    Vegetarians?

Not vegetarian but the majority of my diet are fruits and vegetables (7 - 14 servings per day). My diet is 50% to 60% carbs. Beans and lentils are great from the beginning (i e. pureed stage and after), tofu as well (soft at first, then firm). I love Tofu and vegetable stir-fry dishes or soups. Anything soybean helps a lot with protein. There is always vegan protein powder too.

    Become a vegetarian maybe?

I know there are a few vegetarians lurking around these boards. I can't imagine how hard it would be to meet my Protein requirements without meat. But technically vegetarians can eat eggs... just saying. If you are talking about cutting out eggs, would you be going vegan? That would mean cutting out dairy as well.
  3. You can try to type in Vegetarian Bandsters, and there site might come up. Play around with the wording, and you might find them. They go back a long way.
  4. Hi all. My name is Nechama and I am getting banded on June 30th. I am a vegetarian (which I have a feeling may make things easier when it comes time to eat solids again!) and an Orthodox Jew. Looking forward to sharing this journey...
  5. i'm lacto ovo vegetarian too!!! (will eat dairy but no meat or fish of any kind). Doing great and there's plenty for us to eat and keep our protein up.
  6. Hello everyone..I am five days post open really sore...but this shall pass...anyways hoping to find some vegetarian lap banders for menu ideas...dairy ok...but meat..including fish....anybody out there?

    Ideas for non-meat proteins?

Morningstar stuff and Loma Linda brand meat substitutes are pretty good. I grew up vegetarian, and found some of my old childhood favorites (Loma Linda Big Franks) on Amazon. My sleeve is really liking the TVP, it sits better than meat for me. My only problem is that my family thinks it's gross, and even though I'm not asking them to eat it, they moan and complain anytime they "have" to watch me eat it. LOL. Seriously, meat substitutes don't taste like meat (IMHO) but if you don't expect that, if you let them taste like their own thing, they're pretty good. Granted, a lot of them look and smell like pet food, but once you cook it, it gets better.
  8. Read proteinoholics. It is a great book by Garth Davis. Excellent resource. He and his father are bariatric surgeons in Houston. Garth advocates a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle . Sent from my VS987 using the BariatricPal App

    7 weeks post opt

Mostly normal foods. My brother is a vegetarian so he cooks really healthy meals but I still have some of those old habits of picking on stuff at work all day. I stopped eating ice cream, cookies and chocolate bars. So I started buying some pecans and almonds, some high fiber cereal so I could pick in little bites. I can't eat ANY type of dairy anymore. I've tried to drink nonfat milk so I can eat some cereal but even that doesn't work. The lettuce always goes down slow and ends up frustrating me. But i've tried almost everything just to test myself. I can't really eat chicken because it gets stuck and becomes painful eventually. That's how i've ended up eating some bad foods rice, pasta stuff like that. However, on a lighter note I've been reading some nutritional books to learn how to mix my foods properly. Its a learning process, I have to train myself to change habits I've had all my life, its hard but worth it I'm sure.:scared:

    Carb Attack?

I log food. I watch but am not obsessive about my carbs. However my nutritionist recommended I keep calories low (currently between 700 -900) and carbs at no more than 50. I am vegetarian and my carbs can get a little higher. However they are from the plant based Proteins I eat. I avoid most "white" carbs like bread, pastas, white rice, crackers, etc.... One thing I have noticed is that those types of carbs can be like the never ending monster. If I have them I start to crave them. As long as I don't have them, I am fine. I also try to eat according to my day. A day like today that is a non gym mostly chill out day I eat lighter.

    I'm a Picky Eater...

