    March 23 buddies yet?

I found this image and it has given me so much comfort. I've also been doing a lot of Googling bc my surgery center hasn't given much guidance around anything other than protein and liquid goals. From what I've read, at this time post-op I should be getting around 500 cals per day, and eating 1/4 c. to 1/2 c. at each sitting (every 3-4 hrs). For reference, I was sleeved on 3/24/23. I look at multiple sites of reputable surgery centers before I decide what to "believe". Hang in there friends! We got this!

    Any April Surgery Dates?

I heard back from my dr today that they are going to look at bg levels after 30 and 90 days before they make any adjustments. Mainly bc with the weight change will come more blood glucose changes as well. Hope you are doing well after your surgery 😊

    Hurry Up and Wait!

So you got options. But let me start with this advice, that will help you stay sane. Do not judge others journeys against your own. You will go crazy. I finally had surgery after three attempts, I will lay out each timeline. First surgeon, Meeting in november, decided to start program in january bc I would meet my deductible and my insurance requirements, I could be done in about 8 weeks, because all I needed was one dietician appt and a physch eval. My insurance added it as a blacklisted item when the year changed over so I didn't get it. This doctor also was heavy on sleeve, and said that bypass wasn't important and he felt was overdone. Second. Was going to go to mexico. I filled out the only paper, and had a call with a coordinator in 48 hrs with approval. LIterally could have scheduled 2 weeks out, If I had the money in hand. I would have had a 14 day clear diet with them or else they could have gotten me in sooner, lol. Custody battle took my surgery money, so, cancelled. Third time the charm My surgeon was heavy bypass. And I am glad bc in my EGD they were able to see I had silent reflux and lots of ulcers. So I needed bypass regardless. I had my first appt May 2nd, and was given a list of requirements that my surgeon had, and another sheet with my insurance requirements. My Ins reqd a phych eval, a dietician clearance, and a recommendation letter. My surgeons office requires phych eval, 4 dietician classes to be completed 1x a week while on preop diet, 1 dietician meeting a month prior to start preop, EGD, and if needed based on medical records cardio and EKG. I left the appt on May 2nd with my EGD appoint, that was 6 ish weeks out, mid June. I didn't understand that I was supposed to make the phych appt, so that was kinda stalled, but they sent everything to insurance for approval in mid august. I started the 1 month preop labor day weekend and had surgery Oct 3rd. But insurance companies can require things that will make it longer, esp if they require a supervising diet.

    Week 2- hunger?

This is what tricked me at first. My tummy would be "growling" and I'd think I was hungry bc that was a good cue before surgery. Now I know that my stomach growls after I eat.

    Low On Iron

Hi fed-up, I was told by dietician that iron should be taken with vitamin c as it helps the absorption. That iron alone is very difficult for the body to take in. I hope this helps! Sent from my SM-S901U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Best protein bar?

i use either built bars or pure protien bars. i get built bars from sams bc they are expensive, and i get boxes of pure protien at walmart or singles from gas stations and most regular grocery stores. I also have gotten quest from convenience stores in a pinch
  8. I'm one year and 2 months out from MGB. I had my surgery in Egypt (self paid) end of January 2022. Starting weight 149 kg, current weight 78.8 kg (this morning). This forum has been a huge help for me since I did the surgery without any proper research which is not something that I'd usually do but I was really frustrated and fed up with trying to lose weight and not getting any lasting results. I'm not currently following any specific diet and I eat whatever I want (in very small quantities) - please don't tell my doctor haha. I eat my protein first, followed by vegetables and salad and then carbs if I'm still not full. I take 1/2 teaspoon of sugar with my morning coffee. Of course, I had to follow the program that was given to me after the surgery. I had a long stall for the past 3 months or so but luckily I'm losing again since I started fasting (the fasting month started 14 days ago). My current target is 70 kg (I'm 170 cm tall) and I can't wait to lose the last 9 kgs. I got a mountain bike when I was 120 kg and have been riding it around my house which helped with the weight loss. The longest distance for me was 8 km. It has been raining almost every night here and I've not been able to use the bike for almost 3 months or so.Hopefully the weather will improve soon. I'm working in a remote town and there is a small gym here. I'm to check it out next month. Here is a photo of me around 2013 that I found while organizing my laptop folders vs me this morning. Needless to say, life is getting better and better overall and I can't wait to try all the things that I've not been able to do because of my weight.
  9. I am 5-6, 209lbs and on Wednesday, 3/15/23 I had an endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty aka ESG. I elected to stay over the first night and came home on Thursday, 3/16. I was in tremendous pain and could not keep water down. On Saturday 3/8, I phoned an IV service to come and hydrate me. They couldn’t find a vein. I knew I was need of emergent medics care so I called an ambulance. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, I was rushed into surgery and put into a coma. What my family learned is that my Bariatric surgeon had left a hole in my stomach and punctured my lung. My thoracic cavity was mixed with various fluids and I was slowly drowning as my lung capacity diminished Days later they found another hole in my stomach and I underwent a third surgery to correct that. Had I not called the ambulance when I did, I would have died Fortunately the hospital kept me fed and hydrated intravenously. Today is my first day home and I’m doing everything I can to sip enough water and protein. I wonder if life will ever be the same for me i have one more follow up procedure which I’m dreading. I deeply regret the decision to do this surgery, it almost cost me my like and the trauma is endless

    Low On Iron

Hi fed- up. So sorry to hear about your situation. To answer your questions- I had one and then the 2nd infusion about a week later. No not painful at all- just an IV poke. The first infusion took an hour and a half- just to watch for side effects. The second infusion was about 20 minutes. No major Side effects. Kinda tired the day after. The infusion felt a little cold going in. Perhaps a little achy in the bones the night after the infusion- but all mild and transient. However there are major adverse effects risks like low phosphorus in the blood that could lead to increase in fractures and other yucky stuff. By the way - The name of the medication was Injectafer. Hope this helps you out. Sincerely, tink

    ESG Surgery 03/14/23!

