Postop diet advice
Dogmom68 replied to Michele 2021's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First of all, congratulations on your weight loss! 25 lbs is great! However, I do understand how you feel when your weight loss slows or stalls. What I did recently was cut back on dairy and carbs and started incorporating more healthy fats like avocado and green olives. I even started drinking bulletproof coffee in the morning. (Coffee with a teaspoon of Kerrygold unsalted butter. Trust me, you can’t taste it.) I stopped drinking protein shakes and use GenePro protein powder to supplement my protein levels. I use MyFitnessPal app to track my macros and keep tabs on how many calories I’m eating. I can’t exercise very well because of a spine condition but I try to stay very active around the house doing chores, etc… Watch your sugar/carb intake through yogurt and oatmeal. Try switching to boiled eggs in the morning. These are things that have worked for me. I know everybody is different but these are just suggestions. Just thought I would share. Take it one day at a time, listen to what your body tells you, and keep going! You CAN do this!!! -
I'd highly recommend GenePro. It's pretty expensive but, it is worth it 100%. On amazon it is $47 for 47 servings. BUT the key is that the scoop amount is so much smaller, approx. 2 tablespoons for 30grams of protein. I found that when I was only a few weeks post op, I couldn't consume that much liquid. So when I went to mix in unflavored protein powder, the amount of powder wouldn't mix in right. It would be chunky or "grainy". With Genepro, I could still get in my protein requirements with less powder and less liquid. Plus it mixes well with hot and cold liquids.

It depends on what stage you are at in your journey. If you are pre-op now, I wouldn't worry about using protein shakes. Trust me, you will get sick of them soon after surgery, so you don't want to exacerbate the problem by drinking protein shakes before you need to. Best protein sources pre surgery and post surgery are fish and lean meats. Greek yogurt and cottage cheese help as well (just keep the carbs below 20g per yogurt). You can get plant based proteins, as well, but I found it is a lot harder until you get further along. In my first few weeks, I mixed the protein powder with broth, diluted 100% juice, FairLife milk, and I actually made these 2 once jello cups and mixed in the Genepro. Each Jello cup gave me 12.5 grams of protein. As I went into pureed foods, I did a lot of soups. Mostly of my own making, because so many of the store bought soups have too much sodium in them. The recipe for the jello cups: 1 box of sugar free Jello with 5 scoops of GenePro protein. Makes 14, 2oz cups. I bought the cups from the dollar tree. They are plastic with lids that restaurants will send home condiments in.

The need to eat until stuffed
UNJURY replied to nnagle323's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
hi Mrs SugarBabe and ShelterDog64 I don't generally comment on competitive products but we believe that the GENEPRO marketing is potentially misleading. This is what was said on the message board used by bariatric dietitians back in the fall (things might have changed since then): one RD said: ----------------- "....I never heard of this product, but I am highly skeptical. When I first looked at their website I couldn't wrap my head around a 15g serving having 30g of Protein without defying the laws of physics. ..." and this is what one of the RDs here at UNJURY® Protein posted back then: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "...Using information available on the Musclegen Research website (shopmusclegen.com/protein?product_id=172), reviewed today, September 1, 2016, my calculations reveal that the nutrition label of this product may be misleading. One container of GenePro is 11.8 ounces, or 334 grams. There are 30 servings per container, and the label indicates that one serving provides 30 grams of protein. Therefore, 1 container should provide 900 grams of protein. You may check my calculations to ensure they are correct using the link provided. If your calculations are equivalent to mine, do you believe it’s possible for 334 grams of powder to contain 900 grams of protein?..." If you have more questions about this, you can call the UNJURY® Protein toll free number and ask for Jerome. I hope this is helpful. Jerome at UNJURY® Protein -
The need to eat until stuffed

