    Alcohol Is The Enemy-HELP!

Alcohol is the enemy and you are putting yourself in this position by consuming so early on, That was one thing the Dr. stressed during the preop meeting and that it should be minimal to avoided completely. Try as shea2 suggested and drink an alternative. I know it may be harder especially if it is one thing you don't want to give up, but think about all you have put into this surgery already and what you want the end result to be before deciding to wiggle your way around it. You know the effects it has on you so you really need to try and avoid it.

    Alcohol Is The Enemy-HELP!

For the time being do not have the ingredients for the cocktails in your home, assuming that is where you are drinking them. If out and about, have some low calorie non alcohol alternatives instead.
  5. Alcohol at only two month post op?!? Alcohol isn't the enemy, you're being your own worst enemy. You know what you need to do to fix the problem. Stop drinking alcohol. Alcohol should not be consumed for at least 6 months post op. You're putting yourself at risk for a whole bunch of problems drinking so early on. Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  6. Friends, I am a little over two months post-op. Overall, I have done extremely well, down 60lbs, feeling great and looking forward to achieving my goals. Unfortunately, I have been occasionally having a cocktail while watching football which disinhibits my appetite control and I wind up eating more than I should or can. Anyone have any suggestions to address this problem? Thanks very much.

1 year Post Op (BUT ISSUES...)

Not a RNYer so take with a grain of salt... 1. Maybe electrolytes are off, especially potassium. Try that first to see if it improves. 2. Alcohol is now absorbed differently creating the possibility of a new addiction where none resided before. Some call it transfer addiction but it can be just plain addiction too. Careful. 3. Patches and gummies. If you can set it and forget it or it tastes like candy you may be more inclined to take them. 4. Contact your team for everything big or small. Even if it's just an email. They should be able to guide you. Demand it. I'm sure you paid good money for optimal health. Congrats! You look great and deserve to feel that way too. Safe Journey!

Glass of wine week 5 post op

Well more than that, not that I'm a saint about anything, but IMHO we all need to try to make the next best choice from here on out. Doesn't mean we will win, cuz I can guarantee we won't win 100% of the time. But each time we DO win the test, we get stronger and are one step closer to redefining a lifetime of bad habits that got us a lifetime invitation to the Obesity Ball. You know? And you know, there are a host of reasons why alcohol isn't a great choice, but 5 weeks out it's even worse: 1. Wine = highly acidic and could increase acid and possibly cause a small ulcer at the operation suture line. Big time Billy-badass probs then. 2. Empty calories that disrupts fat burning mode in some way I can't fully explain to you. 3. Your tummy is still pretty raw in there. God! Imagine having to confess why you're hemorraging! Cuz alcohol thinned your blood too much now your bleeding at your incision sight. 4. Then there's the whole transfer addiction thing...and I'm not qualified to talk about that... But hell...I'm just a shmoe on the internet and am not qualified to talk about any of this stuff! Lol!
  9. My work colleague told me she was a heavy tailgater prior to WLS and she's now 1 year post and has been known to blackout after 1 drink. I think your decision to abstain is wise. If you're going to experiment with alcohol better to do it in the privacy of your own home. (Where no one has blackmail pictures 😂🤣)
  10. Well since you are preop I would think it would be up to you unless you are on your preop diet to shrink your liver in which case it is not allowed. In my understanding, alcohol affects post op BS patients differently and it is important to be really careful until you know how it affects you. I have heard of some people developing alcoholism after BS. I personally have drank alcohol in moderation since age 18 and continue to do so and I have not encountered any problems with it.

