    Aetna Help!

So now I am aggravated. After being told by the nutritionist that me gaining weight wouldn't matter with Aetna apparently it matters. My file was submitted to insurance today and the lady who submitted it called to tell me there was a 90% chance that I would be denied because Aetna has been very anal weight gain. I wish they would have told me this 4 months ago when I started this all. January 19th I will no longer be covered by my parents insurance so it's kind of a countdown to try and get this done. I guess all I can do is pray for the best but I really wish I would have known about this months ago. What was excitement that my papers had been submitted is not dread and anxiousness.

    psych evaluation

I totally agree with missbliss. The eval is basically non-eventful. They just ask questions about why you're doing it, have you always been heavy or what prompted your weight gain, are you dealing with any emotional instability in your life etc. My doc sent me the MMPI ahead of time and had me bring in the completed test. He also said that the test was originally designed for general mental health evals so a lot of the questions seemed completely un-related. My favorite was: true or false, "sometimes, I feel like swearing." My roommate and I still giggle over that one. Don't worry over it and be honest about your goals and dedication. Good luck!
  3. I had my husband tie my shoes, but we walked the neighborhood because Dr. said no to the treadmill. Perfectly normal to have weight gain after surgery. They pump you full of fluids. Every thing else seems normal. I ended up taking some Miralax in order to get the bowels moving.
  4. Hello Everyone. I just wanted to drop by and introduce myself. I got banded almost three years ago on 9/29/08. Since then I only lost about 30lbs of which I have gained back PLUS SOME. I haven't experienced any problems with my band and at times it seems like I don't even have one. I am able to eat the same things as before being banded. (With the exception of potatoes..they are they only foods that act like they want to get stuck). Right now, I am filled with about 4 or 5ccs. I got frustrated with the weight gain after being filled, so I stopped going to my doctor visits. I felt like I was wasting money on something that wasn't working. Lately, I've been thinking that I gave up too soon. Today I made up my mind to "start over" on the pre-op and post-op diets to try and trick my body into losing some of this weight. At this point, I don't know what else to do. Perhaps I just haven't had my "right fit" yet. I'll look into possibly getting an increase in my fills. If it doesn't work, then maybe I just need to have the thing removed and the gastric done. Previously I didn't qualify for it because I didn't weigh enough, but by golly I betcha I do now.
  5. Do you know what she eats? I don't think she mentioned it actually. Any number of things could cause weight gain that has absolutely nothing to do with eating. I was put on thyroid medicine a year ago and started gaining - it was only 5 pounds but still it was in a short amount of time with absolutely no change in my normal healthy low carb eating
  6. I saw Al Roker on another T.V. show (Not The Today show )He admitted to a weight gain of 20 pounds and he was working out with Oprah's personal trainer.....But I saw him this AM on the Today Show in a wet suit and bless his heart he looks like is struggling with more tha a 20 pound gain :-( I also noticed as he was walking he has a much more pronounced limp again. He had a hip replacement about 5 yrs ago and the extra weight is putting a real strain on that new hip ! It just proves that the Gastric Bypass is not sure proof either. I have a friend who is going to Jenny Craig again after having the G.B. and losing 120 lbs she kept it off for 4 yrs and it just started creeping back on as she was able to return to her old eating habits. She has gained about 80 lbs back and is very depressed ! She is NOW asking her surgeon for the Lap Band but he says it is not possible. Just my 2 cents, Joanne
  7. I am a little more than a year out from my gastric sleeve an initially lost around 75 lbs. I recently started back on my antidepressant and seem to crave carbs. I have put back on about 20 lbs and really need to get my snacking under control. In the past being on antidepressants was a major cause of my weight gain and I am trying to tame the carb monster since I started back on the meds. Any suggestions besides getting back to religiously tracking calories. I still work out about 4 days a week. I think focusing on my protein intake may help with the carb cravings but I thought I would see if others have any recommendations. Sent from my SM-G998U using BariatricPal mobile app
  8. Every body and skin is different don't rely on these pics for what your gonna look like. Start exercise early on and don't stop!!! Cardio AND lifting weights. My chest ,stomach definitely need surgery from pregnancy and weight gain . My arms might be OK I'm working then at the gym!!! My lower body looks ok so far. My highest weight was 300 I have lost 94 so far and still have 46 more to loose. So I'm not sure how im gonna look by then . My plan is to be happy with the weight-loss and ride it out till I get enough money to get surgery to fix my body. I would trade being fat and depressed for the skin in a heart beat. stay positive

