4 days to go and counting until my bypass……….
-
I have a date of June 17 for a Lap Band Revision to a Sleeve with Dr Alvarez at EndoBariatics. 3 weeks from today!
-
Does anyone else hate eating real food because you’re afraid to stretch out your new stomach? I’ve been watching my 600 Pound Life and the Dr. Says gastric sleeve is just as effective in the short term as gastric bypass. Is this because the sleeve is easier to stretch out?

I have had no support. Got banded Jan of 22. Since then I have only met with my dietitian once and that was upon request. I’m so confused as to what to eat. I just had revision surgery last week. I had a port leak. And now I’m trying to figure out what I’m supposed to be doing. That’s why I just got this app. Any advice?

JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES
Brandiwine77 replied to Mira88's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Def trust your surgeon. Mine did not want to do bypass due to absorption issues that are common. He said that since I didn't have a thyroid, he would rather do the sleeve to not risk my thyroid meds not absorbing. -
Oh ok - looks like there are a number of you who have gone for the sleeve. I’m having the bypass done. I’m not to nervous about it as I was before but I’m thinking that may change when I’m being wheeled to theatre! I do trust my surgeon which I think is important.

My Weight Loss Journey: From 150 kg to 64 kg, and Now Back to 94 kg - Seeking Support and Advice
Just G replied to Seif_s88's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am almost 15 years out of bypass. I started at 275 and I loss down to a 168. I have gained 70 pounds. It took years but it creeped back up. I was proud of my size when I was at my smallest but I felt like crap and I was sick. Between anemia (a result of the bypass) and poor MENTAL health, I found that I was better at a BMI that said I was overweight. I never liked my body as I was never "perfect". I think it was because I was not happy in my day to day life. That meant I couldn't be happy with me. I divorced and spiraled for a while. I fell into the bat eating habits and didn't want to exercise. I think the mental should have taken precedence over the physical and I probably could have maintained it. I am at a place where I like ME and I can focus on my weight without it being about finding OTHERS acceptance. I only want to lose 50. But, I am focusing on strength training. Some days I struggle but over all I feel great. I am starting the walking/1300 calorie counting. Strength training and therapy are also part of that. I know how to lose weight and I will again. But, more importantly, I know how to process my emotions and I pray I don't turn to food. -
Howdy all, just found this forum. Had my Bypass on 5/15, so a little over a week out. I see some complaints about being tired, I was pretty tired my first week, couldn't make it through the day without a 2hr nap. On day 8, I didn't take a nap and have been feeling pretty good since then. Before my surgery, my doctor said that very low energy was VERY common and effected people differently. He did say that after 3-4 weeks, pretty much all of his patients felt good and were back to normal/better energy levels. So I hope you guys start getting some energy back soon!

A little late to the game, but I just had my Bypass on 5/15/2023. I am flying to Italy for a 2 week trip on 6/28, so around 6.5 weeks total from surgery to trip. I discussed it with my doctor and he had no reservations about the timing, I think he would have been comfortable up to about 5 weeks out. According to my food plan, I will be on soft foods by then, and fish/salmon is one of the best "starter" meats, so I plan on having a lot of seafood while over there. I do plan on taking a healthy stash of 1-off protein powder mixes to dump into a bottle of water if I need to supplement. I would recommend requesting a hotel room with a mini-fridge and putting some yogurt/cottage cheese/protein drinks/etc in there so that you aren't constantly trying to figure out meals.

♥️ Congratulations you guys - June is almost upon us. I’m one full week of pre-op liquid today and 10lbs down. 7 days and counting for bypass on 1st June - it’s a challenge at times but I’m hanging in there for the 1st June xx

Hey guys thanks all for taking the time . So I was curious as to if anybody else has experienced low pulse after gastric bypass? prior to gastric bypass (sep 2022) I had no issues with my pulse however recently I have had low pulses reading at 40-55 now I don’t have any other symptoms yes maybe a bit more tired but that’s all. However my wife got the gastric done April of this year and she is having the same issues however with her she has actually passed out and felt nauseous and basically like she’s drunk without drinking .. curious if anyone else has experienced the same …

Mine is on 6/7, too! Gastric Bypass with HH surgery inpatient in Jacksonville, FL! Good luck 🙃

Officially 7 days post gastric bypass 🎉 I'm feeling very well aside from incision tenderness. What concerns me though is that I can drink a 16oz Gatorade in under an 1hr with no issues. Is that normal? or safe??

