    Weight loss slower than anticipated

Yes after revision surgery weight loss is slower than with your original surgery, Also remember you are starting at a lower weight this time so your loss will be a little slower from that perspective too. However, there’s nothing slow with your rate of loss. Three to 4 pounds a week is nothing to be concerned about. Enjoy every pound you lose.

    Any April Surgery Dates?

April 26th and scared. Doing bypass and just making sure I'm doing the right thing. Cleveland clinic is a great hospital so just hope it's all ok.
  3. I have my gastric bypass scheduled for June 13! Getting excited!

    Weight loss slower than anticipated

    Revision patients usually lose slower.
  5. A little backstory: I had a sleeve back in 2015. I went from 450 to 190. I kept it off for 5 years. Enter pandemic, job loss, and alcohol abuse. I gained 130 of the 240 back. My little sleeved stomach also grew and I was eating full size meals again and I developed severe GERD and a hiatal hernia. My esophagus was constantly sitting in acid and was scarring and narrowing and the hernia was so bad, food and pills were constantly getting stuck. Fast forward to the present, I had a revision to a gastric bypass to fix the GERD and hernia. Those things have been 100% resolved (thank goodness), but the weight hasn’t been flying off like it did with my sleeve. I lost 40 pounds my first month with the sleeve. An average of 1-2 pounds per day. Right now, with the bypass I’ve slowed down after exiting the liquid diet stage to where I’m losing .3-.5 pounds per day and loosing about 3-4 per week. I know I should be happy that I’m losing, but I’m disappointed that it’s not flying off like before. Especially because my activity level and calories burned is much higher than it was with my sleeve at this stage. I’ve gone in circles trying to wrap my head around it. I know I’m 8 years older (36 now) and I have developed chronic insomnia over the last year, so I only get 3-5 hours per night. I’m absorbing less, so maybe I’m in starvation mode? I’m at a loss Anyone have any encouragement or experience with this?
  6. My revision surgery was April 19, 2023 and I also have BCBS. my original sleeve date was 11/2016 and I lost 100 lbs the first year and half. My lowest weight was 135 and I’ve maintained that for the last five years. Around my second year post sleeve I developed acid reflux and heartburn daily. When I would eat, shortly after I’d need to either throw up the acid trying to come up or I’d have to sit and tolerate the acid burning until it subsided. Daily omeprazole and tums did very little to counteract the symptoms. If I ate, it was happening. 2020 I had another EGD performed that showed Barrett’s esophagus had begun to form in my esophagus and there was a hernia. The surgeon wanted to move forward with a bypass revision but because I didn’t want to lose any weight or have another major surgery I asked for other medications to try before we went straight to surgery. 2023 in March I had another EGD performed that showed three ulcers, the hernia and worsening Barrett’s. Nothing had worked so far and my quality of life just wasn’t good. Considering I love to cook and eat, I knew I couldn’t just live with this much longer. I agreed to do the surgery. The doctor sent over an EGD result, CT scan and upper GI to BCBS who approved the revision surgery. (My plan has Bariatric benefits) if your plan doesn’t have Bariatric benefits I would check with your insurance coordinator to see if there is another option. I am now three days post revision- no heartburn or acid reflux at all. Painful, but on the mend.
  7. Hello everyone I had my gastric bypass on 22nd February 2023 and although I am super thankful that I have lost weight, I am constantly worried I will not lose enough. One of the reasons I opted for the bypass (although there are other reasons) is because I do not have any children and I have unfortunately been diagnosed with premature ovarian failure and told that the only way I will possibly conceive is IVF, but I cannot get IVF on the NHS unless my weight is below 30 BMI. Some clinics do offer slightly higher BMIs (around 35) but they are all private and unfortunately I cannot afford to pay privately. For reference I am 5ft 5inches. I feel my weight loss has been quite slow for my starting weight and I read elsewhere that you usually lose 50% of your weight within the first 3 months, which has me worried as I think I am unlikely to hit 50% by 22nd May. I would be really grateful for anyone’s comments/experiences and have pasted below my weigh ins. 8. Not sure what effect the Heller Myotomy procedure would have, but I'm almost 5 months post gastric bypass and smoke a couple nice cigars a week. My surgeon told me it would not be a problem. At my age, the very slight long-term effect is inconsequential compared to the enjoyment of my simple pleasures. It's like anything else, weigh the options and decide.

