  1. I have been feeling very tired the last few days also. My surgery was September 19 and am on week 2 of liquid diet. I have stopped loosing weight for about 10 days now and will have my first appointment with my team on Wednesday. I know the process is long term and can take time. My concern is I'm eating late as I tend to sleep in . And start my day later on. 11am most days. I use to be up at 7 am before surgery. Going to bed 12-2 am. And napping 2 or 3 times a day for 20 min to 1.5 hours. I feel disconnected from routine. I have tried to go to bed earlier but lie there for hours on end and eventually get up. Just feeling frustrated right now. Thank you for any ideas or recommendations.

    Swollen abdomen

Varies a bit I think? For me I didn't really notice it at about a week to 10 days post-op.
  3. I am just starting out on my journey here, I thought when I lost 100 lbs in 2019 I would never be this heavy again. Unfortunately that is not the case and I am the heaviest I have ever been. In 2019 I was diagnosed with POTS and EDS which honestly explains many of the issues I have had since I was a child. My primary referred me to see bariatrics and now I am here. I have had my initial consult which was quite interesting and daunting as with a complex medical history there are additional steps. I have my first “medically supervised weight loss appt” coming up this week (way better than waiting til Jan.) I am here looking for friends, good vibes and advice all welcome.

    I feel guilty eating

Ok, I can speak on this since I literally went through this exact thing. First of all, you are in a stall. The first one usually hits around 3 weeks, but it can be a little earlier (like it was for me) or a little later. Keep eating what's in the plan, no more and no less, and get your walking in (maybe look into getting some ankle and wrist weights). That leads me to my 2nd point. Look for non scale victories. Anytime I hit a stall, I started trying on clothes and rings and looking at my neck and face and chin. The scale may not be moving, but that doesn't mean things aren't happening. The first time I was able to sit in a booth and there was space between my stomach and the table, I was elated. When my clothes were literally falling off me and my ring came off twice, I was ecstatic. Just because the scale is being stubborn doesn't mean progress isn't being made. Third, you have to eat. This will sound crazy, but if you restrict too much, your body will think it's starving and it will hold on to every little bit of weight it can. My dietician wanted me to stay at 700-800 calories per day, 50 or less carbs, 50 or less fats, and 60-80g protein. My body didn't like that at all. Not one bit. I hit stall after stall, would drop maybe 1 or 2 pounds, then nothing. I started experimenting and found that between 1050 - 1200 calories per day, 25-35 carbs per day, 70-90 fats per day, and 90-95g protein per day was where my body was happiest. I work out for 45 min - 1 hour 5 days per week. And then I started seeing MUCH better results, both on and off the scale. Now, I'm not saying that works for everyone, and those amounts are specific to MY body, and my body alone. But at about 3 1/2 months post op, I knew I had to do something. You body NEEDS food. It's like depriving your car of gas and then being surprised it won't go. Same thing. Lastly, I was in such a disordered way of thinking and behaving that I HAD to go to therapy. I'm still in it, actually. I had myself working out 2 hours per day every single day, living on flavored water, 300-400 calories per day, 10-15 carbs per day, almost no fats at all, and 40 or so grams of protein. And the less weight I lost, the harder I pushed my body and restricted what I gave it. I was so afraid of eating because I was convinced every bite would put all the weight back on. I was, at one point, eating 1 meal per day that I would make stretch all day and loading up on flavored water to curb the hunger pains. It's scary to think about what I was doing to myself. Find a therapist that specializes in bariatric surgery, and if you can find one that also works with people with eating disorders, that's even better. That's what I did. I still struggle sometimes, but I remember how far I've come and how much healthier and stronger my body is, and it helps me push past the feelings of wanting to cut my food and load up on water again. But a therapist is really important right now. I waited until I was in the thick of it before I even posted about it here, and I was encouraged to find a therapist, which was the best thing I could have done. I swapped one disordered way of thinking for another. I'm making my way back from it, but I'm still a work in progress. You can do this. I wish you all the luck

    October 2022 surgery support

I just had both done 10/5. I'm doing great. Gas pressure is gone and pain is minimal. Haven't had any pain meds since day 2
  7. Congrats on the weight loss! You have done amazing! I am pre op and just starting to see skin issues due to pre op weight loss, so no in your boat yet. I have used bike shorts or compression shorts for years to help with my tummy during exercises. I have bought through Amazon and woman within. Also going to get some compression sleeves (Amazon has them for about $10) because I have massive arm fat that’s starting to dangle and will probably get in the way soon. There are also some zip front full bras made for exercise that look like it may tame the side breast skin and fat that I have starting to be floppy. Don’t have any specific brands but I try to look through reviews on Amazon before buying.

