    October 2022 surgery support

hi! I'm brand new here. I'm having RNY 10/31, so I made it into this group by a few hours!!! LOL I'm happy to have found you all. I started my weight loss back in April, and I've lost 37 lbs. I start my liquid pre-op diet on 10/17. I am so excited and so so so ready.
  2. Hey guys, First post here. I feel like such a failure. I had the sleeve back in 2019. Got pregnant, then needed back surgery all before I hit the year mark. Let's just say I gained most of my weight back. I'm thinking about a revision because I'm having issues with gerd and my hernia. I went to a support meeting last night and the instructor suggested I try and go on pre surgery liquid diet again and see if I get the restriction back. Can anyone refresh my memory on what that looks like besides protien drinks?
  3. I'm so upset. In the last 9 days I've gained 9 pounds!!! Nothing has changed with my diet and workouts. I take my vitamins like I'm supposed to. I never cheat on my diet, I work out 5 days a week. So I called my dietician and after we went over everything she said "remember when I told you that having pcos would cause you problems with weight loss? Well here it is. If you remember, you lost 100 pounds on keto and then the weight just started coming back no matter what you did? It looks like it's happening again." I literally started to cry, because nothing I did stopped the weight from coming back. I asked if I could do a pouch reset and maybe reverse it now and she said "you certainly can try, but you aren't gaining because of over eating or cheating on your diet. You're gaining because of a hormonal imbalance that seems to like you being fat". I don't know what to do. I had such high hopes that the surgery and weight loss would help improve the pcos, but it looks like, once again, it's out to sabotage me. I guess it's not enough that it caused me to have 10 miscarriages through the years, or need fertility meds to have my daughter, or never be able to get pregnant again after her. Now it won't let me lose weight and keep it off. I feel so defeated. All my hard work and once again, it's all for nothing.
  4. Always remember, we all lose at our own rate. Some are slow losers while others lose more quickly. There’s no right or wrong rate of loss. Sure there are generalisations & averages but you should never use them to judge if you’re failing. It really is impossible to compare your loss in pounds or inches to anyone else. So many factors influence your loss. Body shape, skeletal frame, age, genetics, starting weight, where you carried your weight, general health, genetics, etc. As you lose more weight you’ll notice you’ll drop sizes more quickly. Sizes tend to differ by 2 inches. It takes a loss of more pounds to lose 2 inches around your body when you’re bigger than when you’re smaller. That lose ‘10lbs & drop a dress size’ only applies to people who are pretty much in a healthy body weight range to begin. Took me a good 10/15kg (30lbs) to drop a dress size & a bit when I first started losing. How much exercise you do is really personal. Yes, there are lots of benefits but, for most, exercise only contributes to about 10% of the weight you have to lose. Have 100lbs to lose, exercise will burn 10lbs. I didn’t really exercise at all & I lost all my weight & more. All I do now is some stretching, & use resistance bands. I wouldn’t burn 40 calories. Ha! But that’s me. You’ll get there but in your time.
  5. Oh gosh I think it's human nature to compare ourselves to others in a similar boat! I do all the time, for good or bad. OP - 4.5 months after surgery I had lost 43lbs. I've gone on to lose 115 at just over 10 months so I think you're bang on target to reach goal. I wish you all the best on your journey. I have also noticed that weight loss and changes in clothing size are absolutely not linear - there are times when I have lost lots and not gone down a size like *forever*, and vice versa.

Ah I was hoping you would check in @ForMyOhana 134lbs off is just amazing in 10 months - that's a stone a month (I know I'm fixated on Irish measures, but I'm Irish!) Absolutely everything crossed for you hitting that 259 mark before your surgery-versary!!

    MS and surgery?

I have MS and had the band 10 years ago. Now I’m back, and going to get Gastric Bypass. My MS was a non issue.

    September surgery buddies!!

Hey there. In those early days the bottle of water seemed way too overwhelming. I had these one ounce cup that I would pour into. I’d pour basically like 8-10. And then take them as “shots” (very slow shots). I’d do that so that I was taking 2 every 30 min. Before I knew it the whole bottle was nearly done.!

    September surgery buddies!!

Starting 2nd week after surgery. I am off my metformin and blood sugar levels are excellent. I do feel a bit week and had only one slight dizzy spell. Wounds are healing quite well. Tiny bit of bruising. Vitamins and Proteins are easy to consume and tracking everything with 'my fitness' app. I did find it not too much fun at the supermarket today. My old brain wanted buy things I know I will most likely never eat again. But I'm ok with that . I have found that Ido have a tendency to swallow air when I drink fluids and I'm working on slowing right down to a crawl with it. I tilt my head back a bit and swallow. Seems a bit weird but it works for me. I've had the gastric bypass Sept 19 . I started at 265.5 lbs 2 weeks before surgery and on the day of my surgery I was 250 lbs. I started to track my weight from then and have slowly lost 5.5 lbs in my first week. I do seem to have not lost anything for three days but I do see and feel my body structure changing. I have been mobile more the last few days and I am starting to track that also. Today I walked about 1km and will be adding more distance daily. Maybe will incorporate the treadmill in my buildings exercise room. I'm glad I found this group and look forward to reading and responding to people questions. I'm sure I will have some and I am happy to answer any I can for others. Thanks. Cheers from Toronto Canada. !!

