    October 2022 surgery support

It is. I had mine on 10.11 too. I'm still on liquids the booklet I received says stage 2 is for 2 weeks and then this other paperwork I got at the hospital says 10 days. I can only have protein shakes, soups, water, jello, and Popsicles. I did blend up some soup and then put it through a strainer and pretty much nothing went through =(. I can't wait for applesauce, or yogurt even! Scared but excited.
  2. Hi! I’m almost 10 weeks post rny surgery. I keep having a long lasting bad taste in my mouth. (Yes I’m taking my reflux meds!) I was trying to pay attention to when it’s worse and I think it’s after I take my calcium chew! I switched to a different brand and it’s the same taste. I’m wondering if calcium citrate chews cause a bad taste for anyone else? Maybe it’s something else and I’m way off but I feel like it’s the chews! Thanks for your time!
  3. The only real way to know this would be to have your Basal or Resting Metabolic Rate analyzed. While BMR and RMR are technically slightly different, they are often used interchangeably. The tests to determine this are readily available in clinics and even some gyms. You should be able to find some options by googling something like "metabolic testing near me". Note that there are a few different types of tests used (feel free to research them), and some are a bit more accurate than others, but they are generally pretty close. Alternately, there are online calculators that you can use, and even some digital scales (those that use BIA), that can also provide either your BMR or RMR. Unfortunately, neither the scales or calculators are all that accurate. It's not uncommon for those to be off by 10 or even 20%. Obviously more than enough to have you potentially eating too much.
  4. Really having a hard time not falling back into my old way of thinking and eating (or not eating, as it were). My husband pointed out today that I'm restricting again. He said he noticed it Friday and all through the weekend. I've been in a lot of pain because I pulled 2 muscles in my back, have had a lot of stress the last week, and instead of going to over eating like I used to, I fell back into my new "old" habit of restricting. I was worrying I would overeat, and I guess I went right back into my new "fall back" habit of just not eating much of anything. My husband made notes on what he saw me eating and I had 450 calories and 18 carbs on Friday, 413 calories and 14 carbs on Saturday and 344 calories and 10 carbs on Sunday. I honestly didn't even notice it, and that really freaks me out. I can fall back into it that easily and it doesn't even faze me. I drink so much water now (flavored only, because plain water is EW) that I honestly didn't even feel hungry. I hate that I swapped one disordered way of thinking for another. PLEASE pay close attention to your feelings, thoughts, and habits. DO NOT tell yourself that because you're fat/obese/overweight or whatever that you can't develop an ED. Trust me, you can. And it can sneak up on you and smack you in the head when you don't expect it to. I thought I was doing so well. Been logging my food, not cheating, not restricting, doing my therapy, and then BAM. Here we go again. Be kind to yourself, but be mindful and aware.
  5. I cannot actually remember my protocol, but I searched my old files for the prescription and it did say #28 for Menopur. This was over 10 years ago, so maybe the science has advanced since then for PCOS patients.
  6. Hello everyone, This is my first post. I am having gastric bypass surgery tomorrow 10/19/22 and I am so nervous and excited. I can't believe that the day is almost here. I have been researching WLS for about 5 years and finally started the process about 6 months ago. I am mostly nervous about the mental challenges I will face after the surgery. Any tips for a newbie?
  7. Hi all, I am one week post op (Sleeved on 10/11/22). I am feeling like I cant get in the rythm of what is right for me. Pros: - Been getting all fluids down - Have not had much pain, only where they pulled stomach out -Been able to walk and move around - Only had gas pain for 3 days -Normal bowl movement Cons: - I don't like the taste of sweetness. So I am having a hard time getting my protein in from shakes and protein water. Any recommendations for other sources of protein? -I've been able to have some strained soup/ broth. But I am only able to take like 4 table spoons over an hour. How is it expected to get all protein in while trying to get water in as well through out the day? - The bariatric advantage multi vitamins are terrible. I am not able to take them so I started taking 4 Flinstone vitamins a day. I know these are not good enough for a person who just had bariatric surgery. I am taking my gallstones pills, calcium, iron, and b-12 with no problem. Are there any other recommendations for Bariatric Multivitamins? Smaller or better tasting? Any input is appreciated. I feel that protein and supplements are very important with the new change to my body. Thanks guys!!!

6 weeks post op ZERO WEIGHT LOSS AND DEPRESSED

Aliana I think you are confused and need to reread the ENTIRE thread. I have not lost 21 pounds in a month. I wish!! Surgery Aug 12 wishing that week I was at my family dr who weighed me in at 367. this morning……almost eight weeks later… I WEIGH 364. Sooooo my math says 3 pounds since Aug 19 dr appointment. so I have lost 3 pounds in 2.5 months. It’s very frustrating to me when people say oh well you’ve lost 21 pounds in a month when that’s clearly not the case and like I had mentioned before it was water weight my body likes to hold onto every drop of water. I mean we’re even at the point now we’re doctors and dieticians are saying somethings wrong so it’s not just me being crazy

    Question for the ladies

I started my period 2 weeks early while on pre-op diet. Started the day of my surgery. That was NOT fun. Nurses told me that it is a common thing among women during rapid weight loss pre-surgery. Now about 5 weeks later, I'm a week late. I have felt PMS'y for the entire week (actually about 10 days) without the relief of a period starting. It's maddening, but I am reassured by my bariatric staff that this is all usual.

