    Protein

If you are struggling to eat 60 gms of protein but are eating 600 to 700 calories per day, the non-protein calories must be coming from carbs, fats or alcohol calories. 1gm of protein = 4 calories as does 1gm of carb, 1gm fat = 9 calories, 1gm alcohol = 7 calories. Say you have 50gms of protein, that would be 200cals...the other 400 to 500 are coming from something else. That or you are not consuming as many calories as you think.

    Phys evaluation

That's a really terrible question to ask someone during the evaluation. Mine asked about my home life growing up...if I was close to my parents and siblings. He mostly wanted to know that I had researched the procedure and that I didn't just impulsively jump into this...like I could with all the hoops lol. Also lots of questions about drug and alcohol use.

I'm new and the Stall posts make me roll my eyes, but Matt is always there saying, "It'll be ok. What did you eat/drink? One day can't disrupt this process. Just follow your process." So @Matt Z even though some of us may ask annoying questions - we appreciate you. I see you... and I think you're great. Also, if I ask inane questions, thank you to those on this thread who (although they may be annoyed) still come through with the empathy and clarity. I've never felt like I was annoying you based on your response... but now I may just make a Stall, Pizza, Alcohol, post just to cheese you. 😂😂 Thank you! Stacey

    Phys evaluation

My psych doctor spent the first 1.5 hours just asking me about any prior mental health treatment I've had and why I want the surgery. We went over my history of anxiety. She asked a lot of questions about if I had a history of depression, suicidal thoughts, or if I had any drug or alcohol issues, which I don't. The second 1.5 hours I took a 300 question personality test, which basically tested (again) if I was depressed or suicidal or had a tendency to be impulsive or suffer from addictions. It also had some questions about if you're happy with your job, hobbies, and how supportive your friends and family are. Stuff like that.

Aspirin and ibuprofen (and naproxen and basically every pain medicine except Tylenol/acetaminophen) are super dangerous within a week of surgery, both because it interacts with blood thinners and because it impacts your stomach lining. My team wanted me off them for 10 days before, but 1 week is the minimum. If your surgery is on the 17th, you can't have any more of them. If you do, you need to delay the surgery. My team did allow Tylenol the week of surgery, so if you have pain, try that. The cheats and the alcohol have to stop, too, immediately. More than a week before, eh, we're human. But within a week of surgery, no, you have to follow your team's rules. You've got one week to make your liver as small as possible. A large, slippery liver makes the surgery more risky, because it gets in the surgeon's way. It's a week. (And then another week or more after surgery.) You can do it!

How to get back on track

I cannot stress enough what Matt Z. posted is spot on - there is no *TRICK* or MAGICAL thing to do but hard work! Even being so new out from surgery it is sort of clear you have not yet addressed your emotional issue-connection to eating with ie. stress and life. DO NOT THINK YOUR ALONE! I am 4 yrs out from surgery and regained due to a year of over stress and horrible things happening but I recently took self stock and got myself into psychotherapy to address what I was doing to myself both mentally and physically. Nothing is wrong with you, and nothing is wrong in asking for help! Call your surgeon/weight loss team! Tell them what your going through, ASK FOR THERAPY! Not just group therapy most ALL insurance converse some form of mental health. Get what you need and DESERVE! You deserve to be healthy, you deserve peace of mind, but remember our sleeves are TOOLS, they are NOT THE SOLE ANSWER., It is work, dedication and perseverance that will get you to the finish line. We all need to remember if we were food addicts prior to surgery we will ALWAYS BE A RECOVERING FOOD ADDICT. We need to keep ourselves in check, and it is the hardest fight one can endure! Alcoholics can stay away from places that serve or sell alcohol, same with a drug addict, but we as food addict must eat to live, and it will always be a trigger struggle. So long as you truly admit that to yourself and self check and correct and get help when you spiral, you WILL BE OK! ~ChunkyChicTrying

My surgery is scheduled for October 17, 2018 and I am currently on a liver reduction diet and I've cheated several times, and drank alcohol once, and taken aspirin and ibuprofen. Are they gonna know? And will they still do the surgery? I'm worried[emoji45] Sent from my VS988 using BariatricPal mobile app

@crankymagpie that’s so good to hear! Congrats, you are on your way. As for me, I feel like I’m nesting... picking up a few things for post-surgery, (but not too much!) I’ve found my Bariatric Advantage chewable multi’s to be pretty gross, but we’ll see how it goes when I cannot eat! My pre-op diet is pretty low maintenance. I have a protein shake in the morning, fish or chicken with greens for lunch and dinner. No coffee or alcohol. I’ve lost two lbs. lol I’m looking forward to getting this over with with the support of my Mom, who will be staying with me and my two sons during this process. Nervous but excited! I’m happy to hear how supportive your partner has been. 😊 Your protein and liquids numbers are good, plus exercise- keep it up!

Sleeve Veterans: What makes you successful long term?

