    May 28 - 31st sleevers?

My surgeon just required high Protein, low carb for two weeks before surgery. It's been ok. I've lost about 8 pounds so far. I'm a vegetarian though, so my carbs haven't been as low as some people might be able to get them, but I've been average 54g of carbs a day (18g of which are fiber) and 95g of protein, so not too bad I think. Mostly I'm looking forward to being more physical, but also to the clothes! I'm skeptical that I'll ever be able to wear "normal" boots though, since my calves are a bit disproportionally large and very dense. In the past when I lost weight, they were slowest to change, and even at a size 12, I couldn't wear boots without laces. So, we'll see.
  3. Day 8 of my 30 Day Vegetarian Challenge. Seriously, I am loving this way of eating. Plus I've lost 5 pounds in a week and I'm eating all the time. High quality, protein rich veggie based food.

    Reactive Hypoglycemia

Hi I've just been searching for this topic as I've recently realised I have just started showing symptoms of Reactive Hyplogylcemia. I'm exactly one year post-op sleeve surgery and I had no idea us sleevers could suffer these symptoms. I'm a vegetarian so trying to cut out carbs has been a huge challenge for me and must admit that recently they have come back into my diet and my weightloss has also stalled. I now find that if I try and exercise in the mornings I have a massive hypo attack, the shakes, sweating, low blood sugar, feel like I'm going to faint, need to sit down and then an urgency to eat something. I then continue to feel terrible for the rest of the day like I'm all washed out and very tired even though I've done almost nothing. This is a very worrying new complication of the sleeve surgery that I did not sign up for and I'm trying to find out as much as possible about the condition so I can learn how to manage it. I'm confused as to whether I need to cut the carbs or increase them? I've been eating about 1,000 calories a day but burning around 2,700 cals per day (I wear a BodyMedia monitor so I know exactly what I'm using). I'm now really worried about this new development.. I'm seeing my surgeon next week for my one year review, I will be asking about this as from what I've researched, it seems as though there are a lot of people post bariatric surgery complaining of the problem and not much can be done from what I know??. Mine so far has been manageable but I am very worried it might get worse and I've read some people having their Pancreases removed which seems very extreme!. Any help or advice would be gratefully received. Prior to surgery I had PCOS, under-active thyroid and had been told years ago that I was insulin resistent but I never had diabetes. I must say, had I known about this complication it would have made me consider very carefully whether I should do this? Please has anyone any advice as it is worrying me a lot??

Another vegetarian here. I drink one protein shake a day which is makes for 45 grams of protein. The rest I get from cauliflower, broccoli, tofu, eggs and cheese. I haven't had any problems.

Congrats, keep your goal in sight. I changed my goal weight to 205 after reaching my doc's goal for me of 235. Now I'm 223.

  10. Is your surgeon by chance a vegetarian? This just seems odd. There is such a small amount of protein found in most vegetables. You would have to consume A LOT of vegetables. I mean A LOT to make up the protein levels found in animal protein. And while I haven't done the research on whey and other vegetable based Proteins, I still wonder if they are complete proteins.

