Hello, getting a revision from a band and am starting to have some questions. For a person who suffers from constipation which revision would be best the sleeve or bypass? Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App

This might not help, but I could not afford a band either. But my husband told me that I was always good at getting new credit cards. We were way in debt, but I tried anyway and the credit union approved me for another $8,000. It sounds insane to accept that loan, but my band is paying for itself. If the credit union refused me, I'd have written checks in advance to a bunch of cheesy quick-cash places. I'd have pawned all my jewelry, cashed in all my change. I was dying. There was no choice. In order to pay for my band I made a couple sacrifices. I used to get manicures 2ce a month. No more. And I cancelled our Arrowhead Water delivery and bought a $20.00 Britta filter. My food bill is crazy now. I don't pick out anything for myself. My meals are whatever food my husband doesn't finish. I was spending tons on Taco Bell, Jack in The Box, etc. Fast food 5-10 times a week. Now fast food sounds gross to me. After the surgery all I wanted was liquids cuz I was afraid to eat anything else. Once they allowed me real foods, my body craved healthy stuff. Like my body knows it needs Protein. I was craving tomatoes and asparagus. My credit card payment is $130.00 a month. I found ways to come up with the cash. It's worth every red cent. I have dual coverage. I have Blue Shield through my work and Health Plan of Nevada through my husband's. Both approved the bypass, neither approved the band. I could have appealed it, but I wanted to start living right this second. Screw the insurance companies. As far as this new debt, hell, the credit union shouldn't have given me the money cuz I was behind on my mortgage with them, so let them try to repo my band!

40 and headed for Fabulous

Hello, I am 5"1, my highest weight 256lbs, currently 220 lbs, have been fighting diabetes and up/down weight for over 10 years . I was able to get off insulin 5yrs ago, but still take these big horse diabetic pills daily.. and still have a problem with eating right, which I can feel the after effects of eating too much sugar/carbs. I am still on the fence as to gastric bypass or sleeve, because the bypass has high success rate 90 percent to put diabetes in remission, but it also in the most dangerous ..This Tuesday 5/20/14 I go for my surgeon visit ,psych eval. and nutrition visit total of 3 hours. If I am considered a good candidate they will give me a surgery date. I am really nervous about the surgery. I have been lucking enough to have had a lot of hospital stays in my 43yr old life. But, I will keep you posted on how it goes and my journey, thanks a lot for the post. It is good to know that someone else is can understand my journey. -

Should I Tell The Inlaws About My Surgery?
soontobeskinnymini replied to soontobeskinnymini's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I should add ----Only reason why I haven't really told them already is my mom had it done 4 years ago and they had the nastiest response and rude things to say to me. Her sister had major complications during gastric BYPASS which she doesn't know there is a difference so she said my mom was taking the "easy way out" and that it's an extremely dangerous and unnecessary surgery. Even with MIL's type two diabetes she still eats whatever she wants including desert every night so she wouldn't understand the whole me wanting to be healthy part. I don't want to be judged or for her to think I'm being irresponsible since I have two kids under 3 and if something god forbid goes wrong...... but like somebody said I don't want her to find out and be mad I didn't tell them either. -
Last Friday, they scheduled my surgery for Friday, November 2nd. Today, I got a call this morning from my suregons office stating the operating room overbooked (and the assisting surgeon wasn't available anyway) and they had to move my surgery to 11/13. Not too disapointed, but that is almost a two week delay. On 11/13 I am the first surgery of the day, so I have to be at the hospital by 5am. THIS WILL HAPPEN!!! I can do this! Thanks to all of you who posted kind words to my previous post. One month to go... The countdown has begun. My surgery date will be here before I know it.