    Manage Sleep Apnea

I was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea during pre op testing and was worried that would delay my surgery date since the tech told me they want to get it under control before I undergo surgery. Fortunately, my surgeon said it wouldn't make a difference and that the RNY would more than likely resolve it, which I'm hoping it does. Now I'm wondering if I should have gone ahead and got the machine since my out-of-pocket expenses have been met for the year. But I'm trying to be optimistic and believe I'm not going to need it in the future and hope the same for you. Anyone here can say their apnea was cured following surgery/weight loss? Oh, and I ran across this article after my diagnosis. Yikes!!! Just another reason to get the Bariatric surgery. 10. I'm only 25 years old and preparing to have surgery (self-paid... have been saving up for YEARS as my insurance does not cover it) in September. I WISH with all of my heart that I could have had it done when I was around 19. That would have prevented so much weight gain for me and kept me so much healthier. However, at 15 and 17 there is NO WAY I was ready. I was still living at home with mom and dad and not responsible for my own actions in the capacity that I am today.

    Marchies in June

Hello to you all...I had my banding on March 28th-2007.(St. Francis Bariactric Center of Memphis, TN) I am so glad to have lost just past 33 plus. I need to check my weight, but I am superstitous about doing it every week. Anyway--I am so glad this banding can stop and make me think. I have never ever eaten fish 5 days in a row. I found myself in the fish market buying not 5--but 25 fish. They were small and meal size. Maybe the guy was waiting on me to buy the 13 catfish and 12 drum fish. Right at $22...It was a deal. I have a deep freezer holding all of this. This week--5 meals--fish and veggies--one day--fish and mac and cheese. I told my Doctor that I wanted to boost my weekly weight loss to just over 2.5 to 2.66...She said--maybe that is possible. I got 2 fills so far and this fill seems to be doing the trick. That is 1.6 cc's of water...Not bad. I do have one problem--my appetite is so tough to take in the morning--it's almost zero. My energy level is "Off the Chain". I mean--I may have to cut back on the anti-depressives. Wellbutrin is known to be a zero weight gain for the appetite and many times--make you lose weight. I will ask my Dr on the next visit about cutting back to a lower dose--since my sleep issues are back. Too much energy. Yesterday(6-30-07) I washed dishes--which is normal. I mopped all of my floors at night since I could not sleep. I found myself re-arranging my bedroom at 1:30 am--could not sleep. Then I mopped the kitchen again. Saying to myself.."Oh--I missed that corner"... This type of energy was never in my body before. I can recall when I had this energy last--when I was in the Army and i was around 27 years old. Most nights when I can't sleep--I am laying on the couch watching TV all night. Thank God--my little 2 bedroom apartment is looking great....hahahahaha...Can't wait to get back to the Gym in August....

  15. @@Hey Man Losing weight is such a SMALL part of WLS. It's actually the EASY part. We get very short sighted as newly sleeved or bypassed patients. It's all about the scale, how fast we are losing, stressing about stalls or small fluctuations in out weight. But the main thing we should be focusing on is how we can change our eating habits enough to keep the weight we lost off and live a healthy, happy life. At almost 2 years out, I can eat SO MUCH MORE than I could even a year out. I find myself over eating frequently, and have to actually force myself to weigh and measure most of the time to prevent it. I feel almost like I didn't have surgery at times. ESPECIALLY when it comes to snacking. I have to be very mindful. This is the reason I am choosing to eat edamame instead of chips for a snack, or eat a chocolate Greek yogurt as opposed to a cookie or two or three (because that's what it will end up being) I couldn't utilize moderation before surgery, so what makes me think it will work for me now that I feel like I can eat almost normal amounts of food? It won't. If I did a cookie here and a few chips there, I guarantee it won't stop there because I don't have my precious restriction and lack of hunger to count on anymore. That leads to weight gain. Ask anyone who has gained weight back, they will be the first ones to admit it. Like I said, it's not the amount of food that makes us successful, it's ultimately what we choose to eat that does when the honeymoon is over.