Adequate food intake at 2 years study

It bothers me how little people check into this stuff. Its heart warming to see those who did. Yes, that is dead on - some of us need different types of supplementation. Having a dairy issue, and a few other things, I need something different than what some of the others I've seen get. The problem comes in the ability to get doctors to test per person and not just some standard lab panel, not just the regular stuff. I've had high copper levels before and borderline high. That would make 0 sense given my eating. Deficiencies are common but not high ones. That's why testing and supplementation should truly be unique and not blanket. As the above shows, I think people can get in their food but again, its WHAT they get in that makes a difference. I eat more fresh veggies, fruit, and lean Proteins than the vegetarians I know. However, the large combo of problems and the specific problems I have gives me a greater risk for some things. The other item that hasn't been thrown out here is our athletic endeavors. Now that I'm sidelined, I don't need to eat certain things, do certain things, because of that. Those who do, need extra help.
  12. Oh, also, my surgeon knows I'm a vegetarian and sees no problem with it. He agrees though that it's best not to go fully vegan until I'm done losing.
  13. I'm on my pre-op low carb diet, and I'm doing ok vegetarian. My plan right now is to do vegetarian until I get to maintenance and then go back to vegan. I'm pretty committed to adding unflavored Protein powder to a lot of things. Today I ate a total of 1200 calories and got 106g of protein. I had one Protein shake, two tofurky sausages, and a salad with a homemade fat-free quark/lemon juice dressing. I'm certainly not at 0 carbs, but I'm doing a lot better than normal, when I usually ate a lot of bulgar, rice, etc. Post-op, I know I'll be eating less though, so, like I said, I plan to use a lot more unflavored Protein Powder to boost the protein in things like lentil Soup or refried Beans. Also, today I came across a vegan pumpkin seed protein powder. I'm just not sure if on it's own it's a complete protein, but it looks interesting and like it would be good with savory dishes! If you ever wanna swap vegetarian/vegan recipes, just let me know!
  14. Has anyone here done this and been successful at it? If so, can we hear your story? I'm fascinated. Alan

    Long term supplementation

Here is where there is a problem I see with bariatric patients, that I think is totally correct from Michigan chic. Some of us do NOT need the supplementation based on WHAT you eat. I eat healthier than pretty much most vegetarians I know as pasta's and rices figure heavily in their diet. I use Vega, which tends to work better for me vs. pills. I have had all my levels tested and they are good. Each body is different. The problem I found was that my former surgeon only wanted to test his list, not what might be a problem for me. Another reason to find someone who is willing to be flexible as you are an individual person and not some cookie cutter "this is what everyone checks for, standard pat list, cattle call" type of thing.

    Long term supplementation

My b12 and D were low, they are now ok with suplimentation. B12 is an even bigger problem if you are a vegetarian. Calcium levels are not always represented well by the test... it is looking like some long term problems(bone loss) can show up with good blood levels. There is more and more research that shows supplementation may not work that well... whole food is your best bet when ever possible. (I try and do both...)

    No energy, I am exhausted!

Forgot to mention, I am vegetarian BUT I am eating fish, eggs and dairy. Yes, I have been exhausted since surgery, I am not anemic.

i was asking cause, there are many vegetarian sources of protein you can eat... there is tofu, tempeh, seitan, beans, lentils.... but why you dont eat those other foods might indicate what else you might or might not eat.

There are many vegetarians who are successful sleevers so you can definitely make this work, especially as you eat chicken. There are tons of chicken products for variety, ground, chicken sausage, turkey Jerky and bacon if you eat other poultry, etc. Your job will be to find Protein rich foods you love. Nuts, Beans, turkey, pork?, tofu, cheese?... I urge you to explore fish or crab, because you never know.. You'll be fine with a little more effort than the average meat eater.

Anita, I'm also not a big red meat person although it's supposed to be harder to eat after surgery. As far as eggs and dairy, do you not like the taste? I've never been a huge fan of greek yogurt but post-surgery I love it. I'm also eating a lot of legumes. I make salads with different types of Beans and then add other veggies for flavor. In additional to chicken I'm also eating turkey and ham. You should look for a recipe books for either WLS or vegetarians, also search recipes above for options. I'm sure you'll do fine and who knows, maybe your taste buds will change after surgery, many peoples do.

How was your 5:2 day today?

Being a vegetarian... I would have to say yes. some days not.... not sure what does it! I need to go through the underware again for sure! I remember seeing a study that showed a chart where gurd and weight gain went hand in hand after three years...not for everyone.

    so tired and weak

I make sure I get about 70-90 grams of protein a day. A lot of protein shakes. I'm a vegetarian so I'm challenged! I feel so tired daily and I wonder if I'm missing something? I think I will go to the doctor and have my labs ran. Any suggestions? Oh I'm 2.5 weeks post op. I wonder if its hypoglycemic?