Vegetables are a super important part of our new lifestyle. This is where you are going to get a lot of your nourishment from after surgery. I was a vegetarian for three years, and love almost all vegetables now. I started with meatless Monday. I did all vegetables, fruits and grains on that day. I then did a two week juice fast after watching Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. That changed my taste buds for sure. I was so happy to eat after the two weeks that I actually ate a raw beet on my first day of eating food after the fast. I have been eating lots of veggies ever since. Oven roasting and grilling are great for adding flavor to veggies. Roasted carrots, green beans, asparagus, beets, sweet potatoes, onions, and squash of all types are good. Try adding spinach, onion and tomato to egg white omelets. Ease yourself into other veggies by first starting with mixed veggies at lunch and/or dinner. Look up good recipes for thing like cabbage and collard greens. A pot of these can be spread over many meals. Stuffed bell peppers and/or poblano peppers are really good. There are tons of recipes on line of that as well. You have some time. Start now though. You do not want to go into your post-op diet not liking vegetables. Meat, cheese and eggs are great, but they will not be enough to nourish your body long-term.
  16. If your body is telling you to become a vegetarian, listen!! but I doubt you could limit carbs. That would be very very difficult on a veggie or vegan diet.
  17. For these guys...I use La Banderita Carb Counter whole wheat wraps for the tortillas. I'm not a carb counter...but these low carb whole wheat wraps taste great, only 50 calories per wrap, 4g of protein per wrap, and a whopping 11 grams of awesome dietary fiber per wrap! Go fiber! This recipe will make a BIG quesadilla. You'll only be able to eat a quarter to a half of it...so enlist help:) Throw one whole wheat tortilla wrap in a very hot pan. Top with the following: 2 T. Fresh chopped tomato 2 T. fresh chopped red onion 1 T. Black Beans 2 T. frozen sweet corn kernels. 1/4 cup of shredded reduced fat colby jack cheese Any kinda shredded meat that you like...chicken, pork, beef,...optional, but gives you extra protein bang for your buck and tastes great. (this is an awesome way to use up that little bit of grilled chicken/steak that you brought home from a restaurant cause you don't need a lot) Also great to eat these vegetarian style with just the cheese. Put another whole wheat tortilla wrap on top...cover to melt the cheese before you flip it....and cook both sides until it starts to brown and get crispy. Cut it into 8 wedges with a pizza cutter and serve with salsa, hot sauce, cilantro, gracamole, whatever you like on a quesadilla. Calories and protein for the whole recipe: Two whole wheat wraps 100 calories 8g protein 1/4 cup reduced fat colbyjack 90 calories 7g protein 2 T Black beans 80 calories 6g protein 2 T Tomatoes 4 calories 2 T Onion 8 calories 2 T Corn 20 calories 2 ounces Chicken Breast 94 calories 17g protein Total= 396 calories 38 grams of protein Remember... You'll only be able to eat a quarter to a half of one of these monsters. They're SUPER filling. 1/4 serving 99 calories 9.5 grams of protien 1/2 serving 198 calories 19 grams of protein Good family food, cause you can eat the fancy whole wheat wraps and the family can eat regular tortillas. Add other toppings. Maybe you like olives or cactus or hot peppers? Everyone make their own:) You could serve with refried beans, pico de gallo, lime, whatever your family enjoys.

    Vegetarians & Gastric Sleeve

My doctor's office pointed out that it's not "carbs" that matter so much as the kind of carbs. In other words, there's a big difference between the carbs in soybeans or a piece of fruit than those in potato chips or a candy bar. I was told to keep carbs under 120, but…see above. They said the quality of the carbs is what matters most. They also said I wouldn't be ABLE to eat enough carbs to cause any worries at this point, what with my tiny stomach capacity so early on. Of course, I do follow the mantra to always eat Protein first. I'm not a vegetarian, but have been a pescatarian (eat some fish, plus eggs and dairy) for 40 years. I have always had trouble getting enough protein (I log it every day on Sparkpeople), so I was worried about this. I'm just 10 days post-op, and just started pureed foods. I'm eating yogurt, vegetarian refried Beans with cheese, blended cottage cheese, ricotta, cream of wheat, applesauce or other fruit blended with unflavored unjury, and tofu. (You can do amazing things with tofu!) I haven't yet tried any fish or eggs. 'm not having any troubles to speak of and am hitting my protein goal every day. I'm also using protein powders and drinks. For example, every day I put 1/2 of a New whey Protein Shot (fruit punch flavor) in a 20 ounce bottle of Water. That gives me 21 grams of protein, plus helps me hit my liquid goal. The oddest thing so far for me is that plain ole H2O has always been my favorite drink -- I've never been a big soda drinker, and if I ever drank juice, I would cut it to 1/5 juice, 4/5 water. But since the sleeve, plain water tastes weird to me. So I hope you won't worry! I am finding it very manageable. And you know what else? It may be crazy or sacrilegious or something, but I WANT to lose somewhat slowly! I figure a slower loss will help with the skin sagging (I'm in my late 50s, and concerned about this). I also feel that an extra few months of getting to goal is not a big worry; after all, I plan to lose this weight for life. Unlike all the other times I've lost weight, this time I know it is going to come off and stay off! So if it takes a bit longer (and gives my skin time to catch up), I'm not going to stress out about it! Best of luck to you! Keep us posted!

    Frozen Dinners?

I'm a vegetarian and the hubs is not. I work full-time and go to college full-time. We probably eat frozen dinners 3 nights a week because I'm either to tired to cook or just don't have the time. Healthy Choice and Lean Cuisine now have low-sodium and low-fat options. And lucky for me, both are now making vegetarian dinners. Of course, hubs wants meat in his, lol. I'd suggest that you read the labels for sodium, calories, fat (including saturated fat), sugar and fiber. I've picked up some that look good and healthy. But, when I looked at the nutrition thing on the box it became clear that what looked good was practically a frozen 'heart attack in a box.' If you like butternut squash, try Lean Cuisine's Butternut Squash ravioli. It's one of my favorites.

