VSG to RYGB - after 5 years with VSG
Tracyringo replied to Paradigm Star's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I guessing they told you to stay clear of cream of wheat and other cereals because those things can cause dumping in some RNY people like myself. I cannot eat cereal of any kind even high protein. I think for me it has something to do with the carbs and dairy combination. Scrambled eggs, tuna packets and cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, ricotta bake, soup. Good Luck ! -

Hungry hungry hungry
Bella2021 replied to Bella2021's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
All of this? I had 2.0z of salmon and avocado puréed together and 1 cup of protein shake mixed with yogurt that took me about an hour to drink. I think that’s very minimal compared to what I should be eating . I’m on week 3z -
How much malabsorption do we have with calcium?
2Bsmaller18 replied to ShoppGirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I asked my surgeon and he said to count the shake as one of the 3 servings of calcium supplement. Later (6-9 months post surgery) said to go down to just 1x day since I had 1-2 glasses of milk or a shake and 1-2 servings of Greek yogurt a day. Your body can only absorb 500mg every few hours anyway so if you drink a shake and have a supplement at the same time you wont benefit from the excess anyway. -
I talked to my Surgeon about this hunger issue yesterday at my one-week post-op appt. He said with the DS there is "more stomach" than the other surgeries, so its not unusual to be hungry. He wanted to make sure it was not the pyloric valve (stomach to the duodenum) that was inflamed and making it feel like hunger. I have had no other issues and have easily been able to meet hydration and protein goals. He let me go ahead and add a small amount of plain Greek yogurt, applesauce, and cottage cheese to my full liquid diet. I also started in drinking several glasses of hot green tea with stevia (helps). Just an FYI, but I would suggest asking your Dr if your hunger is really feeling like an issue. He also recommended some gas x, and Devrom (sold on bariatric pal), as it seems I'm somewhat sensitive to all the whey protein...if you know what I mean.

I HATE broth!!!
SummerTimeGirl replied to Dajshadenee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Haven't had the surgery yet but I see on my list of "full liquids" they have that I can have STRAINED low fat cream soups. Would something like that make a difference do you think? Have you tried bone broth or does that not matter? Are you even allowed to have those (the cream soups)? They even have blended bean soups being ok for me with my liquid portion of the diet. Are you allowed light or greek yogurts? Sugar free pudding and jello? I know every doc and diet is different but just wanted to mention the things that are allowed on mine that maybe you could ask about if you aren't allowed already. -
I’m 3 weeks post sleeve. After moving to purée stage I was feeling hungry more often. Yes get the protein in first. My directions are 1 scoop of protein powder must have 20 gms of protein and below 12 gms of sugar. I mix the protein powder with almond milk. I got a jug of protein powder that tastes terrible so I got some dry peanut butter powder from Amazon for more protein. I mix only 4 ozs almond milk, protein powder 1 scoop, 2 Tbsp of dry peanut powder plus one Tbsp sugar free Greek vanilla yogurt. Tastes like a peanut butter milkshake which if you like peanut butter tastes pretty good. Somewhere I read the difference between head hunger and true hunger. I find that useful. Make sure you are drinking enough water because dehydration can be confused for hunger. My diabetes immediately went away so the surgery was well, well worth it in my book. Good luck!!

I ate a lot of chicken in the early stages. I baked the chicken breast and then ran it through the food processor to get the consistency I wanted and needed. The variety came from how I seasoned it. Comfort food=a "sauce" of thickened chicken bullion and a tiny bit of mashed potato. Mexican=taco seasoning+plain yogurt in place of sour cream. Italian=a little red sauce plus mozzarella or parmesan. Other options included soy or teryaki sauce or Cajun seasoning. I think you get the idea. I was able to satisfy my taste buds. When I first started preparation for WLS, I was of the mindset that I was not going to weigh food or track intake. Although I already had a pretty good idea of what portion sizes were supposed to look like, tracking and weighing have made a huge improvement in making sure I'm getting the suggested amounts of food. I use Lose It for tracking. The basic version is free and used it for months. I upgraded to premium during a sale but I don't really use the extra features. I think you'll get many opinions on what people choose to use. It's just a matter of what you like.

Post-op Portions help (1 month out)

Wow I'm three weeks post-op and I can't even get to 500 kcal per day. It's really difficult and I feel like anything other than chicken pureed with broth, greek yogurt and protein shakes gives me acid reflux -
The protein powder + yogurt + some PB2 is an EXCELLENT high protein option. Got me through like 2 weeks when savory foods weren’t appealing!! You’re doing GREAT Laurent (you too Aubrey)!! You will NOT fail! You’ve got this!! You’ve got a support system here. A lot of people (including me) lose their support systems after surgery because people suck, so this community is super helpful and important in recovery. I’d you need anything PM me. I’m a newb (8 weeks out) but since you’re behind me, I can give you some tips and tricks that got me through the first 2 months!!