    My BEAUTIFUL band baby!

Daisydoodle, congratulation on your precious baby. She is so beautiful. I couldn't believe when I read that you only gained 22 lbs! I've never heard of so little weight gain. The doctors never worried or told you, you needed to gain more? Also, you lsot it all but 3 lbs after giving birth. You are so luck and my new hero!! I hope I have such happy, healthy pregnancy and as little weight gain when I am pregnant:-) K

    My BEAUTIFUL band baby!

Oh, WOW. She is absolutely beautiful! And you are too, for just giving birth. You don't even want to see what mine look like. I came out looking dazed and confused with frizzy hair and NO eyebrows. You're weight gain is an inspiration to people like me who plan to have more children. You really didn't gain much. Congratulations on your little angel:).
  19. I am losing slower, surgery on May 2nd at 218 and down to 193 today. I have PCOS and was on metformin for 12 years prior to surgery. I have a history of low progesterone levels. I even had to supplement the first trimester of my pregnancy in order to not have a miscarriage. It just dawned on me a couple days ago that I probably need to go back to using a little bit of progesterone cream daily in order to keep my hormones in check. Since I began doing this I’ve lost a pound each day. Keep in mind it’s only been two days, so I will continue monitoring the effectiveness of the progesterone cream. Some people it causes weight gain but if you really do have low progesterone and use just a little bit it will help keep you in balance and allow for better weight loss. Hopefully this is going to continue as I use just a little bit each day. Just thought I would share.

Tips on breaking the sugar addiction

This is the approach that I use: I strictly avoid processed sugars. I have a sweet tooth and that is one of the major causes that contributed to my weight gain over my lifetime. I limit myself to artificial sweeteners (such as Splenda and sugar alcohols), to natural low calorie sweeteners (such as Stevia) and to the natural sugars found in fruits and milk. I had diabetes. That went into remission when I left the hospital two days after surgery and I have not taken any diabetic medicine ever since and my blood sugar levels are good. I test my blood sugar levels periodically. [Currently over 5 years post-op] I read the labels of all food that I consume. I look at the grams of sugar per serving. If it is above 5 grams, I look at the ingredients. The ingredients are listed in order by highest percentage, and if the first 5 ingredients contain processed sugar (in any of its many forms), then I avoid this food, like a plague. I also restrict myself to about one meal per day containing complex carbohydrates (such as pasta and bread). I also avoid all carbonated beverages. I lost 20 pounds pre-op solely on eliminating carbonated beverages from my diet and I will not go back.