Why does food get stuck?(curious)
Djmohr replied to zthompson12's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Which surgery did you have? I know with bypass they make the opening (Stoma) between your new pouch and your intestines small. In the beginning months you also have swelling on top of it but once that swelling goes down the opening is a little bigger. I was told that at the beginning, the opening is no bigger than the top of an eraser. That is why you must chew like crazy. Now nearly two years post op, that opening is definately bigger but I still cannot swallow pills that are too fat or food that is not chewed well. In addition if you eat too quickly, you get that same stuck feeling and it can really end a meal and leave you short of Protein for the day if you don't go back and eat more later. -
Just Got My Bipap Machine Today
CCWriter replied to Catracks's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some great advice from Lissa. I was diagnosed with REM-related sleep apnea a couple of years ago. Before that, I'd have lots of microsleeps on the interstate when I was driving to our weekend place. I could hardly stay awake at work in the afternoon. I found out my "mild sleep apnea" was causing my oxygen levels to go down to about 80 percent and I was waking up about 13 times an hour in REM. In other words, I was not getting any REM and no deep sleep. And -- I'm just thinkin' -- having your O2 drop that much every night while you're sleeping can't be good for any part of your body. Ironically, the first time I used my CPAP, I knew it would help me. I HATED IT -- but I KNEW it would help me. My husband who works overseas, whose first response to seeing a picture of me in it, wanted to know if I might not have to wear it when he was in country. But after the first night I wore it when he was here, he changed his tune. He says I used to sleep like an egg beater, now says when I put it on, I go right to sleep and don't move. And I don't snore anymore. Apparently, I sawed some good ones before the CPAP. Now, I wake up rested and revived and rarely have microsleeps. The only thing I wasn't prepared for how differently my body felt -- because I had a "new normal." You know how you hear that people who have heart bypass surgery sometimes get depressed. I understand that now, because I had a lot of trouble getting used to my new energy. I figure that eventually, I would have a significant microsleep on the interstate and I would have killed myself or someone else. Thankfully, that didn't happen and hopefully never will because I am much more careful to use the CPAP before I know I have to get on the road. It will get better -- promise -- and you will make friends with the darn machine. Hope that helps, CC -

October Surgery
kisersassy replied to soontobehealthymom's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My last appointment is October 23rd then it will be the waiting on insurance approval part. So knowing I have to be on a one week pre op liquid diet I am looking at November as the earliest time for surgery -
Well Linda, let me be the first to welcome you to the forum!! You'll find a lot of great information here and answers to all of your questions. I'll answer the few I know about, but I'm currently pre-op so I won't have them all. You can use the search function at the top right hand side of the screen (if you're using a PC) to search for different threads that have answers to your questions- and the ones you can't find, just ask!! Regarding the required tests- my insurance only requires that I see a NUT (nutritionist) for 6 months, but that was the only physical appointment that was required of them. My surgeon, on the other hand, required a sleep study to check for sleep apnea, a psych evaluation, an upper endoscopy to check for h pylori, medical clearance from my PCP and a blood panel- but that's just so far. Once I get cleared by insurance, I'll then need to have pulmonary and cardiology clearance and maybe some other stuff... As far as risks are concerned, yes- there are risks of a leak. Many surgeons do a leak test AS they are operating to make sure there are none- and then after the surgery you do a swallow test to make sure that there are none. Again- I'm pre-op so any post-op people who want to chime in, please do!! The reason I'm personally choosing to do the sleeve is because it's actually less invasive than the DS or RNY but i have the option of doing either of those as a two-step surgery should I choose. (Personally, I'd rather not as I've seen many people that are super successful with the sleeve alone). The Bypass and DS actually require more cutting and the re-arrangement of your intestines so it's not really for me. Regarding your question about the staples, it is my understanding that the staples stay in... I hope I was at least a little bit helpful with your questions- and again, if there is something you need more clarification on, please ask. Everybody here is really helpful and friendly. Good luck with everything!!

Thank you berry. I initially was considering the sleeve but have recently decided bypass will probably work best for me. Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App

Anyone from Connecticut?
ALFxRNY replied to CtzBella's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Great job on the weight loss! Did you have the sleeve or the bypass if you don’t mind me asking? -
Hey there. I was banded nov 3rd of last year and yes I have had complications but I am hoping that everything is worth it in the end. You are the only one who knows if it is the right thing to do for you. Unfortunately, it is not as cut and dry as we'd like it to be. My process has been slow but I do know other people that have had no complications what so ever and yes lap banding is SOOOOO much safer as opposed to gastric bypass. The thing that sold me on lap band is that fact that I am only 24 and want to have kids someday and w/ the band since it is adjustable my dr can remove saline from it so that myself and the baby are getting all the nutrients we need and then after the baby the band can be filled. The down fall w/ the band is you are going to be spending a lot of time at the drs. Every 6-8 weeks i have to go back in for a fill or to see where I am at. This is only for the first year though and then I make the call as to when I need a fill. I don't know if this has helped at all but let me know if you have ?'s I'll help the best I can. Good luck in whatever decision you make.

