  1. This surgery will not control your hunger. It might change it, lessen it. Food will be different, cravings will be different. But you'll still get hungry. It will also not change your ability to overeat yourself into gaining weight. It will be more difficult than before to overdo it, because you'd have to eat many times a day, but you can definitely still get hungry and eat yourself to weight gain. Ultimately, the surgery doesn't do the "work"....you have to do the work. The surgery gives you a jump start. It gives you restriction so that your ability to screw up in one setting is minimal. And it gives you a chance to revamp your diet and pick a forever diet that is more sensible. It gives you more rapid reward for good habits like exercising, sticking to your calorie budget, and making good choices. But it's no miracle. In the end, all the work is on you.

5 years and it is never too late

@playlikeworldchamps congrats on "regaining" your success. must be hard to loose weight regain. 65 lbs - terrific!! you are aces i was sleeved 6+ years ago. i "assumed" once i lost my weight - that was it. no more problems, weight gain etc. WRONG!! i gradually heard from OP (VETS) that you can/will gain weight if you don't follow all your P's and Q's you learned as a newbie. Newbies need to learn/realize they must continue/follow how they ate as a newbie. water, protein, carbs forever. most OP do stretch the rules as time (years go by) nothing lasts forever. welcome to the real world.!! newbie beware good luck Kathy
  3. Yeah..it was interesting...on a day that I even was walking around San Francisco all day at a conference and logged over 20K steps..the next day I was up 5lbs!! I had seen this with a few other bandsters who had complete unfills..it was a quick weight gain with no stopping it with diet and excercise..any normal person restricted to 500-600 calories a day should be losing a few lbs a day..not gaining it..but I think it is just the abnormal state of being our bodies are throw into when banded..I think if I did not restrict my calories like I did, I would have gained more..my body adjusted to this new set point and now is maintaining there.. I wish I could trust that I would be okay with just living without a band and hope for the best and try with diet and excercise that failed many times before. I'm older and metabolism is slower, about to hit menopause anytime now which doesn't help..so if I can get this weight back off and maintain it..I would be happy. If I was good at eating healthy ALL the time and excercising all the time, I never would have been overweight and needed the band. We are humans..we need food..we love food..we will always slip and fall when it comes to food. I wish I had that willpower..never did and won't start now at age 50.. Anyway...best of luck to you!! I will post my follow up...

    WLS, Hypothyroid, PCOS- TTC

Hi I can relate to your story. I’ve been diagnosed with PCOS . I had my first child no problem but due to extra weight gain I’m not having regular periods and ovulation is difficult. I’m going to have sleeve operation in September/October loose the excess weight so I can conceive naturally

16 yrs Banded, Now May have to revise to sleeve! HELP!

