    Hey March surgery folks

Not sure how picky of an eater you may be, but are you at the hummus stage? Also, I was getting sooooo sick of sweet stuff that I made a non-fat strained version of tsaziki yogurt to satisfy my need for savory and it was really good. Maybe thinned out turkey chili? Again not sure where you are in your surgeon’s food stage intros nut sure this helps! wishing you much success! Feel good!

    Hungry hungry hungry

Today I upped my protein . I had half of premier protein with some Greek yogurt and made a shake and I was pretty full off that and then I had some salmon with avocado. I think the shake helped to cut down some of the hungry. I’m new to this and figuring it out as well. Have you tried that ?

    February 2021 bypassers?

Where did everyone go? I hope everyone is doing well. I'm 8 weeks out at this point down 30lbs. I had a few stalls but just checked my diet and got back on track with protein and water intake and a few more walks. I got Covid as well and was not feeling well for a week thankfully it was pretty mild. I went for a couple of 1 mile runs for the first time since surgery this week as well. Feeling good and looking good. I'm still craving bad foods especially at night. I tried to fast from 8pm -8 am and that lasted a day to try to keep from snacking. So I'm just trying to have better snacks than my go to chips. Greek Yogurt or apple and peanut butter or the jello sugar free pudding cups. But definitely craving salt and crunch.

    Hungry

I’m going to try this in the morning with my protein shake and yogurt as I wake up and then an egg with avocado for breakfast and try to finish my protein/ yogurt combo throughout the day and see if it makes a difference along with maybe tuna and pumpkin for dinner and another meal if possible.

    Lie on food log

I am in maintenance and I do have a sweet treat occasionally. As long as I get right back on plan, I haven't found it to be a problem. Like you, it's not realistic to think I will NEVER again have a sugar-sweetened dessert. That being said, I was more strict during my pre-op diet. At that time I didn't eat off plan (although I did break down and eat yogurt when I was supposed to be on liquids only for 10 days). It's not the end of the world, but try to stick to the pre-op diet as good pre-op dietary adherence has been found to correlate with good weight loss outcomes. Don't beat yourself up, just try to start over.

    High protein low carb recipes

Last night I was on a support group meeting (I'm pre-op) and they were talking about "banana protein pancakes". 1 banana, 1 egg, 1 scoop of protein powder mashed in a bowl then cooked like a pancake (apparently it also works in a waffle maker, but I don't have one). It makes two pancakes, they said. I'd never made pancakes before (yeah, I am normally a pretty good cook, but I'm not a breakfast person). I tried it this morning and it was pretty good, except that I cooked it at too high a temperature and the outside got a little too brown. I would recommend cooking on medium. I just made one big pancake because my pan is too small to separate it into two different pancakes. I didn't have an egg so I used 1/4 cup egg whites. I usually would eat pancakes with maple syrup, but that defeats the "low carb" so I used a little light cool whip. I know one woman in the support group used butter; I might try that if I make them again. I tend to make normal meals but don't make the "carb" portion. So, like I'll just have piece of broiled salmon with green beans. Or I'll eat a can of tuna fish with Suzie's Rice Squares instead of bread/crackers and a side of a red bell pepper. Or if I want lasagna, I'll replace the noodles with mostly eggplant that I roast in strips first. Chili is another good one. Top it with greek yogurt instead of sour cream (I can't tell the difference!) and some cheese. I have eaten cheeseburgers/turkey burgers without the bun. I don't like the feeling of eating them in lettuce so I just eat them with a knife and fork. I like the low carb tortilla wraps by Fiber One and Mission and I'll put deli meat and cheese in them and toast them in a pan with non stick spray for a sort of "melt" or "faux quesedilla".

Low BMI Rate of Weight Loss?

My nutritionist has no respect for the fact that I want to eat Whole Foods, not food with additives. She just recommends her crystal light and reduced fat ingredients and moves on with her day. She told me no more smoothies made with greens, yogurt, chia/hemp seeds and berries. I honestly just nodded along by the end. I will follow the rules for safety reasons for pre-op and post-op, but I find the focus to be lacking health and nutrition in those sessions. There are hundreds of “diets” and some focus on losing weight and some on overall health and well-being, some on both. I think the key is finding what’s right for your body and eating what is in your value system, ie whether you’re vegan or whether you want to eat sustainable or whether you want convenience and affordability.
  9. I went back and looked at my food logs for when I first advanced to purée. I was eating about 4 TBS per meal on average - after the first few days I was eating up to half a cup of puréed black bean soup but my turkey chili purée was still 4 TBS (plus a TBS of fat free Greek yogurt and a scoop of protein powder). I would listen to your body and what you can do - and I was probably eating 4 meals a day at that point but one was a shake.

    Any March 2021 Sleeve Patients?

