  1. Definitely don't freak out. Some people actually show a weight gain the first week because of the gas and fluids from the surgery. It's basically too early to know much of anything in terms of what to expect. For what it's worth, my surgeon told me not to pay any attention to my weight/loss, just focus on getting enough protein and water and taking my vitamins and doing exercise (my knees are pretty bad, so I don't do much in the way of exercise). Of course I weigh myself and keep track of my loss, but please be aware that this is a long haul--there will be (frustrating) stalls along the way, when you won't lose despite the fact that you are eating what seem to be very tiny calorie counts. Don't worry about the stalls, either--your body will catch up and you'll start showing losses again. Hang in there. So far, you're doing great!

4.5 Months – Eating Too Much?

The dreaded stretched sleeve debate..lol I'm going to copy my response and keep posting it. What you are describing is normal for the sleeve. It's not "stretched" this is the progression out from surgery. The restriction is still there. After surgery your restriction is tight. The restriction will change. Surgery few oz Might get 600+ calories first few months 4 oz five months to a year 6 oz to 8 oz 1200+ calories One year out half a plate. five to ten years a full plate "Grazing" is usually the cause of weight gain. You have a new point of volume and sensation of full. If you eat high calories throughout each day . (calories can be combination of good and bad food choices) It's the same effect as if you didn't have surgery. An excess of 500 calories will cause you to gain weight. A tip that may help: Try eating every 2 to 3 hours. Protein first and eat vegetables until the point of full. The bulk and fiber of the veggies will help with hunger. I can eat 5 to 6 oz of protein with a cup and a half of chopped salad. takes a while to eat but, it keeps my weight down and I feel full. Medical professional explanation to back this up below: Dr. Matthew Weiner Published on Mar 16, 2015 "Stomach Stretching" is the term used by many weight loss (Bariatric) surgery patients to explain the changes in their appetite and food consumption after surgery. Dr. Weiner explains what's really happening and how to prevent it.
  3. Immediately after the surgery I was curious about my weight I went I to surgery weighing 198 lbs. After surgery I weighed 230 [emoji21]🤤[emoji24] why???? I know I'm swollen everywhere but why is the question Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app
  4. that isn't real weight gain, likely water retention. anyone who starts exercising should expect water weight gain out of the gate. never met anyone who didn't have it.

    Nerves and a weight gain?

@melsabells Yes, you will do wonderfully. Your doubts prove you’re human. I felt pretty secure about everything. Some anxiety the night before and during initial admitting at the hospital. Even then, I looked at my husband right before admitting, I rhetorically asked, “I really need this, right? I can’t lose weight any other way?” He said, “you need this.” I felt better after that. I struggle with generalized anxiety. You are going to live moment-to-moment through this process. There’s no doubt in my mind that you will get through this just fine. And, about the 1 lb. weight gain, don’t sweat it. Weight can shift 1or 2 lbs. and not actually be true weight gain. Sending love & light your way...☀️
  6. I’ve had a curious day. I forgot to weigh in first thing this morning. So I weighed just a few mins ago. It says I weigh 327. That is after my shake and coffee. I know, logically, that this doesn’t mean I’ve necessarily gained weight but it’s messing with my head. Also, my blood sugars are not so good today but I cut down on my long acting insulin to see if it’d help with the lows. LOL. It did! Not to worried about that right now. Nerves are coming into play. It’s not a freak out nerves but I am having a bout of the doubts. I know I’m going to do this but some things are worrying me. My mom is sick and she’s my support system. I’ll likely be alone more than not in the hospital. I have pretty severe social and general anxiety. So that’s a big worry. No matter what I’ll be alone overnight due to our critters needing one of us home. I’m writing this down to let it go. I’ll do wonderfully!

    Regain while traveling for work

Work travel was (and is) really difficult because you’re eating out 3 meals a day and there’s always the damned hotel all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet, plus I used to take it as a personal challenge to use my entire meal allowance. On previous and long business trips, I used to avoid major weight gain by going to the hotel gym every morning and getting a parking space that involved a long walk to the office. Fortunately all of my business travel is to my employer’s field offices, and they all sell high-protein, low-carb snacks such as cheese and pepperoni or hard-boiled eggs.

End of Weight Loss? What Now?