It's interesting that you gained 30 lbs eating only 500 calories a day. The band does not change your metabolism, so I'm confused about that. But yes, for me the discomfort and constant feeling of having a heart attack is simply not worth it. I was absolutely miserable. It's only been 2 weeks since I've had no restriction but I haven't gained anything at all. There were times with the band where I gained 10 lbs in a week because I fell off the wagon with my diet. My eating habits are so much healthier now, so I'm looking forward to keeping a good attitude towards food without the band. I was also doing cardio and strength training 4-5 days a week, which I will get back to when I'm healed up from the removal. I was very encouraged by a post on this site by AZbandster. She had a very similar experience to mine and has done well maintaining without the band. I just found that the band did not actually stop weight gain for me. Like I mentioned, I could eat horrible and gain 10 lbs easily even with the band full. I had to make permanent changes to the way I thought about food. I actually began a pescatarian diet 6 months ago which helped me lose the most recent 10 lbs I lost. Now I'm looking forward to trying a more vegan based diet with seafood proteins a few times a week. The pescatarian diet is helping with my digestion, sleep, and so many other improvements, like my hair and skin so I'm hoping to continue to see benefits. With regard to the payment, my insurance covered the removal with no hoops but not a revision. Wish you the best as well. I'll be sure to check back in on you to see how you're doing.
  6. My elbows are a darker color, I’ve scrubbed, I’ve used fade lotions, I’ve tried every home remedy. It’s not dry caked on skin it’s just a pigmentation discoloration- to clarify. Did this go away after weight loss? Hoping it does because it only appeared after weight gain [emoji849][emoji849][emoji849]
  7. Trying to find women like me who had surgery to regain their fertility.. I have secondary infertility due to pregnancy induced Hypothyroid with an underlying of PCOS. Basically before baby 1 I was healthy & fit with no issues. That pregnancy caused my thyroid to crap out, causing the imbalance of hormones (pcos), causing the weight gain... Here I am 3 years later & 180lbs heavier getting surgery in two weeks as an RE (reproductive endocrinologist) recommendation to hopefully conceive naturally when I am cleared to do so. I am 23, reach out with your story if you are or were in the same boat!!
  8. The reason why bariatric surgery is the most successful procedure for severely overweight people is because it resets your metabolic floor, to an extent. Normal dieting doesn't do that. Basically, if you're an identical twin and you gain to 350 while your sister stays at 150, if you diet your metabolism generally doesn't recover to match your sister's - you CAN diet down to 150, but to stay at that weight you'll have to ingest far, far fewer calories than your sister does to maintain and that means you feel like you're starving the whole time. It's a weird spooky piece of science that hasn't quite been cracked yet, but bariatric surgery seems to avoid that trap. That's why many of us get it; not just because we can lose weight and feel restriction, but because it means when we get to 150 we can ingest a reasonable amount of daily calories without gaining again. Your metabolism isn't at that stage yet, in fact your metabolism sounds like it's pretty manageable. And the issues you're describing sound psychological, like food addiction, or might be metabolic like PCOS. Both of those are manageable without surgery, especially if you're tackling it now when you're still young and close to a healthy weight. When people say they're having weight loss surgery to prevent getting ill or grinding down their knees, they're talking about something that is the logical trajectory of inaction from their current weight. You're not there yet, you're talking about the surgery to prevent getting obese and in turn prevent other complications. But you're not obese, so tackle that part first. It's called "weight loss surgery" for a reason, and is not "prevention of weight gain surgery" for that same reason. Don't get sliced up without exhausting all available options for managing your weight while you're still in a healthy range. This is not a quick fix and it definitely won't prevent you from eating enough calories to gain if you're still working through a food fixation. That's why YouTube is full of regain videos.
  9. Hello. So happy you are all here!! I was just sleeved (revision from Lap Band) less than 1 week ago (3/15/18). In December 2016 I had hip replacement surgery. I am a runner and this put me out of commission and thus weight gain (40 lbs since then). With my new "bionic" hip I am ok to run again (Dr. not super happy....but I am). Now with this new surgery, when can I get back to running again? or truly any type of exercise for that matter? I realize that the sleeve is a tool and so want to incorporate my running with it for maximum results. Thank you in advance for any replies and/or suggestions!
  10. Hi Lee, I'm 49 and almost 4 years out. I love being this age an no more periods to worry about. Just a few options to think about or try. Menopause and women having their period struggle. Hormones, water weight and cravings. Uggg the joy's of being female. I took the same route as @jess9395 I workout. Let the hot flashes work for you by walking or elliptical. Menopause will give you double the sweat. Getting in physical activity pays off mentally and physically as you go through the change. It is a bit harder to lose weight/maintain with the sleeve years out. Just know it can be done. The vet's have been talking about the sleeve holding more food after a year. I miss the tighter restriction. I can easily get in more calories. Honestly, My weight gains have been from me being complacent, eating more calories, carbs and sugar. I have to monitor/log and get back into the discipline and motivation that I had in the beginning to get the weight back off. Revision is an option. Question to the bypass patients. Years out can you regain by eating carbs, sweets and extra calories? What ever you choose,I hope you find what will work long term
  11. Help one year since surgery. Up until a few weeks ago maintaining all the weight I lost at goal 75 pounds down. Now the hunger has come back to a degree and I put on four pounds in the last week. Am so upset. I know I am eating to many snacks. Also has anyone been diabetic free for more than five years. I have been off of medication for it since the day after surgery. But heard for some reason it usually returns after five years. Also anyone have any recommendations for skin wrinkles? Bad on face especially neck. Sorry for so many questions but just found this site. Thank you and suggestions for any of the above would be appreciated.

    Alcohol

This! The 100 lb weight loss has much more of an effect than the sleeve surgery. I drank 3 weeks post op, daily for a week. I found I had no taste for it, and therefore drank slowly and didn't finish my drinks. I never even felt buzzed. But I have a high tolerance, and I'm sure my weight is a big part of that. What it did do is sabotage my wight loss for that week. With the alcohol I averaged 700 cals, but managed to gain 2 lbs that week. So the weight gain has made me swear off drinking until I get near my goal!

    Any March 2018 Sleevers?

Day 7 Clear Liquids: soooo ready for a protein shake!! Soooo sick of "sweet". But I've busted through the last of the surgery water weight gain and I'm officially a loser now, so there is that! My abdominal tenderness improves every day, but the incisions itch like crazy. I'm drinking 2 ounces of clear liquids at a time now, every 24 minutes over 12 hours -- its an all-day job! Best wishes for safe, uneventful surgeries this week, peeps!
  14. Hi Lee! I had surgery June 2014. Started at 261 and lowest weight was 185. I have gained back up to 205. I'm miserable and I'm hungry ALL OF THE TIME! I am 48 and I think menopause is playing a factor with my weight gain. Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Any March 2018 Sleevers?

