    Bad taste in mouth/disgusted with good?

    I had the worst time with food aversion. It took me about four months to get over it. I couldn't eat chicken, eggs, pork… I was thankfully okay with greek yogurt so that was my main source of protein. It does go away, it just takes time. You could also have what they call "keto breath". I had that and it was NASTY.

    Metfomin

    I was put on metformin, when I was diagnosed with diabetes, several years ago. It worked well. It improved my blood sugars. In addition to taking metformin, I started the keto diet. I lost 62 pounds in about 3 months. Of note, I started having hair loss. I don't know if it was the metformin, the diet, or the weight loss, but that's when I started losing my hair. I stayed on the metformin until the day of my surgery. The hair loss continued, even though I had stopped the keto diet and regained a bunch of weight.
  3. COTTAGE CHEESE !!!! Yes --- that's right - cottage cheese . I follow these 2 ladies on Utube , the Keto Twins, and they have a video on how to make them and different flavorings you can add.     Bad taste in mouth/disgusted with good?

    It’s not uncommon for our tastebuds &/or sense of smell to temporarily change making foods we used to like taste disgusting. It can also make foods we used to dislike yummy. Also ketosis (fat burning) can cause a foul taste in our mouths. Also causes bad breath, and other bodily secretions to smell unpleasant, and flu like symptoms (keto flu). It will pass. No timeline as to when though just when your body is ready. Congrats on your weight loss so far.

    By the way, I just googled working out on the keto diet (essentially what we are doing) and found this: https://www.everydayhealth.com/fitness/what-keto-diet-will-your-workout/ Talks about how high intensity stuff is very much affected, as burning fat for energy isn't as quick as burning carbs.

    Sweeteners after gastric sleeve

    I use monk fruit sweetener. Tastes sweeter than sugar but is recommended for those who are diabetic, on keto and low carb diets, and have had bariatric surgery. I love it, and I use it very sparingly, so it lasts a loooong time.

    Daily headaches

    Yep, could be withdrawal symptoms from carbs. Could be because of ketosis too. Lots of strange side effects when that starts occurring including unpleasant body odours, keto flu, etc. If the headaches persist or you can’t manage them with over the counter meds, speak with your medical team
  9. I saw my doctor today and got weighed just to see if the scale is different there than at home. I am 380, which of course I am happy about - but like I said, much of that was from the Optifast prior to surgery. I am not going to focus on the scale, but like I said before I was expecting a bit more of a woosh of weight loss since having the surgery. As I said before, I lost 20 ponds in two weeks just doing keto and moving a bit more - again I know that is water weight and also that wouldn't continue, but it was a great feeling nonetheless at the time. I agree with your points about nonscale victories and a month from now, I may be singing an entirely different tune on here. I was just thinking outloud and giving my initial thoughts per this thread. Thanks for the support. HM
  10. That's got to be one of the best answers I've heard yet. I have been on a bazillion diets in my lifetime and never stuck them out for that long. Except for intermittent fasting for 2 yrs. and added strict Keto the second and only lost 40 pounds. That was when I decided to get the surgery but it did keep me from becoming a full on diabetic. And this ^^^^^ I can stick with it if it I'm seeing results. It only stands to reason we will quit if we don't.
  11. Thanks for responding. I was 425 at my biggest. I am now just under 390, but most of that weight loss was from the 4 weeks of Optifast. Not the 3 weeks now after the surgery. When it is all said and done, I am looking to be 210/220 max which is the weight I was prior to gaining the weight. I haven't been overweight all my life, but I have been for a good 10+ years now. I am an emotional eater. Eat my stress away as opposed to say drinking or smoking when it comes to other dealing with life vices. I remember one time I lost about 20 pounds in two weeks when I did the Keto diet and joined a gym. Yes, I know that much of that is water weight and that rapid weight loss wouldn't continue as well as the fact that I didn't stick with it, but these are just questions that are popping into my curious head now - will I pretty much lose the same amount of weight monthly if I just stuck to a more traditional way of losing weight. I know it is a journey and tool for long term. I guess I am thinking how am I not losing more weight from just a calories point of view of just soups and other liquids in small amounts as I am not in the solid foods yet phase. I am also just thinking outloud here and just wanted to see what other people had to say when it came to weight loss just after surgery. Thanks HM
  12. Ive fought my weight all my life- sometimes healthy, but most of the time overweight, so dieting wasn’t new it me, BUT after covid and hitting peri/menopause, the weight came to stay. I was miserable- joint pain, pre-diabetic- and couldn’t lose weight no matter what - even on my usual low carb/keto path. Tried metformin—ugh, Tried contrave- Wellbutrin/naltroxene combo— sicker than a dog and scared of messing with my mental health. HRT was causing the weight to climb- and in november had hysterectomy - and by February hit my highest weigh of 195, Called and got a local Bariatric surgeon consult. Went in and discussed it- decided on VSG. I was NOT going to hit 200 - none of my clothes fit and everything hurt. Found out the process could be months log- so I got on internet and had Mexico- flights, surgeon and two days off work booked and planned for the next month. It cost me about as much as out of pocket would have cost me in the states and i was able to lose weight before surgery- where if id stayed in states, i could have been denied if i lost anything (MX requirement was BMI of 30, states was 35 and comorbitities, i think) I was READY-and was NOT in the mood to wait. So decided Feb 3, and surgery March 3. So glad i did it!