    Planning on getting the sleeve

I got the bypass rather than the sleeve, but my answer would be the same regardless. The first few weeks post-surgery can be rough and some people initially do have regrets, but once they get through that, almost no one has regrets other than they wish they'd have done it sooner. Having this surgery changed (and probably saved) my life. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Best decision I've ever made!

    loose skin after gastric sleeve

I'm a male who was 59 when I had gastric bypass--and yes, loose skin is an issue. I have it on most parts of my body to varying degrees, but it was most noticeable on my stomach and neck. I was obese for decades and skin just hasn't snapped back. I look older than I did prior to surgery due to sagging skin on my face (jowls and neck), and the only plastic surgery I've considered is a lower face lift and neck lift because they are always visible. (I still might do it.). I can live with the loose skin everywhere else--but I'm now almost 64 and am way past caring about what other people think of my body. Yes, it's a bit embarrassing to appear on the beach in a swimsuit, but I've managed to find a high bathing suit that covers the worst bits. In spite of all the above, I have zero regrets. I'll take a saggy body that is healthy and energetic over my old fat body any day!
  11. New to the group, had my Bypass on the 7th, I’ve lost 17lbs since.
  12. Hey all, I am pre-op for a Gastric Bypass with Heller Myotomy due to Stage 3 Achalasia. I have read some posts about cigar smoking after surgery, but haven't seen many with what procedure I am going to have. That being said, I am not a frequent smoker and I do not smoke cigarettes. I do enjoy an occasional cigar, however my surgeon has stated that there is no way that I can smoke after my surgery. This kind of sucks if I will really have that many complications because of some traditions we have within my workplace as a Paramedic and Firefighter. My question is, has anyone had this procedure and if so, have you had any complications with smoking a cigar post-op. Thanks all.

    Any April Surgery Dates?

Hi, friend. I had bypass on the 11th and I'm definitely still struggling with some fatigue and light-headedness, although starting on soft foods has definitely helped. Are you meeting your protein goals? I don't think I would be close to mine without my one protein shake that I throw in some decaf iced coffee in the morning. Did they have you stop your Trulicity after surgery? That would definitely account for your numbers going up. I stalled weight loss wise for a few days too and then saw a big drop yesterday. I hope sincerely that your lightheadedness goes away and your energy comes back very soon. ❤️ Edit: "I stalled" not "installed"

    Any April Surgery Dates?

Worried I am doing something wrong and looking for some insights. Had gastric bypass on 4/12 and over all feeling better each day. I am noticing my morning fasting blood glucose levels starting to climb. Was in the 90s in the hospital and now this morning at 124. Pre op was on trulicity 1.5 1x a week for type 2 diabetes. I still get very tired easy and am lightheaded most of the day. Have had some vision changes since surgery as well. Starting weight 231 - 4/20 today 224 which has not changed for 3 days post op weight 239 went up day after surgery and is now at 224 Started foods on Sunday with dr recommended : 3oz protein and half cup veggie2x a day or fruit 1x a day - every meal is measured and strict to guidelines. My surgeon does not allow any protein shakes or any processed food of any kind. drinking minimum 64oz water up to walking 1.5-2 miles per day

    Hurry Up and Wait!

My time from initial consult to surgery was ~9 months. My insurance required 2 psych visits, and 6 dietician visits spaced a month apart. Once I got through all of that the surgery team sent it to my insurance and the insurance approved it in one day! I personally went with the RNY as I've had GERD since my teens. He said the sleeve would not help that and could likely worsen it, so I chose the RNY. He also said the number of revisions from the Sleeve to RNY was quite high (I've read so many posts from people having the revision on here and the other support group I belong to). I did not want to risk 2 surgeries. I've been taking supplements for years and years, so I felt it wouldn't be an issue for me to not remember to take them. Good luck to you!!!