Day 5 clear liquids begins! One more to follow. I'm getting a light-headed. I quit BP medicine post-surgery, but I am checking regularly to make sure my BP is OK (it is). Surgery weight gain is almost gone, just one pound left to go before I hit losing territory. Sense of smell is elevated, hunger is dampened. Its weird not eating. I'm ready to eat. Even a protein shake sounds amazing right now :-). I've had a couple of SF popsicles and jello and both are way too sweet to really enjoy. Drinking aloe vera jc and probiotics every day. Just hanging in there! No regrets, just a simmering relief that it actually happened.

    CA - Bay Area

I have GERD and my surgeon talked me into a sleeve ( which exacerbates GERD) instead of the bypass ( which cures GERD). He said this is because the GERD is caused by the weight gain. Now i am worried. Surgery is April 3.
  17. No personal experience but my surgeon performs duo switch to revise sleeve after weight gain or if loss is not enough.

Going on 20 years post op

Sherry, hope I'm not out of line here but it seems that you're pretty much a success as far as weight loss goes. Fluctuating between 10-20lbs after 19yrs doesn't look so bad. From what I read and experienced many not only gain their original weightless back and then some. You're right on point to be on top of the weight gain and to lose it but overall kudos to you for doing such a good job.
  19. Thank you all for your insight! I double and triple checked with my insurance, even read the medical jargon 14 page breakdown of coverage and requisites for it, and no time threshold was set. They only request proof of continued weight gain with attempts at weight loss, which I have. Here's to hoping that may speed up my process!

    Any March 2018 Sleevers?

Are you guys itchy yet? Have you pooped? Have you lost your surgery weight gain? Inquiring minds want to know!
  21. I think those super fast weight gains have to be mostly water retention. Particularly where you usually have a strict diet and then you're having salt and highly processed food. A week back on track should take care of it! You can do it!
  22. Oh sweetie, that post surgery iv and inflammation weight gain is a heartbreaker!!! I think it took me a week or more just to get back to my SW. ((hugs)) I did it too. I weighed maybe 3-4 times a day to see...is the fluid coming off yet? Is it coming off yet? LOL. Not quite 4lbs/week, but entirely, wholly average. I'm average. I'm just average. I'm an average girl. Gah!!!! I'd like to put the FU in average!

    6 week stall

I seem to be stalled as well. The discouragement is tremendous. It makes it difficult to stick to a diet. I don't eat much of course but picking only healthy foods is not as easy. Eat healthy for 2 weeks and no loss. Cheat occassionaly and no weight gain. I lose a pound a week. I just thought I would lose more. It is raining a lot and I can't get out as much as I want. I am trying to motivate myself but it is difficult.

    Sleeved Twice??

Yes. Your sleeve may have streched. But your having weight gain because your eating too much. Many people can have a bigger sleeve without filling it. I'm not sure if you understand what I'm saying 61lbs and don't eat anything doesn't add up . So if your sleeve stretched you put food in it to stretch it. If you gained 61lbs and have no other health issues were did it come from if you didn't eat ? I'm not judging you but we have to take responsibility or we can't make changes. So if you can be honest to say what you ate to gain 61lbs. Perhaps someone can even help you with food ideas to swap to help you lose again. If you continue to say you eat nothing. When your sleeve has stretched and you gain 61lbs.. then how can someone help ? We all may slip up without noticing. And you may have another surgery but we still have to be mindful or it will stretch again But goodluck anyway Edit sorry I just noticed your not the original poster lol I thought you were replying to me because you were ! Did I Stretch My Stomatch?

Check with your Dr. to see if you need a "stretched sleeve" revision surgery. Its rare. 19 pounds in a week is a medical concern. Normal for the sleeve to expand with thime. It's not "stretched" this is the progression out from surgery. The restriction is still there. After surgery your restriction is tight. The restriction will change. How much you can hold years out will be different for each of us. Surgery few oz Might get 600+ calories first few months 4 oz five months to a year 6 oz to 8 oz 1200+ calories One year out half a plate. five to ten years a full plate "Grazing" is usually the cause of weight gain. You have a new point of volume and sensation of full. If you eat high calories throughout each day . (calories can be combination of good and bad food choices) It's the same effect as if you didn't have surgery. An excess of 500 calories will cause you to gain weight. Medical professional explanation on misuse of the term "stretched sleeve" to back this up below: Dr. Matthew Weiner Published on Mar 16, 2015 "Stomach Stretching" is the term used by many weight loss (Bariatric) surgery patients to explain the changes in their appetite and food consumption after surgery. Dr. Weiner explains what's really happening and how to prevent it.
