce) can whole kernel corn Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Stir in the onion, and season with bay leaves, cumin, oregano, and salt. Cook and stir until onion is tender, then mix in the celery, green bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, garlic, and green chile peppers. When vegetables are heated through, mix in the vegetarian burger crumbles. Reduce heat to low, cover pot, and simmer 5 minutes. Mix the tomatoes into the pot. Season chili with chili powder and pepper. Stir in the kidney beans, garbanzo beans, and black beans. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, and simmer 45 minutes. Stir in the corn, and continue cooking 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy! I am thinking of making a vegan cook book. I have a lot of recipes and I love to cook vegan meals.

told I can't be on a vegetarian diet.

I was raised a vegetarian and am quickly going back to that lifestyle. I much prefer the taste and have found my food to have more protein, less fat and calories than meat. Here is my nutritional breakdown from MFP for today. Not one bite of meat.

Any vegetarian groups that had the bypass... Not the sleeve? Sorry I'm on a mobile device and it is a pain lol.
  7. I'm still pre-op, but I'm wondering about how I'll get enough protein when the time comes. I do eat some dairy now, but I always take lactase pills. Will this be possible post-op? I'm also concerned about eating too much soy...

Totally interested, I'm a vegetarian and my surgery is on the 24th!

told I can't be on a vegetarian diet.

I'm currently pre-op and I've been having such a hard time on here finding info about post-op veggie diets! Why is there no special interest group for vegetarians and vegans? I mean, they have them for all sorts of things. Is there a way to start one? Is that something people would be interested in?
  11. i love this post on a friends blog. bear in mind, she was never morbidly obese, but did go from eating a sugar heavy, low fat, high carb, vegetarian diet to a mostly paleo, no processed foods diet over the course of seven years. she has been searching for "the answer." and was surprised at what she discovered. http://mamasweeds.com/2014/02/23/the-pendulum-and-why-i-broke-up-with-low-carb/
  12. Kim, Thanks for the reply! The vegetarian chili sounds great!! I can have meat just not red meat. I'm really weird about bleeding up my food so I have been doing everything I can to not have to do that. I need to try cottage cheese!! I just have such a big mental block on mushy foods (I don't like them because of the look and texture) that this has all been really hard.
  13. Fab, how about cottage cheese, yogurt and pureed vegetarian (I can't have meat yet) chili. Other more filling or substantial soups? Some on here also do mashed potatoes. Also hummus is good. Good luck, hope this helps a bit!

    Is Vegan life so awful

I've become mostly a vegetarian- not really by choice it just kind of turned out that way after I had surgery. I'm not a vegan, but I can completely understand that way of life. I do occasionally eat meat, but it's very rare that I do. I used to eat red meat a lot before surgery - I was so unhealthy! I'm going to try your receipt! I love it when people share their receipts because I can't think of new things sometimes

    Is Vegan life so awful

I've thought about going vegetarian, too. meat seems like such a pain (ha!) to deal with in the quantities I can eat. One small point...vegan is the absence of all animal products, including milk, cheese, eggs...I don't think I would go that far with it. Would love to have your recipes!

    Post Op Stall

Thank you!! What is the 5:2? I will have to try the different diet. My trainer has switched it up. We do cross fit 2x a week and then strength 1x a week. Ill try the low carb and maybe more the vegetarian route too. I will keep you posted!!

