Jersrose43 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So day 2 pre op diet I modified my diet so I didn't go cold turkey I did one Protein Shake a day for last 10 days or so. Lost 14 pounds. Not bad. Feel great. No loss of energy. Yesterday was day 1 2 shakes. Protein shake for Breakfast and lunch. I didn't do enough Water Sensible dinner was actually vegetarian I noticed at the end of day I was really agitated I mean downright edge of insanity. I had a very stressful day at work and blamed it there Today I am having moderate workday but it's 2 pm and I am ready to rip people into 50,000 pieces. I am so sick of bs I just want to punch someone in the face. Oh my flipping lord! And the back pain from losing 14 pounds in last 10 days is excruciating I can't find a comfortable sitting standing or laying position. And the stress is making it worse. No loss of energy. No headaches. Just really pissed off, a little hungry not a lot, and ugh!!!! I am gonna go take a Xanax Like seriously. Not expecting this -

Let's do Brunch, Lunch or Dinner - how do you handle it?

I've told people I've cut out sugar and starches, and therefore am eating mostly at home, since being a vegetarian, this greatly restricts the kinds of things I can find in restaurants. But I've also said that I still wanna socialize and they shouldn't feel weird eating around me. It's been fine so far. I also just get soup or tea or coffee or something (my surgeon said coffee is fine, but I know that's not the case for everyone). -
Well according to some random BMI chart I am no longer morbidly obese, I'm just Overweight now. So, yay! Also, on day 23 of my Vegetarian journey and honestly, I'm not going back to eating meat again. I feel like I've redicovered food again.

Ground meat is pretty safe for me too. My surgery was over one year ago and I still can't do chicken or turkey unless it's ground. Beef is 50/50 for me - it takes a long time to chew it adequately so I eat it only rarely. Flaked white fish is safe but tuna can still bother me. Chili is a 'safe' meal staple. It can be made vegetarian simply by not adding meat. It can be more interesting by adding a variety of Beans and/or vegetables. My favorite recipe is: SPICY CHICKEN CHILI 1lb ground chicken or turkey (you can also use meat of your choice) Salt, pepper, other seasonings or herbs to taste (whatever you like) 1 packet chili seasoning 1 can tomato paste 1 can diced tomatoes 1 can black beans, undrained 1 can corn 1 cup salsa; mild, spicy, or hot Cook ground meat till almost done (add salt, pepper, etc while cooking), mix in chili seasoning, mix in tomato paste, add all other ingredients and mix well. Cover and simmer on low for 15 minutes. Eat as is or top w/shredded cheese. Variations - omit meat and add a variety of colorful beans or legumes; add fresh chopped peppers, onions, other vegetables; get creative and come up w/your own variations. :-)

Id be interested in vegetarian and vegan options.

Would you all be interested in a forum where you could discuss vegetarian and vegan options without any pressure? We'd of course have an emphasis on getting in as much B12, Protein, etc. as possible but without the pressure thrown at us to have meat. I know I felt uncomfortable with my surgeon who always pushed those things or just Beans at me when I couldn't do them.

My favorite vegetarian recipes are Indian. I recommend you get an Indian cookbook, write down the spices used most often & go to an Indian ethnic market. The spices are sold by the bag; just store them in a container that closes tightly and away from the light. Don't forget the fresh cilantro-- makes a huge difference! Have fun! -
I'm 7 months post op from bypass surgery and I'm still not able to tolerate meats unless it's ground meat. I'm thinking about changing to a vegetarian diet and was hoping to get some meal suggestions... I also do not tolerate fish well... Are there any good vegetarian dishes that anyone can recommend?

Vegan post op diet?
WhoKnows replied to shrinkingjill's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think being lacto-ovo vegetarian isn't a problem as long as you don't have any major allergies or restrictions on anything other than meat, but I think cutting out dairy (especially whey protein) could be more difficult. My plan is to go vegan again when I get to maintenance, but in the mean time, I don't feel bad about some dairy and eggs (especially since my overall calorie intake is so low anyway). My personal tip: pumpkin seed Protein powder; it's great mixed in or sprinkled on anything savory, and the brand I use is a complete protein. I don't know if it's available in the US, but amazon.com has this one: http://www.amazon.com/Omega-Nutrition-Pumpkin-Protein-21-Ounce/dp/B004L3VLFK People will try and tell you that you need to eat meat, but (assuming, like I said, that you don't have a soy allergy or something similarly restrictive) they're wrong. In fact, my surgeon even recommends meat eaters stay away from meat until two months post-op anyway (though he does have us on purees quite quickly). And now cue the anti-vegan comments... -

3 1/2 years out.... at one point I gained 22 pounds.... had not reached goal yet but close. I then got it off, and have been in maintinance for about 7 months. (It took me around 3 years to get to goal) I have a 3 pound bounce range, do pop over the top now and then, get back on track by 5:2 style fasting a day or two a week I work out 4-5 days a week... walking, dancing, kayak and/or gardening.

I can eat LOTS more...when i want more I eat more fruits and veggies... and dont forget the Protein. My will power comes and goes, I weigh every day, and post everything I eat 95% of the time every day... I take my Vitamins and did this as a vegetarian. When I pop out of the "zone" its because of too much junk... full sugar cake, Cookies, pizza.... I can eat healthier versions of these in moderation and maintain.

