I think it is very realistic to only want to be as filled as necessary to lose weight. For that reason, even though it frustrated the heck out of me, I appreciated the slowness with which my doctor gave fills. I have lost weight pretty slowly (but steadily) but was able to get used to each level of restriction as it came rather than suddenly reaching it and having to adjust. On the other hand, I am a HUGE proponent of getting the fills and restriction you need. I needed 5 fills before I got any noticeable restriction at all. (7.5 ccs in a 10 cc band) It made all the difference in the world. I would not have lost the 31.5 pounds I have lost had I not reached the proper level of restriction. I could not lose weight at all without the band and I needed to have quite a bit of restriction before I saw the scale move at all. Even at my sweet spot I am not breaking any weight loss records but I am happy because the band has finally allowed me to lose something!!! So what I am saying is: you need to determine what the right level of restriction is for you. I can eat about 2/3 of a fast food hamburger, but I can't eat the fries etc. that go with it. (And it's a hamburger, not a double cheeseburger!) If I could stay at a level of restriction that allowed me to eat a whole hamburger and fries, AND still lose weight, you better believe I would do that!!! But for me, nope. I need restriction. Just listen to your body and watch the scale. You will know what to do.

Is the band right for me?
sfeiner replied to southerngirltx's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
In my opinion, the band is for people with a lot of patience and a willingness to really work at following the lapband rules. It's not a quick fix but more of a lifetime change. You will still have to watch what you eat very carefully but you won't be feeling hungry so it will be easy (after you have the proper amt of restriction which might take months) If you need to lose a lot fast and don't have much self control, then I wouldn't suggest the band. The by-pass might be better. Hope that helps. -
. Hi I am 5 1/2 months post op In the beginning I didn't feel hunger. Now what I feel is empty.... I can eat one bite of Protein and take that feeling away. Of course I eat what I am supposed to eat. Getting to little calories can put us in a stall. So I make sure to get in my 3 meals a day. My stomach feels the same. It is such a weird feeling when I am eating something I really am enjoying.... And would love to eat more than my normal portion ( 3/4 to 1 cup) of food. But I can't do it my tummy gets full real fast. That is the Beauty of the sleeve.... It is built in portion control! I can tell you if Feel that empty feeling and have eaten my 3 meals I eat sugar free Jello and bam the feeling is gone. Amazing how often I have mistaken gas for hunger. I know this might sounds crazy to some.... But I have on a few occasions felt intestinal rumbles of gas and thought it was hunger.... Now I can tell the difference. Before I couldn't. Enough rambling! Best wishes to you!

I have enjoyed my sleeve, but worry about not getting in my fruits and vegetables. I was introduced to a new product and feel great. I'm not trying to sell you anything as you can watch videos for yourself! I count my protein everyday and get full so fast I can't eat my fruits or vegetables. This company has a nutritional juice and an energy drink I'm in love with! Go to www.sozolife.com/ignition This company is ground floor and is only in the pre launch phase in Texas! Will launch in April. It hasn't gotten to any other states yet! I only want to share so others that are interested can take this product or become a distributor. I'm not a distributor, but an advocate for the product! My friend who has colitis introduced me and is now off of Imodium. It's a true blessing!

I would call your doctor's office and ask what's going on. Honestly, I wasn't hungry for 2 weeks after my surgery, and all I was taking in was 2 diluted slim fasts and lots of coffee. I wasn't allowed soft foods until 2 weeks after my surgery.

 Wow where do I start? I just need to let people know how the lapband has changed my life. I started 3 years ago weighing in at 350lbs. Now my weight is right at 200lbs. I still have about 40-50lbs to go. But I feel like even if I dont loose any more weight I have done something with the band that most people dont accomplish. I just want people to know that the lapband really does work. It just takes time. Yeah I know that it is not as fast as the gastric but I felt it was much safer for me. :cool2: Just wanting to know if anyone else felt the same thing.

yeah the pain after the surgery was more than I expected as well, if i had known i would have been more prepared mentally for it.... The gas pains were really bad in my chest and left side, breathing deeply, walking when I could and doing little coughs has helped that, I think I got it all out now... I am having very little pain today just a little around the port area when i stand or sit, I am doing fine on the slim fasts (low carb diet ones) they keep me full and no other desire to eat or snack on anything, I weighed this morning and it was 230! I am just amazed this is the first time in years I have been below 245 lbs I think if you can get a few slim fasts in a day that is plenty of Protein, like 60g and with Vitamins and Calcium supplements we should all be great! Seems like we are missing something cause we dont eat as much as we used to lol I know, but I am really starting to love that I did this for myself...

