Do you think your life would have been better or worse without WLS?
Rena's got this replied to LilMissDiva Irene's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
If I hadn't had the surgery, I would probably have gotten bigger and bigger. My pre-diabetes would probably have developed into full-blown diabetes within 3 years. My sleep apnea would have gotten worse. My liver would still be showing the elevated enzymes of fatty liver disease. My cholesterol would still be extremely high, and my blood pressure would be nearing stroke levels. I would probably need knee replacement surgery within a few years. Now that I've lost nearly 50 pounds, my A1C levels (diabetes) are 5.2 (normal). I rarely use my CPap machine for my sleep apnea. My blood pressure, cholesterol and liver enzymes are now normal. I went to Six Flags and fit in all the rides, and my knees didn't give out from all the walking. People seem to be nicer to me for some reason....more respectful. I no longer have to struggle to paint my toenails, tie my shoes, or (TMI alert) wipe my backside. I tried to pick up a 50 pound bag of dog food at the grocery store last week. I couldn't do it. Amazing, isn't it? -
hi! just had my RnY on the 20th. I'm walking a lot, taking a lot of fluids. Have been discharged today morning. Only problem i got is that this afternoon, I had my first significant bowel movement. It was all black in color. I had felt like pooping yesterday but it was mostly gas with a little bit of the black stuff(very little to be precise) I've been reading around on the internet about this, some people say that its common for 2-3 bowel movements, some say that its not and i should have it checked. and should i count the first little poop with mostly gas as a bowel movement? Sorry for TMI.

Get ready to rumble!
Lazy_Lizzy replied to ShelbyLynne710's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Also on another note I thank you for this a little TMI .I'm barely starting my journey and this is the stuff that will make it all that easier to know what to expect and not be worried when it happens. This is what this place was created for and I thank the creators deeply as I have gotten so much from here from insurance questions to what to expect before during and after. Thanks one again and that's for the reply as well. Much luck to you both!!! -
Hey guys! Sleeved June 19, surgery went well. In and out of the hospital in 2 days. 4 days PO and all I've been dealing with is the rumbling/gurgles of my stomach. Is this normal? It's typically all of the time, but especially after I drink something. I have definitely been struggling to get all the fluids in, but it has been getting better each day. My surgeon has me on Clear liquids 5 days PO and then on to full liquids. Can anyone suggest what they drank/ate at this phase? I can tolerate SF Jello and Popsicles and that's about it, I would like to try some broths but anything that I even smell turns my stomach. Also (sorry for all the questions) I know we are supposed to avoid citric fruits PO, however I am finding that a lot of the G2 drinks and Popsicles have citric acid in them, is it alright to still be eating/drinking them? And finally as far as BMs sorry I know tmi, but all mine have been completely liquid and at least 3-5 times a day, again normal or should I be worried? This journey is far from the easy way out and I wish the people who thought that could go through a day or two of what it actually feels like. But I know that this is the best decision I've made my entire life and I'm so excited to see how much I'll lose and how healthy I can get! Thanks for all your infor. And help! Shelby

My surgeon said it gave him insight into how well I was healing. By day 6 or so the liquid was turning a yellowish pink (I know, TMI!) and he said that was a really good sign that all was well with my stomach closure.

I'm also 6 days post op! No pain but abdomen tightness and pressure. I'm also nauseous thinking about food...even food I loved! Lol. I also have diarrhea (tmi? Sorry) and I hate my protein shakes. Am I normal?! Blah. Down 14 lbs!!!

Flavoured yoghurt?
Susan-031314 replied to ssbills's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Smooth yogurts just after surgery. Greek if you can find and eat it. Blend it if you need to, but no fruit lumps to get caught in staple line just after surgery. I would get the cherry type and spit our the cherry chunks after sucking out the flavor. (TMI?) I would measure out my 2 oz serving in the 1st couple of weeks, but bottom line, a one serving container could be 2 meals. I love my Greek yogurt, now. -
What is the strangest, weirdest, or most unexpected thing to happen to you after having the sleeve? I'm looking forward to reading about peoples experiences. No such thing as TMI here either!

Post Op June 2014 Sleevers
LovetoDive replied to KimGettingSlim's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
June 2nd - Going to my 1st post op appt today... NERVOUS. I see how much today. I fell like I lost more from the 4 days of Pops and Jello then surgery. I may never eat a pop or jello again. BLAH! Aygad - that is fantastic... I can't get that many calories! It REALLY messed up my progress for a while... and, TMI my colon! I'm trying to get in 2 shakes. myfitnesspal.com has given me so much info. -
I had my 2 week post op visit today and am THRILLED to say that I get to advance my diet from pureed to soft food. NO more gross chicken! But I found that I am quite dehydrated. I was not surprised as my nausea is not going away and I have way too many loose bowel movements (TMI sorry). The nurse practitioner said that it's very common and that I should be eating a little right when I get up and drinking lots more. UGH! I am soooo thirsty! But of course I have to "sip" not gulp or I get sicker even faster. Trying to find a happy medium here. Any suggestions? And, yes, I am on both Protonix and Zofran.

