Laura please be super careful. I had a fill on November 11th and kept thinking things would get better. Well they didn't, I now know that being to tight caused my aspiration pneumonia. I have had the band since May of 2004 and never had any acid reflux or heartburn. Since my fill in Nov I had it constantly. I was taking all kinds of antacids. Eating things on the mushy side lots of soups and ice cream all the stuff we really shouldn't. If our band is right we should be able to eat pretty normal, but much less. Just be really careful, I know I wanted my fill to smooth out. I had been stuck on my weight loss and was really hoping that a new fill would just kick it in again. But in reality I just needed to be a better bandster. Trust me it is not worth getting sick, I am just now since my unfil last week starting to feel better. I think you will know, I think I did I was just hoping that it would get better. Be careful!!!!!!

IF---------and that is a big IF-----you are on a regular diet now, not on mushies or liquids, then nothing will happen if you eat it. This is not bypass surgery with dumping issues. Small bites, chewed well----and you should be fine. Most suggest the lower calorie as it speeds up weight loss!! Avoiding refined sugars and flours is recommended, but if you are asking will it physically hurt you, or your band, or make you "dump" the answer is no! One of the benefits and yet drawback at the same time to the band! You can eat it, but you will get the same calories and fat out of it you would have pre band. The difference is, with the band, once you get some restriction, 1 cookie will be enough, not the entire plate she brought!!! Welcome to LBT! Kat

Wow - what a fantastic food intake — is now the focus of a fierce competition pitting consumer-products giant Johnson & Johnson against Botox maker Allergan Inc. Venture-capital-backed outpatient centers are popping up to implant the bands. Growing ranks of surgeons are touting the procedure at free public seminars. All see a vast market in a country where diet and exercise programs have failed to slow an obesity epidemic. Lap-Band v. Gastric Bypass Image A number of recent studies suggest that gastric banding is safer than gastric bypass, and some data suggest comparable, if slower, weight-loss results. Improvements in surgical techniques and follow-up care have helped gastric banding become the dominant weight-loss operation in Europe and Australia. Credit Suisse analyst Marc Goodman predicts that gastric banding will account for half of all weight-loss surgeries by 2010, up from about 30% today. GASTRIC BANDWAGON What’s New: Once dismissed as a gimmick, gastric banding is now seen by some in the medical industry as the next big thing in elective surgery. The Players: Industry giants Johnson & Johnson and Allergan, as well as venture-capital firms that are backing outpatient centers. Patient Concerns: The silicone device can shift after surgery, causing it to lose effectiveness. And patients may eventually need another surgery to replace or remove it.

Banded April 16 and in pain still with a leak
erica777 replied to BookWormJoy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded april 16th and one of my incisions is still bleeding. staining my t shirts w/o realizing it. I finally had to clean it again and put a band aid on it. I have one more week before my dr appt so I am hoping it will heal better before then. I can't seem to find the port though. a friend I know who had the bypass done said your tummy will stay swollen for about two or three weeks or so and then all of a sudden you will notice the swelling gone. the leakage could be coming from excessive swelling. my biggest question is... my stomach feels like a hard ball. I don't know why?? I didn't notice it in the hospital because I was too busy trying not to throw up. the 4th day got better. -
Hi, I am new to this and I'm looking for feedback. I am on the fence about which surgery I want to have lapband or bypass? help!!

I've had 2 weeks of pureed food, and tomorrow get to start 'soft foods'. I can't wait to eat some scrambled eggs! Soft cheese! Crackers and tuna salad! Pureed chicken noodle Soup is getting old, but it tasted SO GOOD after clear liquids! I too have had food dreams! I dreamt I loaded up a plate at some buffet with ham and turkey and all kinds of stuff...started stuffing my face...when I realized I can't even eat this stuff..what am I doing?! I woke up so thankful it was a dream! However, the fact that I'm having food dreams is scary, because this is the first time I've had them since starting pre-op diet in November. I think they are my psyche adjusting to the fact that there ARE foods that I probably have given up for life...popcorn, corn on the cob (several of them!) And no more pigging out on General T'so's Chicken/ Chinese buffet. And I'm OK with that intellecutally ....BUT...in the past when I'd have these dreams, it was the start of my slipping into past bad habits. That HEAD HUNGER! I'm so happy I have my band to use to avoid giving up the control over my diet now. Normally, at this phase, I'd start loosing that determination, willpower...because this takes SO long... I guess I should just enjoy food dreams...eat all I want in them! Then I won't have to actually do it! Anybody else having this issue? How are you handling it?

