  1. Hello, I just joined and wanted to introduce myself to you. I am a 42 year old wife and mother of 4 teenagers. I am now approx 125lbs overweight. And I am finally ready to admit for the first time in 20 years. I can't do this by myself. Looking back on one of my old journals about 3 years ago, I actually started this process of possible bariatric surgery to help me with my Quest for better health. I had the consultation scheduled, but after a month i had lost 8lbs on my own. so i called and canceled. well, i am now at least 50lbs heavier than i was 3 years ago. so what will happen to me in 3 more years? will the weight keep increasing?? For the past 3 years i've had asthmatic type symptoms that landed me in the hospital, this past year i was also in for stomach problems, i've been dealing with high bloodpressure for the past 5 years, now my knees are bothering me so much it is slowing down my exercise schedule. I have a family history of obesity and complications. 3 out of 5 brothers had or have had 150-200lbs. to loose at one given time. 3 of my brothers are type II diabetics. My Sister has at least 50lbs to loose. My dad died at age 52 from a 4th heart attack, my mom died at age 58 being at least 150lbs over weight.... let me be honest with myself......... this doesn't look really good for my future!!! I've tried weight watchers, atkins, personal dietitions, personal trainers, and although i can loose weight...... i seem to stall at the 20lb mark :scared2:! So on June 10th i go to the class at Woman's Magee Hospital in Pittsburgh Pa. and I'll go from there..... i am scared and excited at the same time, I want to hurry up and slow down............ I hope i find support and information on this website. thanks for listening

    QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

My decision on lap band was for a few reasons . It is less invasive. I feel it is better to lose the weight more gradually. recovery time s faster. Less complications. It is reversible. With lap band all you have to take is a good multi vitamin.

    Gas pain is no joke!

Veggies can be difficult to digest this early out. You also have to be careful with seeds (zucchini, cucumbers) as they can get stuck in your staples or incision and cause complications. Try sticking with things with Protein such as cottage cheese, refried Beans with cheese, strained or pureed Soups (no rice or pasta), greek yogurt, etc. Be sure to get plenty of fluids. You may still need to supplement with Protein drinks or shakes. Be sure to bring Water and protein Snacks to school. Good luck.

Going back to work after vsg

I could have gone back after two weeks. Some people need a lot longer. You can't predict complications.

    Starting liquid diet

On my liquid diet I was able to have tomato soup, soups with a cream base, French onion soup, jello made with fruit juice, smoothies, and anything without chunks. My surgeon had me substitute one meal with liquid starting 3 weeks out, 2 meals on second week before, and then three liquid meals a day the week before. I didn't have to do total clear until 1 day prior. I had gastric bypass on 12/16/14, and had absolutely no complications. My liver was shrunken, so the liquid diet did work. Good luck!
  6. So I had turned 30 in September and was sleeved on November 14. I am hoping for a new lease on life. I started at my highest weight 339. Throughout all pre op weigh ins nd liquid pre op diet I went to 331, 321 and I was sleeves weighing 321 that morning. I went today for my first post op visit- 301!!!!!!! I am almost out of the 3's!! I have had no complications. No vomiting. No gerd or reflux. Truthfully I feel awesome! I NEVER feel hungry also. I take my antacid pill in the am and I am still sleeping on my back, which I really don't like, so at night I take 20ml of pain mess to put me to sleep while ok not comfy on my back and that's it!!! Normal day I start with pull and some broth if a can of soup(lentil, minestrone, chikarina, pot roast) and my bf has the food part of the soup to save money. Then ill sip water. Crystal light or G2 from Gatorade until I feel like j should eat again hours later. I will have a sugar free jello or half of a sugar free pudding. Continue the sipping and always making sure to walk walk walk! I barely have calories Nd it doesn't effect me. I just bought tuna chunk lite in water in those packets with no draining needed. I'm going to start having one a day at least bc there are 18 gms of protein in each!! That's awesome!! I hope this story is showing great results Nd my ultimate goal is to hit 180 pounds before I turn 31. I want to be beautiful for engagement and wedding. I look forward to great stories and replies :-) good luck to all!
  7. I contacted Dr. Michael Orris of Weightloss Institute of Arizona, who is known for taking complicated cases. On the website, they stated that they do an aftercare program for patients who have had procedures outside of the company, but they mostly spoke of the lapband. I emailed them and received a return stating they will do after care for patients sleeved in Mexico. I was quoted $500, but I'm not sure if that's one year or 3 years. They do on-site leak tests (as far as I know are included in price) and have a 24 hour emergency help line as long as you are a patient there. He's not listed as performing the sleeve, but I did read he has repaired leeks. The doctor seems highly qualified and is on tons of different boards around the valley. I'm requesting more info, but I would recommend people do their own inquiries in interested. Good luck, hope this atleast helps someone. http://www.wliaz.com/ nfo@wliaz.com (480) 829-6100 (Phone) (480) 319-2028 (480) 446-9475 (Facsimile)