Maintaining is still work. Eat healthy and have times you indulge. when you see a weight gain, get back to eating healthy put some extra time in your workout to get your weight back down. Weight gain can happen to any of us. Be aware of old habits and grazing (eating many high calorie meals over and over throughout the day)
  9. I am so depressed with my weight gain and I've been going to the gym for small group training and Barre class. So I'm a toned fat person lol Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using BariatricPal mobile app
  10. I've been up front with my kids from the beginning of this journey, but then I've always been honest about my medical stuff with them (partly because they needed to know what to do if I had a sugar low or something). I need them to understand that I'm doing this to take care of myself, to better my health and outlook on life, and so that I can be around when they grow up, graduate, get married, etc. I get the feelings of shame... on my bad days I feel that a bit too. Weight gain is a huge miasma of contributing factors... not just eating junk and sitting on the couch. Weight loss is hard, and the reality is proven in the numbers. They say only 5% of folks who lose a significant/large amount of weight will actually be able to keep it off long term without surgery. You have made a hugely beneficial decision for you, for your family, for your future. I think that's something to be proud of. You have made incredible strides in getting to this point, and it will still be hard work after the surgery. You need your family to have a good understanding of what you're in for and to be your support system. Hang in there!

    weight gain

I have been at the same weight for more than a month now. I have had sinus issues, on meds for that and I am sure they cause weight gain. I am off the meds now and the sinuses are mostly clear so I am hopeful I can start losing again. It can be a slow process, I have learned patience through all this.

    weight gain

It would be nice if you would have posted more than just "Weight Gain in 3 Days". That doesn't mean much to anyone. Are you pre-op or Post-op? what was your weight when you started, what is it now. What diet are you on?

I do not understand 'no restriction left"

My restriction is still there and working after 4 years. Statistics I've seen say revisions are rare. I have compassion for anyone who has had a large weight gain or complications. The sleeve stretching scenario leaves me baffled. Are the mental health evaluations identifying eating disorders pre surgery? Are surgeons offices/medical community intervening if someone is binge eating past capacity repeatedly?(stretching their sleeve) Do people confuse stretching their sleeve with grazing? It's not that the sleeve has stretched. Grazing is not eating past the feeling of restriction. Grazing: Consuming poor food choices and/or excessive calories in many meals over, over and over throughout the day. The amount of calories would be as if you never had surgery. The weight would come right back. any thoughts?

    Sleeved Twice??

Just an FYI when I first inquired to be resleeved I had an endoscopy done to find out what the problem was and my stomach was totally stretched. My doctor shared with me that when I first got the sleeve five years ago they weren’t taking chances and doing the sleeve as tight as they are doing them now and that’s one of the reasons why my stomach stretched and I was having a weight gain

Did you lose weight taking Lithium?