  11. Actually maybe the correct question is - how did you know when you were done? I am within a couple of pounds of my original (completely arbitrarily chosen) goal weight. Which by the way I never really believed I could reach. I was sleeved 10 months ago and am still losing around half a pound a week on 1200 calories (ish) a day - a bit more at weekends because I drink some alcohol then. I am hungry at times but I can keep that at bay by eating lots of protein snacks alongside my 3 meals a day, which are protein and veg for the main - still not much in the way of carbs. My question is - did you just select a goal weight and stick to that? Did you achieve/maintain this by intentionally increasing your calorie intake once you got there? I'm thinking I could easily go up to 1600/1800 calories a day and probably maintain at that or thereabouts. Or did you just keep going as long as you could, staying on the right side of hunger (AKA deprivation, LOL) and see how low you could go, and does the weight loss then fizzle out? If I did that would I ever be able to up my calories again without gaining? So many questions, LOL. I would really appreciate your thoughts and experiences.

Hair is starting to thin a bit

One of the more irritating side effects of WLS! Mine started shedding really heavily around the 5th month and kept going for a couple of months (and I lost a lot in the end). I'm seeing some regrowth at 10 months. Totally agree, a shorter length looks better with thinner hair.
  13. I've been wondering when to stop mine! I'm 10 months post surgery and still take a multivitamin and calcium, and B12 spray. I have a sleeve and am eating a good balanced diet now. I think I'll ask my dietician if I can stop them at my 1 year check my my blood test results remain good.

6 weeks post op ZERO WEIGHT LOSS AND DEPRESSED

Stalls in the first few weeks, including week 1, are very common and to be expected. My doctor reassured me of that right away. I can tell you that from my plan and in office nutritionist, we were told do not eat or drink anything that has more than 5-10 g of sugar in a sitting. Maybe try swapping some of the carbs for protein, as the body will try to use the carbs in lieu of stored fat for fuel if it can. My program recommends eating your protein, if still hungry, eat good green veggies, and then after that if you really need something, go for a low sugar fruit.
  15. My surgiversary is 6/18/19. Three years out and I look and feel great! I weighed 280 pre-op and lost 140. My biggest complaint is gas. I was feeling terribly self conscious because I thought I lost too much weight. Took me awhile to get used to it.

6 weeks post op ZERO WEIGHT LOSS AND DEPRESSED

21 pounds in 5 weeks isn't zero... That is normal. Stalls in the first month are also super common, and I would say that the majority of us have had them. Normal weight loss with a sleeve is 10-12 pounds a month. you went beyond that. Having the colonic emptied your system, now you are adding back to it. The water that went in, did eventually come out, along with anything else that came out. Just be patient and stick to your program.

6 weeks post op ZERO WEIGHT LOSS AND DEPRESSED

You can eat way more than I could at 6 weeks out. I had a tough time of nausea and sickness. For months I only managed about 300 calories a day. Even now at 10 months out I can only manage 800 to 1000 Cals a day. This made me have slow weight loss because my body was holding on to everything, I managed to give it. So, let's see if we can find out what's going on with you Are you on regular foods now or still on pureed? We are all given different plans so we don't know what yours will be. Can you show a food diary for a typical day ? How is your protein intake ?