@kmacintosh glad to hear you are doing better. As far as work and being able to get your protein in during work hours, could you pull your manager to the side and explain to them bc of a medical procedure you had, you need to be able to drink a diet supplement at your desk during the day.
  13. I have discovered Premier Protein cereal as a good alternative in the mornings. I have a small bowl of the berries flavor cereal with a scoop or so of plain yogurt and almond milk or regular milk, let it sit for a good 20 minutes to soften (bc it is too hard and crunchy otherwise), and then enjoy. It adds about 30g of protein to start my day and I find it enjoyable.
  14. Currently wearing clothes that are 1-2 sizes too big bc I am too cheap to buy much of anything. I need to go get out my "skinny" clothes so I can have something to wear that isn't falling off me. I buy all my Target clothes online. I usually see something in the store, look it up on the app, add it to my "saved for later" cart. Then I watch for sales. Their dresses are 30% off right now. I did order a size LARGE and think I'll be there by the time it is in season. 😀

    Horrible Constipation

I take 400mg of magnesium a day. I looked at how much was in my multivitamin and then I add an extra magnesium supplement to get to 400mg. I originally started taking it to help with migraines but it also helps with my (former) chronic constipation. I don't buy anything fancy, just whatever they have at a big box store. Of course, ask your doctor if this is okay for you to add. ETA: Oh, I take it at night bc it can make you a little sleepy. It helped me go to sleep, as well!

    Food Before and After Photos

I have some hospital meals to post as well. They couldn't really do vegan (well, if you like starving it would have been possible I guess) but vegetarian minus the lactose was possible and I felt well fed.
  17. hey yall!! Hope all is well. Well as far as me I been back in the hospital since Wednesday. Still vomiting etc. I had a procedure done yesterday. laparoscopic diagnostic, endoscopy and adhesion. removed. The adhesions took 2 hrs to remove. My surgeon said i'm a rare case. Just two weeks ago she removed scar tissue that was causing my stomach to twist. Now this procedure she considered to be extensive and was very complex. She said my stomach keep twisting and is very tender. She said I had accumulated more scar tissue and a bunch of other terms she used. She had to use special tools to lift my liver bc my sleeve was tethered to my live. In which my liver had dense adhesions attached to it as well. She believes that she got most off but states there was a section that was more difficult. For this she will have to go back in to attempt to remove more and dilate my sleeve again because there is a portion that showed a stricture. Oddly she said none of the showed up on the upper gi or endoscopy that I had done two weeks ago. Trying to remain positive and hope for better days. I dope hope that I get discharged soon as I'm very exhausted and mentally drained.

    PROTIEN BARS AND YOUR PLAN

right, i do it with a fruit for breakfast bc its the easiest thing and with having half it makes sense to have it with the fruit. if i could just eat a whole and thne move the fruit to another meal that would be great

    Recommendations

I can tell you who you shouldn't use. Do NOT use Dr. Selim Illan at BC Hospital and coordinators Bill Yanez and Stacy Illan. They embezzled a ton of my money, and Dr. Illan BOTCHED up my surgery TWICE!!! There are many great options in Mexico. Don't chance it with a dishonest surgeon.

    What are your slider foods?

Yes, I'm no whipper snapper so I have also watched words evolve over my life. The whole "truth" thing drives me bonkers. But that is for another forum. My dietician told me that she considers slider foods those that you can eat in larger quantities bc they just slide through your upper digestive tract and don't make you full. If carrots are the only "slider food" I get, I'll be pleased. I've not yet tried any kind of potato, grain, or "junk" food. I sat down with a little tray of carrots and cheese that come prepackaged. I ate the cheese first, probably 2 ounces, and then started on the carrots. Before I knew it, there were only 2 left. There were probably 1/3 - 1/2 cup of carrots before. Much more than I thought I could eat 2 months post-op. I'll be off your lawn now, Tek. 😂
  21. Well, make sure you keep telling the Dr's bc after I made that post last week I ended up and am still in the hospital as of today.... they found infection from a perforation of my stomach... last night they cleaned out infection and I currently have 2 drains... also, they found a hiatal hernia that had to be removed from my esophagus... if you aren't getting better, don't let them tell you nothing is wrong... listen to your body!
  22. Edited - removing question bc I just saw update

    Any 50yo or older?

This isn’t a straight forward question. What does your surgeon recommend & what do your blood tests show you need? What surgery are you having? For example, I have a sleeve & only had to take a multivitamin & a vitamin D (first couple of months only). Others are advised to take iron, calcium, multi Bs, etc. I also didn’t continue with any vitamins after I reached goal (didn’t need to as my blood work showed absorbed all I needed from what I ate). Others continue to take vitamins & will forever. (I do take Vitamin D in winter as I drop a little then.)
