  1. How low is low? How tall are you & what’s your BMI? I was 200lbs but at only 5’3 my BMI was 35. I lost all my weight and more. Got to my goal in 6 months & lost another 11+kgs over the next 11 months or so. I maintained at about 49kgs for a year. I put on 2kgs in a month because of a necessary dietary change & a change of a med & have been sitting at about that 51kg for almost 10 months There have been posters here who started with BMIs of less than 35 & had the surgery because of existing health issues & they were able to lose weight. The main difference between people with higher starting weights & those with lower is that those at a higher weigh lose more quickly at first. But their rate of loss slow as they lose weight just like everyone else. Recovery is an individual thing - just how your body reacts to the surgery & heals. Nothing really to do with your weight as such but existing health factors may influence your recovery. Some people who carry a lot of weight in their abdominal area sometimes struggle with more discomfort when getting up & down & generally moving as the weight around their tummy pulls at the internal & external surgical sites. A binder is often helpful as it supports the tummy & abdominal muscles.
  2. My experience, and mine alone. I had the lapband in 2008. Had it for 7 it 8 years. No WLS restriction is more miserable compared to what I had experienced with the lapband. The pain in my chest, the having to void in a public restroom because the pressure in my throat. When I had the lapband restriction, it was THE most unnatural feeling. With the RNY, you will live a much smoother and normal life. As long I chew well, I literally have zero side effects from the RNY. It has been over a year. Hard to explain, but for once, I feel so normal now. To me, when I get full, it's very similar to getting full before any WLS. You just have to learn your body's clues. If one doesn't want to dump, you stay away from those foods. One stays away from foods when they are allergic to them. Most do not dump anyway. As far as safety. This may help you out. RNY is not the same surgery as it was many years ago. It is laparoscopic, so much safer, so much so that many surgeons now do the RNY even as an outpatient procedure now. I was released within 24 hours. https://www.pennmedicine.org/updates/blogs/metabolic-and-bariatric-surgery-blog/2019/may/is-bariatric-surgery-safe
  3. Hi. I’m new here and I’ve been reading several posts. I’m getting the gastric bypass on 19 October 2022, following removal of the gastric lap band. I am terrified and now I am thinking about cancelling the operation altogether. I am terrified of how things will be to travel and eating, catching up with friends for dinner and a glass of wine and don’t get me started on what I’ve been reading about dumping syndrome! I’m not going into this very lightly and have given it quite a bit of thought but now that the surgery day is almost here (currently doing the pre-op diet) I’m starting to really freak out! I’m from the Australia, Sydney so any help will be greatly appreciated thank you
  4. If I didn't have a history of all other weigh loss medications failing I would be convinced not to get the surgery. But I am too far along in the process (surgery on 10/11/22) to stop now. It is the best weight loss medication I've ever experienced. I've recommended to everyone who isn't ready for surgery and I will take it again with a heartbeat LOL.
  5. I am 5’4” and was 200 lbs. when I got my sleeve in 2020. I got down to 146 and have pretty much maintained that weight for a year. I would love to lose another 10 lbs but, I confess, I don’t exercise quite as much as I could, and the nutritionist suggested light weight training, Someday…..
  6. I had my surgery (bypass) back in 2019, I got down to 175 stone. I started sertraline 7 months ago now, and have gained nearly 20 lbs. Albeit my diet hasn't been the greatest, but I feel horrific and starting to hate the way my body looks again. Any tips for getting back on track? I snack/graze too much but don't feel strong enough to go back to old/good habits!! Any tips for diets to try/how to lose weight again
  7. Thank you all so much for advice and your input, I do follow a low carb diet due to insulin resistance with PCOS. I think that unfortunately I may be kinda stuck here, I’ll keep following the plan and hope and pray for some movement in the right direction but I think for my mental health it’s not helping to beat myself up every week that the scale has stopped moving.. cause it hasn’t moved in 5 months…. I’m happier now at my 220lbs than I was at the 289 lbs before surgery so I think to give myself a little mental break I need to figure out how to be more positive about the small success I have had over the last 10 months. Focusing on the “not good enough” mindset has really triggered my depression and sense of self hate again and I definitely don’t want to get back to that where I need medications to get out of bed daily because those depression meds made me gain a ton. Gotta try and find some positivity somewhere right? Thanks!
  8. Hi all. So I am getting very close to getting my pre-op appointment scheduled and then a surgery date, but problem is I am going on a vacation end of January '23 and it will be to theme parks. I am figuring I will be only 10-13 weeks out from my surgery and I am concerned that I will not be able to ride roller coasters. They really whip you around and can feel it in the tummy so I am concerned about a leak. Has anyone gone to a theme park after surgery or had your dr tell you how long to avoid an activity like that after surgery? I will definitely be speaking with the surgeon about this, but since that is a few weeks away, I figured I 'd see if anyone on here has had any experience with this. Thanks!
  9. Mine was pretty quick. I guess submittal goes in depending on insurance (at my clinic). I got my date, but did not get the approval until I had my final surgical date (2 weeks before surgery). They told me that sometimes the insurance doesn't send confirmation until 7 days before. I received my confirmation about 10 days out.

