  1. This is not the case. NSAIDs don't increase the risk of ulcers because they go through your stomach and irritate it directly. They work, in part, by blocking an enzyme called Cox-1, which is required for your stomach to produce its protective mucus lining. Less lining, greater risk of ulcer. Injectable NSAIDs do this the same as oral ones. If you can't find any other alternatives that work, there are prescription NSAIDs called Cox-2 inhibitors which don't do that. They might be an option if you take them with another drug to reduce the risk of ulcer, but I haven't found any research in the long-term use of these meds after bariatric surgery. (As in, there's a single study where they used celecoxib peri-operatively for pain control was published in 2019 and that's the sum total of PubMed results.)

looks like the standard BMI range. The PA at my clinic said bariatric patients often look 10 lbs lighter than they are because even though we lose bone and muscle along with fat, you're always going to have more bone and muscle than someone who's never been obese. You needed that "infrastructure" to hold up all that weight - and even though you lose a lot of it while you're losing fat, you're still going to have more/heavier bones and muscles than someone who's always been normal weight. So long way of saying, my clinic is fine with people who end up "overweight" or "class I obese" (which is actually not very obese - we're talking like 20 or 30 lbs). They'd consider that pretty normal.

I just had mine on 10/4. Recovery is going well for me so far. I feel like the worst part was the gas pain right after surgery. I spend 2 nights at the hospital because I was not getting all my fluids every hour. Oh head hunger is a real thing, any tips on how to deal with that?

  5. I'm 2 years out I've had my ups and downs of weight loss. I've have worried daily in my success of weight loss. On how many calories, rite vitamins, exercise, list goes on. I may have been the lucky one or am I? I went thru the phase of regret not able to enjoy the food I once loved. But I loved loosing the weight. Slowly. Sex drive went down hill. Hair falling out skin crepping. " Blood levels are normal" . Started out with small weight loss goals. Reached my goals. Over and over again my goal weight was 125. I told my self I have to stick to a healthy weight for me . Not what the experts say I should weigh. Then it was a goal of 115. in my head I'm not satisfied I'll do another goal of 110. So I decided it's time to maintain my weight or gain 10 pounds back. Since I'm now 100 lbs. I'm trying to gain weight. And I'm struggling!! I want to gain. should I eat the three C's cake, cookies, ice cream? Of course not what are healthy fattening foods? The positives. Looking good feeling good.

Day 4 post op vsg over here. It hurts less today to walk and move around. I slept in my bed for the first night instead of the recliner. I started my morning off with half a fairlife protein shake (this next part is probably TMI, sorry 💩) and about 10 minutes later was struck with the most intense diarrhea of my life! I'm talking doubled over, whole body sweating, crying in stomach cramp agony. It was my first post-op bowel movement, and may have been worse because I also had my gallbladder removed. It was followed by an emotional breakdown where I just sat and cried and questioned every choice that led me to this moment. I don't regret having WLS, but I am having a difficult time reminding myself that there is a light at the end of this tunnel. A little tip I found (if your new stomach can tolerate cold liquid) is to freeze gatorade zero into popsicles! I ordered 4oz popsicle molds on Amazon and find it much easier to suck on a popsicle than sip 4oz right now.

Hi, I am new too. My ESG was on 10/7. But I was told NOT to weigh myself daily. It’s once a week, at a designated time / day, no cheating, no peeking at the presents before Christmas morning. It’s driving me batty from curiosity, but I am trying to comply because I understand the reasoning. So I am measuring my waist and upper arms obsessively instead, but it’s not the same. Also, 9-11 lbs in 12 days, heck yeah!!! Good job.

Don't feel discouraged. You're doing just fine. Fluctuating 2-even 5 lbs a day is normal at any weight. This has to do with water weight, food etc. It's best to weigh yourself first thing in the morning, before food or drink and most importantly only ONCE per week. You're still healing. This was a big surgery. But most of all, Youre on track! Have you ever lost 8 to 10 lbs in one week before this? be proud! If you obsess over the scale it will mess with your head. Do not compare any if your progress to other people, our journeys are different right down to our surgeon guidelines and food phases. For portion sizes, your body will tell you if youre pushing yourself too much. Start small and work your way up. Less is more right now, protein shakes are incredibly important to not lose muscle mass.

Hey folks! I am new here but just had my surgery on 10/3 and I'm STRUGGLING! I really misunderstood portions because I'm in the stage 2 diet and I know we can incorporate cottage cheese and ricotta. I fucked that one up and I think I've been drinking soups up to 6oz. It's very frustrating because I've been trying to do everything right. I have the food scale, a cup I use to measure liquids (its a glass thats used for measuring espresso, up to 4oz). Is anyone having trouble figuring out portions? I think I'm just so anxious about it I just feel like I don't know what I'm doing. I've gone back to protein shakes. I'm afraid of moving on to solids. I have also had the most difficult time figuring out when I'm hungry and when I'm full. I had pretty intense mental hunger which made me incredibly miserable. My stomach hurts from a drop. This sucks.... feeling discouraged. The scale is very confusing right now. I'm at day 12 and I was 299 and now I'm anywhere from 288-290 because it fluctuates so much. I think I've done it all wrong and want to just hide under my sheets!