I was on Seroquel for several months. Lots of weight gain. However, I switched over to other meds way before WLS, so I can't answer as to how my life on Seroquel after WLS would be. I can say though, that I have lost over 150 pounds in 16 months, and I take bipolar meds.
  17. Hey MominCanada, welcome and thanks for sharing. I had an ESG in November last year in Houston. I checked out Dr. Marvin and was confident in him, you should have a good experience. Stalls, great question, we all have them and there is usually more than one in my experience. It's a large change that our bodies are going though and each body reacts differently, it's not a linear process. I had a stall for 10 days where I didn't lose any weight, gained 1 pound and then afterwards in 2-3 days lost 3 pounds. Difficult for me as an engineer to explain. Water consumption and keeping it high seems to have something to do with it, see several recent posts in ESG forum. A number of us have had stalls, gone back and increased our water intake back >60-80 ounces per day and continued to lose weight. I have a goal >> than 20% weight loss and am about half way there. I would encourage you to discuss your goals clearly with Dr. Marvin and ask his opinion with your specific body size/shape and goal is ESG the best way to go. I had this same discussion with my Dr. and concluded VSG or ESG would work (I did not want something temporary like balloons) and eventually chose ESG due to the simpler procedure and quicker recovery time. My diet is very similar to a ketosis diet (only smaller portions) and when I have my blood checked I am deep into ketosis. Typically eating 2 eggs in AM, 3 ounces of protein at lunch and dinner with 1/4 cup green vegetables and 1/4 cup brown rice or pasta. I will do a yogurt for snack in AM and sugar free chocolate pudding for snack in PM. Total 800-1000 calories/day. When I spoke with the dietician we agreed this was very similar to a keto diet. I have the same approach with sharing, other than my wife not talking about procedure with others. I have told them I'm working with a doctor on a very strict diet, with blood monitoring, etc. Diet is focused on on lean proteins and similar to keto approach. So far so good on that front. Keep the questions coming, we're here to help! Please keep sharing it can help so many others! Tex
  18. Question: - won't going off the steroids and going low carb reverse the weight gain, especially if you already do portion control? How long have you been at this high weight? What will you do for the back pain without the steroids?
  19. HELP! As a Naturopathic & Holistic Doctor, this APP has been informative and inspirational. In the past, I have been totally against invasive/gastric surgery. My Story: My PCP and Nutritionist informs me a month ago that I am in severe need of a gastric method; due to my personal medical conditions, such as: severe weight gain from 180 to 337, severe back problems with L5, S1, C2/3 neck, SI Joints, pre-diabetic, elevated cholesterol & severe hypertension. Interesting, I am an author and my motto have always been centered on "Living a Holistic and Healthier Lifestyle"! I often thought as a Military Brat, Military Officer, Holistic Doctor, Professor of Biology, Medicsl Terminology, Body Physics & Anatomy, not to mention, I facilitate holistic seminars, eat proper nutrition, eat on a saucer (I do not eat beef or pork, i am not an overeater) and i drink holistically! Really?? Me, yes! I often thought to myself, how did I fall in this category? I fell in this category because it can happen to ANYONE!!! Another reason, I was against these type of procedures are because I have personally assisted several patients/friends/relatives with failed gastric methods. Upon carefully reviewing each case; I noticed, the following: *Patient 1(Gastric Bypass): Patient had an unsuccessful surgery that was reversed and almost resulted in loss of life, due to poor surgeon & patient practices. *Patient 2 (Gastric Band): Patient was unsuccessful, due to a lack of proper eating and not ready to make a lifestyle change. This patient became very ill and suffered from band erosion several times and resulted in removal; due to over eating, dietary choices, did not follow dietiary plan and improper regime daily. In the above mentioned information, I have selected Gastrectomy Sleeve. For years, I followed a plan and excellent dietary choices. It appears that i have not loss much weight, however I did manage to lose 20 lbs. before i made this decision to purse my health further. I have stopped my practice, seminars, writing books, until i can improve my own life!! In leadership, I have always lead by example; so I started DrAshmonGetFit on FB social media to assist others. I know how to lose weight, my issue were the injections (steroids) that casused an extensive weight gain. I have stopped back injections because I could not lose weight; due to steroid injections, lack of mobility (in wheelchair 30% of the time) and exercise regiment. My PCP and Nutritonist have convinced me to proceed with surgery; due to my high BMI of 53, weight of 337 and other health issues listed above. Good news, on February 10th, I received a letter from surgeon. It states that I will report to main hospital on March 19th in DE for a meeting with Nutritionist and to watch a video; thereafter a conference is scheduled with surgeon and nurse on the same day for Q & A as well as to select the most appropriate procedure for my health conditions with surgeon. Therefore, I join this community for support because this process is not my specialty. In addition, I am willing to assist where my education and experience is needed! It is time to take my own life back!!
  20. We slip back into old habits because it's the easiest thing. It is very hard to retrain your brain to behave differently. Even after 9 months of doing well it is still easier to go backwards instead of forward. You've had major surgery and let someone cut out the most of your stomach. This issue is between you and the problems that caused weight gain in the first place. Be stronger than those problems. Or fail. That's the choice.

Did you lose weight taking Lithium?

That is great! It is good when you find something that really works for you. I imagine you will continue to do well on it. I had my sleeve 15 months ago and my bipolar meds really didn't seem to interfere with weight loss at all. Funny, because when I first started the bipolar meds about 10 years ago, the weight gain went way up!
  22. So i’m a week post-op and today i weighed myself and gained four pounds. I’ve been sticking to my liquids and required protein but have noticed bloating so could this be the cause? I’ve also been working out with some very VERY light moderate weight lifting. Was wondering if this is normal, either way i took the batteries out of my scale because i don’t want to get obsessed with my numbers or discouraged. On another note i’ve noticed my emotions have been all over the place since surgery. Sometimes I’ll get angry and today i’ve just been crying for no reason. Is this common after surgery? Or could it be the fact that I was very emotionally dependent on food so now I’m forced to let it out one way or another. Would a counselor or therapist be good to cope with Post surgery emotions?

    Emotional eating and food addiction

It's not always stress/emotional eating or addictions that make you obese. People gain weight when they eat more calories than they burn through activity. This imbalance is the greatest contributor to weight gain. Other factors: poor nutrition education/misinformation Your location : Lack of access to healthy food choices Genetics/family history medical conditions medications life style and habits lack of activity/mobility issues Aggressive food marketing and availability of poor quality food. Even if you don't have the food addiction or stress/emotional eating. You still have to make changes to whatever got you to the point of having surgery. https://www.cdc.gov/obesity/adult/causes.html https://www.nichd.nih.gov/health/topics/obesity/conditioninfo/cause

    Weight gain

I gained almost 20lbs during the 6 mo of insurance required weigh-ins. It wasn’t intentional but the weight gain took me from 38-40 BMI and insurance approved a sleeve.
