  1. Stalls happen. For me, they happen all the time. However, probably something like 80% of people have their first stall within the first month. It's generally referred to as 'the 3 week stall' because it usually happens around week 3 post op though can happen around weeks 2-5. Stalls generally last between 2-3 weeks. My longest one lasted 47 days. And no, I'm not joking. I lost 2 pounds on May 5th and then didn't lose anything until June 22nd where I lost 1 pound. Fifteen days later I lost another pound (it's been two days since I lost that last pound lol so who knows how long until I lose another). However, I'm also 17 months out so I'm getting closer to maintenance so my experience is a little different I guess, but I've had stalls constantly throughout my journey. It's an annoying part of it, for me. But hey, I've still lost 138 pounds since my surgery (and an additional 68 pounds prior to surgery) so try not to stress (next to impossible not to, I know).
  2. My story is almost identical to yours. I had a 3 week stall and then some. I was sleeved on April 4 and lost a lot at first then May hit. I knew it was going to be a challenge. The 15th my daughter graduated from College in Chicago, so we spent a 4 day weekend there. On the 22nd we went down-state Michigan for a memorial service for my wife's brother and then 3 days ago, one of my best friends got married. So it has been a lot of travel and crap. On May 8th I weighed 200 even and I actually somewhere in there went up to 204. Last week I went to the surgeon's office and I broke the 200 at 199. About 2 1/2 months before surgery I started physical therapy. My doc. thought it was sciatica, the therapist thought it was the piriformis muscle, but the MRI showed I have a pinched nerve at S1. So I haven't been able to exercise much at all. I am seeing the neuro-surgeon about it tomorrow and having an epidural on Thursday. The pinched S1 causes the muscles in my calves to cramp up and the muscles in my buttocks hurt a lot so even a recumbent bike isn't an option at this point. But I am learning to be gentle with myself.....this things shall pass and the weight will come off. Don :P:P:P
  3. Thank you so much. Give it some time. My starting weight was 242 lbs in July and to date I have lost 47 lbs so this wasn't an overnight thing. So please don't think I'm one of those that posts 100 lbs gone on 2 weeks????????????. Not true here. This has been a challenge this entire month and I have already had the dreadful 3 week stall but I kept pushing through and will keep doing so until I reach goal. I encourage you to do the same and we will both get there. Success is within reach... I can taste it.
  4. Thanks for the great advice! Yeah, Ive def heard about the 3 week stall, just wasn't expecting it after 1 week!
  5. So I started at 314, now down to 274, but the scale has stopped moving completely. I've been at 274 for over a week and I'm soooo frustrated. I only weigh myself on Friday mornings.....how long does this stall last? I'm cleared to start working out again on Monday, can't wait and hoping that will help

5 months out...tortoise or the hare?

I'm a slow loser too. Right now I am losing about 2 pounds a week. I have only had one stall, and that was the 3 week stall everyone mentions. Pre-gastric sleeve, I had to practically starve myself to lose one pound a week (I lost 70 pounds as a teenager). So the slow loss doesn't surprise me, but it is frustrating because you DO wonder, what if it slows down even more the closer I get to one year out? My nutritionist and the nurse both said that the closer you get to one year, the more likely it is that weight loss will slow down. They were telling me that because I had not lost the amount they believe I should have lost at my two month checkup and they wanted to warn me it may get harder in the future to lose weight. I don't need it to slow down at all - that would be hard to deal with but I would have to learn to deal with it. I've still got 100 pounds to lose. They are wanting me to lose 70 pounds (total, so another 30 pounds for me by February) by my six month mark, which is what I have been striving for. I go to the gym 3-4 times per week (should be 5-6 times a week but life gets in the way) and try to be active outside of the gym. I eat 1000-1100 calories per day. But I can do more - like walking during lunchtime. I am wondering if there are people out there that were slow losers throughout the whole process and still met their goal. I am wondering if people like us will just lose at this rate the entire time or if they slowed down even more as time went on.
  7. That certainly can be discouraging. I lost a 30 lbs. in the first 4 weeks and then hit a 3 week stall. Bottom line, there is no reason for concern unless it is 3 lbs in 6 MONTHS! Focus on your surgery recovery and make sure you are getting your walks in! It will happen.
  8. Unfortunately you are going through the 3 week stall. Your body is going through a resting phase. I guarantee that one day you'll get on the scale and you'll drop like 5 lbs, because that's what happened to me. I hate stalls, but I guarantee you're losing inches though, even if the scale isn't moving. Hang in there your doing great. 19 lbs is awesome!

    Weight coming off too fast?