Glass of wine week 5 post op

I have a “mock” wine sometimes during the week when I want a glass of wine but really don’t want alcohol. It satisfies me for some reason. I use cherry juice, not from concentrate, and water. In a red wine glass. Maybe it will work for you too. Cheers! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. So I’m back after all my tales of woe today I have to bring my kids to a Halloween party. Interestingly I have ZERO interest in candy or any other treats so yay for that! I know alcohol is discouraged post op is it because people have a higher likelihood of becoming alcoholics? Would one glass of wine be disastrous? I don’t drink often but the stress of everything is making a glass of wine very appealing...
  13. Today was my first set of appointments to start the process; nurse practitioner, dietician/nutritionist, and physical therapist. In addition, I got my bloodwork and EKG done. I already have a mammogram and colonoscopy on record. I went in with a positive attitude and I think that helped, I was more excited than nervous. I mentioned that I had been reading the forums on this site to learn what I could and I think it helped me comprehend the massive amount of information I was given because I sort of studied ahead, plus, they gave me a notebook The dietician noted that I take a lot of supplements, and she stressed that I will be restricted to taking only a few after surgery, at 200% the regular dose; multi-vitamin that includes iron and other minerals and B12 sublingual at night, calcium citrate 500mg liquid or chew three times a day, plus vitamin d, liquid or small gelcaps. I forgot to ask about my Wellbutrin and allergy medicine. Oh well, there's time! A lot of people in these forums say NOT to try the drinks, food, or supplements pre surgery, but my dietician encouraged me to try different things to find what I like (even though my preferences may change post surgery). I have already purchased some Protein20 drinks, Premier Protein shakes, sugar free Gatorade, Propel electrolyte water, bone broth, and some Millie's sipping broth samples. My choice is the gastric sleeve but they will probably try to convince me that the bypass is the best option (and "gold standard" as I keep reading everywhere). I was scoped in July and they found a hiatal hernia, some non-bloody ulcers, and Schatzki's ring. I was instructed to continue with the Omeprazole in order to continue to calm my esophagus and stomach. I hope they let me stick with the sleeve, I don't want to deal with malabsorption issues and I prefer being able to take NSAIDS. I have enough dumping from having my gallbladder removed and being sensitive to grease/oil. Today while at the hospital, I had a long break so I had brunch consisting of an egg-salad sandwich (which they said was freshly made that morning) and half a bag of chips. Let's just say I had to visit the restroom 4-5 times during the rest of my time there, ugh! The insurance company has told my hospital (OHSU Portland Oregon) that the procedure is covered, but have not yet responded regarding what they require from me. The hospital requires two nutrition classes and a few more tests. My EKG came back "borderline" so I am being referred to a cardiologist to make sure everything is ok. I made my two nutrition class reservations and psychological evaluation appointment, as well as my sleep study consult. I'm 58 and have had a hysterectomy (1 ovary left) so I'm not required to get a pap smear, review birth control, and they're not requiring that I be screened for drugs & alcohol (I quit smoking 31 years ago). I'm hoping to have it all done by February, but won't know what else I need to do until my insurance company forks over some information! This facility only requires 24 hours of clear liquids before surgery (yay). While I was given my diet information, I think I'm going to slowly incorporate better habits and definitely pay attention to my protein and fluid intake for now. Since my BMI is slightly over 41, I was cautioned not to lose more than 10 pounds because it would put me below the required 40 BMI. That is unless I end up being diagnosed with sleep apnea (I have high cholesterol); neither joint pain or depression qualify as co-morbidities. My lab results have already been provided and they found my ferritin to be low, so I need to begin taking carbonyl iron with vitamin C right away. I've read a lot of different posts of people sharing their program information, so here is my post-surgical diet information from my booklet: STAGE ONE - first day following surgery - CLEAR LIQUIDS STAGE TWO - starting day two post surgery, for 14-21 days - FULL LIQUIDS STAGE THREE - starting 2-3 weeks post surgery, for approximately 6 weeks (depending on how the patient is doing) - SOFT FOOD STAGE FOUR - approximately two months post surgery - SOLID FOOD (low sugar & low fat) Over the weekend I cleaned out my cupboards of a bunch of food and food-like substances; what wasn't expired I took to work. Fed the crows some expired cereal and crackers. Haven't tackled the freezer yet. Since my surgery isn't scheduled yet I have plenty of time! I just wanted to thank everyone who posts their experiences and questions and advice, I think people are very supportive here for the most part!

  15. While cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and all-cause mortality risk is reduced after gastric bypass, the following "cons" were also revealed in a 2018 European study*: . -gallstone and gallbladder disease -gastrointestinal ulcer / reflux -bowel obstruction -abdominal pain -anemia -malnutrition -psychiatric diagnoses -alcohol abuse . *some of these conditions are short-term complications . https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2018-10/d-nsr092818.php

    Social outings suck now

Temporary thing. Once you're a while out you will be able to eat decent amounts of food and you will (most likely) be able to have some alcohol if you wish. I attended a party just yesterday, yummy food buffet style. No alcohol this time though because the party was in the boonies and I had to drive home. Interestingly enough I feel like having a hangover today anyway, lol.
  18. Agreed on getting the bad food out of the house. You won't be tempted to eat it if you keep it on hand. Think back to when you first got back on solid foods, what were your typical snacks like within the bounds of your new lifestyle? Were there ones you enjoyed that are also healthy? Try to keep those on hand instead. But also try to find an outlet for your stress that isn't food related. My personal thing is video games. It's how I unwind when I've had a rough day (it's also REALLY helpful in distracting you from head hunger). Get absorbed in a book, watch a movie or a tv show that you like, listen to music and dance like a maniac in the bathroom. Most of us got to where we are because we turned to food to heal our bad feelings and it is very much an addiction just like alcoholism. Breaking that cycle is a huge part of being successful with this surgery.