Dr. Milton Owens - Anyone used Dr Lopez/Dr Owens team?
catzintj replied to StacieM's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I dont know dr. lopez. i have heard mixed reviews on here. i know that dr. huacuz and dr. kuri are two of the top surgeons. dr. ortiz also, he wrote a book on the lapband. dr. huacuz is my doctor. i have only great things to say. just call around and talk to the doctors. check out the websites and check with other patients that went to them. i of course am reccommend dr huacuz because he did my surgery and i have lost 105lbs, it will be two years for me in november. i feel super and look great. hope you find someone that you feel good about and will be as pleased as i am. let us know how you do. just dont rush to lose the weight. heal up and take it slow. you will lose the weight. time flies by and the next thing you know your planning your tummy tuck. cheers. -
lu ann. i have united health care. they rec. my pap work last wed/ i had the approval letter sat in my mailbox but guess what / the dr office put the gastric bypass code instead of the lapband code & i caught it called them mon. so it has to be resubmitted. sandie

Greetings November Sleevers..... I've had some difficulty getting enough liquids and Proteins, but today is the 4th day and everything seems to be settling down. My sleeve feels pretty comfortable and I'm moving around pretty normally. I didn't have any difficulty finishing my 30g Protein drink this a.m. and am sipping a nice chai latte now. Feels pretty normal. Not hungry, and feeling much more like I will be "myself" soon. But, get ready for this: I went downstairs to weigh myself this a.m. because I am/was convinced I must have dropped a few pounds since I went in the hospital. I have GAINED 4 lbs! I know it must be Fluid retention, no BM yet, but it was a shock, I have to tell you. I have barely eaten anything (maybe 400 calories/day?) so I wasn't expecting this. I am not alarmed but I am shocked. Has anyone else experienced a weight gain after coming home? Jeez.

Questions for those that used Dr. Rodriguez INT Tijuana
genepha posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Did you have a private room or a shared room after your surgery? If you had Plication, how long were in the hospital? I received information from their coordinator and am almost there in making my decision. I'm saving money now in hopes of having plication done in November. Thanks! genepha -
Hey ya'll - I'm doing some spring cleaning and came across the binder of information from the Kaiser Choices class I took pre-surgery. It contains info about gastric surgery in general (sleeve, bypass, and lapband), nutrition, psychological stuff, etc. It's a 3" binder chock full of all kinds of info. I'm almost a year out and don't need it anymore, so if you're contemplating surgery and don't have access to the educational classes, it's all yours. It's a big binder, so it might cost a bit to ship but if you're local (Long Beach/LA area), I'm down to meet you somewhere to give it to you. Let me know if you're interested!

My husband had surgery about 3 and a half weeks ago and eats almost nothing. Says he just can't, nothing taste good, and says he just feels full. He eat about 3/4 of a yogurt for Breakfast and maybe a few more bites of it for lunch. That's its nothing else. He does drink lots of Water. Has anyone else had this happen? He's just very weak and has no desire to try and eat. I had bypass 4 months ago and felt nothing like that. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Hi there... Just read your post... you are probably in a fat burning stage called ketosis... this happens with high Protein and low carbs... and it makes your breath and your urine smell strange. When you are in it you are putting ketones out in your urine, hence the odor. Just a thought, it could be something else too! Oh and good luck on your surgery... mine is on November 17th! Janelle

Have had surgery since 2006
tammyfrancis03@gmail.com posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Hello, I have heard alot of comments on here, it just reminds me of when I first had the Gastric-Bypass done with the ring. It's been since October/2006 and I still eat the same, very little, I still vomit alot. I'm at a good weight right now, but not with the excessive skin. I still am not comfortable in my skin. Does anyone know of a place that does plastic surgery with easy low payment plans. I live in Arizona. Or is there a meeting place to chat about our experience with this surgery. Thanks for listening.