    How much can you eat?

10 months post op. I eat anything I want at very small amounts. I didn't eat a huge amount before. After 6 weeks I wasn't on any restrictions. I don't eat junk food or processed foods very much never did. Good luck to you.

    69 yrs old and unsure..

I am in my 60's and BMI is at least 40 right now. Did you all have to follow the protocol of medical weight loss first, and have all the tests that I hear about? Trying to get an idea of how long it may be between my first visit on 10/11 and possible surgery date. I have had most of the tests that I've been reading that are required, except the psychologist.
  12. Female, 5’5 and day of surgery I was 189.6 I got my surgery on 08/29. At my first appointment I weighed 220. I am currently 166.6 as of 10/07. I didn’t give myself a chance to recover because I was moving apartments(move out date 08/31). I had zero pain, only discomfort when the glue on incision was lifting. I think the pre-op diet and exercise routine helped tremendously for my recovery. I also eat a lot of chicken breast and protein. I did eat a cheese burger once during my menses because I was feeling constipated- it helped me the next day to be relieved.
  13. I've used a CPAP for about 12 years now. I'll echo what @summerseeker said. You may need to try different masks to find what works for you. Because I'm a side/stomach sleeper, big masks didn't work for me, but I found that this works pretty well: https://www.resmed.com/en-us/sleep-apnea/cpap-parts-support/sleep-apnea-full-products-list/cpap-masks/airfit-p10/ I've used one of these exclusively for about 10 years. As an aside, I'm really hoping to be cured of the sleep apnea as I continue to lose weight. The plan right now is for me to get a new sleep study ~6 months post surgery. Fingers crossed.
  14. Like some of you I was lower BMI. I was healthy but I had struggled for 10 years, my deciding point was when I realized that I didn’t want to suffer for another 10 years and then get the surgery. It was the best thing I have ever done for myself & recommend it to anyone struggling. Good luck!
  15. Ok guys I swore to share the good the bad and the ugly so here goes… I have not been active in here much lately because I have been absolutely exhausted with work. I left work early to visit an iv bar yesterday! If you are weak and exhausted from lack of vitamins just go do it trust me!!! It makes a huge difference! On top of that I have never been regular with the potty and that has gotten worse since surgery. So tonight I took it upon myself to take something to help out in that area. For the love of all things holy if you feel the need to go this route DO NOT TAKE THE DOSE RECOMMENDED ON THE BOX!!!! There are approximately 10 steps between my bed and my bathroom if in a hurry and I promise you I made it about 3 of those steps… I have managed to clean myself out and also managed to have the rest of the medication my stomach couldn’t handle come out the top side. So now I am laying in my bed contemplating my life choices and exactly how I might go about recovering from this horrific night… it is well past my bed time and I am terrified to go to sleep!!! Send prayers for my dumb self please!!!

What made you decide to have a WLS?

I was in high school (late 90’s) and saw some kind of dateline/news special about bariatric surgery. By that point I was already doing diets with my mom. It had been in my mind since. Fast forward 20 years to 2019 and I had my appendix removed. At my post op appointment my surgeon (who also happened to be a bariatric surgeon- I didn’t know that when the hospital asked me if I had a surgeon I preferred. I chose him because he had previously saved my dads life) asked me if I had thought about weight loss surgery. I said I had and he recommended that I sign up for the program his office offered, so I did.
  17. I had gastric bypass surgery 10 years a ago. I had the revision in June and have only lost 10 pounds. I feel like it was a waste of time. There isn’t a restriction on how much I can eat. It is very discouraging.
  18. Hi - 5 weeks post op from Gastric Bypass. I am having bloating in my abdomen and discomfort (feeling full ALOT).. Sometimes I have nausea. I understand this can happen after I eat but this is sometimes when I wake up (10+ hours since eating) I am also struggling to have bowel movements. I took a stool softener every day before surgery to help but I've been told not to take since somedays are mainly diarhea. I am losing weight but worry. Thoughts?

