September surgery buddies!!
UTgal replied to Slwhurst's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A DS is the Duodenal Switch. This is the surgery they do as the second stage of a sleeve or can be done by itself. Research has shown it to have the most weight loss of bariatric surgeries and usually the least regain. I hope this helps -
Gall Bladder problems After VSG?
Notyourauntie replied to Crisscat's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My bariatric surg was 8/8/22 5’6 highest weight after 4 kids (2,4,7,9) and a challenging relationship with their dad for 14 years. Down maybe 30lbs by now. When I was told on 9/12 I had a 26lb weight loss and told my GB had a stone so 10/3 is my surgery. It came to surface bc my pcp needed a f/up mri from a pancreatic cyst and Found excess Fluid in my stomachs. my surgeon said normal but not my gallbladder even the cyst is normal. Worse part is my mother and auntie both very judge mental and critical told me to pray. My mom said “People Get addicted to Surgery, not bc you feel better Eventually but bc the anesthesia😳😒) this being a Med necessity! But I’m so tired of the non support I’d honestly threw in the towel recently. -
The other I forget to mention is I use diet ocean spray, and I mix it with vital protein powder. This helps with hunger and feeling full. I will also use fiber mix from Bariatric Advantage, haven’t tried any other brand. The fiber I mix with water and drink it fast cause it doesn’t dissolve. I also make to take gasx and I take a dose of miralax everyday to avoid gas and constipation.

Had endoscopy before my symptoms got worst. I don't have infection, no fever, last blood work a month ago white blood cells not elevated. Saw bariatric surgent recommended scan of stomach & chest. That is where I'm at now. I appreciate the feedback. When you are experiencing serious chronic pain suddenly, I want to get to root of the problem and not mask it with PT, or pain meds. So I'm doing all I can think of on my part to find out what is going on. So, again thank you for your feedback its very much appreciated.

Celebrations after Surgery
LookingForward22 replied to KimA-GA's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Only my kids, husband and two friends know I’ve had bariatric surgery. Everyone else knows that I have had hernia surgery and if anyone asks about my food or weightloss I tell them I’m working with a nutritionist. Most people don’t ask beyond that - but of course sometimes closer family does (my siblings). I explained to them I was having issues with my liver being enlarged so to try to address that I’m making some changes and working with a nutrition. All of those details are true, I just haven’t shared the surgery with anyone that doesn’t have a need to know. So far there has been no issue or questions. I can address most things through either the hernia surgery or nutritionist. I imagine as I loose more and it becomes more noticeable I will hear “what’s your secrete” but again - I’ll tell the truth …. But maybe not the whole truth (depends on who’s asking and what their motives are). -
insurance frustration
FireWife81 replied to KimA-GA's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Why was paperwork submitted to insurance that doesn't cover bariatric surgery? I have two insurances as well. Primary covers bariatric surgery but secondary doesn't. My doctor's office said that they won't even submit bariatric procedure to secondary, only procedures and office visits that can fall under other parameters. -
insurance frustration
summerseeker replied to KimA-GA's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh yes but not via insurance. I had to pay for my surgery in a private hospital as everywhere in the UK was swamped with Covid cases and all surgeries were put back and non essential surgery was stopped altogether. The hospital had its bariatric services audited and the surgeon then had a holiday which all put my surgery back at least 2 months. For a few weeks I felt like I was unjustly punished, the ' why me ' syndrome kicked in. I was so upset. Then I got over it, what else can you do ? The days dragged by and then I was into the 3 week pre op diet so they dragged even more but I got there in the end. If your part of the world is into winter when you have the surgery, be ready, You may feel really cold, I did. Even in the house I needed lots of layers. I hope you get it sorted soon -