Soy is also a problem for me. Same for lots of food restrictions. What about eating as vegetarian as possible? That's what I do.
-
My NUT said it would be very difficult for me to be vegetarian immediately post-surgery (I had been looking into it as an option) because I had a partial thyroidectomy a few years ago, and can't tolerate soy products of any kind. I know there are other protein substitute options out there, but since my food options are already limited, I'm not going to worry about it for the time being. Maybe once I hit maintenance and have a little more freedom of choice, I'll explore the issue again.

Staple foods for the liquid phase (phase 1)
jlt6187 replied to mistysj's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I had surgery about a week ago to repair a hiatal hernia, and at the same time my doctor performed an imbercation-basically he folded a bit of each side of my stomach over and sewed the edges down to reduce the sides of my stomach. Apparently it's a relatively new procedure for weight loss that they use for less extreme cases, which is leading to me having some trouble researching it. I'm assuming that my recovery will be similar to that of other weight-loss surgeries, as I had to do do two weeks pre-op resitrictive dieting, 3 days post-op Clear Liquids, and two weeks full liquid before moving on to soft/mushy foods. I'm having a really difficult time getting my required Protein. I barely want to drink Water or broth, much less a Protein shake. Yesterday was the day I was able to get the most protein so far since surgery-about 25g-and I woke up today feeling so sick to my stomach that all I've had is about 2 cups of clear broth. My protein goal is 60g, but the doctor said if I can make it to 40, that would be okay. I'm lactose intolerant (I was pre-surgery as well), vegetarian (though I will eat some fish), and can't have any artificial sweeteners. I was only able to find one Protein powder without any artificial sweeteners in it, and I mix it with almond milk. I think the thickness of the Protein shakes is what is grossing me out right now, but I don't know how else to get my protein in liquid form. No matter what I mix with this powder, it's really thick (even water. yuck). Help please! Also, side note (sorry this is so long!), did anyone have issues with a fever post-op? They kept me in the hospital 3 nights instead of 1 because I had a slight fever and low oxygen. Since coming home, I've consistantly had a low fever (99.3ish), usually in the evenings. The doctor said not to worry about a fever unless it was 101 or above. Is this common? -
Vegans that force their animals to also be vegan piss me off and I want to turn them in for animal cruelty. Animal ARE NOT VEGANS!! Yes, they can eat some fruits and veggies, but their bodies are designed for meat and they need meat. Just because you're vegan or vegetarian, it does not mean you don't have weight problems. Sometimes, the problems can be from health issues, such as thyroid problems. With me, they couldn't ever tell what my problem was, because I was eating healthy and all tha jazz. Now, a lot of my family has thyroid issues, and sometimes, you can have it and the tests say that you don't. My doctor thought that could be the case. Now, I'm not saying I was perfect on the vegetarian diet. I'd eat really awful foods and in bulk sometimes, such as breads and pastas. As everyone on this site knows, BREAD IS EVIL!! After getting the VSG, I've ate a helluva lot better, and I'm trying to always eat better. After I got the surgery, I had to eat meat for awhile, but I ONLY ate chicken, turkey, and tuna from the can. Now, I do not eat ANY meat / fish at all. I have been considering drinking chicken broth for Protein, but it kinda feels like I'm cheating my vegetarian lifestyle. Why did I ever choose to vegetarian? One summer, while I was staying with my older sister, I told her I was having stomach pains a lot, but that day I wasn't having any. She asked me what I normally ate when I had pains and what I ate that day. She pointed out how every time I mentioned I ate meat, my stomach hurt. My stomach didn't hurt, because on that day, I had not ate any meat products. She told me to try being vegetarian, and see if it helped with my stomach and digestion. In one week, I lost 8 lbs and my stomach / digestion felt SO much better.

@@ekmw, I'm currently a lacto-ovo vegetarian, but I plan on going back to vegan once I reach maintenance. If you want some info, tips or to recipe swap, just send me a PM. It doesn't seem like many of the vegetarian/vegan sub-groups are very active on here unfortunately.

I was always under the impression that Vegeterians or Vegans had their weight under control. Most that I have known have always givien me the my body is a temple speech. Or that I am unethical because I enjoy tastey animals. Could it be both alternative diets substitute animal products with sugar and high carbos? Just curious not being judgemental. Being honest, I can fully understand the benifits to being a vegetarian, but the vegans I know drive me nuts and dont have a clue when it comes to the science behind nutrition. I personally know a Vegan that is forcing her dog to be one also. Luckly her mom sneaks the dog meat.

Howdy!!! Send me a message and I'll give you my email if you like. Let me clarify: I can and do eat chicken and turkey but it isn't a lot. I've had a few reactions to chicken at times and have to bug off. I'm in a lot of vegetarian/vegan groups. Plus my Protein powders, etc. are vegan/vegetarian. I've got problems with red meat, fish/shellfish, nuts/tree nuts and dairy, but I know a lot of what the "gang" uses in terms of stuff you could have.

I was wondering if there were anyone out there who had the VSG and is vegetarian or vegan? Before the surgery, I was vegetarian for over 3 years. I have recently returned to the vegetarian lifestyle. I wanted to gain other Protein ideas & general food ideas. Thanks

Practically a vegetarian not by choice ...in the end it's still worth it ...we will all get through it

I am a vegetarian, and therefore I don't know of too many dense protein solids. I can't eat too much of tofu.

The further out you are from surgery, the more you'll find your restriction varies depending on what you're eating. A serving of chicken breast or a turkey meatball or two will fill me up and stave off hunger longer than a serving of greek yogurt or veggies, or cheese. Dense Protein is your friend. I don't see any meat products in your list of what you're eating, are you a vegetarian? You may be able to get advice from other vegetarians on how to maximize satisfaction with particular foods.