    Update

I know I haven’t posted in awhile but I’ve been so busy I’m a month and a few weeks post op my surgery was July 18th I weighed 287 that morning Im 264 as of today no complications or diarrhea...everything went as planned I was even able to pass my swallowing test with out throwing up...I did have some nausea when switching to soft and solid food but nothing major and I’ve thrown up 1 time I tried to eat spam and my pouch didn’t like it lol but I’ve learned my full feelings and I pretty much get the hiccups when I full now and I always eat my protein first to fill up fast I usually eat every 2 to 3 hours and I drink about 4 to 5 bottles of what a day I will say I’ve tried to eat takeout and it’s not the same I get full way to fast and gassy and it’s hurts anything that’s processed doesn’t go down as easy and takes forever to digest so take out food is a big no right and cards usually get stuck and take forever to go down to as well but I know that’s going to change over the next few months i just started working out a few days ago trying to get back into a routine I’m happy with my overall decision and glad I did this for myself I’m hoping to get down to 220 by the end of the year

    band to sleeve

I had band to sleeve surgery in November. I had my band placed in 2005 and had nothing but problems. But the Dr. deflated the band about a month preop and did the removal and sleeve in the same surgery. It was a difficult surgery for me due to scar tissue from the band and from a previous open spleenectomy from years ago. I don't know about your insurance requirements but mine was horrible. They approved the surgery and after the fact told me there was a 25,000 cap per lifetime for bariatric care. I had a four day stay in the hospital due to complications which resulted in a 100,000 bill~ that I'm responsible for....

    Consultation

Hi Guys, I'm in New Orleans, LA going for my consultation in the morning. I'm starting at 425 and had an accident with injury 2 years ago that has stunted my life in a lot of ways. I'm nervous about tomorrow. I am a smoker and know I have to quit. I'm paying out of pocket so I'm hoping to schedule this in mid January. I guess my questions are these. 1) When paying out of pocket, what tests etc did you have to go through? 2) How quickly were you able to schedule it? 3) If you were a smoker, did you quit? If you didn't what complications did you have? 4) What questions should I have ready for the doctor? Thanks in advance for any answers I get. Sent from my SM-G920P using the BariatricPal App

    Opinions

I think it’s important to stick to the plan that was provided by your team. You’re still healing and you don’t want to risk anything and have complications. It can be frustrating to see other people eat ahead of you on a different plan than yours even if you had similar surgeries and surgery dates. Hang in there, you can do it
  12. I was banded may 2013. My first year went like textbook. i lost a total of 81 lbs and felt great. But than problems started and july of 2014 my band was emptied and stayed empty for a year. My surgeon didn't want to put any fill in do to the complications i had. We discussed revision and on july 31,2015 i was revised to a gastric bypass. Surgery was difficult due to adhesions and scar tissue. When the band was placed i had gone to surgery to have a bypass but that surgeon couldn't do it do to the scarring. When i was in the recovery room the first words out of my mouth were ,what type of surgery? if he couldnt do the bypass i signed papers for a sleeve. but he was successful. I was so happy. post surgery i have had no complications. Have lost 27 lbs in 26 days. and am doing well with my new way of eating.

    Sleep Apnea tests?

The only effect my apnea treatment had on my banding process was positive. My surgeon required that I have my CPAP at least a week before surgery and that I bring it to the hospital...if you have apnea, the CPAP helps mitigate risks of complications post-surgery.
  14. Have you considered getting the gastric sleeve? Especially since you are self pay. Don't forget that with the band, you will have to pay for fills until you get to your "sweet" spot. You will also need to have follow up EGDs yearly to check for erosions, etc. Lastly, contrary to what some say, the band isn't always "reversable". I spent nearly $40,000.00 after I had the band dealing with the problems that the band caused (this is not including the original surgery which my insurance paid for). I am not trying to scare you but just think about it. The sleeve is the same thing as a partial gastrectomy, which they have been doing for years for other issues such as cancer, severe ulcers, etc. It is considered "experimental" for weight loss because of the "newness" of doing it for weight loss. Kind of like when they use a medication for one thing and then a few years later find out that it helps other diseases than just those that it was approved for. There are many people who I know that have had "partial gastrectomies" for years. The only problem they have is that they are "skinny". Once you get the sleeve, you are done. No going back and paying for "fills". No having multiple surgeries to correct adhesions and other issues caused by the band. No paying for yearly EGDs. No worrying about finding another surgeon to take care of you and do the fills if you move away or your surgeon decides to "retire" or close his practice. I could go on and on but I won't. As I said, I'm not trying to scare you or piss on your parade so to speak. Just giving you something to think about. This is especially true since you are self pay. Just trying to let you know that there is a cheaper, safer way to achieve weight loss through surgery. Just go to verticlesleevetalk.com and obesityhelp.com to the revision sections/complications section and read, read, read, read before you have your surgery.