I have the "sliming" thing too...But, I've been told that occurs because of eating too fast OR too big of a bite and/or not chewing enough. The fills are to restrict you on how much you can eat and only give you the full sensation after a max of 1 cup of food...If you can eat more then 1 cup of food at one sitting then you need a fill. If you are "sliming" try slowing down and taking tiny little bites of food and chew them 20-30 times each bite. It is hard work - But so is anything we must do to lose weight. Good luck - hope this helps. As well, there are some foods that just don't go down nice no matter how much you chew - the slime comes (for me this is bread, pizza, and sometimes yogurt).

Yep...I sure would like the weight o come off fast:-(. I was sleeved on 2/6 and down 35 pounds. I went into a crazy 3 week stall that made me think I was some kind of anomaly:-). How can I lose 80 percent of my stomach and still not lose weight!? I'm passed that now. Happy for the weight I've lost and thankful it is still heading in the right direction albeit slow. Took me years to get this big. That's what I keep telling myself. Good luck

I am so glad your sinuses cleared up. Hope your recovery is fast and your weight loss is even faster!

Yes Michelle, thanks. I really should email Dr Miranda I think for suggestions. Pre op I don't think I was even listening to her I have to admit. I was so nervous/excited/anxious/etc about banding that all I talked to was like the teacher on Peanuts cartoons going "wa wa wa waaaaaa wa wa wa". Today was a reality check as I pushed a bit too hard. I don't think I hurt anything because it was just walking (not even fast pace). I just think I went too far. A good nap cured me.

Heavy and lengthy menstrual cycle after banding?
Lanakila replied to lafrogura's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good Question!!! Here's the medical reason in a nutshell. Fat affects estrogen, which is a female hormone. When you lose fat, your bodies hormone levels naturally change. When you lose fat FAST, your hormones go out of whack. It's ok, and it will eventually even out, especially once you hit your sweet spot and start losing at a steadier rate. -
Had surgery on 9/4/06 and my last fill was 11/14/06... I'm about 2.5 in a 4cc band.. Self Pay.. My band has always been tight in the morning.. usually Soup for lunch.. then maybe a salad, health choice dinner... etc.. About 3 days ago I started getting acid reflux around lunch time and i have not eating anything.. Drink Water too fast.. ends up coming back up... cant eat anyting mushie, not even anything cold.. has to be hot.. Never had this problem.. getting scared maybe slippage.. Hope you got a picture of what is going on. .I seem to ramble on and on and on.. Thanks for reading and any info would be great.!! Thanks Stephanie

Probably not. A PB does not involve stomach muscles or that heaving we all know and hate that is vomiting. Sliming is just a heck of a lot of saliva and that shouldn't have any effect on the band. It would be better to avoid PBs, just because it's usually indicative that you are eating too fast, taking bites that are too big, or not chewing particularly well, but I don't think it harms anything other than, perhaps, your pride if it happens in public.

Nervous, Need information on lap-band.
sharon_57 replied to sharon_57's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi, and thanks . I am excited about the surgery but like I said I am also scared.. I wish I could just have it today and not have the waiting part but there are lots of tests I am sure I will have to do before the surgery. I am going to the siminar that Dr. Baker is doing on the 2nd of March. Not much longer for that one. Then on the 11th of March , I go to group therapy. I don't have any idea what happens next..If you don't mind could you give me an idea for what is next..I hope I can get through all of this stuff pretty fast. I am ready for my surgery now.. I am glad you are doing so well with your surgery .. I really think I will do ok too.. Good luck and God bless you.. Hope to hear from you soon... -
Will & Will-Nots for Pre & Post-Bandsters

