    Scared I won't be successful

I agree, whether we say it or not, we all have a fear of failing. My best friend had sleeve surgery in 2016 and lost 100 pounds in 9 months. It completely transformed her life. We’ve had several discussions about this same subject and she has said to me very honestly that even though she sees her amazing success everyday, she still wonders if she will be successful There’s a lot of psychological and emotional factors involved with this HUGE choice. My husband and I decided to go on the journey together. He has cardiomyopathy and several ailments. By this Christmas his health was deteriorating fast and it was time to take drastic measures. Unfortunately our insurance didn’t pay for WLS but we were determined just the same and paid for it ourselves. We met with our surgeon for our initial consultation Jan 23. My husband was sleeved Apr 9 and my surgery was last week. My husband has lost 63 pounds already. It has been truly life changing. By the time it came time for my surgery I was absolutely convicted that it was the right choice for me. Five days post surgery I had already lost 9 pounds. It’s CRAZY! I’m confident that we will be successful and you will too. When I have doubts, I look at before and after photos and visualize my “new body”. Losing even 50 pounds is a major victory and if that’s where I land I’ll take it. Good luck to you and keep us updated on your journey.

    Pregnant & Banded

The official Inamed position is your Band should be deflated completely. However, depending on how much you weigh (usually the more the better for this case), many docs will play with your fill level in order to ensure that you don't gain too much weight, but gain enough. This is a decision that needs to be made by your surgeon and your OB together... so you really need to contact both of them. Even if they want to keep a partial fill in, many surgeons recommend unfilling during your first trimester due to nausea issues... and some will unfill just prior to delivery as well as one often vomits during transition. Please contact your surgeon and talk with her about it. The first trimester is critical for development... so this is not something you want to procrastinate about. You can unfill now adn then refill in your second trimester, if it seems like you are gaining too fast. Can you take prenatals? There are some chewable ones out there, or at least there used to be? If not, at least find a chewable with 600-800 mcg folic acid.

    Lapband vs lapband with plication?

no one WLS is better then the next..all WLS require work and a mental change and a def change in eating habits and begin to exercise to make the most of whatever surgery one gets. the plication as my dr told me is my stomach folded into itself and stitched to make a small banana like (sleeve) if you will..it will (and has) helped me eat less and since this is a new procedure and still in early trials, i had to sign waivers on it...my dr did it pro bono for me....i was super morbid obese and the dr wanted me to have the bypass and i said no.....so he offered me this with the band but STRESSED that if didnt follow the lap band rules (eating my allotted amounts, stop eating junk food and begin to (move), no WLS would help me...... most WLS can and will help one lose at the beginning (the pre and post op diets helps with fast mainly all Water weight loss) and its amazing and its a confidence booster......and then when people REALIZE that they cant eat what they use too and just push it and overeat anyhow or not follow the rules, then the surgery isnt working..and 10 or more posts a day on this forum saying what am i doing wrong etc.. get whatever one you want but understand that its not a miracle....it will help you if you help it...i am living proof of that......but i also know/understand if i dont do my part the bypass, the sleeve or the DS or the band or plication wont work..people rush into WLS in my opinion thinking i had surgery and now i will automatically lose 100 pounds in a week..doenst work that way....a total mindset and attitude change is a must for success..esp when one was as large as me when i started..i either did it the right way, or got bigger...i had no other options.

    That Darn Shoulder Pain

The shoulder pain is from eating too much or too fast..I get it every now and then ..I am 8 months post op.

    Do I need a fill?

I agree w/ vinesqueen about the "normal portions" concept. My doctor says that if you're eating healthy food then go ahead and eat until satisfied. So basically, I don't agree with the concept of bandsters only supposed to eat 1 cup or whatever at a time. Baloney...at least for me. It takes a lot more for me to feel satisfied and my doctor is fine with that. Your description sound like you need a fill. When your restriction isn't right it becomes easy for old habits to start sneaking back like gulping and eating too fast. So, if you've got room in your band then talk to your doc and ask for a fill. Good luck!