6 weeks post op ZERO WEIGHT LOSS AND DEPRESSED

Two pounds lost in five weeks? How is that normal? It’s making me feel like something is wrong. The other 19 was legit the first week and included whatever the weight of my stomach was that came out and water I was retaining. So what has changed since then? I went and did a colonic hydro cleanse and came home heavier than I went in too. ps. Thank you for your reply I do appreciate it ❤️
  19. This might be the most important sentence in your post OP. Do you eat fast food because you don't like to cook from scratch? Or is it lack of time and, if so, could you change that in the run up to surgery? Cooking from scratch takes no more (or not much more) time than ordering and picking up a fast food meal for all, and you can make/adjust all the twiddly bits on the side that make it good for every member of your family. I live with 3 fussy eaters and I work really long hours and yet we can sit down to a meal every evening that has been made from fresh things. That's not to blow my own trumpet - I'm really lazy, LOL. I just have a stock of dinners that I can do quickly and that I can add veg, carbs, protein etc. to as we need it. Now that I'm 10 months post sleeve I just eat smaller quantities and in a different order than the rest of the family. I will eat a ragu but no pasta (family eats all); fish pie without the potato topping; roast chicken/beef/pork/lamb dinner but just meat and a little veg; even bruschetta without the bread; curry no rice, LOL. Etc.!!! Oh and soup is your friend - you do it with bread for your family, none for you. Honestly it's not hard after you get used to it. I wish you the best for your journey.
  20. Iv'e had BOTh the ruen-y bypass surgery that was successful FOR over 10 years, after having a baby, gaining weight back and having vitamin deficiency issues I had a revision to a gastric sleeve. The sleeve has been a joke, there is no stopping me from over eating sweets or fried foods, I was sick when I ate those things with a ruen-y. I had an upper gi last week (I am 7 years post op of revision) Dr says my stomach looks like any other non surgery stomach he sees. So much for my surgery dr saying stomachs dont stretch. 1.Ruen-y is more evasive but it keeps you from eating sweets/fried foods without becoming so ill you have to lay down for 2 hours. (not dangerous, just very uncomfortable) 2.If you have weight loss surgery be SURE to have lipo suction after you've lost most of y our weight. Once you grow a fat cell you NEVER loose it unless you have it removed by having lipo suction or cool sculpting. A fat cell will lay flattened until you have extra calories that need stored then they pop right up. Get rid of them b&&*$ right away, you can still grow more cells if you over eat but it takes time to grow them new, old cells are like little saboteurs waiting to fill up again. 3. If you don't like aerobic activity try chill-aerobics. Sit somewhere cold.. shiver and ur body burns fat. 15 min. of shivering equals 30min,. of aerobic activity. Your body will burn fat to try and warm you up. (it's actually opposite in a polar bears body)
  21. Hello, I’m 10 days post op. My question is about the cost of the surgery. Are there any self-pay patients out there? I began this process in January of this year. Started with my local hospital and was given a quote of $35,000 which is due to the pre-op requirements such as psych eval, endoscopy, sleep study, etc. I then reached out to a bariatric center about 5 hours away and they quoted me $25,000 and didn’t require the same pre-op items. I went with this program because the doctor has been doing bariatric surgeries for over 25 years. I prepaid the surgeon $4400 and the hospital said I needed to prepay $19,100. A week after getting home, I am now getting billed an additional $31,000. More than double my quote. They told me those quotes are only estimates and that the cost of the surgery can vary greatly based on complications. The thing is, I had no complications and even was released a day early. They are sending it to the higher ups for them to “review”. This whole thing has been stressful and affecting my recovery. I wouldn’t have had the surgery if I knew it was going to cost me over $54,000 because I wouldn’t have been able to afford it. Just looking for some prices to compare to. I’m in Oregon Thanks!

Pain at 3 weeks post op

I’m at 10 days post op and still have some pain. Tonight was the first night I was able to sleep on my side but it could have been because I took a couple Tylenol before bed because I was on my feet too much today helping my daughter. I think I would be surprised if I still had pain 3 month out.

    October 2022 surgery support

I had some issues long time ago, where i needed to take iron supplement for a month, but never this bad and not in last 10 years.
  24. I also am waiting for a decision. I first had a lap band, which damaged my esophagus a little and I also had a hiatal hernia repaired then. I had a revision to a sleeve in 2014 because of my problems with the band. Now I have severe Gerd, just crazy bad. I had reflux before my first surgery due to my hernia. My hiatal hernia has returned and I also have an abdominal hernia. So now I need a bypass for the Gerd although during Covid I gained over 50 lbs. in 2019 I was at 157lbs now I am at 230. good luck
  25. I had my pre op appointment with the surgeon, surgery is Oct 4th so less than 2 weeks away he said he wants me off of them and to take 1 mg less a week... im on 4mg... there is 1 week and 4 days... at most I'll be down to 2mg according to his plan I tried to tell him that about 10 times but he didn't listen. My pain management dr who prescribes them to me said to stay on them, his exacts words were... I would recommend that you continue taking the Suboxone "through" surgery (not stopping it) and then if additional pain control is needed after (which it will be) the team can add some short-acting medications on top. If the surgery team would like to discuss that with me, no problem. I've messaged him a few times to ask him to talk to him but hes not responding, called asked for his nurse she wasnt there so the receptionist took a very detailed message about my siruation and how urgent it is and they said to expect a call today and no call. I don't want to stop taking it if I'm not supposed to but the surgeon was really against the use of it to treat pain but when my oxys and percs constantly needed to be increased to work I said no more and went on a search for a pain management dr willing to prescribe suboxone off label as pain meds. This dr actually does confrences promoting it being a safer alternative for those people like myself who seldom feel like I need something stronger. Recently I've felt like I've needed more after a car accident hopefully that heals because I'd like to keep taking the subs even tho they have ruined my teeth in the 10 years I've been on them. I pray my dr comes through on this and speaks with the surgeon because stopping it and feeling sick for a few days before and then again a few days after just sounds miserable to me, that's one less thing to add to my anxiety that hopefully won't have to be. He's only in the office Mondays you bet you butt I'm calling when they open and again every few hours if he doesn't call or message me back.
