  1. There are many vegetarian protein powders available at health food stores that contain pea protein or other lactose free proteins- Vega is one brand I have seen there.

    post removal diet?

I'm a vegetarian so meat won't be added at any time. Im thinking yogurts & cheese & beans soon. But I'm just a bit cautious of foods still, as I dont want to vomit or have my stomach hurt. And very concerned about gaining weight. So I'm going to start using myfitness pal to track things and stick to it. Right now no exercise, just walking as much as I can. My surgeon wasn't very detailed about things and I didn't see him post op. Hoping to get the details on Thursday.
  3. Thanks! I actually had my first post op "out with friends on a Friday night" tonight. It was my doctor's son 's 18th birthday and we went to a pizza place. I drank 1/2 glass of water, had 1 piece of calamari, 3/4 of the toppings of a piece of vegetarian pizza and one bite of chocolate birthday cake. I was stuffed so I came home and rode my recumbent bike 4 miles to get my digestion rolling. Preop it would have been 2 pints beer, loads of calamari, 2-3 pieces of pizza, a big piece of cake with ice cream, and probably home to sneak another piece or 2 of pizza. Pretty good night, I'd say.
  4. Has anyone considered a raw vegan diet after surgery? I am a vegetarian and have been for many years and have thought about this recently. It seems it would be easy to transition into this after surgery. Any opinions on this?

    Losing it!

I've been avoiding the kitchen when my husband makes dinner. Tonight my daughter was having a my down right before dinner so I got to see the amazing ham, cheese bread and Pasta. It smelled so good. I seriously thought about getting a meat grinder so I could have some ham. I miss meat. I don't like being a vegetarian at all. I seriously almost cried and went in my room. I just want to share a nice dinner with my family again. Yesterday I took my daughter to McDonalds. It smelled disgusting. The only thing I could have was milk and Water. So I got water. I watched her eat her Happy Meal and I didn't even want a bite. I'm thankful that she is so thin and has such good eating habits so I don't feel bad about her having a burger and fries here and there.
  6. I had my surgery at age 21 and I'm 1year 2 months out. -110 pounds. I was also a low BMI sleeve at 35 but Apple shaped so it was a higher health risk. Your sons eating habits sound a lot like mine. I've been a vegetarian since I was 9 and really health conscious, but I was eating enough healthy vegetarian food to feed three people at each meal!! The sleeve has been a great tool for me and my only regret at this point was not doing it sooner. I hated exercise and now I see the ability to do it as a gift, since my weight was causing me to have mobility issues. Heck, I have. a career promoting a health club and selling memberships!!! If he's ready to really commit, then he should do it. I love myself for the first time since I can remember.
  7. I became a vegetarian and dropped 50lbs quickly (pre op) I plan in incorporating fish back into my diet now that I am post op and becoming a Pescetarian. People who use fish as their main source of protein statistically have the longest life span then vegetarians. I'd say go for it. I think dairy from cows is awful for you! I 100% support this decision lol. You will be amazed at how your skin changes!
  8. I'm 9 months post op, 98 lb. weight loss and was feeling wonderful until last Monday. I had just had my Dr. visit on Friday, and everything was great! Except my hair loss is getting worse and so noticeable:( Has anyone had success with stopping hair loss? After dinner on Monday night I had a trip to the ER after having a severe gall bladder attack. I thought I was having a heart attack! So scary! It has calmed down, am now following a vegetarian diet plan. I see my surgeon on Wed. so I guess the decision will be made about GB surgery. As of now, I don't know how many gallstones I have. My regular doctor told me one was 4 milliliters. I would live to hear from any fellow gastric sleevers who have had these problems too.

    how often to eat

I live in India and we dont get tinned food or many options of high Protein. I am also a vegetarian most of the times...so its all the more difficult. But we have to go for protein shakes for the rest of our lives I think. Its a life long effort and i will do it.without going off the track!

I do fine as a vegetarian, but I think after all restrictions are lifted I may want to transition to a vegan diet excluding milk and egg products. Which is primarily where I get my protein sources from (whey, eggs) now.
  12. My doctor's clinic has two in-house nutritionists. I do think it's very helpful. I would have had no idea how to navigate meals and supplements without their guidance early on. The sleeve is just so different from anything else one has experienced prior. But, I would be very sure to find a nut that not only has sleeve specific experience, but vegetarian sleeve also. I am a "flexitarian" and used to eat 50 - 75% vegetarian. I found that very difficult to continue with the sleeve and Protein requirements of 75-80 grams a day. It can be done, but your options are limited. If you search on here, there have been threads in the past from veg sleevers that I'm sure would be helpful to you.
  13. So, my insurance does not require a nutritionist. I'm thankful that I'm already approved but wonder if I need to see a nutritionist. I am a vegetarian, so I'm already a bit concerned about figuring out what and how much I should eat. I guess I answered my own question. But, please tell me - do you find your nutritionist very helpful in your daily meal planning?