    Post Op Discomfort

I agree with TQUAD64. You need to give your body time to recuperate or your healing time could be longer. I've had multiple surgeries, also, and I can tell you when I went to fast it longer to heal. Take your time and talk to your doc, see what he thinks. Personally, I would wait.

    water

I'm a huge water drinker too. Learning to not drink with meals was a big deal for me .. probably the hardest part, but you do get the hang of it. I've never felt dehydrated, I just changed the times I drink. I down heaps of it from an hour after breakfast to right before lunch. Then an hour after lunch to right before dinner. After dinner though, I only wait about 15 mins before I start drinking .. I just try to make myself not eat anymore even if I feel hungry from washing out the pouch. I'd probably have 6 large glasses of water between dinner and bedtime. That said, I can't guzzle it anymore, especially in the mornings. Only time I can still drink it fast is if I'm at the gym, for some reason.

    water

I wondered the same thing before I was banded. I have NO problem with drinking water, as much as I want as fast as I want. I just make sure it is about 1 hour after a meal. Good luck!
  9. True - they dont do the bypass in Australia, probably you could get it done if the lapband failed, but its not the first choice for most bariatric surgeons. Too risky, too complicated, not good enough long term results. Longer term stats are showing that you lose more slowly with the lapband and its more dependent on personal habits (which is a good thing in my opinion) but you get greater weight maintenance at the end of the journey, compared to GBP where there's a significant proportion of people who lose fast and then begin to regain. So easy choice for me as I wouldnt have been able to find a surgeon to do a bypass but I would never have considered it given the size of my weight problem - simply not worth the risk of malnutrition and the surgical risks.

    8 months out

These are some of the critical success factors for me: Eating slowly and chewing thoroughly. Eating protein first. Focusing on reaching or exceeding my protein and water targets every day. Taking my Vitamins and supplements. And, exercising. Amen to every single one of those! I do occasionally eat too fast, but I always make my protein and water goals, work out at least 3 times a week, takeall my vitamins daily, never eat and drink at the same time, and never graze.

    fill or not??

hey guys i need tons of help here!! i'll just start that i am 19 years old and in college living with three other roommates. i am 5ft 9in and started at 207lbs. i am down to 165 which is awesome......but my goal weght is about 150. i have been dealing with a lot of emotional stress the past few years and i will feel finally done with all this when i reach my goal weight! anyway...... i have had 3 fills......and the third one was really tight, which was in september. i continued to lose weight but there was A LOT of food i could not eat. and that made this very hard because i would try to eat a lot of things and PB them. My roommates were kind of curious what was going on and also it stressed me out because i didn't feel like i even had the chance to make "good" or "bad" decisions with food or portion decisions. Which for me is also part of this whole thing...trying to have a moderate normal relationship with food. Now, I have been at the same weight for a good couple of months and I can eat a big variety of foods. Things still get stuck every couple of days or if i eat way too fast. So i am not losing weight and I am frustrated because i feel like I am eating a lot.....i am eating a lot. i work out every day and my metabolism is keeping up, but...... emotionally i just want to reach my goal and be so called normal. i don't know whether to get another fill or not because i don't want to be so restricted again to where I PB every day and i can't eat very many things. that makes me upset as well. i don't want my roommates wondering what's going on as well.( they obviously don't know about my surgery) ADVICE anyone please???? thanks so much- alex*

    I'm Scheduled for December 26th!

Wow! That's so fast! Mine is as far out as it is to hopefully allow me to get a leave of absence from work. They're being difficult so we'll see.

    I'm Scheduled for December 26th!

I have not been scheduled have to get insurance approval which should be turned in this week then scheduled. I hope it is very soon because I need a hernia repair when I have surgery and I am in so much pain from it. I will push them as fast as possible because of this problem. Monday will be my last doctor approval then off to insurance. I did talk to the coordinator and she said insurance (Humana) takes up to 30 days for approval and since I have so many comorbities I really don't see a problem with approval.
  14. Good morning fellow bandsters!! I had surgery 12/9/10 and I'm doing well. As you can see from my ticker, I'm over halfway to my goal. It feels great! I'm registered to run a 5k next month. I would have never thought a year ago that I would be doing this. I have been training for it and I can easily run the entire thing nnow. Before, going to the mailbox was hard. I think alot of times we focus solely on the numbers on the scale instead of the other great things happening on this journey. Things like losing inches, eating less, getting more active, eating healthier and just having a different mindset about our health. And as some of know....it has to start in the mind before the body follows. For those just starting out or only a few months post op...hang in there. I was discouraged too. The scale wasn't moving fast enough, I thought that I would just start dropping weight after surgery and continue until I got to goal. That didn't happen. I thought that the band would just stop me from eating. That didn't happen. I was discouraged because I wanted bigger fills and my doc was only doing small amounts at a time. Now in hindsight, I'm glad that they were small amounts because it gave me time to wrap my head around the lifestyle changes I needed to make. For the new bandsters or the ones struggling, keep your appointments, schedule nutrition visits, join a support group. I truly believe that post op care is critical. Sorry this is so long, but I wanted to share this with everyone. Good luck!!