You guys are awesome! Thanks! The Protein is a battle right now- I've tried ALL of the brands- the fruit based, the milk based - they are all disgusting. But I may just have to hold my nose and get it in. So I guess the "3 week stall" is what I should watch out for and look fondly back at the "oh crap it's coming off to fast" when that happens. I'm keeping my Water up pretty good- I'm not having any nausea and I can almost chug water without problems . Thanks again for the support- this newbie has lots of questions.
  10. Could someone give me an idea of the recommended calorie, fat, protein count I should be getting. Everyone seems to have gotten that information from a Dr. (in a book or pamphlet) I didn't, not from nutritionist either and she is no longer available. I started at 235 on August 1(I am 8 wks out today). I have been able to tolerate everything I've tried-no major bread or sugars or fried foods except maybe a tiny pinch. I've never felt that "full" feeling yet. I would love to have some basics from others about the same stage. I'm getting between 800-950 cals, at least 60 Protein, and 64 ozs. water. I hit a 3 week stall at week 4 and stayed at a 25lb loss, it finally broke and now I am at 32# down. I'm good with that......I just want to know if I'm in the right area. This sight crashes on me so, if anyone can help, feel free to send me an email mshydeaway@gmail.com . I would very much appreciate it and good luck to all!
  11. Here is a link to an article from magazine section on the site. It's great 'food' for thought. http://www.bariatricpal.com/page/articles.html/_/plateaus-and-regain/breaking-a-weight-loss-plateau-r46 Also, check out this 3 Week Stall explanation. It makes sense to me. (Thanks Kindle!!) http://www.dsfacts.com/weight-loss-stall-or-plateau.html#.U7I2Stq9KSN From my personal experience, which is limited, if you have stalled for a bit, look for the non-scale changes. When my weight change slows, I find that my body is shifting. This is when I see the bigger changes in inches and other things like stamina. Bottom line, we all go through stalls, and we get past them. Keep working your program and it will work for you!!
  12. Yes! I had the dreaded 3 week stall also and that lasted for two weeks. I am now about 10 weeks out and just hit a stall again, but I was just under 300 for a long time. I hope I don't keep stalling every 5-6 weeks!
  13. I had my VSG on March 16, 2011. I thought that I was doing well with the weight loss and I've been at a stall for the past week. Its so frustrating. I went from 251 down to 239 and the scale has not moved. I'm currently on the mush diet, getting in my Protein shakes and even started back at the gym. I've read through the different threads and I guess I'm just at the "3 week stall". Its even more frustrating because I had surgery with a gal I met at the hospital and she's already lost 26 lbs. I'm truly happy for her, but I just don't know what else I can do at this point besides wait it out. I know how many people feel that hit the stall and it feels like the end of the world. I'm just praying that the weight loss starts back up soon. Right now I'm starting to question my decision about having had the surgery. I've lost weight on my own before and I've never had this happen this early on. - Dani

    Stall

Your body is still in its healing process. The 3 week stall is normal and my doctor advised that weight loss isn't going to be a curve but more like stair steps; there will be moments it goes down and then periods of stalls. Much easier expectation set up in my opinion. Stick with your plan and trust the process. The weight is worth the wait!

    No longer answering these questions:

Would it be mean to just tell them to use the search feature? Especially when they just get the surgery and ask basic questions and you know darn well they are going to next post about the 3 week stall etc? Sent from my SM-G930P using the BariatricPal App

    No longer answering these questions:

The 3 week stall really bugs the heck out of me. SEARCH! The only poop question I had was after searching and didnt find nobody else talking about it. It was because I start gagging and trying to vomit when going. Doesn't happen often, maybe once every 2 weeks now. After nobody here had that, I googled it and other people had the same problem on another forum. Sent from my SM-G930P using the BariatricPal App
  17. I am at the 3 week stall too. Lost 23 lbs, and there I am stuck. I think I just need to put the scale away for a bit, but once you get that taste of loosing, it is soooo hard when it stops. I keep telling myself that there is no way this won't work, I am eating only a fraction of what I used to eat and I am making good choices about what I am eating.

    Frustrated with stall...

I have a 2-3 week stall (sometimes gain a few pounds during) every single month when my period starts. And yet, I've still managed to lose over 100 pounds since surgery in less than 6 months. 24 pounds in a week is freaking unbelievable - imagine how much your body is freaking out right now, trying to balance itself. It thinks you're in a life and death crisis. Be patient with yourself and in 6 months to a year you'll be amazed at how far you've come. We didn't get obese overnight and we aren't going to get healthy overnight either.
  19. You just had surgery 2 weeks ago and went through with a decision to alter your life. If you didn't have moments of regret, sadness or panic you wouldn't be normal! Do not base your future on how you feel right now. You put your stomach and body through a painful, unnatural thing, and readjustment takes a while. Right now, you don't feel good, but in 6 months or a year, it will be different. If you don't believe me just read a few posts on the Veterans board. They were all here once too and now look at them!! Also, as our bodies burn that fat, it releases hormones that take us on an emotional roller coaster. I cried because 13 years ago when my sister got married , I was 15 and I couldn't go to her bachelorette party. Ohhhhh hormonal emotional roller coaster! On top of that, if you were an emotional eater, you just lost your best coping skill. You can't eat to deal with feelings effectively anymore. You changed your life -- there is a certain greiving process that goes with that -- it's not easy. Going back and forth between "awesome" and "oh crap" is part of that greif. Next, I want you to be prepared for the stalls that are going to come because they will come and if you are already down, the kick of a stall will hurt that much more. A stall is your body playing catch up and will pass - no one stays stuck in their 3 week stall!!