    Weight regain

Just be slightly more strict with yourself and wean yourself off a bit on the snack foods. Like yourself, I had some gain back due to a med that I needed for a TN flare (gabapentin) and got all the way up to 197 pounds. I've since weaned myself off the med after being put on something different that doesn't cause weight gain and I've dropped 10 of the pounds I gained as I'm 187 today, but I don't know if it's even possible to lose the 5-10 more pounds I want as I've been struggling to lose any more despite adjusting and fixing my eating habits. My doctor told me today to not stress about it because some of it may be due to my MCAS and some of the issues it's been causing lately. So maybe a part a part of the weight gain you're experiencing is diet, some from the med, and the other part possibly stress? (stress can cause weight gain as well) If you're struggling with getting your diet back on track just slowly adjust it. Don't stress yourself out even more by denying yourself everything just cut it back slowly bit by bit and eventually you'll be eating better and hopefully the weight will come back off.
  21. How low is low? How tall are you & what’s your BMI? I was 200lbs but at only 5’3 my BMI was 35. I lost all my weight and more. Got to my goal in 6 months & lost another 11+kgs over the next 11 months or so. I maintained at about 49kgs for a year. I put on 2kgs in a month because of a necessary dietary change & a change of a med & have been sitting at about that 51kg for almost 10 months There have been posters here who started with BMIs of less than 35 & had the surgery because of existing health issues & they were able to lose weight. The main difference between people with higher starting weights & those with lower is that those at a higher weigh lose more quickly at first. But their rate of loss slow as they lose weight just like everyone else. Recovery is an individual thing - just how your body reacts to the surgery & heals. Nothing really to do with your weight as such but existing health factors may influence your recovery. Some people who carry a lot of weight in their abdominal area sometimes struggle with more discomfort when getting up & down & generally moving as the weight around their tummy pulls at the internal & external surgical sites. A binder is often helpful as it supports the tummy & abdominal muscles.
  22. My experience, and mine alone. I had the lapband in 2008. Had it for 7 it 8 years. No WLS restriction is more miserable compared to what I had experienced with the lapband. The pain in my chest, the having to void in a public restroom because the pressure in my throat. When I had the lapband restriction, it was THE most unnatural feeling. With the RNY, you will live a much smoother and normal life. As long I chew well, I literally have zero side effects from the RNY. It has been over a year. Hard to explain, but for once, I feel so normal now. To me, when I get full, it's very similar to getting full before any WLS. You just have to learn your body's clues. If one doesn't want to dump, you stay away from those foods. One stays away from foods when they are allergic to them. Most do not dump anyway. As far as safety. This may help you out. RNY is not the same surgery as it was many years ago. It is laparoscopic, so much safer, so much so that many surgeons now do the RNY even as an outpatient procedure now. I was released within 24 hours. https://www.pennmedicine.org/updates/blogs/metabolic-and-bariatric-surgery-blog/2019/may/is-bariatric-surgery-safe
  23. Hi. I’m new here and I’ve been reading several posts. I’m getting the gastric bypass on 19 October 2022, following removal of the gastric lap band. I am terrified and now I am thinking about cancelling the operation altogether. I am terrified of how things will be to travel and eating, catching up with friends for dinner and a glass of wine and don’t get me started on what I’ve been reading about dumping syndrome! I’m not going into this very lightly and have given it quite a bit of thought but now that the surgery day is almost here (currently doing the pre-op diet) I’m starting to really freak out! I’m from the Australia, Sydney so any help will be greatly appreciated thank you
  24. If I didn't have a history of all other weigh loss medications failing I would be convinced not to get the surgery. But I am too far along in the process (surgery on 10/11/22) to stop now. It is the best weight loss medication I've ever experienced. I've recommended to everyone who isn't ready for surgery and I will take it again with a heartbeat LOL.
  25. I am 5’4” and was 200 lbs. when I got my sleeve in 2020. I got down to 146 and have pretty much maintained that weight for a year. I would love to lose another 10 lbs but, I confess, I don’t exercise quite as much as I could, and the nutritionist suggested light weight training, Someday…..