    Social outings suck now

I have no advice because this is a huge issue for me too. I was sleeved 8/15. I get so frustrated going out to dinner and only having a couple bites and no alcohol, then just sit there forever while everyone else finishes eating. I hate it. It makes be very angry.

    I don't think I'm ready ):

I understand what you are going through and everyone has a different experience but for me, my only regret is that I waited until I was 44 to do it. Yes, there is a lifestyle change but it may not have to be as drastic as you think. About 6 Month post op, I started drinking alcohol again, carrfeine, carbonated beverages. The biggest challenge is just learning to adapt to the new way your body tolerates your intake. Best of luck to you!

    I don't think I'm ready ):

This is a life changing decision that takes time to wrap your brain around. Nothing wrong with wanting to try another path. It took me about 5 years where I was trying the idea on and thinking thru it. I talked to friends and people who had lost 100 lbs with straight diet and exercise, who’d had a lap band the revision to sleeve, plus a couple of normal sleeve. All were honest with me on their struggles, setbacks and what choices they make every day. I’m only at month 6 and the things to stay away from were already not part of my regular diet pre surgery. I don’t really drink alcohol or soda but giving up apple cider now that’s been hard this fall. I’m still wrapping my head around baking and sweets cause I love to bake. Take your time to be sure this is truly what you want.

    I don't think I'm ready ):

I wish I could introduce you to my niece. She had bypass surgery in 2012 at the tender age of 20. At 1st she questioned herself about it and now after losing over 200 lbs she wouldn't have it any other way. She's happy she's now able to do things she never thought possible. The crazy thing is she eats like a grown man smoke and still drink alcohol. She has an amazing social life just like a young adult would. So yes you may have to give up the things you love for a short time but soon you will be able and free to do as you please without gaining any weight back. My poor niece wants to gain 10 lbs but can't because every time she put on a few pounds it fall right back off. She is now 26 and she's so in love with the new her. It's ok to second guess yourself but don't worry about it. You will have your life back sooner than you no it. This time it will be the new healthier smaller you. Totally normal to get nervous as surgery gets closer. But honestly the things you think you can’t live without don’t feel that important anymore. I know it seems weird to say you won’t miss alcohol, but I totally you won’t. You’ll be so busy with a million other things, you won’t even think about it.
  24. Pouch reset is a fad diet; crash diets never work and is not the right approach post-WLS. Instead, work with a therapist to resolve your head issues, then focus on the bariatric “rules;” dense protein first followed by non-starchy vegetables, use a scale to measure portions, don’t drink during meals or 30 mins afterwards, track what you eat with a food journal or an app like MyFitnessPal, drink a minimum of 64 oz of water a day, cut out processed food & junk, no alcohol, etc.

    I don't think I'm ready ):

I would definitely not get the surgery now if you are feeling this way. To be honest, I had no idea how restricting the surgery would be. I thought I was going to have no cravings or hunger. Therefore, I was so excited and ready. I am 25 years old. I got the surgery on 08/17/2018. Let me just tell you, I am still dealing with food depression. I have no way to comfort myself now. I used to do it with food and alcohol after a long week of work. Now I cannot do that. Therefore, this tells myself I was not mentally prepared for the surgery. It’s too late now. I am stuck with the exhaustion and depression and boring life. I am stuck with this fear of food and fear or of gaining weight back. Still have an unhealthy relationship with food, but now it’s not eating. Ugh just terrible. I was a binge eater, though. Good luck. It is your choice. I am happy I got it because I am losing weight and feeling more confident. I hated being super fat. I felt disgusting after the fact I ate. So yes I am happy I did this, but it sucks at the same time. I think surgery is harder than actually dieting because you have no choice on how much to eat and you can’t have your cheat day because it all just hurts the little sleeve. I am just ranting now Bc I’m tired. Best of luck!!!