    What Did You Eat Today?

I was banded August 15. Breakfast - brioche and honey-cinnamon butter and a cup of tea lunch - one sushi roll with tuna and avocado, and one vegetarian sushi roll, one strawberry, and one skim latte dinner - beef/vegetable lasagne Supper - don't know yet, but it will be something I have in my fridge/pantry. Probably a piece of fruit or maybe some yoghurt.

    Craving junk food!

Thanks gowalking but I liken my new nutrition to that of a vegetarian. I can get down things like collard greens, cabbage, green Beans, and oh Boston Markets seasoned Spinach (to die) but theyve gotta be cooked to mush. Vegetarians dont eat solid Proteins eithers. Oh and I love Peanut Butter. I do understand about the siders tho. But when I was able to eat solid proteins ie chicken beef fish, I lost nothing at all. I attribute 95% of my weightloss to not being able to tolerate these solid proteins.
  22. I'm a vegetarian. I am in the Atkins pre-op, and I decided to add fish for just these two weeks, but I feel confident that I'll go back to pure veg after surgery. I really considered adding meat during pre-op, but I just couldn't. I was thrilled to find out that the unjury chicken Soup does not have any chicken in it!
  23. I think a lot of eating meat after surgery involves getting past the hurdle that it might hurt. I make sure that I have some kind of sauce/moisture for meat and that I cut it into small bites and chew well. My sleeve (Rex) still won't tolerate anything remotely spicy, but I can now eat almost any meat without issues. As Meg said, there are many alternatives for Protein without eating meat. We have quite a few vegetarian sleevers around here. I love to check their group for new ideas. I personally eat a lot of cheese to help boost my protein intake, and I like a babybel in the morning before my Vitamins so that I don't get nauseous. SleevedMom, if you're getting nauseous from just putting the meat in your mouth, do YOU think it's a head issue or do you get sick once you chew up and swallow the meat? If it's a head issue, it may be time for a chat with your nutritionist or doctor about whether you're really ready for meat. It might even be a good idea to talk to a therapist about the meat issue. If it's a physical issue, for instance your tummy gets upset when you eat meat, you may just need to eat more vegetarian for a while. I've seen people who have continued with only protein bars/shakes long-term, and they do lose weight. IME, though, those people are the ones who never transition back to "normal" life. My late friend's sister in law is one of those and the sister in law ends up in the ER regularly because of malnutrition and dehydration. The sister in law says it's "too hard" to get in her Water and to eat normal food. Each time she goes in the hospital, they work on getting her into a routine where she's eating regular food and drinking water. She will comply long enough to get out of the hospital, then she's right back to only eating protein bars and drinking very little. Personally, I think the woman now has anorexia or something similar. It is really important to try to transition to getting your protein from food, but you may need some softer Proteins and some guidance from a nutritionist or therapist to get to that point. I think that is a very natural reaction since we've had such restricted diets before and after surgery. Add in that none of us want to damage our new sleeves and leaks are a terrifying complication, and it's a wonder that any of us ever manage to transition back to "regular" food after surgery! Good luck!! Please let us know how it goes.

    What are you eating?

Hey BLERdGirl I am just 6 days in right now and im also a vegetarian. Right now its just been changing the chicken broth to vegetable broth and i'm good, and getting vegan gelatin and making some home made fruit flavored gelatin. But i'm a bit concerned about the future, your comment gave me some hope. Do you have any other tips for vegetarians starting this new lifestyle? Seems like its pretty straight forward, but I figured I'd ask. Thank you for any help provided! All the best - Joel.
  25. Hello all, I'm very glad to be a part of this group. I'm 8 years post op. I was a size 22 & am now a size 8-10 & maintaining that weight. I lost about 80 lbs. I can now eat a normal sized meal, but my eating habits have totally changed. I'm a vegetarian, & I do eat fish occasionally. I use regular sugar now, but used only Splenda for 7 yrs post op. drink diet soda. I eat things like beans, lentils, quinoa, a have discovered a WORLD of vegetables. All labs are normal. I'm very happy. I might add, I still can't eat a whole veggie sub from Subway in one sitting. It's a waste of money to take me to a buffet. Lol! While I'm still diabetic, my sugars are normal. I do yoga instead of walking due to an injured back. That's a ton about me now!! Gonna have a consult with plastic surgeon next week or so for reconstructive surgery!! Hope to hear from you all.
