    mushies

Last night I made dinner for my husband and since I'm not cooking, I stocked up at Trader Joes. They make a "Turkey Bolognese" sauce that I would call a "mushie". I'm a vegetarian so I didn't eat it but if I wasn't I would have. It's 80 calories a half cup and 7 oz of protein. He said it was very good and the consistency was perfect for that stage of lap band eating. You can just microwave it or put it in a sauce pan on the stove--already cooked. He said it tasted homemade and from what I could tell, I agree. I recommend it.

    How much fat per day?

Well I really do love Edamame. So delicious and healthy for you. Here is an edamame burger recipe that is a staple in my diet (I make these almost once a week). Violinist With A Band: Edamame Burger Recipe If there is a supermarket near you that has raw edamame on their salad bar (like Whole Foods), you can skip the step where you cook the edamame. This recipe also uses the whole grain millet which is an awesome, very underused food (its actually a seed). I also make falafel and hummus a lot (chickpeas). I bake the falafel instead of deep frying. If you like the fried taste of falafel you could pan fry them using a nonstick pan and some cooking spray. I'm a sucker for Peanut Butter too. Its fine if you just watch how much of it you're eating and make sure you budget your calories for it. Sometimes I do a bean dip with black Beans and fat free refried beans with tofu which is so yummy. I do a similar vegetarian chili with kidney and pinto beans (and tofu). And I have a recipe for a great red lentil Soup (lentils are beans!) with barley (which is a great source of fiber).

    C'mon, brag a little! :)

The Band has changed my life.......I am one of those people who never count calories, nor do I ever measure/weigh food portions.....(I did i the first 6 months) I reached my weight loss goal in 12 months.... What I do do, is live a new life...with eating totally under control...... I have many friends who are normal weight, enjoy eating/drinking things in life, and you NEVER hear them complain about dieting, counting calories, etc etc.... What you do notice is that they NEVER make total pigs of themselves, as a matter of fact they do not eat all that much at all!!! You will also observe they have very active lifestyles, filled with things like cross country cycling, hiking, running, kayaking...etc, etc.... My skinny fit friends are all also very health conscious, many vegetarians, never eat junk, into organic foods, no sugars, no artificial crap..... THIS IS THE LIFESTYLE I NOW LIVE....Dieting is a dirty word!!! The only difference between me and those who are normal weight, healthy and fit and non banded, is that in the background I have the band still in charge (not a tool) and dictating my eating behaviors. And no one needs to know this.....otherwise I am one of them.... Yes, I had to complete the lap band journey first, had to get my band properly adjusted enduring many stuck/slime episodes to get there, had to learn new eating lessons, had to learn to give up certain foods, had to learn to "Listen" to my band and stop eating when it is time to stop eating....also I had to get my band properly adjusted to where I am not only in the Green, Bug after being there for over a year I have found my "Groove", my "New Lifestyle" As long as the band is there, with no complications, I HAVE NO FEAR of ever gaining weight EVER AGAIN....... I read posts from people who say they have failed and gained all their weight back....I scratch my head and wonder if they were ever there in the first place, and were just on another diet with the band being nothing more than playing a small part in their process......(a tool) Of Course, medical problems are a different issue...... I am happy to say, along with my new life, I have no current medical conditions or concerns....Once upon a time I had diabetes with daily insulin injections, high blood pressure, cholesterol, lipids, you name it....all that went away as my life and weight changed.... I also suffered from Coronary Artery Disease, had one heart Attack resulting in Heart Surgery....but now I have no side affects, running 5 miles a day with no shortness of breath.....like my cardiologist said after my last nuclear stress test, I am as healthy as someone 30 years younger.... So, I am happy to say that I have completely and successfully traveled through the Lap band Journey, coming out on the other side a new person with a new lifestyle. BTW, with my new way of living, I have NOT gained one single pound, nor have I gotten stuck/slimed in about a year now....... I'm not loosing weight anymore either, as was explained to me my body will stop loosing when it feel it wants to, when there is nothing left to loose - Low Body Fat %.....and mine is very low..... So you see....there is a life after Lap band....Once you learn all your lessons, loose all the weight, learn to let the band do what it was designed to do, you can come out the other side a different person....but it is up to you to make the hard decisions, and not back down as I see so many people do..... I read all the posts here from other people talking about Dieting, counting calories, measuring food....are you allowed to do this or that????......I keep my mouth shut, knowing I was there in the first 6 months also.......... 80%, if not more, of the members on this forum are either just starting out, or still getting through their weight loss......so you see it is hard to take part in many discussions.....but I do belong to other groups, on in particular, that are smaller made up of people in a more advanced stage...that keeps me sane....