I had my surgery Feb 18th. It was a struggle for first 3 weeks, but now that I can enjoy some food it has become easier. I am down 32 lbs. I like to make my own chicken broth, has so much more flavor than cans. Yes, I know it has more fat & calories, but you need something in your stomach to make it happy. I do also have Bryers non fat fudge bars..this soothes my stomach. Water: at first I was sipping small amounts as directed. I am able to drink large amounts as long as there is no food to push it down and stretch stomach. I verified with my Dr. So basically I flavor my water with sugar free crystal light, lemonade country time and can easily drink 8-12 oz in 30 minutes if I wanted to. I am now eating sautéed soft fish with spinach. It digest well when your at 5 weeks. Poke is a good one too cuz it will digest, Cottage Cheese, scrambled eggs topped with tsp of non fat Greek yogurt. You can do it. It will be worth your suffering. 🤗

    Pureed Meats Struggles

I ended up eating protein shake for breakfast, yogurt for lunch, and a protein shake for dinner. Pretty much every day lol.
  12. I think depression is trying to set in ........ so I came to my parents for the kids Easter break and to get out of the house I recently lost my husband in January and I kinda been cooped up in the house except for when I go walking. My surgery was on the 12th and every went well until the second night I was in some pain and I wanted my husband [emoji20] [emoji22] they calmed me down and from there it has been good except I can't drink water like I want to anyway........ about last night well it started with dinner I'm now on puree foods but still drinking liquids the only thing that works is mash potatoes and I tried yogurt today and that made me a lil nausea but not to bad. Well after dinner in which I ate egg drop soup I got ready for bed once in bed I became very sad so sad I started crying [emoji22] I wanted to eat and I wanted my husband and I can't have either if it wasn't for my kids and their love and support I don't know how I would have gotten threw last night I really miss him. Sugar free deserts and heart healthy

Recently I also whipped up some Plain Greek Yogurt (about a cup) with a few tablespoons of Natural Peanut Butter (2-4 tbsp....just nuts and salt as ingredients), some cinnamon, and a little honey and made a "dip" for my apples. It's sooooo good! I also imagine you could eat the "dip" as is too.

Starting out on Soft Food Diet

See if your dietician or bariatric group will give you a list of specific examples. When I was on soft foods, I ate mashed potatoes, refried beans, cream soups, yogurt (the whipped greek yogurt was my favorite), cottage cheese, cream of wheat, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, soft poached fish.

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

My dietitian told to add low fat milk to yogurt to thin it out. I also found Kroger brand carbmaster protein smoothies that are pretty good, they're low cal, low fat, low sugar, low carb and have 12 grams of protein. Of course, always go by what YOUR surgeon tells you.

    Any March 2021 Sleeve Patients?

My surgery was on March 23rd, making today a week since surgery. Down 12 lbs since surgery as of this morning. I am just looking for suggestions and here to help anyone I can also. I have found a lot of my supplements on this site. I bought the wild cherry calcium which I had a hard time with so I switched over to chewable caltrate instead and that is much smaller and settles in my new little sleeve well. I use Fairlife protein shakes that are 30 grams protein and they go down okay, a little sweet since surgery. But I have had a little intestinal upset from them. I also have IBS which they hoped this surgery might help settle but no luck so far. I do have herbalife as an option but am wondering if anyone else has experience with that after surgery or if they found a protein shake that they liked after surgery? I'm also looking for any drink mixes that have protein added like fruit punch or fruit flavored? I did try one of Premier protein drinks but was not a fan of the flavor before surgery, may be okay after but haven't dared to try. I have been able to eat Greek yogurt fine but slowly. Also some sugar free pudding. Chicken broth has been amazing and the other night I tried wonton soup broth from my local Chinese restaurant and that was an amazing change up from the usual. Hope this helps some of you too.

    Bad Advice and being honest.

*raises hand* I'm identifying myself as one of these people described above as "obsessive to an extreme that leaves [you] scratching [your] head in big way" with "[my] disordered relationship with food in the name of perfection". Case in point: Last night I logged 8 cashews with my 1/2 cup yogurt, as well as the one sour kid gummy that the Kid offered me (aside: for those wondering with bated breath, all of that was 234 calories). I've been called "obsessive" alot. Or "crazy". And likely not in a very complimentary way, ha. (and not just food/bariatric life-wise...in basically EVERYTHING I do). While I will admit that I do tend strive for my idea of perfection in many things*, I can also accept that this is realistically unattainable. Shame spirals and self-loathing is not normally in my wheelhouse. Yeah, I'll get annoyed or frustrated or go into stream-of-consciousness swearing mode, but l deal. *On the flip side of this there are also many things that I have flat out given up on and completely embraced my utter incompetence in...if you have an hour or two I could attempt to list them all I just assume some people just don't get/accept me and/or my ways, and that's ok in the grand scheme of things. Some are mildly amused, some repulsed, still others want to save my soul, so to speak. And yep, there are those that stand shoulder to shoulder with me and say "Eff Yeah!" (obviously, I like these people the most, but I'm biased, lol) soooooo.....I suppose I just wanted to say to my fellow "extremists" that IMO, so long as logging your 4.5 almonds in MFP doesn't negatively affect you, your safety, your relationships, or your quality of life, there ain't nothing wrong with what you are doing. And even if it does, the hope is that you will learn to deal. P.S. Further to the poster who considered a Flintstones chew-able vitamin as dessert...last night I considered my solitary sour kid gummy as dessert! Mind you, I also considered my 1/2 cup of yogurt as "dinner", and my vodka caesar as "breakfast"...so maybe its just a matter of semantics.