    Food Police

Believe me.....EVERYONE thinks they know everything. You learn real fast who your true friends are. I haven't had surgery yet but I am hoping for August. But I just talked to a few people about the possiblity of getting LapBand and started getting judged and lectured. So now I have decided "IT'S NOBODIES BUSINESS". People just don't understand that we Banders get educated and have support groups and forums for all our questions and help. We don't need our friends, loved ones, or co-workers to POLICE us. Be strong. WE ALL WILL GO THROUGH SOME TYPE OF PREJUDICE OR POLICEING!!
  16. based on your ticker you had little compared to some to loose believe it or not the initial weight loss is the greatest but our bodies adjust even though we aren't loosing weight on the scale your body is changing it will go down just not as fast as you would like the more you have to loose the faster it is in the beginning. i was loosing 2 1/2 pounds a day in the beginning but not towards the end. take a picture and put it side by side a week later you will notice a difference. Just remeber we didn't gain the weight overnight and we won't loose it that fast either. btw i'm not saying becasue you have little to loose that it is a bad thing.

    Calling BS......getting irritated

as long as you are losing, then i say you are doing great such a pity you cant see that...but you will just because the scale is not moving as fast as we'd like, by continuing to eat right and exercise, the weight loss will catch up........if you lose inches, you my dear are losing weight.. remember where you started........better now huh?
  18. Thank you for your fast response, much appreciated
  19. I will try to explain it. Lets start with not losing weight and not enough calories. Many many years ago people had to hunt for their food. They would gather as much as they could before winter because the winter time was lean times. Our bodies learned to hold onto weight during those lean winter times. If they lost weight during those times they would eventually die. So fast forward to today. Our bodies believe when we cut calories we are in lean winter times. So it holds onto the fat and weight with the idea of protecting and saving your life. It does not want you to starve to death. Since we all know we no longer have lean winter times and food is plentiful we have to have patience during our starvation times. When your body more specific your brain realizes we are not starving it starts to lose that weight. Increasing calories will help jump start it. Now on to your second question - how we lose inches and not weight. I don't have a scientific answer for it. However I would bet money that DL does have articles on it. My doc did say that this was the way it works. If I had to guess I would say it had to do with our bodies catching up to what has been happening during the weight loss. Also working out helps to sculpts our bodies. I have been losing and gaining the last five pounds for several months, but everyone keeps saying I am losing weight. I keep telling them no my weight is stable, but I believe that I am still losing inches as my clothes are fitting better and better. I hope that helps a little. Hopefully DL will chime in with articles!

    how long?

It depends. My surgeon's office said 2-3 weeks is average but my claim was submitted on a Thursday and approved by Monday (which was unusually fast).
  21. I'm just about 3 weeks out of surgery, and thinking of switching to only weighing monthly. I don't want to become obsessive about the number on the scale and I don't want to constantly be trying to change how I eat / exercise just because I'm not losing as fast as I think I should. I want to do what my doctor told me to do and let that be the end of it. My question is, does anyone else do this? Has anyone else done it from this early in the process? Is it doable, or will I most likely just go crazy and weigh every day anyway? If you weigh monthly, are you happy with that? Are your losses still normal / good?
  22. Great to have that favorite pair of jeans to motivate us! It can be a problem that we lose weight so fast we will miss being able to wear some of the clothes on the way down because they are the wrong season while we are that size. Yet, a problem we are happy to have! Good idea to catch a sale and get a couple of pairs of pants. It is easier to get by with tops that are a little big. Too funny about the underwear suspenders!!!
  23. Thank you! I am feeling pretty good right now. At first I struggled a bit I was so tired but I couldn’t sleep and it was frustrating because I felt restless but I am doing so much better now [emoji3]. Good luck with your surgery you will do just fine trust me I was nervous for no reason everything happens so fast.

    changing sizes......

Also ask around if any friends are or know a seamstress. I had three pair of pants tailored at the waste, so I could wear them a bit longer, and that was less expensive than new pants. Also agree with the posts to check out the thrift stores; and the clearance racks at the less expensive department stores - tops for $3-$4! I have been lucky to have some friends going through this ahead of me, and passing stuff to me. Now I am passing on my big stuff to others. I haven't dropped sizaes that fast, but when I do buy something, I try it on, and choose the more snug size knowing in a short while it will be loose.