LMAO thank you.. but you know the really sad/funny part about those car calories is.. I live alone so really WHO am I hiding the from??? But I will do it every time, I will sit out in my car (parked in the drive way) and eat (usually finish eating) whatever fast food crap I bought and throw the bags away before I go inside. I realized it one day and had to laugh at myself, but it's so not funny. I caught myself doing it last night infact. I decided a Protein burger was on my pre-op diet and did the same thing, sat in the car, ate it and threw the bags away. BAD BAD BAD.. gotta get my head right. Sigh. - Maybe I should open fast food for WLS patients.. here's ya Protein shake, and your bite o' burger.. you don't have room for fries, that's why they're not on the menu...NEXT!!! lol -
You Annoyed much!?! I am!
terry1118 replied to *Misty*Raine*'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That being said, I had no fear of it happening to me. I was at a point where, though I wasn't suicidal, I felt that death might be preferable to living my life as miserable as I was, unhappy and in pain and unable to enjoy anything. My surgery was uneventful, no complications or problems, very little pain, fast healing, and very successful. I've lost over100lbs so far and I'm happier than I have been in YEARS! -
I was sleeved on the 12th. I'm going through the same thing. I get dizzy when I stand up too fast. It can be due to dehydration (I can tell I'm a little dehydrated, but not majorly). It can also be because of blood sugar or electrolytes being off. Or low blood pressure. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Hi, I an also on my 6 day pre-op. On my 3rd day, I thought I was going to go crazy. Everybody around me was eating, it felt like they were eating all of my favorite fast foods. I literally almost broke down. I started crying saying why did I let myself get like this. I was extra hungry. Then I had a long talk with husband, looked at my grandkids and came back to senses. I'm still struggling a little, but I guess that's normal. You got this. You only have a couple more days left. I have surgery on Thursday. I am very nervous. My date is fast approaching (1/10/12).. and as I started my Pre-op diet I am feeling a little sad. I see my friends going out eating drinking doing our normal thursay-saturday routine. I haven't gone out because I am scared I will cheat they have noticed my weight loss and I have told them I just want to be healthier .. some encourage me others don't pay much attention. It may be odd but I don't like when someone points out my weight loss in front of other.. I almost feel ashamed! IS THIS NORMAL!? How can I go about tell my encour aging frineds what is going on because to be honest I don't think I can keep up with them afterwards!! Will I ever live that "normal" 21 year old life?! I keep telling myself I am getting something well worth it in return, just getting some jitters I think!! Any advice would be very helpful!!

Single large "hiccup" when I first drink
Pescador replied to Missy161's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
4years post op we hiccup every single time we overeat or eat too fast. Great reminder to watch it! -
Hi Mel, My insurance does cover my surgery and it did cover my psych evalu or as much as it will with my 90/10 rate so it only cost me 35 dollars. Once I started this part of the pre-op, it went really fast. My liquid diet was bad the first 4 days but all is good now. I think it will help prepare me for the Stage one portion of my new diet. Good Luck!!

June 2020 I think I'm doing this wrong. Help!!
rjan replied to Thevillegirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
How much weight you lose is incredibly variable. As catwoman7 says, people who start heavier lose faster. Men usually lose faster than women. People also tend to lose slower if they lost a lot of weight pre-op because a lot of the initial weight loss in any diet is water and sugar and fat stored in your liver. This will be at least 2 lbs, but up to 10 lbs of the initial weight you lose, and happens pretty quickly in a week or two. If you did a pre-op diet, you already lost that 'easy' weight, so it doesn't come off so quickly post-op. Still - 20 lbs in 3.5 weeks is a resounding success for just about anyone. If it's all fat, that corresponds to about a 3,000 calorie deficit a day. If you're hardly eating anything now - that's actually a little faster than you'd expect from doing the math, unless you're a super muscly weight lifter with a fast metabolism. For comparison, I lost 15 lbs in the same time period. I started out at 210 lbs, 5'5'', 40 year old woman. Now 4 months out I am losing about 1.5-2 lbs a week. WLS isn't about losing weight super fast - it's about losing it permanently! Also, I can really sympathize with your feeling that it is hard to swallow anything - like it kind of gets stuck. It felt like that for me for about 1-2 months. It slowly got better over time, and I was able to take bigger and bigger swallows until it finally went away completely. I think it has to do with the swelling around the incisions on your stomach. That will get better soon. -
Finally Ready to Work Out! Your suggestions?
PrettyThick1 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm nearly half-way to my goal and I'm just now getting the workout bug. I checked my weight and took a long hard look at myself in the mirror this morning. Sizing up what was coming off, what was sagging and what was being plain old stubborn. I walk a lot at work and I take the stairs rather than the elevator, so I felt like I was getting enough activity. I realize I'm not getting it because those are short stints and the goal is to raise your heart rate for at least 30 minutes and I can only do that with real cardio exercises. So, my plan is to try to get up earlier in the morning and jump on the bike that's been gathering dust in my garage for a couple of years and get after it. I also have a gym membership, but haven' been using it because I spend so much time at work and away from my daughter as it is that I'd feel like I wasn't being a good parent if I spent another hour away from her. I know from past experience that you have more energy after working out than when you start and I'm looking forward to that. I'm not a morning person, so it's going to be a challenge to lose that extra hour of sleep every day. Sigh. My questions to you guys: What motivated you to start exercising? What did you start with (other than walking)? How fast did you see/feel results? Are morning or evening exercises more beneficial to you? How has working out affected you mentally and physically? I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but your responses will benefit me...and others greatly!