  5. Hello and thanks for your post. I have been a vegetarian before and even vegan for a short while - back then I found dairy too hard to give up but believe I can do it now - but back in my previous veggie days I never paid a lot of attention to how much protein I was taking in. So that will be a new angle for me with the band. I have many reasons for wanting to get back to a vegan diet, health being an important reason but also have concerns about the environment and the cruelty to the animals we raise in such horrible conditions so that we can eat them. I will take your advise and post on the post op boards - thanks for that suggestion :-) Hi there, I'm a fish-eating vegetarian or a pescatarian (I am not really a fan of that word). I've been so since October of 2008. I was banded last month. I, too, intend to go vegan at some point. I think it would be pretty easy to do it with the band. The majority of your protein would probably come from soy protein shakes. I found one organic whey protein but I think I might be lactose intolerant so I couldn't use that one. I ate a lot of vegetarian fat free refried beans, lentils and tuna on my mushy stage. For my liquid stage, I used mushroom stock and vegetable broth. If I were you, I might retain a solid protein - like fish - until you really have the hang of getting all your protein in without it. The band is pretty limiting at first and, for me, I had two years under my belt without meat so it wasn't too difficult to figure out how to use what I normally ate with the band. Best of luck to you! You might also want to post this on the post-op thread because I think you may get more responses. I've run across a few people here who are vegetarian.
  6. Well, I for one believe that humans are by their nature split in their personalities; that it is possible for one's mate to cheat on one and yet love one dearly; that it is possible to for one to have an abortion and yet be respectful of life. It is this basic incoherency in the human character that psychologists spend their time in university studying. As an example of this dichotomy: Hitler, the character who had all those Jews demonized and killed off in the most brutal fashion, was also a vegetarian and adored animals. Here was a man who was capable of being tender towards all animals and merciless towards all Jews. Go figure, eh.... He was also a christian, they say.

    The 5:2 Diet

After three fast days without any loss, I changed my aproach a bit, lower carbs on fast day (around 60- being a vegetarian makes it a little harder to keep it low), more raw and nothing before dinner... and lost a pound.... VERY happy to see this. lowering the carbs really helped the Water weight to come off. Still there, and fasting tomorrow... so hope this is a sign the stall is over and I'm heading south again! Good job ladies! Stick with it!

Hello Michigan! ...is this thing on?

The pre-op appointment was good. Paid a whole lot of money, got a body wash to use 3 times before surgery, and then went over specifics for before and after surgery- no bowel cleanse or catheter, woo hoo! My aunt had a sleeve done a little over a year ago and the day before surgery she had to do a bowel cleanse and during surgery she had a catheter. Yikes. The pre-op diet is a challenge but not because I want to eat other things. I'm more concerned with making sure I eat the right things and enough protein. I am a vegetarian so it has been a little trickier. I almost feel like it would be easier to just do 2 drinks as meal replacements and then one high protein meal for dinner. Every surgeon is different.