    October 2022 surgery support

It's crazy to me how different doctors have different schedules for the post op diet. I also had the sleeve on 10/11 and have another week of liquids to go before I can do pureed/soft. Though, it makes me happy to hear you can handle the foods. Gives me hope that when I get started maybe I won't face many issues. Congrats!

    October 2022 surgery support

Hi all!! Just had my SG done on 10/11. I was able to lose 12lbs prior to my surgery and have since dropped 10 more. Currently eating pureed cauliflower, peas, carrots and celery mixed together and using low sodium chicken gravy to help "soup" it up some 3x a day (About ¼ cup ea. time). In-between I drink 8oz of protein whey isolate or Chicken / vegetable stock (mixed) hourly. My "before 730pm" treat is sugar-free jello. So far so good. Hi guys I have couple of questions I'm I At 7.5 cc in 10cc band I had my fill a week ago in still doing liquids because I tried thicker and slimed and it was not cool like yesterday I was able to have protein shake a creamy soup I even had a Jamba juice smoothie with extra protein today well diff story I woke up and drank my hot tea which helps loosen the band in my opinion since I'm tighter in the morning and it was all hell I couldn't keep anything down without it gurgling and bothering me I find chewing ice helps the inflammation in stomach from pb or sliming or it coming up whatever u wanna call it have any of u gone threw this my Dr said if. Not having heart burn or cough and able to have those soups yesterday then it's not to night ur just swollen. And the band will fit looser when u loose weight especially cuz we have fat the part the band stays . I lost another 10 lbs after I've platue for longest. I've lost total of 50 lbs since my surgery in January I want to hear all ur experiences as u have tighter adjustments please Sent from my DE2118 using BariatricPal mobile app

6 weeks post op ZERO WEIGHT LOSS AND DEPRESSED

I lost 0 lbs in 5 weeks. Yes it can happen and it is normal. I lose alot slower than others on here because I have a knee issue and cannot walk any real distance (I need a knee replacement and keep putting it off). I believe I lost 22 lbs pre op then 14 lbs in like 9 days post op then after that I was on a 5 week stall no weight loss whatsoever. It can certainly play mind games with you. I am 5 months post op and I lose only about 7-10 lbs per month. But not all months, for example in Sept I think I only lost 5 or 6 lbs and so far October isnt looking that great either lol. I just take what I can get at this point. As long as I am not gaining, I see it as a small victory

    Short term disability?

Well, this is something squarely in my wheelhouse! Maybe I can help. You should first check your short-term disability policy (ask HR for a copy), because some of them have a 5- or 7-day elimination period, which is the number of days you have to be out before the benefit starts. So if the first week is not payable, it makes no sense to file a claim for just one week. The amount of time off you need depends on the type of work you do. If you have a physical job (lots of standing, walking, lifting/carrying greater than 10 pounds), then your doctor will probably recommend you take more time off and the claim will be approved. If your job is mostly sitting at a desk, your doctor will have to give specific reasons for your inability to work. Depending on your procedure, most doctors already have a set number of weeks they will sign off on for recovery. Either way, you aren't tied to the initial number of weeks you requested: you can always return to work sooner if you feel well enough, or you can apply for more time off if there were complications.

    Starting my ESG journey!

Hi, I am so glad to see more people here who have had or are looking into ESG! I highly recommend it. I was looking into it for a while. What convinced me to go this route was the recent MERIT study published in The Lancet. Here's a decent summary of the findings: https://www.bariatricnews.net/post/merit-rct-endoscopic-sleeve-gastroplasty-is-safe-and-results-in-significant-weight-loss. I had my ESG on October 7th and have lost 15 pounds as of today (10 days later). Like Forensikchic, I had very little pain. My procedure was at 10:30 am, was discharged and on my way home by 1:30 pm, and basically slept the rest of the day. The next day I had some gas and nausea, for which I had zofran (which made me throw up, so no more of that tyvm!). I slept in a recliner in an abundance of caution until the 3rd night, but I could have skipped that. The procedure was Friday and I was back in the office on Monday, Day 3. Looking back, I had super low energy until I started protein shakes on Day 3. I was easily tired the entire first week, only short walks and light dumbbells / kettlebell lifts. But I was drastically better when I started the soft/puree stage (real food, bless!) on Day 7. By yesterday, Day 9, I was able to walk briskly for over an hour. This morning, I did a 5K run/walk/run, which was great. I was also able to deadlift 5x3 sets at 95 lbs (a big de-load for me) without problems because there's no cutting with this procedure. Other than having to limit my caffeine intake (UGH!!), I consider myself back at 100% as of today, Day 10. Yay! My doctor gave me a Post-Procedure Guidebook provided by the device manufacturer, but I could not find it on their website (apolloendo.com) to share. So here is a picture of the page with the summary of stages of food. See how easy? In summary, yes -- I am super happy I chose ESG. My life is such that I could not have taken the time off necessary for surgery. It was either this or nothing. I am so glad I went forward with it.