Gastric Sleeve to SADI-S
Fred in Pa replied to rlmontgomery1's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
The first thing you need to do is call your insurance company and determine your bariatric benefits and ask for them to be sent to you in writing. At the same time, ask for their policy paper on bariatric surgery. Most insurance companies have the requirements written in detail. Ask for them to be sent to you in writing as well. This policy paper should detail the requirements to be met for a revision. As far as the SADI-S, it is what my doctor recommended. Like you describe what “should” happen, my doctor listened to all of my issues, and explained all the procedures and recommended the SADI. Going in, I was thinking just a sleeve, but with my various metabolic issues the SADI made more sense. If you stay with your current doctor, demand that he review the pros and cons of each revision as it relates to your specific issues. You will also find a lot of information here in this forum from others who have gone through each procedure. Read, read, read! Good luck to you! Keep us posted on your progress. -
Gastric Sleeve to SADI-S
NovaLuna replied to rlmontgomery1's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Not sure what to say about how to get your insurance to cover a revision, but if you're having reflux problems then maybe have Bypass instead. I had the Sadi-S myself, and have lucked out that my EOE didn't cause the acid issues to get worse (I have acid issues at night due to EOE a.k.a Eosinophilic Esophagitis). If you do get the Sadi-S here's some advice... 1. don't go too long without something in your stomach even if it's applesauce or fruit, etc. because if I wait to long inbetween eating my bowels decide to empty everything in them. (TMI, but you should know so you can avoid it happening to you) 2. Always take a probiotic every day because it helps with keeping you regular 3. I don't know if it's a common thing for Sadi-S or other surgeries or if it's just me... but I haven't been able to throw up since my surgery... 3 years ago (and yes, I've been sick and dry heaved for hours, but couldn't throw up). 4. having any WLS with a malabsorption factor gives you a 3% chance of developing a wheat allergy or Celiac's (I got the wheat allergy because my luck is ****). And, 5. I don't know if it's just a DS or Sadi-S thing, but there is a chance after surgery that you will vomit old blood (if this counts as vomiting then this is the only time I've thrown up since surgery. It happened three or four times while I was in the hospital after surgery. They didn't warn me and it scared the **** out of me). Anyway, yeah... I'm happy with my surgery choice, but if I'd had another chance I think I'd have gone for the original DS since it has slightly better weight loss results. I had the normal gain back you get going into your third year and straddle between 188-193 which I've been for 9 months. Also, any time you have surgery, ANY surgery, you risk the chance of health problems popping up that you would have got a little later in life. I developed Mast Cell Activation Syndrome after my WLS and it's been a b***h to deal with. I mean, technically the doctor told me she thinks I probably already had the beginnings of it before the surgery and the surgery itself just... made it progress to a more severe case (apparently they noticed a trend in people with EOE developing MCAS so it was pretty much going to happen anyway). But still. Health issues can pop up after surgery. So just be aware of it. Hopefully everything goes well for you and sorry for the word vomit. -
Hi folx, My highest weight was 383 lbs in November 2020. I have Sleep Apnea, Hypertension (Managed Well on Meds), Acid Reflux, Mild Hiatal Hernia, and Anomalous Right Coronary Artery. When I had my sleeve surgery in November 2020, my BMI was 50.1. I was on a steady decline post op. I exercise, and somewhat maintain diet. I don’t overeat, but I am also not as religious as immediately following surgery. I have a new insurance provider because of a new job and would like to consider revision to a SADI-S since the gastric sleeve part is already done. And, it’s been shown to have the best long term outcomes. I have bariatric benefits, but I would like to know what I need to do to get my insurance to cover a revision. Also, after speaking to some medical professionals, I learned that with a BMI of 50.1, I probably should have had DS or Bypass to begin with. Why didn’t my doctor talk to me more about other options. I mean I had a great Doc. Best by far. But would have liked to had some more conversations. I know that DS won’t fix the reflux, but I think it could help address the other things. Thoughts?