I know this is an old post, but I wanted to thank you for sharing. I really REALLY needed to hear this right now in my journey. I was sleeved almost exactly 3 years ago. Everything was awesome for the first 18 months. I felt amazing, I got within 9 lbs of my goal weight by 12 months out. I was training for a 10K... then a lot of major life changes, as well. I'm a single mom. Have been for 11 years, so that part wasn't new, but I had my heart broken again in early 2017 (devastated, really), 2 changes of job/career in less than 10 months following that, problems with my teenagers, and a pretty major depression brought on by another heartbreak that I fought for the better part of 6 months recently. I turned to alcohol to numb myself since I couldn't turn to food and, as you can imagine, that did not go well for me. Tons of empty liquid calories and no motivation to exercise or eat right... when I did eat, it was small portions but I was losing the battle to get enough protein and water. I don't list this as excuses, because I know I need to own my poor choices. And I want to start over. I initially lost over 115 lbs and maintained in that range for nearly a year before it fell apart. I've gained back about 85 now. I have been beating myself over it and hoping that its not too late to turn the ship around. I still have the tools... Thank you for letting me know its not out of my reach. I'm trying to get back to basics this week with protein and water... and also am 1 day alcohol free (which doesn't sound like much yet, but I'm motivated to keep going)
  10. Just curious if there are any active Weight Loss Challenges going on in the forums right now (ex: "Fall Challenge" etc) I've tried searching for about a half hour now and not having a lot of success. I was sleeved 10/5/15 and last week was my 3rd "surgiversary" I've been struggling over the past 18 months (depression, alcohol, etc) and gained a BUNCH. I'm out of that fog now and recovering, and now I'm trying desperately to get back on track with my weight, too. I could really really use the motivation and accountability those challenges offer, so I'm hoping someone can link me to something. Thanks! Chrys Pre-surgery weight = 254 Low weight (December 2016) = 138 Current weight = 223 (told you it was baaaaaad ) Please wish me luck. Going back to basics and scared I may have ruined everything.
  11. Hello! Just checking in to report, I've not done any IF, nor made a sigle wise choice as of late. Weighed in this morning, up 5 lbs since my new low last weekend, but not surprising considering, terrible food choices, alcohol, not anywhere near my fluid goals (even including alcohol!?), lots of sodium, etc., etc. This sums up the last week This week won't be much better. Headed to a trade show right now, with every bad, crappy, but delicious food you could ever imagine, and then entertaining in the evening ... FML Glad to see IF working for those on here though
  12. Thats what I hear its the gold standard. Just want to clarify I take medication and daily vitamins so it won't be hard for me to continue vitamins. My kids are now 3 years old and all they want to eat are all the bad foods including mac and cheese ,cookies, hotdogs, so I'd actually would love to have some kind of dumping so I could stay away from those foods. I don't drink alcohol I don't even drink soda I drink seltzers, water and coffee but I eat my kids food. My blood pressure has been out of control and Im nervous going down the wrong path thats why I'm taking care of it now. I have read some sleeve people, the ones who didn't stick to the diet, and GERD needed revision to bypass so in my mind let me tackle the most effective in my lifestyle and mind. I don't want to mess around with my health. Thank you all for being there to guide us support each other. I whole heartedly appreciate it.

    Quesiton about long term weight

yes, your appetite will be non-existent during the initial rapid weight loss phase. then, as you get to your goal weight, you will notice that you will experience normal hunger sensations again and can comfortably eat more food. this worries a lot of people because they think they are "stretching their pouch" (not a thing) and are on the road to regain. but that is not the case. rather, your body is saying "okay, i'm at the weight i should be at now, lets eat some more food so i don't waste away to nothing!" in short, as long as you eat healthy whole foods a good 90% of the time, you can let your new appetite be your guide. if your body is hungry, feed it healthy food until you are satisfied. no need to count calories or portion sizes. if you have no appetite/hunger, don't eat! it's pretty simple. the danger is if you go back to sugary/processed food. don't do that. fast food, junk food, processed food, alcohol, sweets... all of that should be part of your past. those foods distort your body's natural hunger signals (insulin rollercoaster, food reward balance) and you can very well gain weight in the long-term by doing so.

    January 2018 Sleevers HERE

Been a while since I have posted. Still really glad I had the surgery and even trying to get my sister to consider. I am down 155 lbs. walk a lot and do a little weightlifting. Hit a plateau where I am only losing a pound here or there. Have kept pretty good eating habits but drinking alcohol definitely probably has something to do with the slowdown. Anyone else heard if u are supposed to keep losing over 18 months? Very happy with where I am but would be awesome to hit under 200, so I am keeping up the challenge. Still haven’t eaten many breads other than an occasional low carb wrap. Finding healthy food on the go has been my biggest challenge. Eat out at a lot more restaurants that have fish or seafood than the fast food joints I used to rely on. Hope everyone is having success.
  15. not everyone dumps. I never have - and most people I know who've had bypass don't. I don't know what the statistics on this are. I see 30% thrown around on here and on other boards sometimes, but I don't know if there's any hard core research behind that. It can be prevented, though, by limiting your sugar intake (many dumpers can eat *some* sugar - just not a lot of it) Artificial sweeteners don't cause dumping that I'm aware of, but some people are really sensitive to them (especially sugar alcohols - the ones whose names end in -itol). GI distress, diarrhea, etc - but this can happen to anyone, bypass or not.