I started going out to eat 2 weeks ago. My rule of thumb is that I do NOT cook on Friday's. LOL My entire adult life, Friday night was dinner out or take out. So the first Friday I did that, I had crab stuffed flounder that was baked. It was so so tastewise, but my pouch loved it. Then last Friday, we ordered out for lunch. There is a place near here called "Zoup"...soups and sandwiches. I had Lobster Bisque. OMG it was the best thing I have eaten since my surgery. And then for dinner I had chicken pot pie. I really didn't like it very much, but my dog sure did when I brought him home the leftovers. LMAO Broccoli cheese soup has been a LIFESAVER to me. For whatever reason, the creamy soups have been the best texture wise and warmth for my pouch. For Panera, their vegetarian black bean soup is my fave!

I have wanted to try this soup for years. When Carla Hall was on Top Chef she made this and everyone went nuts (pardon the pun) for it. I think hers might have been a vegetarian version. I’m going to look it up and see how hard it is to make, thanks for the reminder. *edited to add a link to hers. It has a lot of ingredients, I think I’ll make this in winter. Korean BBQ w/ my bf this past weekend. We ordered spicy pork, shrimp, marinated thin beef, thin sliced pork belly, and beef tongue. I am saying goodbye to meat for sometime now and thought this would be a good way to end the relationship 😭 Ever since my kidney stone scare I’ve been thinking a lot about my health and I’ve never had a problem even when I was 140 pounds heavier. I’m going to try to go vegan for a bit and see how that works. Before wls there was a point where I was a strict vegetarian for a year but that was easy because I ate a lot of eggs lol Let’s see how long I can go 😅

IDK what the solution is to the time issue is with dry beans I feel like you have to start a week in advanceb because I soaked them at room temp for about 16 hrs with 3 water changes band STILL had to cook them (regular pot) for 1+ hr 😩 The only consolidation is that I made a large batch for a meal prep so several portions went to the freezer (for my vegetarian boyfriend who barely eats vegetarian food... so now I'm fighting back 😂)

Was able to eat about 2.5 oz of it getting in 15 grams of protein. Soooo good and protein/fiber filled. The chips are buried under it haha but they exist, I promise! It’s per kilo (2.2lbs). Lamb has been expensive for a couple of years. Drought & apparently a high demand for Aussie lamb overseas. Blueberries have doubled in price also (from the recent floods) - $12.99 a punnet at my fruit shop but again high quality. If I buy them from the grocery store they’re cheaper but I end up throwing most of those out because they become overripe, soft & mouldy in a day or two. General grocery items have gone up here too. Spend $150 & walk out with like two bags. Crazy. Still have trouble buying certain items. There one day & then no supplies for several weeks or months. Taken to buying doubles of things. I’m a carnivore through in through, @GreenTealael. I enjoy the occasional meat free meal but could never go full vegetarian or vegan like some of your family. But I grew up on a generational farm & my grandfather was a butcher for many years so it’s in my blood 😁😁. Damn that bread you made looks spectacular.

I can't wait to see the results! I also love your food choices. I'm vegetarian (have been since birth and I'm 49 now) - and they are really inspiring. Oh, I meant to ask... where do you buy hazelnut oil? I might have to try out the Braggs Amino acids - I haven't ever used it, I always use Marmite to make my dishes 'meaty'. I LOVE Marmite with a little butter on a Ryvita with cucumber on top. Yum.
  19. Just leave out the bacon topping, sub the chicken stock with mushroom or vegetable broth, and voila! It's vegetarian! (and yes, its so easy BF can totally do it solo, lol) Edited to add: you could probably also make it vegan if you lose the cream...i think it would still be creamy without it if you cook the sweet potatoes longer? Never seen Tofurkey so far. However, there are quite a few decent tasting vegan and/or vegetarian cold cuts available. Not every store carries a good variety though.
  21. Hi there. Its' nice to see a fellow vegetarian on the board!

