Anyone else had to do 'The Weigh Ahead Programme' ?
willow13 replied to luckyknickers57's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had just over 2 year of jumping through those hoops. It took 6 months to get the initial appointment with the psychologist then a further 3 months to begin weekly meetings which started off as a group of 11 but by the end of it all there was only 3 of us (they ran for 12 weeks). We went through the diet sheets, the dietician appointments, the psychologist appointments then I had 5 further individual appointments 2 months apart where I had to convince another dietician and weight loss manager that I was a good candidate for surgery before I saw the surgeon back in November, where he thankfully agreed to my surgery. I have now had an endoscopy (that was horrid) and had another appointment with the dietician and a pre-assessment appointment where I had an ECG, blood pressure, oxygen levels, bloods etc carried out. I begin my pre op diet on monday and as much as I am dreading being in the actual hospital, not worried about the operation just dont like hospitals, I can't wait for march to come around. -
It is up to me to make this work. I have a friend who had a bypass several yrs ago and couldn't figure out why she was gaining weight back. She kept saying 'but I can't eat that much'. We would go to lunch and both would order a cheeseburger. I would get fries. I ate my burger and most of the fries (this is before my surgery) and she would eat half of her burger and just a couple of fries. She would get a to go bag and then mid- afternoon she would eat the rest of her burger and any leftover fries. She ended up eating almost the same thing I did. You will gain weight if you eat too many calories- the sleeve will limit how much you can eat at one sitting, but grazing is very easy and a habit I don't want to get into.

Pre-op diet starts tomorrow
lisalisalisa replied to bb00024's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Make sure that you have protein shakes that you can drink and don't hate. They go a super long way to keep you from being hungry during that time. The hardest part for me, and really, it still is, is my mouth feels yucky from not eating. Have popsicles, they are very soothing! Broth tastes good when you aren't eating! The biggest thing I'd suggest though is that you focus on the goal. You fought so hard to get this revision, do not blow it by cheating on the diet! You dont want to give insurance any excuse to back out. My biggest fear was the surgeon would go in, my liver would be too big and he'd close me up without doing the bypass. It kept me honest lol. Good luck and if you are struggling, come on here and talk about it! -
Hi everyone: Just met with the surgeon here in Bristol, Ct on Thursday. All went well and have decided that a bypass is the best for me. I weigh 242 and am trying to gather my mind on the subject of food. I don't like to cook much as from my stance things that are healthy seem so bland. I don't have any imagination to experiment with different spices and such. She looked at the things I brought in for her to examine and at this point it seems nothing is good. I brought the Equate shake which she said that I should just finish what I have and not to use it. I showed her the Pure Protein Bars and she said it's not a good choice. Then the Care One sold at Stop and Shop and she said that this isn't a good choice either. She wrote down to include protein at each meal and vegetable or fruit, decrease carb Snacks and replace w/veg/fruit/protein. I went and bought cauliflower, carrots, salad green not iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, English cucumber. Not wanting to use bottled dressing I found that without that imagination ended up eating it plain Yuk. I browned some pork thin cut cutlets and that left nothing to be desired. Like I said, no ideas of what to do with this stuff. I'm a casserole type of person so I could always warm things up a day after or so. But this eating healthy is the most trying aspect of this whole life style change. Now with this exercise thing....I fear falling when I walk for health. Last time I did I fell face down on the sidewalk and required 3 stitches on my upper lip and smashed my glasses which required new ones.. Anyone else have this dilemma?

Sleeved with a toddler?
mommyradd replied to DreamsOfSkinny's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have 2 little ones in diapers, and I was sleeved in November. I had to change diapers, but did it on the couch because I didn't want to lift them on the changing table. Almost every other mommy task that I had to do was no different than before surgery. Be sure to rest and not lift heavy things. Also, if there are toys all over, leave them alone, and dad can help baby clean when he gets home. I did bend a lot to clean up after the kids, and it made my incision sore. If you must get help, try CARE (online). I interviewed several people and found two good sitters for date nights. Good luck. -
went to dr for fill very disapointed :(
GoingforGoal replied to ladyjordan's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Oh noooooo.... Scary that her first thought was miscalculation and was willing to bypass a leak. Did you happen to notice the color of the Fluid, was it yellow or cloudy- a classic sign of a leak typically. Hope it really was miscalculation or ?? I dunno..just not a leak -
You should look into the sleeve. The bypass is serious stuff. The band works great - but if you don't get a handle on your issues with food, you may have complications - especially if you are an emotional eater! Sure there are ways to go around the band to get what you want with food - but is that the reason you get the band in the first place?? The most healthy outlook about the band is this: The band provides 50% assistance in weight loss. You provide the other 50% by sticking to the plan and not eating things that go against the band, causing distended pouch, esophagus issues and slippage. I speak from experience and I know, first hand, that all my problems with the band that I am going through right now (I am scheduled for band removal) are as a direct result of my food intake and not paying attention. Yea, I am disappointed in myself - but if I had it to do over again.....I would learn as much as possible prior to band about food/band, I would get treatment for food issues (too many people don't like to admit this one) and I would join a HEAHTLY support group, not one that everyone sits around talking about ways to "get around the band".... I wish you luck. The band truly does work - but you have to do your part...seriously. Don't get lax! Take it seriously - and I also heard there is a new band coming out in June that will replace the old one. Look into it. My message speaks of my experience ONLY. Take what you want and leave the rest. Just remember....never stop trying... the band should be your friend and not your enemy.