I did talk to my friend and sister who both work with this hospital and they game me the name of the administrator of doctors for this hospital, i actually know him that's how small of a town. Just didnt know that was his job lol... so I'm going to talk to him tomorrow about the ER doctor, I guess I'm not even in the top 10 of people to have an issue with him in the last 2 months alone. And alot of people are hoping to get his contract here cut short because he doesn't seem to help people unless he believes the person needs help Sent from my SM-G996U using BariatricPal mobile app

  13. Hi. I know that we all had our different reasons for having WLS. I did it because I was fed up with yo-yo dieting. I was on-off Keto diet for over two years. I've lost some weight and gained it all back in the end. The longest I've stayed on diet was 5 months and that paid off really well (lost 25 kg). But then Covid-19 hit. I was about to go back to Keto diet in January 22 when my sister called to tell me she was going for the mini gastric bypass. That was the first time time I've heard of it. Fast forward three weeks and I'm on the plane flying to Egypt to have mine. My "breaking point" was finally going back to work in the office and having to remove the arm rests of my office chair because it somehow "shrunk" and was squeezing my thighs. How about you? What made you decide to have the surgery and what was the breaking point?

I want to add that I'm sorry if I came off as ungrateful that I was able to have the surgery, I am grateful and i am planning on working my program. I was very emotional and upset when I was typing out what happened. I think I'm more upset that I didn't stay in a different town for my recovery.... and I'm hoping to never have to go to this hospital again if I can help it... The doctor just make me feel like me feeling dizzy, not being able to drink much, and not going to the bathroom in over 10 hours (probably tmi I'm sorry) was all my fault and I deserved it and had no right going to the hospital for help..... I have another surgery I'm supposed to have done in 8 months (for my back) and u will definitely hold off until I'm able to save enough to stay in a different town for recovery. There are lots of exercises you can do seated which wouldn’t impact the healing of your ankle. Google is your friend. Resistance bands are really useful too. Sure won’t stretch you from a cardiac perspective but will work your upper body muscles. And yes, exercise only contributes to about 10% of any weight loss you have to lose. Have 50lbs to lose then exercise will be responsible for about 5lbs. Unless you start running marathons! If your calorie consumption is less than your body needs to function, you will lose weight even if it is a little slower with your reduced activity. Maybe check in with your dietician to ensure you’re on the right path. Sometimes a small tweak can be helpful. Am a little surprised you’re being advised to still be getting protein from shakes instead of real food alone this far along even if you have weight you still wants to lose.. I didn’t have another shake once I began purées. My calories were still low & I got my protein in. Even now I get in 70g of protein & consume about 1300/1400 calories a day in maintenance. Oh & I didn’t really exercise while I was losing & apart from some stretching exercises I still don’t. Wouldn’t burn 40 calories a day. Hope your ankle heals quickly & you’re up & moving easily soon.
  16. I looked around and I didn’t find an official thread for October GP surgeries. Anyway I’m scheduled for 10/5/2022 ~ Wednesday. I go for my Covid test tomorrow morning. I’m not going to lie…I’m anxious but excited. Who else is having surgery this month? Anyone on the 5th?