  22. While I was away camping with my church's Pathfinder club I saw a lot of old friends. This camporee had hundreds of kids from clubs all over the area from Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. It was great to catch up and talk with them. Many of them commented on my weight loss and a few of them talked with me about their recent decision to go vegan. These friends are Adventist as am I. Our church promotes a plant based diet and many of the members are vegetarian. I have resisted the plant based diet for one reason or another over the years, but I feel like I am being led to look into this more and I have started reading Proteinaholic, by Dr. Garth Davis. A big thank you to @Newme17 for introducing me to this book and pushing me to research this. I don't know yet where this will lead me, but I am keeping an open mind and will look at the information and will act on it if I feel it will benefit my health.

My stall has broken!!! The scale said 178.6 this morning. I haven't seen the 170's for at least 11 years. I am beyond amazed and very happy with my decision to have this surgery and reclaim my health. It feels like so many pieces of my life are falling into place this year. I feel better than I have in so many years and I have made so many great friends here along the way. I am feeling blessed today.

    1. Newme17

      Newme17

Awww, you are so welcome! Like you, I'm open, and I feel like there is way more to research and know about a healthier diet than what the western diet is typical of (animal proteins and dairy). I do like my cheese though, but I haven't had much of it in a while. I already know where my findings are leading me (and my husband) and we're doing much better because of it. There is a scripture that says, "everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial" This speaks loud and clear, that in our diets that we can choose to eat whatever, but it doesn't mean it's good for you.

Yay for the stall! I'm happy to hear it. :)

  23. Started transitioning into vegetarianism. First day has gone good so far!

I love vegetarian stuff, and incorporate a LOT of vegetarian recipes into my forever diet. I still do eat animal protein, but much less than many of my bariatric peers. I try hard to get at least half of my protein each day from plant sources.

If you run into any recipes you just love...please share:)

I will totally let you know! I just realized that I haven't really enjoyed the way meat tastes lately... so I wanted to make this change. I've decided to do pescatarianism though instead of straight vegetarianism just to make sure I can get that protein in!

  24. Hello all...

On May 1st. 2018 it will be one year since my Roux-en-Y...gastric bypass..surgery. I had met my goal weight by the end of 2017...I have been able to maintain it since. It was the best thing I have done in my life. I had an easy recovery...(that's me..not everyone does). I did have some issues with "dumping" on occasion, that was the worst of it... ( but not many times)..but have done away with that issue..learning how to eat again..helps the situation.

I started my surgery with a 50 inch waist..and am now at a 34-36 inches (depending on the pants)..LOL. I started my surgery wearing a 4XL shirt and now wearing.. L-XL (depending on the shirt). It is so nice to walk into any men's fashion/clothing store and be able to pick something off the rack and buy it. NO MORE !!!!! big and fat stores for me !!!!!!  LOL People don't recognize me and tell me how great I look. WOW !!!...great for my ego !!!...LOL LOL LOL. I do have some flabby skin issues..and hope by weight lifting or have some surgery to deal with that..but my doctor says I should wait at least another year..in case I lose more weight.

I feel fantastic !!! I am turning 58 yrs old on July 26 th and feel and act 25 yrs.... well maybe 35 yrs. lol lol lol. I wanted to see my 60th B-Day. I have lot's of energy..and have a whole new life. I started my surgery with type 2 diabetes... that was out of control and living on Insulin...I had high Cholesterol and high Blood Pressure..both for which I took medication to control. I no longer take Insulin nor medication for High Blood/Cholesterol. Medication free...yippy !!!! I suffered from Arthritis in my knees and ankles and was popping Type 3 Tylenol like it was candy. It did nothing. No more of that **** !!! LOL. My Doctor is doing cartwheels he's so happy for me !

