    January 2020 Surgery Folks

I am OVER the protein drinks, but I do use a scoop or a half of scoop of Genepro protein powder everyday, either in a smoothy, or mixed in food like beans, cooked veggies, soup, or eggs. It's got 30 grams of protein and only 58 calories. Like you, I can't get in 60 grams of protein without a little help.

Same with me. I can drink my smoothie, no problem. My recipe is very similar, a handful of baby spinach, 1/2 cup mixed berries, scoop of GENEPRO, a splash of Fairlife milk, tablespoon of greek yogurt, and a splash of banana split sugar-free syrup. This smoothie will hold me until lunch time.

Morning smoothie time! (After the first pic I add 1 c of unsweetened vanilla almond milk and 1 scoop Genepro). This has become my staple and an easy way to get in protein, fruit, and veggies (and fluid) without rushing into actual food first thing on the morning, which has always been hard for me. I hate all commerical protein drinks but can handle this we'll and it's yummy! Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk
  5. That just doesn't make sense. Proteinuria is usually a sign of kidney disease, kidney or bladder infection, or some other medical problem such as diabetes (especially accompanied with the ketones), high blood pressure, and certain cancers. Some medications can cause it, too. I've never heard of excess Protein ingestion causing proteinuria if your kidneys are functioning properly. I know you are a GENEPRO fan, and it sounds like you consume more of it than the average WLS patient that is getting most of their protein from food. That, along with your proteinuria and the fact that genepro consists of highly modified protein molecules got me thinking of a possible scenario. What if the genepro molecule is, in fact absorbed through the intestines very readily like the inventor claims. Now it's in the blood stream, but because of its altered, stable structure the body's cells can't actually break it down and utilize it. And the kidneys can't filter it properly. The only thing left for your body to do is excrete it in your urine. One way to test the theory is to cut out all genepro and start taking in the same amount of protein from 100% whey isolate and food based protein sources. If your proteinuria clears up, that goes towards supporting the theory. If not, I would seriously get on your doctor about doing additional tests. Plenty of WLS patients, body builders, athletes, etc get well over 100g of protein daily without proteinuria. I'm not a doctor, of course, but being in the veterinary world, I've got a decent background in biochemistry and the basic bodily functions of animals are more or less the the same as people. We wouldn't just change the diet of a dog or cat who has protein in their urine. We would find out why, then come up with a treatment plan.
  6. Hello, SO for everyone who uses GENEPRO Protein powder. I have been trying to get the people at Musclegen ( the company that makes it. To help me understand their claim that 1 tablespoon of their product contains 30 grams of protein when the tablespoon itself only holds 15 grams of product. Finally after posting numerous times on their website and Facebook I emailed them directly to see if they wished to send me some product to try, under my video taste tests that I do on my blog. Well they declined and also explained about the product and its claims. This one blew my mind. They do not have 30 grams of protein in one tablespoon of product. The say that their product is absorbed 3 times better than regular whey isolates so therefore the 10 grams of protein in their tablespoon is equal to the absorbed amount when you drink 30 grams with a non genepro product. Well! they do not do this knowing that sleeve patients ( I don't know about band or DS) due to the smaller surface area of the stomach absorb more per area than a normal person does. So if you are really trying to get the amount of protein you need, then you need to triple up on this stuff. I personally do not like this marketing ply of the 30 grams in one tablespoon thing. But I have no control over that.

    Genepro

I don't know your background with research and science. But if you read the label it has two ** next to that. And it says according to this study. If you pull up that study (which is the basis of their ridiculous claims) on genepros website. You'll first see the study was paid for by... Genepro! (shocker). And then if you read the actual study (which is posted on their website) you'll see that it's extremely poorly designed, and I do not believe comes even remotely close to supporting their claim. So if your surgeon said it's fine odds are he just blew you off not wanting to waste his time reading the label on a protein shake (and I can't blame them because what kind of surgeon is going to spend their times reading their patients labels and studys) But all you have to do is read it and say hmm does this look like a well designed study? Now I'm no researcher or statistician myself, but I am comfortable attempting to read a study and look for relationships and make inferences about probability. And this does not look like it proves their point. And I don't think anybody should be defending genepro unless they A) read the label, which clearly states what they're basing their claims on B ) read the study It's pretty clear to me that it's not worth it. This isn't to suggest Genepro is bad, because the odds are as a protein supplement itself it's likely the same as any other. The problem I see is that its very likely that it's not supplying remotely close to the amount of Protein that you think it is. If you're dead set on taking genepro you should probably be taking close to double doses to be getting close to as much is listed on the label.

    Genepro

As @jess9395 stated, there is no blood test that will determine if you are getting adequate protein. Hemogram - blood count CMP - Comprohensive Metaolic panel glucose level, electrolyte and fluid balance, kidney function, and liver function Vitamin D, B1, Ferratin, Pth, Folate -vitamin/mineral As far as Genepro, IMO, if this was legit they wouldn't be stating such clear falsehoods. You can't get 30 g of protein in a 15 g mass. Protein has 4 calories per gram, so why are the calories on Genepro so much lower? Finally the process they tout where they break protein molecules into smaller sizes and among other thing they remove some of the hydrogen ions, how is this even protein anymore, it is so highly manipulated?

    Genepro

CarrieB when I ask the same thing about this site selling it I got the same run around was told it is the $$ thing!! I also think that people are actually guessing on the other products about how much protien they are actually getting. So as I stated it is a win win for me and my coffee Latte's. If it was as bad as everyone says the FDA has sure been notifed and they would not allow them to sell this stating it has 30 grams of protein. BTW every other protein I tried did NOT dissolve or had a nasty taste to it. This is by far the best one I have found and just to clear up this I have tried so many different proteins in the last 5 years I would hate to add up the $$ I have spent on them. I say if it works then use it. Keep up on your blood work and if something isn't right then take a look at what you are doing. Good luck. BTW I knew this was going to happen, it has been brought up before. I will use GENEPRO until my Surgeon tells me different!!