    DS possible after gastric sleeve?

Yes, absolutely possible, as Catwoman suggests; indeed, many talk in terms of this as being a "completion" of the DS rather than a "revision". I don't know specifically of anyone in those states who does it - DS surgeons are still fairly few and far between, at least ones who do the "traditional" or Hess DS. The simpler SADI "loop DS" has more who do it, but that's really a distinct procedure that should be considered on its own merits. In earlier years, Dr. Rabkin in SF (who did my VSG and my wife's DS) had an active support group in the Seattle area as he had a fairly large contingent of patients there, though they have dissipated in activity, as we tend to do over time. For a DS, one should usually count on having to travel for them, even if one is in a major metropolitan area. Fortunately most DS surgeons are very used to travelling patients and are equipped to do remote consults before and after surgery, so it's mostly a trip of a couple weeks time for the surgery and everything else can be done remotely.

    DS possible after gastric sleeve?

yes! Gastric sleeve for years was phase 1 of the DS, back in the days when a lot of surgeons did the DS in two stages - first, they created a sleeved stomach, and then, several months later, they'd go back in and bypass most of the small intestine. However, enough people lost enough weight on stage 1 alone that they started offering it as a standalone surgery - and the VSG was born! long way of saying - of couse you can, since the sleeve is the first stage of the DS.
  18. Actually, I have 2 questions: 1) I had a gastric sleeve almost 5 years ago; after losing 60 lbs., my pannus changed size & shape, becoming EXTREMELY uncomfortable. I stopped losing weight, gained back 20 lbs., and fortunately maintained my net 40 lbs. weight loss. Does anyone know if I can has DS after a gastric sleeve? 2) I originally wanted DS but the bariatric surgeons in my area did bypass or sleeve only. I live in eastern Washington State; does anyone know of surgeons anywhere around my area (WA state, Idaho, Montana, or Oregon) that perform DS?

    Getting gastric sleeve tomorrow

I had Lap-Band 20 years ago. I then had the removal of my Lap-Band and revision to Gastric Bypass in March 2018 and Gastric Bypass reversal due to a lower bowel blockage in June 2019. I regret getting the Lap-Band and using a surgeon for my Bypass that wasn't the greatest (to be kind.) Thankfully, I've kept almost all my extra weight off, and my health is great.

    Getting gastric sleeve tomorrow

Hi Alex, I see that you received a gastric bypass 20 years ago. Did you have to do any other gastric surgeries in the past 20 years? How is your health and do you have any regrets? Thank you so much!

    Hurry Up and Wait!

So you got options. But let me start with this advice, that will help you stay sane. Do not judge others journeys against your own. You will go crazy. I finally had surgery after three attempts, I will lay out each timeline. First surgeon, Meeting in november, decided to start program in january bc I would meet my deductible and my insurance requirements, I could be done in about 8 weeks, because all I needed was one dietician appt and a physch eval. My insurance added it as a blacklisted item when the year changed over so I didn't get it. This doctor also was heavy on sleeve, and said that bypass wasn't important and he felt was overdone. Second. Was going to go to mexico. I filled out the only paper, and had a call with a coordinator in 48 hrs with approval. LIterally could have scheduled 2 weeks out, If I had the money in hand. I would have had a 14 day clear diet with them or else they could have gotten me in sooner, lol. Custody battle took my surgery money, so, cancelled. Third time the charm My surgeon was heavy bypass. And I am glad bc in my EGD they were able to see I had silent reflux and lots of ulcers. So I needed bypass regardless. I had my first appt May 2nd, and was given a list of requirements that my surgeon had, and another sheet with my insurance requirements. My Ins reqd a phych eval, a dietician clearance, and a recommendation letter. My surgeons office requires phych eval, 4 dietician classes to be completed 1x a week while on preop diet, 1 dietician meeting a month prior to start preop, EGD, and if needed based on medical records cardio and EKG. I left the appt on May 2nd with my EGD appoint, that was 6 ish weeks out, mid June. I didn't understand that I was supposed to make the phych appt, so that was kinda stalled, but they sent everything to insurance for approval in mid august. I started the 1 month preop labor day weekend and had surgery Oct 3rd. But insurance companies can require things that will make it longer, esp if they require a supervising diet.