Recommendations for surgeons near Austin, TX?
Austin22 replied to heartofmercury's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Hi! I just moved to Austin are and had bypass surgery 3 years ago. I went from 300 to 168 - best decision ever! I am looking for a bariatric center in Austin area for my yearly check up -is there one you recommend? Thanks:) -
If bariatric surgery is specifically excluded in the insurance plan then there really is no way. I have Florida blue and its specifically excluded here in Florida. I ended up paying cash
-
I have heard that it is difficult to say the least if there is an exclusion to the policy.. most people self pay in that case.. (and fyi school employees in Georgia have bariatric surgery covered now.. I have GA teachers insurance via my husband who is a district employee)

I was going to reply, but @Nepenthe44 hit all the points I intended to mention. For the record, I'm not carb averse, it's just that carbs do nothing to help avoid excess muscle catabolism. Sufficient protein is what you need to help keep you from losing too much muscle mass. That's one of the primary reasons all post bariatric surgery diets emphasize a protein forward approach.

BED and psych clearance
KimA-GA replied to Nepenthe44's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i have BED but made big strides before the bariatric surgery process started and eve tho I am still in a new reality my psych eval wasn’t too concerned. I strongly suggest no matter what you look into why you binge with a therapist or in another therapeutic manner BEFORE surgery. I had circumstances come together which made me able to face my demons and am now better for it. BED goes so far beyond food. Food is only a symptom, not the real problem. feel free to reach out anytime in PM or on here (anyone/everyone) anytime! -
sigh.. I should not complain, but yep I am… I am in limbo and cannot get a date for surgery yet because I have two insurances; one that does not cover bariatric a at all and one that does. I just had to get my denial letter to the surgeon because they can’t seem to get a copy. Now it’s time to wait for approval in round two (the one with coverage). My surgeon had October 5/6 as surgery in the first request but with the (what should have been expected) delay it could be the end of october or november … It just is less than ideal timing for my work and everything else (tho being on alternative diet for holidays doesn’t bother me so far, because i will eat different no matter what happens). Maybe I am just being impatient and standing under a little black rain cloud of my own making … but the frustration is real to me! anyone else experienced similar?

First " vehemently" word of the day! I had to look it up, so I learned a new word today. Thanks! Second: I couldn't stand the chewable in any form. Luckily my team approved me for capsules very early on. I take these and so far so good with blood work. Much cheaper than bariatric fusion too. Amazon, $30 for 3 months worth.

+1 on this. My team is also vehemently against patches. I started taking the Bariatric Fusion one-a-day capsules and tolerate them well, but always looking for more options.

Does anyone have experience getting cleared for surgery with a recent history of binge eating disorder? Or know what the official definition of remission is? My bariatric program reached out to my psychiatrist, who apparently said I'm not a candidate for WLS because of a history of BED that's in "partial remission". During our last meeting a few months ago, I was still having small binges about once a week. Since then, I binge less than once a week (a BED diagnosis requires binging at least once a week for at least 3 months) and my binges are getting smaller and smaller over time. I haven't received any notice from my bariatric program or my psychiatrist (I found this out by reading a chart note about the phone call between the two), so I'm not really sure what I should be doing. (Other than the obvious of not binging and continuing to work on my diet and exercise behaviors, like I was doing anyway.)

I would look up advice for bariatric athletes online. There's a few dietitians out there who are working with post-surgery athletes and some of them write articles and blogs, but the field is very, very new. Most bariatric dietitians are not going to have the knowledge to guide you if you are exercising seriously and most sport dietitians don't have the knowledge to work around your restrictions and different macro needs during the active weight loss phase and beyond. (And even at the intersection, most of the writing I've seen focuses on athletes after the initial weight loss period.) And I don't fault them for that entirely. Bariatric dietitians are focused on patient populations assumed to be only begrudgingly if at all active and sport dietitians are focused on patients who have no history of morbid obesity so... what can you do. Don't worry about not getting enough carbs and losing muscle though. It's protein that you need to build muscle and it a lack of protein will cause your body to break down muscle. Carbs are for immediately accessible energy during workouts and Crossfit workouts are not long enough to require any additional carbs like a marathoner might need. You will be able to work from what your body has available, which it can convert from fat (from diet or from your excess weight). I would go relatively low-carb per your program's recommendation and notice how you feel during workouts. If you're hitting the wall much earlier than you have in the past (accounting for the fact that you've just gone through major surgery and probably taken significant time off), then maybe try adding a small amount of complex carbohydrate before your workout (something like berries or oatmeal, not something high in sugar natural or otherwise) or switch around the timing of when you eat your carbs and see whether that improves your workouts. Crossfit folks generally recommend a low-carb diet anyway. Disclaimer: I'm not a dietitian, I'm just a Crossfitter who was very concerned about this at the beginning of my surgery process and did a lot of research. I haven't had surgery yet, so I can't give my personal experience.