Anyone else having to take carafate/sucralfate post op? I have the pills that I am supposed to dissolve in 10 ml of water. I get sick every time and I'm supposed to take it 4 times a day. O read where some aren't having to do this?

    October 2022 surgery support

I am scheduled for surgery TOMORROW! I am working my last day before I am out and cannot focus. I just happened to stumble on this group. I wish I would have known about it sooner! So my pre-op diet seems to be different than a lot of others. I am on 700-900 cal and 70g protein per day, no sugar or carbs. I was not put on a clear liquid or even liquid diet. Han anyone else experienced this? I am asking because I have been very strict over the last 10 days and have not lost any weight. I am nervous about eating once I get home. I ordered some bone broth from amazon but other than that I am not sure what else to plan to eat? I did get protein powder and protein water. Any suggestions on things I need to get in my house to prepare? Or at this point, I should say what should I have my husband pick up while I am in the hospital tomorrow night!? Thank you for any info you can provide.
  13. I love this post! I have a love/hate relationship with my old pictures. I really did not realize how big I was in the day to day until I saw pictures of myself. I knew my weight, but honestly didn't see such a HUGE person in the mirror. But always saw it in pictures, it was strange. Now, I see skinn(ier) in pictures but still see fat me in the mirror. I however love looking back at pictures because it "wows me". In 6 months I have lost 112 lbs and 143 since the start of my process. To look at pictures from last Christmas is amazing to me, that I can (or anyone) have such a drastic change in 10 months! Some people change so much I hardly recognize them in the "after" photo whereas others look the exact same but smaller. I was worried about this, I didn't want to not "look like me", if that makes sense. But then i saw a recent picture of me and my best friend that she posted on FB and I was like.. shiiitttt I don't look like me BUT oddly enough the smaller I get the more I look like my little brother who was the ONLY skinny person in my entire family and passed away in June. Then I thought it was my mind messing with me but then suddenly another friend and 2 family members commented on the picture stating how much I look like my brother now. I wanted to look like me, but if I have to change, I am 100% MORE THAN OK with me looking like my brother. ❤️

I've been lurking this forum for a long time now, both in my phase of questioning WLS as an option for me (for a good few years or more now on and off) and since I started the official process. Happy to say I have a surgery date set for October 20th. I'll be getting the sleeve done. Weirdly, this will also hopefully help resolve a couple of issues I didn't even know I had until recently due to required pre-op testing (such as mild delayed gastric emptying -- had to do a motility test pre-op which is how I found this out). I've been on the liquid skim milk diet since the 6th and it has been absolutely brutal for me. Making me do a motility test that required me to eat scrambled eggs and toast with strawberry jam 5 days into it was also pretty brutal in itself. I'm looking forward to my surgery though and I'm really looking forward to changing my life. Working out is really hard at my current weight and I'm looking forward to shedding a bit so I can get back to personal training. I've already dropped a good 10+ pounds since I started this process, looking forward to anymore I lose in the future. Grateful to be here!

    weight gain after DS

Hi, Everyone! I am a DS'er who had my surgery 8.5 years ago. I lost 50% of my excess body weight at the time but have lived in 5 different cities since (and may be moving again this summer!) and honestly was not able to really focus on my weight loss as much as I had hoped in light of all of the moves and a lot of life transitions (e.g., loss of both of my parents in my 30s, completing grad school, etc.) I have kept what I have lost off with minor regain and re-loss over the years (no more than 10 lbs) so have hovered around 215 lbs pretty consistently for 6 years. I decided to freeze my eggs since I still have not met that special someone, am 40 years old, and have had pcos since high school. Unfortunately, I am not responding well to the highest dose of follicle stimulating hormones the doctors are giving me. and they are expecting to be able to freeze only 2 eggs at most, which is even less than what they had originally anticipated based on my follicle count. The fertility team has suggested doing a medical weight loss program (injections like wegovy or mounjaro) to lose weight rapidly before doing another cycle as they have seen some patients respond much better to the meds after losing more weight. I'm certainly going to explore that avenue (there is one through the local hospital's bariatric surgery program) and i have also joined a bariatric surgery support group through the local hospital. i'm wondering if anyone here has considered injections after DS or if you have some advice for me for how to restart my weight loss as i've been trying to do so with just diet and exercise for almost a month now. i'm walking 45-90 mins a day and trying to eat a lot of protein. i've been eating minimal carbs -- just from fruits, veggies, and oatmeal but haven't been dropping weight. i assume my DS still works since i have still had foul smelling gas up until a month ago when i would eat stuff like sushi (the rice!) or a baguette at panera. Appreciate the advice! Highest Weight: 328 Weight at Surgery: 290 Current Weight: 215 Goal Weight: 140 (bmi of 25) but I would be thrilled to get to 165 (a bmi < 30)

    Liquid Diet PO

I use Unjury in my rotation too. I love the strawberry and I actually mix it with around 10 oz of the crystal light lemonade and have a strawberry lemonade. IT IS DELICIOUS! I use more lemonade to thin it out so it doesn't even have the shake thickness. Doesn't even taste like a shake, just like I am drinking a strawberry lemonade drink with bonus protein!