    Hurry Up and Wait!

Hopefully you can get the approval to start research asap! That's so exciting. Yeah, my coworkers are both 65+, and sisters. It's actually my really good friends mom and aunt, so you would think that would be cool. But NO! It's awful mean girl mentality with them. To the point that they ran off a MALE coworker a few months ago. So yeah, it is bad. So no one personally knows, other than my husband and a lifelong friend who had bypass about a year and a half ago. I have a pretty sedentary job, so hopefully can come back as quickly as I did with my thryoidectomy and gallbladder, so that they won't have a clue, lol. And my insurance didn't have a whole lot of requirements. I had to do bloodwork and primary clearance, psych eval, their required nutrition class, and then the nutrition class with my dr office they require. So not much at all, for which I am grateful.
  23. I am wondering how long it took everyone from the time you initially talked to your doctor about wanting to get the surgery to how long you had to wait. I started this journey at the beginning of the year. My first conversation with the surgeon was on January 5th. I did not like her, as she was pretentious and rude. She kept saying, "Someone of your size" cannot get the gastric bypass, so I debated just not doing any of the procedures. I tried to explain to her (as we were doing this as a telehealth visit) that she was misjudging my size by only looking at the numbers. I hold my weight way too well. In high school, I outweighed girls my height and clothing size by 60-80 pounds, but was a state-placing cross country runner. My actual body fat composition was low when tested, versus weight/height ratio. Came to find out that she doesn't like doing bypasses, so she tried to convince all her patients to do the sleeve. After reading up on both, I decided I would actually prefer the sleeve, but not for any of the reasons she gave. I have had three visits with my primary, done the blood tests, and am now waiting on the surgeon's office for my psychology appointment and my final dietician appointment (which is over a month out.) Once I have those, along with an EKG from my primary and getting my paperwork signed off, I then have to wait for insurance to give the final approval. After that, I then wait. So what started on January 5th will take until a minimum of May 15th (final appointment) to even have everything completed... and then two to three weeks for insurance. Then, as my surgeon explained in January, it takes up to 6 weeks for the surgery to scheduled. I am a school teacher with my youngest heading off to college in August, so I am not going to miss taking her. I am majorly concerned that by the time I finally get the surgery, the summer will be over and I won't be able to get time off at the beginning of the school year for this surgery. I am debating talking to my doctor and telling her that I just won't have the surgery because this process is just taking way too long. I have already lost 22 pounds since I first weighed in at the beginning of the year from changing my diet. I am thinking I will be down another 20 by the time I finally get this surgery... or if I can get this surgery.
  24. I can't seem to shake the blues this morning. I had a vgb 27 years ago and a REY two weeks ago. I gained 20 pounds while in the hospital for my two day stay....and two weeks later I'm still up by 6 (and gained weight the last two days). My calorie intake is NOT causing this weight gain....and my head knows that this is surgery trauma trying to work itself out. But I'm now sitting here questioning everything. I lost 80 pounds prepping for this surgery. I wanted to stop vomiting......I wanted the assist of malabsorption.....but I'm queasy every time I put food in my mouth. I'm uncomfortable with the feeling of food in my pouch. I'm disappointed that my body won't play along. I can't drink enough. I can't stand the thought of having to have two protein shakes a day to get the required protein in. I'm just really wondering why I put myself through all of this again just to feel as miserable as I do in this moment?
  25. Had my gastric bypass and hernia repair surgery 3/29. I'm going through the exact same thing. I fear I over worked myself around the house and walking too long. The worst pain is near my belly button (probably referred pain from left incision). It's miserable right now. I can't stand up for more than a minute. I hope you're doing better!