I am eating healthier than I have in my whole life...I personally have made some serious food eating decisions. I "DON'T" eat white bread, pasta, rice. I eat alternatives. I eat "Gluten free" foods...mostly, well I try !!! lol lol lol . I don't eat enough to worry about calorie counting..I eat by portions...so that's not an issue. I eat a variety of legumes (beans). I eat lot's and lot's and lot's of fruits and vegetables. I am trying to..slowly (yeah not easy) to become a vegetarian. There is so much healthy, good and nutritious food to eat. Without feeling you are depriving yourself. I read labels and mostly buy low fat and fat free items. BUT YOU MUST WATCH FOR SUGAR AND SODIUM CONTENT OR IT'S FUTILE...I have even splurged and had some small nibbles of "junk food" ..chocolate, ice cream, cake, on a special occasion..but look you only live once and once it's out of your system, you get back on track.  I stay away from..and never will go back to fast food or anything battered and deep fried !!!!!!! No burgers, fries, pizza !!! there are alternatives for that. I do admit; I miss "Fish and Chips"..wwwaaaa!!!!!. Look there are websites and blogs out there to guide and help you with all kinds of recipes.

The only thing  I can say is this (I'm not preaching) ...everyone is different. What's good for me may not be good for someone else. You must really want ..want ...want.. to be a better you !!!! It's will power.!!!

I am happier than I have been in a very long time...I was an emotional eater ..like many of you. Like they say food can't give you happiness...only you have the power to be happy and healthy.

I hope this maybe inspiring for someone...I can only "wish you the best" on your adventure and eat healthy and be strong the outcome is near and it will reward you in so many ways.

    ALL THE BEST !!!!22528257_1313341592127518_8132736741614246919_n.thumb.jpg.54e66b1af55ca9139db3e373b1dac482.jpg

Hi Jeffrey, reading about you made me feel much more positive. I am on my preop diet and I think it does make you dread about not being able to enjoy food again. You sound so positive and excited about good wholesome and healthy food that it reminded me not to feel down as I love all that food also and avoiding fish and chips etc shouldn't be a big deal.

It was good to hear about your diabetes as I had gestational twice and was having 3 injections a day, hypo's + worrying about eating all the time etc.

i also have hip dysplagia so I am hoping losing weight takes a lot of my pain away again and I'm able to be more active with my kids.

anyway seeing your lovely photo has made me want to get out in the fresh air and sunshine with kids(I'm in Australia so it's morning here🙂) thanks for the motivation and enthusiasm.

      Hi Jules

I joined this forum a few weeks after my surgery last year. I had a very bad experience with some folks on the site telling me because I was a so called newbie at this Bariatric program. I knew nothing of what I spoke. I would be tempted again, by all the bad foods and that I would fall of the so called "wagon". I would start to regain my weight after a year. Well if that didn't give me more incentive to prove them wrong ..nothing would. I didn't have this invasive surgery for anyone but myself. I really needed to take control of my life again. The health issues I was having were more con than pro. I can only speak for myself, and I'm not preaching. However the best decision I ever made in my life...and I've made some pretty dumb stupid decisions in the past. wwwaaaa!!! LOL

I have become a new person and feel terrific. I wanted to see my 60th B-Day and the way my health was going..that wasn't going to happen especially with the type 2 diabetesarrow-10x10.png. I was afraid of losing a limb due to it. Living on a daily bases with the pain agony was getting unbearable.

I guess what I'm trying to say..is that you must take control, mind over matter and will power is all important. I eat better than ever. I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. I have treats once in a while..I have learnt all kinds of tricks and food hacks to take care of those little cravings from time to time...don't need to feel discouraged ever.

I love going for walks and am very envious that you live in such a climate like Australia...try the cold and snow and ice of the frozen north in Canada...lol. It means a lot of snowbound days during the winter months and feeling like yeah a nice bag of potato chips and some sweet dessert would be great right now just to get through this horrid weather. LOL LOL LOL

I know you will do great. As well you have little ones who need a mommy to run and play with for a very long time. Like I mentioned there are so many alternatives nowadays to healthy eating... not just eating carrot sticks and celery...like a rabbit...lol

      good luck and good health..

      Jeffrey

  25. Had the sleeve procedure 7/3/19. I’ve been vegetarian over 15 years, moving from vegan to vegetarian a few times. Vegan is much better! I find dairy causes a lot of inflammation and so I had to kick the cheese, which I loved. I like the substitutes. Even nutritional yeast can give that cheesy flavor I like.