I’m 4 weeks post op and feel the exact same way. Anything with flavor makes me want to puke. The only thing I can stomach is Greek yogurt bars by yasso. Water even makes me nauseous. My nausea medication makes me nauseous lol. It’s all bad over here. When I do attempt to eat I have to close my nose so the smell of my food no matter what it is doesn’t make me Puke it back up. I’m just about ready to throw all the food away in my freezer. This too shall pass I guess.

when i was did puree week, i found that adding a "flavourless" (i mean, it's NOT flavourless, but it's alright) protein powder (at least 30g protein per serve) to yogurt really helped me. that and protein powder with low-fat milk and fruit blitzed to smoothie consistency. proud of you, you can get over the hill!

Hi friends I’m a bit worried because I’m 2 weeks post op and 5 days into my purée food diet and I hear of people being stuffed quick but I am always hungry and snacking on tuna, egg salad, or ricotta bake. I do eat yogurt but man I just ate 4 oz of tuna salad and could’ve eaten more. I’m getting worried has anyone else felt like this? Thanks Mark

Did my follow up this morning and I got the thumbs up to start my vitamin regimen and also start the next stage for food. Yay! I tried the ricotta bake (minus the harder to digest cheeses) and it tasted AMaZING. I have sugar free pudding, applesauce, refried beans, and mashed potatoes ready to go. I’m not into puréed meat.... so that won’t be happening. I will be at this stage for two weeks. I am still not feeling the hunger. I really just “blah” about food in general. I will have to remind myself to start alarms to tell me when to eat. With just two protein shakes a day it was easy, but now I will have to get down two protein shakes in between “meals” (like 2 tablespoons worth lol) and can’t drink 30 minutes before the meals. Etc. So it’s going to be more tricky until I find a Rhythm for the last stage I was in: the Jell-O shots were a fail. I really didn’t care for them. They were too sweet. I’m likely going to end up just letting my kids go nuts on them. I might try again with jello and Greek yogurt mixed together to make a mousse type thing. The yogurt may tone it down a bit.

I’ve been on my puréed stage for a week and a half now and I’m feeling really discouraged. I am constantly hungry. I had 2 tbsp of cream of wheat for Breakfast made with 1/2 c Fairlife skim milk.... was hungry about an hour later. So, I had a smoothie I made (1 c. Fairlife, 1/2 container greek yogurt, 2 tbsp blueberries, 2 tbsp raspberries, 1/4 banana, 1 scoop genepro). 11 am rolled around... I was hungry again! I waited until lunch(12:00 for me) and had 1/4 c ham salad and 3 tbsp cottage cheese. At 3 pm I was hungry again! I am so stinking frustrated. Am I doing something wrong? What is going on? I feel like I'm overeating and ruining my new stomach!

Post-op Portions help (1 month out)

I had appt at surgeon’s office today. I asked the PA about not feeling the restriction and she said as I increase the density of foods I should feel it more. ( I.e. will feel full earlier with steak than yogurt). She said if I was stopping before I get that feeling and feel I have eaten enough that is fine. The Nut felt 3 oz of chicken at one time is too much for where I am post op even though I feel no restriction, and I should back it down to 2 oz so I can add veggies etc now. I have been progressed to regular bariatric diet after this. -

Sleevers....What brand multi vitamin are you taking?
KayBee1972 replied to Tim C's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I still have about 3 weeks worth of the opurity multivitamins. Every day I choke that thing down. The one day it wasn't awful was when I took it with a cup of coffee. Slightly less bad is taking it with yogurt. It also helps if you break it into smaller pieces first. I usually kind of bite it into 4 smaller pieces, take a bite of yogurt or banana and chew as quickly as I can. I don't retch the way I did for the first 4 weeks, but they are still awful, awful, awful. -

No but I will tonight. I need to eat something to keep me from getting up at night & a yogurt smoothie sounds 👍 This a.m. I had 1 slice of rasen bread & a teaspoon of peanut butter, lunch I had 1 leaf of romaine lettuce &1 slice of low sodium turkey, for a snack I had a protein bar & ALL day I'm drinking lemon & cucumber water tonight I'll hv a cup of wonton soup, 4oz of beef & broccoli & a 8oz cup of yogurt smoothie as a snack -
Not sure how picky of an eater you may be, but are you at the hummus stage? Also, I was getting sooooo sick of sweet stuff that I made a non-fat strained version of tsaziki yogurt to satisfy my need for savory and it was really good. Maybe thinned out turkey chili? Again not sure where you are in your surgeon’s food stage intros nut sure this helps! wishing you much success! Feel good!

Today I upped my protein . I had half of premier protein with some Greek yogurt and made a shake and I was pretty full off that and then I had some salmon with avocado. I think the shake helped to cut down some of the hungry. I’m new to this and figuring it out as well. Have you tried that ? -

February 2021 bypassers?
Orig Ironman replied to TreeTrunks's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Where did everyone go? I hope everyone is doing well. I'm 8 weeks out at this point down 30lbs. I had a few stalls but just checked my diet and got back on track with protein and water intake and a few more walks. I got Covid as well and was not feeling well for a week thankfully it was pretty mild. I went for a couple of 1 mile runs for the first time since surgery this week as well. Feeling good and looking good. I'm still craving bad foods especially at night. I tried to fast from 8pm -8 am and that lasted a day to try to keep from snacking. So I'm just trying to have better snacks than my go to chips. Greek Yogurt or apple and peanut butter or the jello sugar free pudding cups. But definitely craving salt and crunch.