    Well, you're right. There are people living this way. Their opinion is just not as popular so some of us prefer to rather not comment. If it's possible not to worry about weight in the future? I can only speak for myself and I notice the lingering fear in regards to weight gain in the back of my brain so for me it doesn't seem to be possible but that doesn't mean that there are people who have a more relaxed relationship with this. It's definitely not mandatory. That's BS. I'm saying it again: it's not mandatory. Low carb, high protein is just the trend nowadays. Or keto. Some years ago it was low fat. Times simply have changed and they will most likely change again, bringing on the next dietary trend.
  14. My program allowed carbs after 3 months! Whole grain carbs, healthy carbs, etc. I've learned to love Keto bread products as they're usually low cal, low carb & can be a solid substitute! You 100% don't need to be keto to get them, they're just a really good compromise if you want to go that route. I even make pizza with keto crust (I use Joseph's Brand Pita Bread & Lavash Bread for it) It's good to have around But I've also found that I crave breads less in general. I don't -need- a carb to be apart of every meal anymore bc all that protein keeps me full & satisfied. Maybe that can happen for you too

    Pre-Op Diet Hell

    it's probably the carb withdrawal (and if you were a coffee drinker, caffeine withdrawal, too). The "Keto flu" is pretty common the first three or so days. Once your body goes into ketosis (around day 3 or 4), it does get a lot better. In addition to no- or very low calorie fluids (well, plus 4-5 protein shakes), I was allowed V8/tomato juice and clear broth (I think a cup of each) every day, so I always had those since the sodium in them made me retain water, which made me feel a little fuller, and I also ate sugar free popsicles and sugar free Jello with abandon since they were the only things I could have that somewhat resembled real food. There were some days I'd make the Jello that came in the larger-size boxes and eat the whole damn thing!!! Anyway, you'll get through it - and it should ease up a bit in another day or two. P.S. as others have said, the pre-op diet is the worst part of this whole thing. I was actually relieved the morning I was rolled into surgery because the godawful diet was OVER!! I found the progressive eating plan we go through after surgery (liquids, then purees, etc) way easier than that pre-op thing!!

I would say that these are very valid concerns, and one of the things that i struggled with in the past with weight loss, and it caused a lot of self sabotage— im working on it now with my therapist, and its a struggle. I don’t want to be noticed- and im my case, noticed for my body- and there are underlying factors that im working to uncover. My body is not something anyone should be commenting on- good or bad, imo. I would rather be noticed for something that is not fading, like a nice personality or a kind heart. Perhaps finding a counselor that has experience in body/weight loss issues would be beneficial. And you are safe here too- Im like you- I was self pay and having to come home to find resources like a counselor, dietician etc on my own. Build your team to support you, you deserve it. The hair loss was expected, as I had that when doing keto— it does turn around though, so keep up the faith there.

    Pre-op diet

    Apparently the patients my surgeon put in the liquid diet called that frst 5 or so days hell week. I’ve done the shake diet a couple of times in the past (for about 6 weeks each time - awful & hardly lost any weight). I cannot tell you how relieved I was my surgeon said no shakes for me but a dietician supported diet which was keto. Survive the first week & it does get easier. The worst aspect is the withdrawals from sugar, carbs, caffeine.
  18. Try your best to stick with fresh food- and ask for no sugar in sauces at restaurants. There is a HUGE diet culture here, dont be fooled by labels that say low carb or keto- check the numbers on the back of boxes/package for sure if you do chose to eat any packaged foods.