It's almost ALL about self-control at where you and I are post-operatively! You're not meeting your protein goals, which is devastating to weight loss and feeling satiated by your food. I've not done the best job during the holidays, and I'm in a 3 week long stall right now. I know it's because I'm not keeping my carbs down and my protein up, and I'm not tracking every bite I put into my mouth. You should be losing more/more consistently than you are, maybe a re-start with Protein shakes and then advancing yourself through the different stages to reset your diet would be helpful. And you don't mention using any Protein powder...I still have to use it to get my protein grams high enough. On a normal day, I use GENEPRO unflavored in my morning coffee, so I start off with 20-30 grams of protein in a 12 ounce mug of coffee, with monkfruit sweetener and cream. Some days I have a container of plain yogurt with a little low-carb granola mid-morning, or cottage cheese with a tablespoon of pureed fruit stirred in. Lunch, I eat a cheese stick and a couple of slices of deli turkey. I have a handful of almonds or half an apple with Peanut Butter for an afternoon snack, then 3-4 ounces of my family's dinner protein and around 1/4 cup of vegetables. And I almost always have a sugar-free popsicle before dinner. That typical day gets me about 850 cals, 95 grams protein and 50 grams of carbs, with only 21 of them being sugars. I lose when I'm eating like that...80 lbs since the end of June. You've got the tool in place, you just need to commit to using it correctly, find ways to distract yourself when you're hungry (exercise, clean house, work, garden...whatever works) and get back on track. There's literally no reason for you to NOT be successful! Go get it, you CAN do this!! Does the genpro change the consistency of your coffee at all? I can not wait until I have a taste for coffee again lol but think that is a great idea to meet protein goals! Just can not do a consistency change as I won't enjoy it! Lol Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App -
I couldn't stand the taste of protein shakes/powders. Until i bought the unflavoured genepro 30g protein per scoop. You can mix it in anything. I usually mix it with 20oz of h20 and 1 packet of crystal light. That way i get my h20 and my protein in. By far the best way to get my protein in. Sent from my LM-Q730 using BariatricPal mobile app

Following the rules

@@Tashabella - If you think you still need supplemental Protein, try the unflavored protein, like Prosource, Isopure, Un jury or GENEPRO and add it to Soups & broth instead. As for drinking Water, try setting alerts on your phone. Something like drink half a cup every hour. As for exercise start simple. Google for quick workouts or check On Demand with your cable provider. Look for 10 - 15 min work out. Do them in the morning and in the evening. You'll have 30 minutes of exercise and not even feel it. If you need to go simpler, get some really light hand weights. 3lbs -5lbs would do. Walk the length of your house 3 times a day holding the weights. Swing your arms slightly as you walk. -

GENEPRO is fantastic! No taste, ZERO! Add it to anything, hot or cold. It does not change the texture or flavor. No aftertaste, nothing! -
I added peanut butter powder from the beginning no problem. Also try unflavored protein powder. I used genepro. Add it to some milk to get in extra protein. The cran grape protein beverage powder isn't very sweet. You may also want to try that. You can order on Amazon or the bariatric pal store. Get the powder. I found the liquid concentrate to be sweeter. You can also add some spices...i used cinnamon to flavor my shakes. If your doctor allows coffee or tea you can also mix with protein shake or unflavored protein powder. I felt weak and tired for the first couple of weeks too. You are not alone. Post-op aversion to protein drinks?
Mrs. Mercedes replied to Mrs. Mercedes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for your suggestions. I have been soooo tempted to eat eggs for the same reason - weakness and malnutrition. But I have ordered some Unjury protein powder which I’ve heard is easy to mix and I will try the injury soups as well. Glad I’m not alone in this aversion! Thank you for the suggestion! I have a few things I need to order on amazon so I will add Genepro to my cart. -
Protein deficiency at 6 months?!?
Frustr8 replied to mousecat88's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Stir Genepro or another protein powder into everything you can? That 🐭🐱is a hard hard question to answer. I feel like I'm a protein with occasional sides of veggies myself. Don't you feel like screaming YOU CANT GET BLOOD FROM A TURNIP! , cause I sure do! -
I tried the Genepro and as everyone said I cannot taste it which is great. The only issue is , that I use lukewarm water in a coffee mug about halfway and stir in the Genepro with a fork and it completly dissolves. Then I mix in more water and stir in Chicken bouillon powder and microwave it to heat everything up.. After a couple minutes sitting the protein powder starts to clump up a little.. Is this normal ? Thanks

Genepro is all I use. I cant take the other shakes they make me want to gag. Im not sure how you mix it with coffee though as I no longer drink it since surgery. I mix mine with crystal light every morning when I wake up.