    Genepro

Genepro is just expensive and a bit shady. I'm not quite sure how they can claim their protein shake contains 30g of protein yet is only 56 calories, when one gram of protein is 4 calories. Clearly they're either lying or misleading their customers I don't think anybody is going to have the perfect answer for you, but I know there's definitely going to be better value stuff out there that doesn't have question marks surrounding it
  11. Yay! How is everything going, ladies? I've got 4 days left!!!! All my food funerals are planned, and I bought some stuff for after surgery (robe, genepro, extension cord for my hospital stay, etc) getting kinda freaked out, honestly, but staying focused on the after surgery good stuff

    Chocolate muscle milk

They have it in Chocolate, Vanilla and Caramel. I've only tried the chocolate but for under six bucks it's not bad. Just wanted to tell you when you do see it grab what you can because they don't seem to last long on the shelves! I also get the Premier Protien bars peanut butter chocolate ones. They're great 30 grams of protein and they help my calorie intake. I'm just under 7 months out and when I'm calorie deficient I get a little weak hear and there so they're a great add. Genepro from GNC also helps on the days I'm sick of pre-made drinks. It can be added to anything. It's flavorless and I've used it in broths and other things.

    Protein

I use it in my morning g decaf tea everyday. I brew decaf tea, dump my scoop of GENEPRO into my giant insulated cup, pour a little tea into it, mix it well with a spoon, then I add the rest of my 32oz of decaf tea, my splenda and 2tbsp of fat free creamer and drink! I kill two birds this way....32oz of my liquid for the day and 31g of protein!! I have been losing every week since my surgery. I feel great and have more energy than ever!! I hope you find something that works for you! !

    Caffeine

I started green tea after surgery, didn't do coffee again until 2 months out. But I had a quick surgery, no complications, kept it slow to see what I could tolerate. I don't do cream in coffee, but I have taken to putting half a scoop of GENEPRO in my coffee with stevia and Vietnamese cinnamon.
  15. I'm 3 days post op & looking for other ways to get my protein. I have vanilla & chocolate protein powder from my nutritionist which is fine. But looking for something flavorless I can mix w broth or juice. I saw a few people on here mention Genepro. I bought that & it does not dissolve in anything. It separates & sits at the bottom or stay clumpy. Waste of $50. Any other suggestions?

    Getting protein in post-op

FOCUS on your FLUIDS!!! Your protein will come as you get further out. You definitely want to get your water in, it doesn't take us long to become dehydrated. As far as the Protein Drinks, they have a Hot Chocolate thru BariatricPal and it as 15grams of protein in it. They also sell Chicken Noodle Soup (I just didn't eat the noodles myself) it also has 15grams of protein. My favorite is GENEPRO also sold on BariatricPal. It is the only unflavored Protein I have found that I can handle. I would hate to find out how much $$ I actually paid for Protein that I couldn't handle. My nephew uses Protein, so at least my $$ wasn't totally wasted!! KEEP ON KEEPING ON!!!

    Help with protien

I really like the unflavored GENEPRO. I threw out almost a full container of unjury. I've been at goal a year and I still use it almost everyday in my coffee. I get it from Amazon.
  18. I often add unflavored powder to my coffee. I used Isopure but others have had success with GENEPRO and unjury as well. I also add them to my Soups. Tonight I'll have a cup of progresso lentil soup. It's 9 gms of Protein, but I'll add a scoop of unflavored Isopure which is 26gm making dinner a whopping 35gms of protein. While I don't use them, I don't think there is anything wrong with keeping a few in the freezer for an emergency situation. If you do a weekly food prep, there are many Indian and even Italian dishes you can premake into ramekins. Indian cooking will be very bean heavy, and if you do Italian you could go to the seafood side.

How are you getting your protein in?

In the beginning I put Genepro protein into miso soup and got a fair amount in that way

    Protein taste issues

I haven't had surgery yet, but I can definitely taste genepro and isopure. I find if I mix them with luke warm water and add them to things that are more strongly flavored it's more tolerable, although I can still taste it. I have had success with lobster bisque, chicken curry, and steel cut oats. I tried some canned campbell's soup and that was meh. The most important thing is not to heat up the protein powder. Also, sometimes I only use a half serving of the isopure because it's so much. Yes, a lot of people report their tastes changing after surgery, at least in the short term.
  21. Is anyone else struggling with the taste of protein after surgery? Before surgery with my 2 week liquid protein diet, I had no issues, but now all the protein drinks and Genepro taste like straight-up chemicals. I can barely get it down due to the smell and taste. I am having trouble meeting my protein requirements of 65 g per day because of this. Natural protein foods don't bother me like chicken, hamburger, beans, etc., but I can't eat enough of that to make up the difference and need supplementation.

Try an unflavored protein like Genepro and you can mix it in anything Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk
  24. I have a hard time with the shakes and have one more week of liquids. I purchased Genepro from Amazon due to another sleevers recommendation. Mix it in anything and it dissolves and contains 30 grams of protein in one small scoop. That is how I will get my protein until I can add soft foods. I mixed it in cream of wheat this AM with some applesauce. Even in just 1/4 cup it mixed well and no taste. Good luck.
  25. Isopure and GENEPRO are powders. Un jury & prosource are liquids. Isopure can be purchased at GNC or Vitamin Shoppe, the others have to be ordered online. Other Protein alternatives are: powdered milk, plain greek yogurt, or kefir drinks.