    Looking for Easy Protein Snacks

    I like Epic bars as a quick protein snack (they're kind of like a cross between a protein bar and jerky/meat snacks, they're made of meat but they're softer and easier to digest than something like a Slim Jim and are a lot more natural, I especially love the bison and cranberry flavor). My go-to around the house is cottage cheese and yogurt as well, but having to be refrigerated and needing a spoon makes it harder to be truly "portable". I also like to pack slices of ham or turkey rolled up with half a slice of cheese in my lunch, sometimes with a little cup of dressing or some kind of spread to dip them in like mustard. (Plain yellow or brown mustard has, like, no calories!) I'm going to agree with whomever said upthread to try to eat whole foods as opposed to convenience items; a lot of "high protein" items out there are formulated to be keto friendly so they're also going to have a lot of fat in them too which can raise the calorie count to a point where you'd be better off probably eating a small, proper meal as opposed to treating a 300 calorie "protein cookie" as a snack.
  20. Here is my story. I spent years stuck at 210 (I am 5’2) and thousands of dollars on personal trainers, nutritionists etc. watched and recorded everything I ate to no avail and of coarse the only scale movement would be I ate a cookie and gained two pounds. Meanwhile I began collecting every co morbidity - sleep apnea, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes , sever scaring on my liver. After two seperate per ate unsuccessful medically supervised diets I was advised gastric bypass was my best bet. I lot 10 lbs in the lead up (5 days a week of boot camp and strength training and keto diet). I lost another 20 lbs on the per-op liquid diet. Had surgery on March 29th. Lost 5 lbs in the first two days and have had no movement since. Walking 3 times a day at 30 minutes each. Drinking 70 oz of water and at least 90 g of protein plus all of the supplements. I know there is a three week stall but I am on a 3 day stall (at the time when weight loss is suppose to be the easiest). This was my last hope and I am starting to feel hopeless.
  21. I am so happy to hear that. I'm on day 7 of the keto preop diet and although it has gotten easier exhaustion-wise and foggy-wise, the headaches are still not gone. I agree about the higher energy levels though and am also so excited for my body to change. Keep up the good work. Happy to be on this journey together!
  22. Hi Seif_s88, Yes I can relate. I lost about 100 pounds and have gained back about 50. 10 days ago I restarted a keto diet which has worked for me in the past. Down 10 pounds so far. I find that the keto diet helps with cravings and I like the discipline. I check my urine ketones every morning, and I find that to be motivating, as well as seeing the scale move down. I remembered to get baseline measurements, so I can see progress that way too. Omgoodness- body image issues. I get that too. I am 55 and was sleeved almost 10 years ago. The ups and downs sometimes make my head spin. Some days I look in the mirror and am shocked to how time has gone by. Overall, I try to be kind to myself. When I get too much in my head about my appearance, I try to remind myself that I am more than this body. So much more.. and so are you

    Low On Iron

    Hi All, I have low Iron. I just received my 2nd infusion 2 days ago. I am happy to answer any questions From my understanding, the low iron is a complication of the gastric sleeve, as it causes me to not be able to absorb enough iron. I tried everything I could think of, but it didn't help. I felt terrible for a longtime with significant fatigue. After the infusions I feel rather weak and tired for a day, but overall feeling mucho better with increase physical energy and mental clarity-- but I also started keto a week ago, and that feels good ,too. It sounds like my hematologist will redraw my iron levels in a about 2-3 months to see if I need more infusions. Yes it was very expensive-- about $1700 per infusion (my insurance is covering it).

    Robard pre-op diet

    Which cost $200 - the Robards or another one? Are the $200 ones those you were advised to use by your surgeon or medical team? Usually we say follow your surgeon’s & medical team’s plan because it’s in place to best support you lose weight & make the surgery easier & safer. There likely is a specific reason your surgeon recommended the shakes they did. But if the expense is a concern (& $200 does seem excessive - does your insurance cover it?) I’d speak to your surgeon & ask for alternatives. My surgeon puts different patients on different pre surgery plans. For example he sent me to a dietician & did keto for the two weeks. He sent my friend (who had more to lose & pre existing health issues which I didn’t) to the hospital’s weight loss clinic to do their shake plan.