How long till you had a BM post op?
JillC878 replied to Shiner86's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My story might be too TMI and if it is, I'm sorry. Just hoping I can help. The first day I came home (3days after surgery) and has a few very watering BMs. Then NOTHING for days and days. At my post-op visit I mentioned it and they told me to take laxatives (keep in mind I had been following MD orders and taking stool softeners every day). It still took a few more days of taking laxatives before I could go. When I did it very painful and eventually there was bleeding involved (due getting hemorrhoids from the straining I assume). The continued until the next post-op visit when I told the MD about it. The MD told me to take a specific laxative that pulls moisture to your bowl and that is what makes you go. He told me that this happens with some WLS pts. and to just take this laxative when needed (he said it may be everyday or it may be once a month). You are not feeling constipated so you are probably OK. Are you still on narcotic pain meds? If so, this is more then likely the reason. If it becomes uncomfortable in ANY way, call your MD. If there is pain involved, call your MD. Don't forget to tell your MD about all of it when you have a post-op visit. -
Constipation keeps returning
LivingFree! replied to AR40's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Are you able to get in your 64 oz Water in yet at 7 wks? It also may just be as you reach more solid foods in your eating plan you will become more regular again. But there are a lot of people who get their 64 oz in and still have the constipation problems. But keep talking with your doc until he gives you some relief. Don't suffer. What I'm going to say about coffee is controversial but, of course, it depends on what your surgeon says especially at your early stages of healing. Most WLS patients are advised to stay away from ALL COFFEE for at least a few months post-surgery. Some are advised NEVER to drink it again. I was allowed to drink decaf after about 6 weeks. I have to tell you--I have never had a constipated day in my 3 years since surgery. Okay so this is a little TMI--Like clockwork, within an hour or two after drinking just one 8 or 12 oz cup of coffee every morning, any worry about having constipation is "eliminated" (if you know what I mean!). Maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones. I never drink any MORE than that because I am cautious about too much acidity in the sleeve, and I always make sure I drink at least 12 oz of water shortly after I've had my coffee. So many different things work for different people--just wanted to share my little "secret" that works for me. I hope you find something that gives you relief SOON. Good luck. . . -
Do you hope to get smaller than your goal? Why or why not?
AuriP replied to LilMissDiva Irene's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was never really below a size 11/12 as a teen and was about 150. I'm pretty short at 5'2". My goal is about 145-150 although I wouldn't mind getting into the 130's. I want to get to a size 8. Mostly though I want to be rid of my many asthma attacks during the summer and TMI Alert: my spastic bladder problems. Otherwise I ultametly want to settle below 150 after the regain. -
Still nauseous after 10 days plus no stamina
KrissySMD replied to KrissySMD's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't know what the back pain would be. Other than referred pain from your tummy or gas that you don't even know you have. I stil have pain in the larger incision. They said that would hyrt the longest because it's where they pull the stomach through. (TMI truly) But I'm glad they told me. Now I need to get walking more. -
I am 2 weeks out so I'll answer what I can... I'm still in a recliner and am planning on being there for another 2 weeks probably. I am able to get in my 64 oz and 70 g Protein now. I was able to probably as of day 9 or 10. The gas pains left as of day 6/first bm (sorry tmi) BUT i am still having active gas creation at both ends (very embarrassing since i've been at work all week in a quiet cubicle setting) Get up in the night to do what? Bathroom or just walk? I haven't gotten up at all but I also was using pain meds immediately before bed up til a day or two ago which knocks me out. I've been having trouble getting up in the morning. Good luck to you in your recovery!

millergirl314 replied to Mia Eck's topic in The Gals' Room
Yes!!! Almost confident enough to try some special moves.... Lol My problem is that I'm only 3 mos out but I have some loose skin on my lower tummy from going up and down in my weight all my life and having babies, so (sorry TMI) when I ride my man my belly jiggles all around lol and if I see it at all it makes me really self conscious. Does it get easier to deal with all that while gettin'nasty? -
Dr. Trace Curry-Cincinnati, Ohio
Sunrise07214 replied to Sunrise07214's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, I guess I wasn't dehydrated, I just couldn't pee lol. So I'm stuck with a catheter until Monday...yay lol. I've noticed any stomach pain comes with some gurgling and gas. I only take one small sip then wait about 10 seconds and repeat. I'm tolerating most everything I've ingested. TMI but I got the worse yeast infection Tuesday night. Never had one before but it is worse than the incision or stomach pains. And thank you for the compliment, you are so sweet! You looked great for just having a major operation! Lol. I woke up with quite a bit of nausea. But after all that was taken care of, I was fine. Do you feel much restriction? The only time I know I drank too much or too fast is that my stomach makes a gurgling noise. It's hard to realize that I actually have 85% less of my stomach when only consuming liquids lol. And by any chance do you know what size of boogie Dr. Curry uses? You know I would love to have your email or phone number so we can communicate a little better -
Less than a week!
Sunrise07214 replied to Sunrise07214's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Still pretty sore, huge tmi but I want to let other know because I wasn't prepared for it. I just got a huge yeast infection Tuesday night. It is actually worse than the incision and stomach pains. Having all that on top of having a catheter, recovery has been a little rough. I still wouldn't change my decision though. I have been having a little regrets, but then I look at how happy everyone is with their sleeves and I get over it quite quickly. -
Anyone getting sleeved in July or August? Looking for buddies!
MistyAnnMoon829 replied to abbyfran7's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I first started my antiobiotics I had so much nausea for 2 to 4 hours after each pill for the first day and a half, then I was fine. Took the body some time to get used to the pills. I like to think it was the death of the little beasties that was making me feel sick. They are being punished for causing me to push back my surgery a month. Oh I just remembered, I also had two absolutely terrible side effects of the Clarithromycin, my mouth constantly tasted gross and I got my first ever yeast infection (TMI, I know but I like to be overly honest at times). If you get Clarithromycin (though from what i'm told it can happen with any antiobiotic because they are killing bacteria, good and bad) try and offset it by eating a lot of yogurt with acidiphillus and chew lots of gum or suck on hard candy/mints. The two weeks go by quickly. -
Top 10 things you want to be able to do after the surgery
jtickle replied to mal0712's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I forgot all about the lady business area. I haven't had skinny sex since I was 17, I'm 34 now. Heck, I was overweight then too, I was somewhere around 220. Sex in assorted positions would be nice. I know TMI!! My bypass is June 25th. -