6 week Pre op liquid diet

Wow! That is a long pre-op diet! It should get easier and the results will be worth it! Can you eat ANYTHING? Yogurt, sugar free jello, cottage cheese? Make sure you know! Also, I found that Swanson Sipping broths were convenient, high in protein and a welcome change from protein shakes. Good luck!
  19. Hope your protein intake gets easier soon! I couldn't do protein shakes and had a lot of nausea with meat for a while. At one point I was surviving on sugar free jello, greek yogurt and Fairlife (high protein) milk. If you can't handle meat, back off of it and get protein other places for a bit. Then try again when you are a bit further out.

    Out of surgery

My program does not have yogurt in this stage. But good to know it is working for you. I might switch if I continue having problems getting my shakes in. I started my day with E- drink(Gatorade zero) cuz I was getting leg cramps. Then tried to get in my shake for breakfast and started getting nauseous- probably sipping too quickly. Time for a nap. This is a bit exhausting to keep attention on sipping without without getting sick.
  21. Okay so I just found something that may help me and others in the purée stage with getting fiber. Oikos yogurt has 3g per serving. I don’t love Greek yogurt but I checked mine and it has none (my husband had the Greek stuff and he pointed it out) so I added a packet of Splenda and it’s isn’t super horrible that way. Tastes better than milk of magnesia. I read that we should try to get 5G per 1000 calories so I am gonna try to get one of those in a day and hopefully that will help.
  22. I also had really intense constipation for the first month after the sleeve. I took Benefiber and stool softeners and drank 90 oz of water a day, but I still had long bouts of painful constipation (5 days or more). At my one month check-in with the nutritionist, she told me it was fine to use Milk of Magnesia every other day prophylactically until I started getting more plant fiber in my diet. She also told me to add chia seeds to my Greek yogurt. This worked for that second month and, now 2.5 months out, I am able to eat more veggies and not taking the Milk of Magnesia anymore and am totally regular lol. TL;DR In my experience, getting enough fiber gets easier every week. Talk to your surgeon or nutritionist about Milk of Magnesia. My nutritionist didn't want people relying on it indefinitely, but was fine with me using it very regularly for a month until I started getting more fiber.

Suppose to be on stage 4, stuck in Stage 2

It does get easier. Protein from meat can be a funny thing. Some days are amazing getting it in and others I stick to things like tofu, cottage cheese, yogurt and protein soups when shakes seem too sweet. Just do the best you can for now. Does your surgeon have you on an acid reducer? If not that might be an option in helping you feel better. However if you’re on one, see about lowering the dose to see if that helps relieve symptoms as gastric bypass can cause acid reflux due to low stomach acid.

    2 week Liquid Diet Cheat

Hey I am also struggling with pre-op. Today was my first day. I’m allowed liquids, protein shakes, 2 lean solid proteins like eggs, chicken, Greek yogurt, and vegetables. No fat/carbs. I feel like I’m starving, my head hurts, and I have a short fuse with my twins. Considering that all these docs have different pre-op diets, it feels somewhat arbitrary and I hate doing things that don’t feel meaningful. So I just re-frame it in my mind “this is a challenge I can overcome and I’ll feel good knowing I did if.” Other diets felt pointless after awhile bc I knew I couldn’t sustain it forever. I’m like - 10 days - I can do this! I’m just hoping it gets easier!!

    Protein drinks make me nauseous

so sorry, full liquid stage is hard enough without your main food source making you sick. A few ideas for you to consider (if you haven't already) thinning the protein shake or using them to thin greek yogurt. bariatric protein soups and protein hot cocoas (you can get them on Amazon). using plain genepro - it is nearly taste and textureless - in a cup of tea, juice, or milk. FYI - there is some controversy on the genepro claim of how much protein is in a serving. At my dietician's advice I half the protein they claim to have in a serving just to be safe. Adding powdered milk to milk to make a higher protein drink, especially if you use fairlife milk which is already higher in protein. making popsicles out of the protein shakes, maybe having them as a frozen meal will make a difference?