Sounds like your plan is like mine and the short answer is no. At first you are just focused on staying hydrated. The number one reason for hospital readmission post bariatric surgery is dehydration. -
Bariatric friendly alcoholic drinks?
kcuster83 replied to DaisyAndSunshine's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I have drank 2 times since surgery. First time I had 4 shots over 5 hours and it was weird, I actually made a post about it. The first shot hit me hard and quick but then passed quick and nothing else really eventful through the night. Was kind of a waste of calories. BUT! The second time I drank I was **** faced and passed out in the bathroom by 10pm. It was crazy. I made "skinny margaritas", to keep it as you say bariatric friendly. My recipe is : 24oz cup filled with ice, half shot of pure lime juice, half shot of pure lemon juice, 2 shots of tequila and 3 splenda packets. The only sugar and calories are in the alcohol. I don't know why I got so trashed on these and not the shots though, so BE WARE when drinking. -
Thank you Bariatric Guru, I hope I can inspire anyone who is having trouble coming to grips with this food habit. As we age, it is so important to take care of our excessive food intake. It just isn't worth it. One of my best recommendations it to keep busy and interested in everything around us. Volunteer where it gives you a feeling of self worth, join groups and communicate with family and friends. Keep busy and don't get the habit of laying around as you do get older. Good nutritional values will save you money in the long time.

Oh no! Which Bariatric Advantage multis did you get? I hate sweet things but the strawberry watermelon (no iron) isn't that bad. The texture is a little gritty though. I do have to take my time eating it though, I think it may take me at least 2 mins to eat one chew. I also have Bariatric Advantage Calcium Citrate, raspberry flavor, that one's actually kind of nice lol. I'm also taking Nordic Naturals vitamin D3 gummy in passion fruit, and I actually look forward to it each day. The last thing my plan has me on is a B12 spray, I'm doing the one by Garden of Life in raspberry flavor, it's okay for a medicinal liquid lol could be better, could be way worse. -
Bariatric friendly alcoholic drinks?
The Greater Fool replied to DaisyAndSunshine's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Personally, I'm don't care about "bariatric friendly" when I drink. Alcohol is not on my plan which is another reason I'm not looking at how it will impact my weight. My first consideration is not to drink often. Anything not on my plan I don't do often. Just my plan for off plan adventures. Next, I dump on sugar so I must be careful to I avoid fruit juices and sugared mixers such as cola. Amazingly enough, dumping takes the pleasure out of just about anything. Be sure whatever you do works for you. Do test run's at home because the effects of alcohol often hits GB patients quicker and harder than normal and also passes quicker, which could be precarious in public. Good luck, Tek -
Hey guys, so I am 10 months post-Op and I used to be a social drinker. I do wanna introduce alcohol socially only during dates and other outings. Ofc I know I'll have to be cautious and what not and that I will be, so question is what alcoholic drinks are more favorable for bariatric patients? Form your experience, which ones did you try incorporating? Something that's low sugar and less calories? Red wine, white wine?

Hi. New here too. First post and everything. Sad I'm only finding this now but glad to be here. 2 weeks from today is the big day! Getting very excited. I started the liquid diet a little early because I am stubborn and I wanted to trick myself into thinking it's all my idea. HAHA First day or 2 was brutal... it's getting easier (besides the headache). Best of luck to the Bariatric Pal class of Sept 2022!