    Weight regain advise please

Feeling really discouraged today as I have my egg retrieval tomorrow and they said there only seems to be 2 follicles that are the right growth. 2 more (finally) started responding to the FSH & LH meds on day 13 but it was too late. As it was, they had predicted I would only get 4 eggs. I have another cycle planned at the end of November giving me about 6 weeks to lose weight. I was told that even a 5-10% loss of my weight (10-20 lbs) would improve my chances. It seems daunting to lose that much weight in 6 weeks though given that I have just managed to maintain for so many years rather than to lose. I did the math and if I have been eating about 2000 calories and maintaining then I should be able to lose about 15 lbs by eating 800 calories/day for 45 days. If I continue to walk as I have been for the past month, I may be able to lose even more before starting the next round of injections. Someone tell me if this sounds crazy, please!
  20. I had surgery on 10/11/22 (Tuesday). I work from home doing chart reviews and came back today. I have a flexible team environment so it is less daunting to get up and get fluids etc. It isn't exactly comfortable being at the desk, but manageable. If I had to go to an office out of home then I would say prep is key: water bottle with enough for the day, protein drinks (if at that stage), and any meds that might be needed for the day. If I had the time off, I would probably take a couple of days more just for my own mental healing. With that said, I can manage it with little physical discomfort.

Anyone else do a VSG to ESG?

I want to get back to my original goal weight which is 135. Im 5'4" tall. I stayed between 130 and 135 for almost 7 years. I slowly gained over the past 5 years til I reached 182. On surgery day, I weighed 177. My starting weight from the very beginning was 235 so we are close in stats! I have about 30 pounds to go. I just started on regular food because my doctor put me on clears for 10 days instead of 2 days and 2 weeks for each stage after that. I have a little trouble getting all the water in but its helping me not to retain so much water. My body loves to store the water that I drink, if I dont get enough for it to decide I am not in a desert. lol. Good luck with whatever dicision you make. I am rooting for you to get to goal even if you dont have a revision. I am keeping my carbs low and protein high. They say I dont have a set goal for carbs but I try to keep it under about 40.

  23. Hello all, Lurked here for a while over the years. Figured I’d pop in and tell my story. Former professional American football player (Arena league, not NFL), played one year got injured, used my degree and got a desk job. My playing weight was 330 lb, so I was a big guy most of my life… then I got the desk job… kept eating like a professional football player but sitting on my butt all day. That went on for 10 years. Had to do a physical for work and life insurance. Weighed 390… the nurse asked me if I wanted to lay down after taking my BP 210/150. Oh and I had my first child a few months earlier… In that ten years, I had tried every diet in the book. Same old story. Would lose a decent amount of weight if only to add it back, plus some. The BP meds I was put on killed my libido. I was in a dead end job. Something had to give… I had casually looked into WLS a few times throughout the years, but dismissed it. I thought I was weak minded and just needed more will power. There may be some truth to that, I don’t know. I know in the moment I felt like I could die any moment and it wouldn’t surprise me. I decided to do the surgery. I was lucky to have insurance that covered the surgery and I could move through the process quickly. This is probably not the best approach for everyone, but it worked for me. I feel like I would’ve sabotaged myself if given longer. Anyways, had VSG surgery in May 2019. I have a high pain tolerance and recovered quickly. I followed the Dr’s orders to a T. Lost weight quickly. Within 6 months, I went from 390 to 230. I am now about 225. My weight stays in a range of 225-235. I have come to love the gym, got into CrossFit and love that scene. I stayed in the same career but pivoted to a different path and have almost tripled my salary. Had another kid, and I’m not on any meds. This surgery really was a life saver for me. Everything has gone spectacularly smoothly and I’ve gotten a new outlook on life and a much healthier relationship with food!

    November Surgery!!!!

My surgery got rescheduled from 10/25 to 11/23. I'll be having RNY.
  25. Thanks so much for the transparency and openness of everyone sharing their struggles! I have been researching (nurse brain here, lol) bariatric procedures for over 4yrs before finally being brave enough to seek out help. I’m almost 40 and have struggled with my weight my entire life. Have lost and gained back over 60lbs three times, but never in a truly healthy way. When all my scrubs were skin tight, and I was over the weekend gut limit for a bicycle, I realized I had enough - time wanted my entire life to change! I used to love bicycling, hiking, and strength training, but have gotten so out of breath all the time which made me depressed, and then I had to have a hysterectomy and everything really changed after that! so fast forward to now, I’ve lost about 10-15lbs since March/April and am scheduled for my sleeve provider in just three days!! good luck to everyone