I'm scheduled for RNY on 10/25! My preop appointment got moved from 10/11 to 10/19. I'm supposed to start my liquid diet on 10/21, but I'm going to call Monday and see if they want me to start it sooner because my BMI is so high.

    Slowing down?

pretty much, my weight loss slowed at the at the 6 month mark then at the 10 month mark I dropped 2 kg then it stopped. my lowest weight was 1 week off my 1 year mark but I have since put on 2 kg
  19. This is so distressing for you. I have no good answers, but I do know of the same problem. I had my VSG in 2018, so am over 4 years post surgery. I have lost 85 pounds, about 10 pounds from my goal. But I am happy enough with my progress. Yet a colleague of mine had the same procedure, same surgeon, and yet has not only lost nothing, but gained 29 pounds! We compared our pre diets. Mine was healthy, lots of fruit, vegetables, protein, carbs etc. I didn't eat desserts, not a fan of chocolate or sugar... my problem was portion size. It was way too big. I think I got used to serving a husband and 2 hungry sons! So the VSG was perfect for me because it limited my portion sizes of my pretty healthy diet. In addition, I did, and still do, suffer from dumping syndrome (unusual in VSG) so it discourages me from eating excess sugar or carbs. On the other hand, my colleague was addicted to everything sweet and chocolate plus carbs. She snacked constantly, nibbled on chocolate all day long, and although her stomach size was small like mine, she was dripfeeding it all day long. Have a really good look at your diet and what you are eating. Stick to the protein and veg. Honestly, I can't eat more than a palm size portion of beef or chicken. It can take me an hour to eat that plus a palm size portion of veggies. I can only eat half a banana or half an apple. I am just so full!
  20. I had VSG on 1/18/2022 SW 281 LW 219 CW 224 I am feeling so defeated, I feel like by now I should have lost more… I eat right, workout 3-4 days a week, I work full time as an RN in a busy emergency department 3-4 nights a week so my job is pretty active as well… I’m just pretty lost on why I’m such a slow loser. I haven’t lost anything since May, actually gained 5 lbs. I have met with my doctor and they referred me to a nutritionist which said to track everything and told me food wise I’m doing what I need to be doing and really didn’t offer much more advice. I do have PCOS and that’s always been a struggle with my weight but I have seen so many have success with PCOS post op as well. Has anyone hit a wall like this and has been able to get over it without having additional surgeries like bypass? Thanks in advance for any advice!
  21. I use Ensure 30 g of protein twice a day and I also have a protein shake I was sleeved 9/19/22. I've had it pretty easy minimum pain. But I do get hungry a lot. I try to drink a lot of water to help with the hunger. Monday is my last day of liquids. I start on purees! That's the next step soft foods! Just take it day by day!

    Goal!

I hit goal today, 10 months and 2 weeks after my sleeve. I feel very lucky. Best wishes and good luck to all of you - I could never have done this without you.

Heyo! I am October 3rd! I have been on my pre op diet since the 19th. I have lost about 10 pounds since starting the pre op. I did really good up until yesterday when I messed up and ate 2 scalloped potatoes. I am having a bit of anxiety over it. Thoughts like “what if my liver doesn’t shrink now?” “What if the cancel me?” The nerves are getting more intense every day. I’ve been in this process for over a year so I think it’s hard for me to realize it’s actually happening!

Guys who started over 400 lbs.

New here, Hi. I'm currently sitting at 450, though I've been up to 480. Just had my first consultation yesterday. Trying to get a sleeve done before the end of the year. I have met my deductible with a hospital stay and my out of pocket is 0 right now. I have tried to get this done 4 times over the last 10 years and something always happens with insurance or other factors. I've been reading and lurking for a bit and decided I would finally say hi.