Help with water intake and protein
QueenOfTheTamazons replied to alemapsept15's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I suggest finding a high protein powder. I am preop but was having a hard time getting the 64oz liquid plus the protein drinks down. I found genepro medical grade protein and add it to my shakes, jello and sometimes other bevetages to boost my protein. Its 30g per tbs and has very little of the "ugh thats protein powder" flavor. Its does have a protein powder smell, but not bad according to my husband. -

Surgery is scheduled for 10/21!
lizonaplane replied to hopeainsley's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wish my tastes had changed after surgery, but they did not. I still can't stand protein powder (it's the texture - I only like pre-mixed shakes) and I still love sweets. I have tried the vegan shakes, but they are very gritty to me. If you have a dairy allergy, those will likely be your only option, as the others (including the two most popular unflavored options - isopure and genepro) are whey isolate. However, if you are just lactose intolerant, you are likely to be able to use the whey protein isolate, as it is lactose free. I like the fairlife nutrition plan shakes the best. Those are lactose and gluten free but NOT DAIRY free. Please note that a LOT of brands made with whey isolate will say "dairy free" but obviously, they are not dairy free (for example, Muscle Milk). Good luck! -
Protein protein protein!
cuteNATL replied to kjkashmaniac's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got tried of Premier Protein really quick... No now I try to drink two cups of Fairlife Fat Free milk with sugar free chorale mixed in... And a scoop of GENEPRO Protein mixed in as well... It's odorless and tasteless. You can also put it in yogurt.. -
I have bought some PB2 and I was wondering if anyone has any good thinks to do with it than the usual. I am also trying to find unjury in my area and am unable to find it. Can anyone give me any ideas on things to get besides Unjury? Same as the GENEPRO, I can't find that either.

Hello! I am 3 weeks post op tomorrow. I am having a very hard time with my multi-Vitamins and Protein. I bought some chewable citricale at CVS and it is so disgusting it makes me gag. I ordered some liquid Wellnese online - it came today and the taste is unbearable. Something has happened to my taste buds - things I could power through before are really impossible now. If I force myself to drink/chew it, I just throw it up. Also, am struggling with protein. I did the premiere shakes for pre-op and was able to tolerate them fine (didn't love them but got through it). Now, I cannot even look at them - seriously. Someone on here mentioned GENEPRO - i bought that and have been able to add to crystal light but it's still got a whey aftertaste and having to face tons of that every day has me really frustrated. I also bought some Syntrax Necter and it's just as bad as the others. Today, I bought some Carnation Instant and going to try that but it doesn't have as much protein so I am going to have to drink so much of it, if I can stand it. So, any help, suggestions, commiserating or encouragement is welcome. I spent most of today in tears. It just seems like this is never going to end - that everything I ever drink/eat is going to taste like whey protein. Tomorrow, I am supposed to start soft foods, but honestly, nothing sounds good at all. I thought I would be so excited to add new things. But it all just makes me nauseous. I stopped even having Soup 4 days ago because I couldn't stomach it. So, all I am really having is tons of crystal light whey drink. It's depressing.

All I want to do is cheat on my diet
NerdySongBird replied to 90’schild's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can't stand the shakes because I'm really not a big fan of sweets. I just moved on to the soft solids stage of my diet and the hard part for me is separating liquids from meals. I reccomend Genepro protein powder because a tiny scoop is 30g of protein. You can put it in just about anything and it's amazing! And when you advance your diet there is a keto version of pretty much everything you crave. Hang in there! Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app