In my gastric bypass eating program plan after surgery, it wasn't until 8 weeks post-op before I was allowed solids, like chicken and steak. Transitioning to solids is a very difficult transition. I found that softer foods such as chili and soups went down much easier than solid foods such as steak and chicken. I included some recipes at the bottom of the following article. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf Generally during surgery in the hospital you are automatically given antibiotics because there are a lot of dangerous germs in a hospital and surgery opens up a pathway for infection. Antibiotics kill not only the bad germs but also the good gut bacteria. It is important to reestablish your colonies of good bacteria after you come off the antibiotics. This is done by taking probiotics for awhile. This will help you gut process foods better and will minimize your frequent trips to the restroom.

New Here, Only 4 Days Until My Surgery
Rusty replied to Tami Christian's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Tami, I am 7 weeks post op and there's not a day where I don't give thanks for having made the decision to have the bypass surgery. I can identify with all you have written and can tell you that life is about to turn around for you. Be happy, be positive and be prepared for life as you always hoped it would be. A useful book is Life After Gastric Bypass. Buy it, read it and keep it at hand as it will help so much. I look forward to reading of your journey and new life. -
You can eat whatever you feel like eating actually. The point of the clear diet is to jumpstart your weightloss. Your stomach will have swelling from the trauma to the tissue from surgery. The swelling will be the tightness you feel when you consume food or liquids. Heavier things could cause you to need to throw up, it isn't a regular nausea it is more like choking and needing to get it out, and I am sure you have been told that that is bad for your band. If you are very hungry try some Jello, fudgesicles, or a cup of warm tea. These will help aleviate the hunger, as will the Protein drinks. You can get some from quixstar online with 35 grams of protein and just 5 carbs. The vanilla is terrific. I am in hormone hell and having hunger issues way more than I can control, I was done on May 7, 2008. You want to lose 2 a week at most or you get too flabby too quick. See some on here dropping way too fast and know that my sister looks awful after doing that with bypass surgery. I fought getting this done for a long time, but know it is my tool I need. Plugging away at increasing exercise and hope in the next 2 weeks to control the hormone hunger then get my 2nd fill. My best help has been reading on here where I can get some shared info and incentive. Good Luck and work into soft slowly so you don't get disappointed in your weight change.

I drink a lot of hot tea, and usually have a cup, or sometimes even 2 or 3 cups early in the morning. Normal for me is eating my first "meal" sometime between 10:30 and 2:00. Anything earlier hurts, because I'm very tight early. Fortunately, though I am not hungry early on, and the tea does the trick. Lots of people use the Protein shakes, but I can't consume anything cold. My fill doc has a band, and she told me that for her it is usual to wait until maybe 1:00 in the afternoon before she is able to eat. So, morning tightness is perfectly normal for some, and for others "normal" seems to be a little different. You'll do great!!! I've just hit the 40 pound mark! Losing slowly but consistently, and I'm very thankful! (I was banded on November 12, 2007 - 40 pounds lost in 26 weeks) Kristine The Woodlands, TX

TX - there's a doc here who would take me on as a new patient, but his fills are $700 and I'm not covered! It's ridiculous how much some docs are charging. It's like they know you're in a desperate situation so they'll take you for all you're worth. The rosy side of the picture is YOU'VE LOST OVER 100 POUNDS!!!! You're way ahead of the game, you're doing great. Your next fill will be here before you know it. Take this time to find something fun to do, like find a new hiking trail or join a biking group. Get active and get out there. You're a November Nymphs hero, don't ya know it?

Is stricture common with the lapband, or does that mainly happen with gastric bypass surgery?