    Pre op weight gain

I gained 4 pounds at my last diet visit (still 3 pounds down overall at that point). I asked my surgeon to tell me honestly what she thought about my weight. She said she would say 2 things - 1 on the record and 1 off the record. The off-the-record response was that as an experienced surgeon she did not feel pre-op weight loss was always correlated with success afterward because pre-op we are still struggling and fighting against the hormones and the screaming hunger monkey on our backs along with all the anxiety of making this huge decision to have WLS and saying good-bye to certain foods and that lifestyle forever. The radical changes in hormones and hunger levels after surgery are the tool we use to lose weight combined with willpower - whereas before surgery we ONLY have willpower at our disposal. The on-the-record response was that she wasn't happy about the weight gain, and I needed to be extremely focused during the remaining pre-op period. She said I was still down overall which is an accomplishment because many patients struggle not to continue gaining. However despite that, she counseled me to strive to lose as much weight as possible because the smaller your belly at surgery the safer it would be. That was a month ago today and I've lost 13 pounds since then. I think she truly understood how I felt and both answers were what I needed to hear - that yes, it's hard to lose weight pre-op and don't beat yourself up, but also don't get complacent and strive every day to make good choices for yourself and your safety. That mix of answers worked for me! As far as insurance and whatnot, I was 367 on my consult day and 364 my last diet visit. They submitted the paperwork 12/18 and I was approved 12/22. So, no issue. Take it as a sign you need to be more focused, but don't go crazy with anxiety about it.
  22. There are a few reasons you are feeling tired without any reason. One of them is anemia, which is a lack of red blood cells and conversely, oxygen from the lungs is not properly brought to the tissues and cells. Anemia may be caused by deficiency of vitamins or minerals, internal bleeding or chronic diseases. Women who are at “that time” of the month are susceptible to anemia as blood is lost during menstruation. Still, iron deficiency due to menstruation is less than in pregnant women or lactating mothers, as their body needs extra iron to maintain healthy blood levels. Things may also go wrong when your thyroid glands refuse to cooperate with you. Thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) are responsible for metabolic processes in the body. Too much thyroid hormone causes hyperthyroidism which speeds up metabolism while too little thyroid hormone slows down metabolism. Hyperthyroidism causes fatigue and muscle weakness and starts in the thighs. Doing energy demanding activities become difficult and other symptoms include weight loss, feeling warm, shorter menstruations, increased heart rate and thirst. Hypothyroidism also causes fatigue and muscle weakness. The symptoms are reversed to hyperthyroidism such as weight gain, feeling cold and longer menstruations. Diabetes, notorious for causing a range of problems in the body, is also related to fatigue. As glucose is the staple fuel of the body, it is not utilized properly in patients with type 2 diabetes as the absence of insulin causes the glucose to build up in the body. Without its staple fuel, the tissues of the body are not nourished properly and causes fatigue. Sadly, being sad can also be the reason you feel tired. Depression induces negative feelings and also has negative effects on the body as it causes a reduction in energy levels, changes in sleep and eating patterns, decreased concentration and overall laziness and worthlessness which keeps you in bed all day. 23. My anxiety is at an all time at the moment. My surgery date isnt until October 30th and I start my liquid diet October 16th. I'm not stressing about the surgery but the weigh in with my Surgeon. She wants to do a weigh in on Tuesday October 17th but the probably is I gained 15 lbs!!! I gained all that weight in 5 days. There are a lot of factors... 1) I didn't drink any water for 3-4 days 2) My period has been on and off for 2 weeks because the birth control in my arm was expiring so I got a new one put back in 3) stressed 4) lack of sleep and have been sleeping late. I know you can gain some weight from water retention, being on your menstrual and being stressed out but 15 pounds?! This is really bad timing. If im not the same weight or have lost anything that means my surgery will be postponed and that isn't an option for me. I plan on starting my liquid diet a little bit in advanced ( Sunday 10/15 ) This has to be all water weight but i don't know if it's possible to lose 15 pounds in 3 days. This is all just bad timing

    Gaining too much

My dr told me at first appt I was allowed a 25lb gain for entire pregnancy. I have lost 27lbs and am almost 34 wks. He is experienced with weight loss surgery patients and diabetic patients. Idk why she would say no weight gain at all. Even my ob dr from my son 11yrs ago told me 20-30lbs was normal. With him I gained 57lbs and he never got mad about it even when I asked what to do to lose some he said worry about it after the baby is born. Idk every dr is different but I don't agree with no weight gain.

    Weekly Weigh In

I literally have decided just to not care anymore. I am up 24 pounds in 21 weeks. The amount of food I can eat is astonishing. I really wouldn't eat that much, but I am forever hungry! I am glad I had the sleeve! I would have gained 100 being pregnant. I am going to try to at least go back to low carbing it because the carbs are really what triggers the sweet craving and wanting more carbs. I have to eat carbs, but if i can just make carbs the last meal of the day. I will try that tomorrow. I just eat what I can get my hands on, and I am not making smart choices. I eat from sun up to sun down. I just had a big plate of spaghetti. I shouldn't have chosen that. I was going to do chicken salad with fruit, but I saw the pasta and it sounded good. I am on the way to 50 or 60 pound weight gain. I hope hope hope hope hope hope hope the hunger goes away after baby. It is really overwhelming. I dream about food. I love food. I want food. If I don't get it...watch out!