May 2023 surgeries
Miss Sunshine P replied to WVJess2Less's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I heard that ricotta bake was so good but how soon after surgery can you have that because they haven’t said anything about that yet in my list of foods…I’m 3 weeks post op tomorrow gastric bypass surgery May 3rd -
Hi guys - I’m just shy of 6mos out from Gastric Bypass and have a question on portion sizes. Any idea what the portion sizes or ounces one should be eating at 6mos out? Grant it there are some days when I can have more than others but is there an estimate? Sometimes I feel like I’m eating too much. Meaning, the food goes down fine but 15mins later my stomach is super full. I’m thinking if I base it on ounces then I wouldn’t have this issue and maybe a better stopping point. Let me know your thoughts - thanks

Any April Surgery Dates?
BabySpoons replied to rokse23's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's funny. I thought I got the wrong surgery. A sleeve instead of a gastric bypass. Reason being, at my first follow up, I told the doc my incision on right side was still painful. He said it was normal because that's where they remove the stomach at. I'm like wait..... didn't you give me a bypass??? After I got home, I was a bit paranoid about it. Even the nurse mentioned sleeve so I went so far as to check with my insurance and doctor's notes to make sure I got the correct procedure. I guess the sleeve is performed more often nowadays so my Bariatric team assumed till they looked closer at my notes. Geez, what a faux pas. -

3 Days Post Op - Just Documenting My Journey
Changing Chris replied to doubleJointed's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I also have a similar story. 46 yrs old with heart issues (double bypass in 2018.) Before my surgery, just one month before yours, I was on two blood pressure meds. I stopped taking them the day before surgery and at my first week post op visit my blood pressure was already within normal range without the meds. I was in shock! Especially because my blood pressure was always high, even with the meds!! I have my one month post op visit coming up in 2 days, interested in seeing where I'm at. I also hit the ground running and was walking up to two miles a day after surgery and received the same warnings as you got above... haha! Once I slowed down to let my body heal, the weight started dropping off. 30 pounds down since surgery day. Good Luck! Lots of good advice on here, even though it felt like I was getting scolded sometimes! 🙂 -
3 Days Post Op - Just Documenting My Journey
doubleJointed replied to doubleJointed's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes, overdid it on the walking for sure. Lesson learned. Thanks for what to expect on the poop. This is new to me, since I'm used to the opposite (5-7 times a day). I guess I'll go buy some miralax, because I've read here about the constipation and obstructions. I was surprised at first to when the Dr recommended the VSG and not RNY. I like to read, read, read, and I thought the bypass was going to be the option. The Dr said the sleeve can make GERD worse, and make people who didn't have GERD get GERD, but he said it's 10-20%, not 50/50 or worse odds. I even had Barrett's Esophagus that resolved a couple of years ago after years of PPI meds. I still consulted with my gastroenterologist prior to surgery. In fact I had an EGD in March because i was having stricture. He said even as I was dropping the rest of my meds (during weight loss) I would likely have to remain on the 40mg omeprazole for the rest of my life. I was already planning on that, so I made the decision to try the sleeve with my eyes wide open that I might need a revision. The first night I had a little reflux when I got in bed, but haven't had any issues since. I am still taking my PPI. Thanks for the response! -
3 Days Post Op - Just Documenting My Journey
catwoman7 replied to doubleJointed's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
8000 steps is pretty high for being just a few days out of surgery. Your body needs to rest and heal. It's been several years since I had surgery, but I think I mostly walked around my house a little the first three or four days, then did a jaunt around the block every day for a few days after that. It's good to be up and moving, but don't push yourself too much - again, your body needs to heal. as far as poop, it often takes a good week for the first one (there's not much in there yet), and the first one tends to be a doozy. A lot of us start taking stool softeners a couple of days ahead of it to prepare for it. After that, a minority of people experience occasional diarrhea, but most experience constipation, often chronic (it's due to the high protein diet plus the iron and calcium (if you're taking those). I still take a capful of Miralax every morning to keep on top of it. watch out for reflux - I'm a little surprised your surgeon recommended VSG since that's been known to make GERD worse, but that's not the case for everyone. But just keep tabs on it and manage it if it doesn't resolve or gets worse (a minority get it so badly they end up getting a revision to RNY, but for most, it can be managed with PPIs). You just don't want that to get out of control - but again, you may not have issues with it. Some people have said theirs even got better after surgery, so you never know.. I haven't seen many posts about hiccups, so I don't know how common that is, but it doesn't surprise my since your stomach's been sliced and diced. And the painful transitions (when you go from lying down to standing up, or whatever) - yep, that's very common. That's really the only time I had pain. It felt like I'd just done about 1000 crunches. that went away after a week or so, I think. sounds like things are going well over all, though. Welcome to the losers' bench!