Dr. wouldn't give me my first fill....
PATCHELTON replied to kdlee's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Most doctors (at least here in Maryland) won't do a fill until at least 6 weeks post-op. You may feel all healed up, but might not be. Don't rush it. I got my first fill at 6 weeks, 3ccs, and by evening even water gave me indigestion. The next day I called and met the doctor at the hospital and he unfilled about 1.5 ccs. Two weeks later in his office I reported that soft foods were okay, but I was having trouble with denser stuff. So he took out another cc. On my last visit, I said I am able to eat way more than 1/2 cup of food and I get hungry before 4 hours, but he talked me out of the fill since I was still losing and he said I was ahead of schedule for the band, bypass, and sleeve. So I have at the most 1cc in my band (a 14cc fill volume), and I am working on my head hunger. I do eat more than 1/2 cup, but I love salads (I put chicken, ham or turkey on it for a protein source) and am still slowly losing. I plateaued for a month or so, and now it is creeping down. I was on liquids before surgery (lost 25 pounds) and I lost 10 during the 6 month diet. The rest has come off since surgery on 3/25/08. -

question about losing restriction after 5th fill
loveangelpet posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi, I had my 5th fill on Tuesday. Before which i was feeling slight restriction but knew i was in need of an adjustment. Since that fill, of only .2 I feel a little less restriction then i did before. Has anyone ever felt this? I'm not complaining i've had success losing 81lbs since surgery in november 07. However, i dont want something to be wrong and not know. Is it possible to have a little tighter restriction before a fill then it be less after? I am calling my dr today but i just wanted some insight from anyone who would maybe know or have felt this. Thanks:rolleyes: btw i now have 6.7 in a 10cc band. -
Hi, Has anyone heard of doctors doing a lapband on anyone who has had a gastric bypass? I came across an ad for it in Mexico. I was thinking it would be kinda hard because of not much stomach left. I have a band-3 weeks into it. But i have an aunt and cousin who have had a bypass and I'm curious! Any info out there?? Thanks, Laurie

im having the gastric bypass starting weight 422 so i have yet to find any women at our weight range hopefully someone can offer some insight good luck and congratulations!! -
Hope I'm doing this right, I've had the RNY gasteric bypass exactly 2 months ago and I have been doing nothing but vomiting. At first, up to the first 2.5 weeks after surgery, everything seemed to be going well but I started vomiting after that and haven't stopped. I will only try the smallest bite of something(soft food) and I start vomiting. It hurts and sometimes it seems like I'm actually vomiting foam. Has anyone had this or can anyone tell me maybe where to look for an answer please. My Dr. gave me fenergen but I still vomit. Is this normal?

Gastric bypass usually takes less time to lose the excess weight, but it comes with different risks and consequences than banding. Bypassing connects your esophagus to your large intestine, bypassing your stomach. You won't be able to digest food in a normal manner anymore and many bypass patients end up with nutrient absorption problems. Also, gastric bypass is not generally reversible, in most cases. If patients are so morbidly obese that the risks are worth the benefits, then a bypass is right for them. Banding is a tool that helps you eat smaller meals, but only if you follow the rules. You will still digest food normally, but the benefits of banding can be defeated by poor eating habits and bad food choices. It takes discipline and it's not a magic weight loss bean. Bypass was just too drastic a step for me, but you need to decide what is right for you. Bryan Banded August 26, 2008

Well there are many types of bypass, Roux-en-Y is the one most people think of as bypass, but it's all surgery. Anyway it was just a thought; I'm sure you and your doctor will come up with a plan for you!

Restlessmonkey and glorybee are right. According to my doctors, if you get stuck and PB then you have to go on liquids for the next 24hrs because you need to let your stomache heal...so trying to eat more food just irriated you even more. I just got my third fill this week and I'm having trouble eating most food...this morning, for example, I had ONE bit of a Breakfast sausage and ONE bite of a western omlet and I felt like I was slightly stuck, like it was having trouble passing through...it took about a 1/2 and I finally can eat a little more of my eggs...with this fill, I really have to eat TINY pieces, something I'm still learning and working on and I've been banded since November 20th. Go on liquids for the next 24 hours and then eat some soft foods after that and see what happens...if your still having a problem, call you doctor! Hope this helped!