    Post Op Stall

Don't you hate those last few pounds? My understanding is that shaking it up can often yield results, sort of confusing your body and hitting a reset button. Some ideas to try: Try 5:2 for a few weeks and see if the scale budges Try eating a completely different meal plan, for example, if you eat mostly meats, try vegetarian or vegan for two weeks Try 2 weeks of very, very low carbs, like 20g a day max Talk to your trainer about incorporating some HIIT or interval training into your routine The other thing that could be going on is your training. I started strength training in January. I've lost very little poundage in the last two months but have gone from size 14 to 10. I've gained muscle that has offset my fat loss, so I'm not seeing it on the scale. Have you measured.yourself? Best of luck, let us know your progress.
  18. I think low carb is interesting, as well. I have tried to go very low carb (from 60 g a day to 20-40 g a day), but since I eat a lot of vegetarian Protein and dairy, I just couldn't get that low. I don't eat bread or Pasta or rice, etc. but Beans, nuts and dairy have carbs (also lots of fiber). That's just me, though. Still, 60g a day of carbs is not bad. I think there is a lot of really interesting new research on relatively high fat diets, too, like half your calories from fats, while keeping carbs low. Again, been trying to go that route, but even though I don't watch my fats at all, I rarely eat more than 35 g of fat a day. Higher fats increase satiety and healthy fats are not bad for your heart or cholesterol, and can even improve it. At this point, I would say I am relatively Low Carb. Low Carb is a very sustainable way to eat, pretty easy to do, and one I plan to keep up with after my weight loss phase. I spent a lot of years addicted to carbs (bread especially) and I just don't want to go back to that.
  19. I had the gastric sleeve surgery approx two years. My start weight was 324 pds and I had orginally got down to 190 pds. Since June of last year I have put on approx 12 pds. I would like to hear from some veterans that are a year or two out and have put on weight. I need some advice that will help me get back on track. My downfall is grazing and eating a lot of sugar. I am also a vegetarian so I am falling short of hitting my Protein levels. I don't want to regain all that weight. Any helpful advice would be great.

    Post-Op January 2014 Losers Club!

Wow! That's SO amazing to be able to eat solids. I try but can only get about an ounce. Chicken is good very little so I stay with soft foods still. I'm 6 weeks gastro bypass and puréed/soft are my friend. I've been mostly on a vegetarian diet but what I wish I could have more is.... H2O. I was excited I could drink 12oz within an hour! I burp and air gets caught if I drink anymore than 3 sips at a time. (Believe me I've tried and I have my watched alarm set) Congrats on those who can eat. Cheers!

    Non-Dairy protein suggestions

Since surgery, I like plain old split pea Soup. I sometimes add a little black pepper and/or liquid smoke for more flavor. Have you tried the vegetarian meat substitute? It's really processed soybeans that are dried and flavored like beef or chicken. When you add hot Water and a lot of imagination it almost tastes like ground beef. It likes to take on the flavor of whatever it's cooked with. It's sometimes called textured vegetable Protein, or TVP. You'll have to watch the salt content, if that's a problem. I've found it branded by Augason Farms at our local Wal-mart stores in their food storage or large food quantity/container aisle.

How was your 5:2 day today?

It may be my "tone", I don't know for sure I get more people doing that than some other people here... but do get a few, thats for sure. The "badge" may lead some of them to me. I get more questions about the 5:2 and vegetarianism than anything else... My professional Title/job description at my day job is "Direct service provider/program advisor" So I have set myself up as a go to person. Is that a part of being a host here? Advice from experience, keeping the boards straight, reporting glitches, making suggestions(about the site), removing bullies and welcoming the unwelcome... that is the host job description.
  24. I do between 40 and 60 g of carbs a day. I think I lose better with fewer carbs, but I eat a lot of vegetarian Protein sources, Beans and seeds, dairy, etc. and so my carbs creep up even though I eat no bread, Pasta, rice, etc...I get plenty of Fiber and food based Vitamins, though, which for me is important. At the beginning of my program my nut told us no more than 60 g of carbs daily and no more than 20 g per meal. Lots of people do fewer carbs than that, some do more. It worked for me, but now I do try for a lower carb number and higher fat number. Still doing 70 g protein a day.

    Any vegetarian breakfast ideas?

I'm also ovo-lacto vegetarian. Some of my frequent breakfasts are Greek yogurt, hemp hearts w/ nut butter, morningstar veg sausage patties, spinach and cheese stuffed baked tomato, portobello with goat cheese and kale or mozz and tomato, flax & millet Lavash toast with olives and cream cheese. Lately I've been making high protein muffins that are amazing (25 grams protein, less than 10 carbs, 423 calories) PM for recipe.