    Less Headaches - you too?

It's more likely it's due to being properly hydrated now. Although cutting sugars, alcohols and caffeine will help out to some extent (depending on the research you are looking at) as well, but I feel the majority of it is due to folks actually paying attention to and consuming the proper amounts of water.

    Less Headaches - you too?

Hi All! I've found some studies that suggest that some weight loss surgery patients are more prone to migraines post-op, however at almost 15 weeks post-op myself I'm finding the opposite and have not had a single headache. I wonder if it's because I've cut sugar, alcohol and caffeine from my diet? Curious if anyone else is experiencing this amazing benefit?

    Dumping Syndrome 2+ years Postop

What did the last 2 days of eating look like for you? Total cals/carbs/sugars per meal or eating event as well as a daily total. Also, how long do you go between meals. Meals=anything containing calories or sugar alcohols--even Crystal Light could potentially be a problem as can protein shakes and bars. You will find the answer within your last 1-2days of meals.

    Emotional Eating

Your doctor wont think that. Most people that are overweight use food just like an alcoholic uses alcohol. They know that this is as much psychological as it is physical. If an alcoholic falls off the wagon, they just get back on. The same applies to you and your journey. If you don't have a structured diet plan, I can share mine. It's worked pretty well for me being pre-op. You need to track your food. Baritastic is my favorite free app for that. Good luck, you got this!
  20. My sleeve was June 13th and I've had no real issues or problems, thankfully. But since Sunday morning I am struggling with getting my fluids in much worse than ever since my procedure. Every time I swallow it feels really weird in my throat like I've gulped a HUGE amount when I haven't and food made me nauseated when I would start eating. The nausea is better, but any swallowing (even little chunks of greek yogurt popsicle) is followed by that weird golf ball feeling in my throat/chest. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? Hot vs. cold beverages feel the same. About the only food that doesn't feel awful is scrambled eggs. This all began Sunday morning and Saturday night I ate grapes for the first time at a party. I also drank some alcohol. Just trying to put it all out there to help figure out what this could be caused by... Can a stricture happen at this point? Could I have gotten a grape stuck in my sleeve? Starting to worry!

With all due respect, you are making a judgement. "We all know people who go a little extreme with both diet and exercise and I don't want that to be me." That's YOUR opinion. But what if they are perfectly satisfied and living a happy balanced life TO THEM? Just because it would make your life uncomfortable does not mean your way is the right way and their way is wrong. There are many paths to the same truth. "We all have a friend or coworker that doesn't stop talking about every meal or their gym routine..." Really? I think that also sounds like a judgement and maybe you are sensitive to that so it registers with you. "Worrying about every calorie or obsessing about every workout isn't really healthy in the long run." Of course it isn't. But again, that's your perspective. ARE they truly worrying about every last morsel? Maybe they track things more detailed than you. Maybe they meal plan. But obsessing? How are you qualified to make that mental health assessment. I think you are judging. Just because you are different doesn't make you right and them wrong. And this is what I object to about the left turn this thread went in. I'm so absolutely tired of people not just living and letting people live. I'm so sick of being hammered and shamed if my way is different. In RL and online. What makes you and authority? What makes Summerset? And even more...how does anyone who lacked the basic skills in understanding dietary moderation PRE-surgery, just "magically" wake up the next day after surgery and suddenly develop those abilities inately for the rest of their lives? LOL. I call BS and shenanigans. Why? Cuz stomachs heal and restriction loosens. You can eat more. You can eat bad foods. You start groovin on living life and you add back alcohol. And it's a recipe for "magic moderation regain." On this board right now, there are 2 such posts about the subject. Over the last 18months I've seen 100s of these threads. I'm gonna place my bet on @skinnylife @BigViffer @Biddy zz and @Diana in Philly those types of people with focus and plans that they will continue to live excellent, rewarding lives of health, happiness and normal weight.

    Sugar free candy

I personally have no issues with the sugar alcohol in popsicles, but when its in chocolate not a good comboe. Like everyone posted above just watch out for sugar alcohols, we all react differently, my wife does not do well with more than a piece or two. I might recommend trying new products at home just in case.
  23. For me, no IF nor did I eat very wisely yesterday. Oh well, I had a good few days proceeding it. Starting a week that is going to be all wineing and dining, including breakfast meetings. So no IF, more cals, non-ideal eating, and alcohol for this week ahead. We'll see what the scale has to say about it when I return

  25. I have not had a drop to drink since pre-surgery, however with the holidays approaching, I might want a small drink here or there, socially. I plan on avoiding anything carbonated (no beer or coolers). I know I need to keep sugars down, too. Any recommendations?