How Do You Plan Your Meals?

When I go to the grocery store I get a lot of healthy things just for me. Every single day I prepare my breakfast & lunch to take to work & any snacks. If I don't, there's a very healthy vegetarian restaurant by my work that prepares organic healthy food - so I have no excuse!

Howdy, What are you looking for? If you got your Protein before from a vegetarian diet, you're doing good. Btw, are you talking vegetarian or vegan? Vic
  16. I feel like it's a long shot, but I'm wondering if there is a vegan or mostly vegan post bariatric person out there that I can talk to. I've been a vegetarian for 17 years and I think I may finally make the transition. Thanks!

Morningstar Farms is a line of vegetarian products in the freezer section. Their "griller" is a vegetarian burger, and they make veg sausage patties, "chick'n" patties and other stuff. Seems like they sit well with me, sometimes better than actual meat, and are really high in Protein. How many carbs are in that stuff. I thought that they replace the meat and fat with sugar type binders. My doctor was adamant about reducing any type of sugars.

Hey, also try the Morningstar farms stuff! I had an "original griller" today - 15g Protein and perfect size! I even put a piece of cheese on it (I'm eating too much cheese), and a little mustard. I also had a vegetarian crispy chicken patty the other day, and that was yummy too - 22 grams for two! I'm not doing well with regular chicken, but the veggie chicken did quite well. Just a thought... Oh, and I tried salmon yesterday. Let's just say that did not go well. 'Nuff said.

    Thinking About Removing My Band

Yeah, I actually work for the insurance company that covered my band, and I went through nutritional counseling on my own for 6 months prior to moving forward in the band process. With the coverage for the surgery itself, it was stipulated that I would pay out of pocket for an additional 24 sessions of phone nutritional counseling to make sure that I was on the right track. The counselor would go over my food tracking with me, we'd talk about introducing new foods, what worked, what didn't work, etc. It was really helpful in developing better eating skills and coping skills (I was an emotional eater, now I redirect it to walking the dogs, sewing, etc). It worked fantastically for me for about the first year, and it's only really been the last 6 months that I've had so many problems. I avoided tough meats (we were actually vegan for the first 9 months after the surgery, then slowly started adding in animal Proteins again), pastas, breads, etc with only the occasional slip up food wise. I was very tolerant, so she gave me a fill from 6 ccs to 6.5 ccs, and then I started having the issues with being stuck, PB-ing, etc. We removed the .5, and it just never went back to that sweet spot. I'd start PBing and straight up vomiting with such force that I'd end up with burst blood vessels in and around my eyes (sorry to be graphic), and never know what would trigger it. I'd go back to full liquids and mushies, and then per the nurse start trying to work those super moist animal proteins in again, tolerate them fine, and then suddenly a salad or a portion of meat that I'd tolerated before would set me off and I'd be sick again. We still review my foods, and can't find any sort of pattern. I'm as unfilled as I can be right now and had a vegetarian chili for dinner last night. I managed a quarter cup before feeling full, but when I woke up this morning I could still feel it sitting in my pouch, so I'm back to broth today. I totally hear you in saying that if that's what it takes, I'll do it... and I totally made that commitment to myself when I started this journey, expecting ups and downs, but that I'd finally settle into a routine and know what was right and wrong for me to eat. Not knowing any of that, being scared to eat, and still being at my surgery day starting weight 18 months later is finally just wearing on me to the point where I want to be done. It's a scary and very emotional place for me... I don't like it! Hopefully tomorrow's appointment will give me some answers though. Not knowing is the hardest part for me.

It's comforting to hear from all of you on this meat eating. I've had success with a little shrimp and a little white fish, and as I've said before, a little of the (bad) deli meats, like turkey ham. But all have to be cut small to begin with, no more than cubes 1/2 inch per side, and then chewed twenty or thirty times each before swallowed. I'm chicken of chicken! And I've got a beef with beef! I'll keep trying them every so often though, just to see if anythings changed. But mostly I'll keep eating beans and peas and whey protein. Like Greenize said, we're mostly vegetarians now.

I'm the same as you...three months out and still have trouble with chicken. My nut said to try the dark meat (forget the old diet rules). I've also tried the rotisserie chicken from the market, and when it's fresh, that seems to be good. But, grilled chicken...nope. The other thing that worked well and I really liked was vegetarian "chicken" patties. They're slightly breaded and crisp, so they taste like a crispy chicken patty, but that seems to be great and packed with protein. I'm also doing okay with beef, but don't really want to eat a lot of that. Even deli turkey I have to be careful with. But, we all find what works for us, right? My nut says if something doesn't work, give it a couple of weeks and try it again.

I can eat fish and shrimp very well but I find that most meats are hard on my stomach. Ground meat sits pretty well but that is all. I was a BIG meat eater before surgery but I told my husband just last night I might as well be a vegetarian. Lol. I guess I have had the foamies although it feels like drainage in the back of my throat before I throw up or something don't agree with me.