    Do You Log Your Food?

I log every bite on SparkPeople.com I've just had a 3 week stall at 9 weeks out and without my log I would have second guessed my brain into pudding. I agree with the suggestions in JeanieboBeanie's post for suggestions. Thanks for writing it all down so concisely. I currently use Cron-o-meter, but have used MFP, Lose it, and some others attached to devices (like BodyMedia and Up.) Here's my wish list: Detailed micronutrient tracking. Cron-o-meter is FABULOUS at this and I appreciate it more and more as I transition to solid food. It tells me if/when I'll be ready to drop particular supplements. Along with this - a real blue-sky dream - an app that can suggest particular foods that will help me meet my goals. For example, if I'm not getting enough Iron, suggest liver or other foods that are super-dense in that particular nutrient(s) Goal ranges instead of discrete ceilings or floors A way to log my hunger at the beginning, middle, and end of a meal (a simple 1-10 scale would be fine) A place to keep notes on how I'm feeling (stressed, tired, bored, celebratory) and some way to mine that data back out (see reporting/exporting) A good recipe builder. One of the things I appreciate about Cron-o-meter (and I hated about My Fitness Pal) is the fact that it keeps a running weight log for any given recipe, so when I eat it, I can just weigh my portion and put that in (as opposed to determining set portions.) The ability to translate and move easily between measurement units (g v. ounces, volume) The ability to scan barcodes The ability to sync bi-directionally with my fitness apps (see: Jawbone, MapMyFitness, etc.) so I only have to log things like biometrics (weight, fat %) in a single place Robust reporting and exporting so you can see patterns and make connections (e.g. changes in macronutrient ratios when you're tired, etc.) I'm not a huge fan of crowdsourcing foods...UNLESS they include ingredient lists with amounts. Otherwise, how do I know what's in that chili, or if it's nutritionally similar to MY chili? That's my main beef with MFP (but not my only one.) I don't trust the data. Venting my depression

Im so depressed right now and im the most negative person on the planet.. i cant seem to get out of my rut. Im only 3 weeks postop and regreting every day about getting the sleeve. Im sick of pureeds and not being able to drink water with my food. Life sucks right now and cant find anything positive to think about except looking up healthy snacks and meals on pinterest ill make in a year from now... ive hit i guess its called the 3 week stall and have been the same weight for 5 days now. My husband lost his job recently and have know idea whats going to happen now. Will we have to move in with one of our moms with 2 kids, 3 dogs, 3 cats and 2 turtles or sell and move to a different city after thinking this house was going to be our forever home. My husband has gone to interviews but nothings working out. Im assuming the worst like always and feel like i cant even be a good partner trying to hold him up with freaking out and dealing with my own negative funk. I dont want to go do anything. I feel like the tvs been my sidekick and cant break the habit. Im so sick of making my kids yummy meals and my husband doesnt seem to eat unless i make him food. I made him meatloaf and a cheessy baked potato with veggys and my mouth was watering and also had tears on my face. I just want to feel pretty and normal and dont know how. Sorry to vent it feels alittle better writing all that down for some reason.
  22. It's the 3 week stall that 99% of people go through. No worries. Keep on keepin on!
  23. Search on here for 3 week stall. It happens to many. You have to also remember, that if you are following the diet Clear liquids week one, add Protein drinks, pudding, etc on week two. On week three you might be adding foods like cottage cheese, tuna, other items that may contain some sodium which you have not been having for almost two months (if you followed a pre-op diet for two weeks, and then the two weeks clear/and Soups, pudding, Jello, etc. If you are this hard on yourself at this stage, you should really contact your nutritionist and therapist to deal with the emotional stage. You don't want to anger yourself down the line, and start feeding the emotions. Good luck, and seriously relax a bit. Read many of the people that stalled the first month.
  24. That is the infamous 3-weeks stall which is common. It happened to almost all of us over here. Don't worry and just carry on.
  25. It goes fast! I'm only 6 days out and I feel so much better already. I'm down 6.8 pounds, getting tons of liquids and all my Protein. I got out of the house yesterday for my first social outing. Not looking forward to the 3 week stall, but it's nice to know it's normal and I won't be alone.