    Help Feeling Sick!!

Call your surgeon's office. You are at higher risk for respiratory complications, and anesthesia may not want to put you under. I caught a cold the Friday before my Tuesday banding (3/25/08) and was sure it was nothing major, and that it would be over by Monday (it was). I called the surgeon's office and they postponed my surgery a week. I had been on a liquid pre-op diet for two weeks, and it wasn't enough time to go off it and back on, so I ended up on that an extra week, so by surgery day I had already lost 35 pounds. Don't put yourself at risk. Call.:cursing:
  16. Hi everyone! I am almost finished with my 6 month supervised diet that is required by BCBS AL My general practice MD told me to print my medical records from my patient portal online so I have the 3 years of height/weight records that I need (Hopefully the surgeon's office will accept a printout). Realistically, I don't think I have any reason to worry that I won't be approved but my anxiety is getting the best of me lately. I am getting so close to being finished with all the requirements and my anxiety is making me a nervous wreck. I am either constantly worrying that I won't get approved or worrying that I will get approved but have complications. I have called both my insurance company and my insurance coordinator but haven't heard back yet (and it's been over a week). The waiting and not knowing part is the worst part for me. Has anyone else dealt with similar feelings this close to surgery? I'm just hoping to find some words of encouragement from fellow patients. Thanks in advance!
  17. Just had my AGB surgery on May 1st. Not too many complications. I've lost 24 lbs. Two Questions: I'v had some side stitch pain, the kind you get if you run for a long time, has anyone else had this problem? Second Question: Just started my BirthControl pill again, has anyone had any complications from taking it?

    Blood Sugars Going Up

That's great news!!! I have to agree with you...I was doubting my doctor because my weight wasn't coming down. He kept telling me it was due to the complications after surgery but I didn't believe him....thought I was the only person that surgery didn't work for. Now, all of a sudden I am dropping weight like crazy!! Guess they know more than me!

    Band Slipped?

I am under the impression that if your band slips you are not able to keep anything down, even water. You might want to go to the lap band complications forum and read some of the posts from people who have had a slippage.

    Surgery Question

As a surgical nurse, I can tell you that both of the things that you mentioned are a normal part of surgery requiring general anesthesia. A sore throat is normal post op, if that is the complication that you are referring too.I hope this info. helps~

    Band to sleeve on 8/9/13

I'm almost 3 weeks post op from band revision. Absolutely no complications, however, it was a more painful recovery than lapband 4 yrs ago. It might have something to do with the fact that it took my dr 30 mins to dig my band out of my stomach. Moving onto soft foods in a week (still on full liquids). You'll do fine. Some people say that it doesn't hurt as much as the band. Mine definitely did. Good luck!
  23. I have Ulcerative Colitis and had gastric bypass surgery on January 23rd. No complications and have been successful. In fact, my UC has never been so controlled. To date, I am down 55lbs. Happy to answer any specific questions you may have. Best of luck on your journey.

    Surgery Question

They put the legs wraps on me during surgery prep, but they didn't inflate them while I was awake. They were off by the time I got to recovery. The only way I knew that I ever had the breathing tube was because my throat was scratchy. Waking up was easy. My first words were "I need to burp"... and to this day, I'm still burping. I was loaded into the car within an hour after surgery, so I had no complications. Good luck!

    Starting this process

I got banded in April '06. I've lost 90lbs. It was the BEST decision of my life. I was sooooo nervous wondering if I was making the right decision. I was self pay and my husband was reluctantly going along with my decision. I felt a lot of pressure. I have not looked back. It has changed my life. This year I will finally post before and after pictures. I've gone from a size 18/20 to a size 6/7. Very few complications other than my port practically sticks out now that I'm so thin. That's a small price to pay though. I've had very few complications. No, I don't get to eat everything I want to eat but isn't that the purpose of the band?? Recovery time .... what recovery time? The day of the surgery I recovered in the hotel room and the next day my husband and I were up walking around Tijuana. That was the only recovery time I needed. Afterward I went sight-seeing in San Diego for a couple days before returning home. The 'gas' people talk about is not gas like burping or farting but shoulder pain. I believe it's described as the gas used to inflate your stomach for the surgery or something like that. I bought Gas-X strips to help with the pain and was fine. Be sure to pack those if you have the surgery done. Hope info from someone 5 years post op helps a little. Wishing you the very best in your decision. I know you'll do what's right for you! Lynn