    Stall on loss

nope - "normal" WLS patients do not lose that much that quickly. Maybe if they started off at 600 lbs, but otherwise, no. You might find some "normal" WLS patients ("normal" as in starting off in the 200s or 300s - and maybe low 400s) who lose 30+ lbs the first month, but even that's not common - and they certainly wouldn't keep up that pace after the first month. I've been hanging out on bariatric forums for the eight or so years, and just based on posts I've read (which have been thousands), I'd say most of us lose around 15-25 lbs the first month, then about 10 lbs (give or take) a month for a few months - then it drops to around 5 lbs - then 2 lbs......then eventually stops. as far as not losing any weight the last 1.5 weeks, you're in the infamous three-week stall that most of us experience. I just did a search on it here on bariatricpal for you just a second ago. Here are the 17,501 (and no, I am NOT kidding) posts on the three week stall for your reading pleasure: https://www.bariatricpal.com/search/?q=three week stall
  18. Dunno why, but I just felt for oatmeal for breakfast this morning…which is weird because (1) I probably haven’t had oatmeal in probably 10+ years and (2) I don’t normally eat breakfast hahhaha Anyhoo, 260 calories for the bowl, ate roughly half. (Microwaved 1/3 cup steel cut oats with 1/2 cup water and 1/4 cup milk…topped with brown sugar, cinnamon, blueberries and pistachios) The after pic doesn’t look so great, sorry!
  19. My doctor recommended it! I have a couple of chronic illnesses & I've been on doctor monitored diets two times. My doctor noticed I dealt with a lot of stalls & my PCOS was not letting me workout & lose weight like normal. I managed to lose 40lbs during that time but with all of that effort I should have lost double. My doctor referred me to the Bariatric program, did a 10 week class & decided it was for me! I'm 2 weeks post-op, I'm hoping its the solution to my PCOS & that I finally get to slim down like I want to

I heard someone else say that she got some little 1-ounce cups and filled 6 of them. She lined them up in a row next to where she was sitting. Her goal was to drink 1 cup every 10 minutes. Doing this all day, she was drinking OVER the amount they wanted her to be getting in a day. Maybe give that a try?
  21. Hi Everyone, I’m 8 weeks post op and I’ve been having nausea throughout the day for about three weeks now. My doctor ordered zofran and I wouldn’t say it’s been helpful, the nausea still comes and goes all day or lasts for a few hours off and on. My mouth will just water terribly and it feels terrible and I don’t want to do anything because I feel sick. With the nausea came a bad taste in my mouth off and on and nothing tastes the same that I eat either. The thought of even my favorite foods sounds yuck. I’ve paid attention to try and pin point what is triggering the nausea but I see no rhyme or reason to it! (I take omeprazole 40 mg twice a day, which I’ve taken for 10+ years.) I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this, or has any thoughts? Is this normal? I’m a worrier so I worry something is wrong. thanks for the help!
  22. I gained like 10 lbs by post op day 3. lol but I expected it though, I had to get of my bp meds for a couple of days before my surgery (diuretic) and they really pumped me full of liquids (IV).

6 weeks post op ZERO WEIGHT LOSS AND DEPRESSED

i hate to ask, but since it was Mexico and they rushed you out… can you get an endoscopy to make sure that they did the correct procedure? a cup seems like a lot only a couple weeks out from surgery (i am pre op so don’t know from actual experience just reading up on it) … i have heard of issues with dental work in mexico not being as described- i would fear the same with surgery… also, from my experience maybe you need to look at macros… i reduced calorie count but didn’t really start big weight changes until i went low carb. it did not change my calorie count much (around 500 less) but severely reducing carbs made weight start to fall off… (41 lbs in 7 months just calories, 36 lbs in less than 10 weeks of carb watching)… different diets work with different body styles, and that may be something to consider and discuss with your nutritionalist. glad you are having doctors help you figure it out. please let us know when you have updates…

    weight stalling

Congratulations on your weight loss so far. You may not be at your goal but what you have done is a great achievement. The truth is not everyone reaches their goal. This may be the weight your body is happiest at - your new set point. Or your rate of loss could have just slowed right down. Ensuring you get in all your protein, water & other nutrients is vital & not doing so maybe compromising your loss. You just have to establish those better habits around eating & drinking to meet your goals. If you eat your protein first you should meet your goal without too much difficulty. Protein first, then vegetables & then only carbs if you are able. Sometimes all I’d eat was the protein component. Still do sometimes. And make any snacks you eat protein rich too. Keep fluids by your side all the time. I drink during the night, in the car as I’m driving, etc. I have habits like get in the car drink. Get out of the car drink. Red light drink. You can do this if you use public transport too. Remember all fluids count not just water. This far along you probably don’t need to be waiting 30 minutes between eating & drinking. Reduce the time you wait to a time frame you feel comfortable with & doesn’t compromise being able to consume the food you need. In my second year I only needed to wait about 10/15 minutes. Now I wait about 5 but can only take one large mouthful at a time - 2 swallows - any more is uncomfortable.