Need help convincing hubby!
GratefulHeart replied to zadyju's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I agree - see if you can help your husband get more information about the surgery. Mine was dead set against gastric bypass, but when he saw how lapband works, he was okay with it. Now he loves it! :cool2: -
I have been thinking about Lap Band for several years, but can't seem to convince my husband that it is safe. He freaks out each time I mention it. I have an aunt that had the gastric bypass and has done very well. And he has seen this, but is still very closed minded to the surgery. I have signed up for an seminar and am hopin he will attend with me. Any suggestions? Also, I have BC/BS of Texas. I have inquired in the past about coverage. They told me if it was medically needed, it would be covered. I have checked and a local doctor with high recommendations is a provider. Is there anything that I need to do with my primary doc to start documentation. Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Absolutely take him to a seminar! Once he hears that gastric bypass has a 10% chance of serious complications while lap band has .01% that should help some. Then, being able to ask questions about the specific things that are scaring him should take care of the rest. -
Welcome! I also went back and forth about which surgery to choose. The sleeve seems less scary, but I went with bypass due to my diabetes. Your surgeon can help you make the decision also.

I'm a band to bypass revision myself. Banded in 2011... revised this past March. BEST.CHOICE.EVER. The information on the operation is skewed by old data from older "versions" of the surgery. As medical technology has advanced... this procedure has become exponentially more safe.
-
I was weighing up the choice between a revision to a bypass or doing nothing - I definitely wouldn't be looking at going against my surgeon's advice. My problem ( and my husbands) is that I still have this belief that I "should"be able to do it on my own.

IS anyone having trouble getting info from their doctors?
lindaa replied to Contella2003's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Joe, both my sister and I are nurses, and we both agree that this band business in the US is one of the most frustrating, poorly run, annoying processes we have ever seen. I got my band in Mexico--no problems. 6 weeks from the initial phone call to surgery. My sister has been messing around with this since November, and still doesn't have a surgery date. I have complicatons now and do you think I can get ahold of the local doctor who has been following up? A radiologist told me that my band has slipped and I'm having chest pains--Do you think that maybe they'd return my phone calls? -
For some time now I have been experiencing pain in the port area whenever I eat to fullness. I mean serious "fullness" not just satisfaction. Perhaps even "over-full". The pain is almost like a gas pain but only right in that area and only after eating. Weird. I have an appointment with my surgeon (or his Nurse Practitioner) on the 11th of March but just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this. I have 11.5cc in a 10cc band, last fill was in November.

Misty, I guess the best thing to tell you is that I weighed 326 on November 1st, 2008. I was banded on 11/19/08 and I now weigh 267 and I'm half way to my goal. The band is not a cure all and it does not do all of the work for you but it sure helps! Until my second fill I really didn't have a restriction and I thought maybe my band was screwed up or something. Now, after the second fill I'm just starting to feel the restriction. I've got rid of the weight by following the doctor's orders and did not eat like before even if the band does not restrict at first. I exercise at least an hour a day (I hate it too) but it is really paying off. So, hang in there and keep up the "I can do it attitude".

Totally discouraged
DebHart71 replied to Carfigure's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Protein and veggies in the crockpot!! I tell you that this combination will fill you up (I eat more than what I thought I would be able to.) if you eat good things that will keep you full for longer periods of time you will do better. salad does not stay with you very long and you will be hungry again soon after. Try adding protein to your salad and see how much that helps. Tuna, chicken, or any other type of protein you prefer would do so much for your hunger. I was banded on October 19th and find I cannot eat as much as I used to. My problem is learning to slow down. I tend to still eat fast and then feel so tight all I want to do is lay down and groan. I am learning each day how to work with my band. I do not get my first fill until November 30th and while I am looking forward to the first fill, I need to really use this time to learn how to eat slower and get into the habit of taking my time and chewing more. Good luck to you! -
What Is A Band With Plication
☠carolinagirl☠ replied to Visionary444's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i had this surgery and highly recommend it.. Gastric Plication (Stomach Folding) Gastric Plication is a relatively new procedure that is quickly becoming one of the most popular options in weight loss surgery. It consists in reducing stomach volume by folding the grater curvature of the stomach to its inside part, Forming a tube form or “sleeve type” of pouch, similar to a gastric sleeve surgery, but without THE stomach cutting or stapling required in other surgeries. The pouch is formed by hand stitching and confection. Advantages Reduced Surgical risks compared to a gastric sleeve surgery. There is no foreign body inserted, so there is no foreign body failure. There is no counter indication and a good option for women who would like to get pregnant. It’s a lower cost surgery as it doesn’t require lap band or lap band staple costs. Recuperation time is also quicker than with bypass or gastric sleeve surgeries. -
Hi Linda, I can't believe that the requirements for a diet plan are different state by state. Medicare is federal and I thought all states were the same for everything, guess I just found out differently. I am going tomorrow night to the seminar so I will find out what Missouri has. Hoping that I get everything done so I can have the sleeve in November. Lainie

I have to start my liquid diet now, even before I have a surgery date because I gained 3 pounds since April. I think mostly from quitting smoking. I have everything done, just an ultrasound because they found gallstones when they did my upper GI. I am really dreading it, but hopefully I can get through it. I am waiting my doctor is sending my paperwork to get approval from the ins company, BCBS of Mass. Does anyone have experience with being denied because of a weight gain? Even just 3 pounds? Dr. Didn't seem to be too concerned, but I have to go to the nutritionist to start my liquid diet now, even before getting a surgery date, who she said could be November!! Don't think I can last that long on a liquid diet!!!

I had a surgery date of this Friday, the 24. I went and did my pre-op testing and on the chest x-ray it showed that I had pneumonia! I was wondering why that cough wouldn't go away. So I get to take antibiotics and wait until I have a clear chest x-ray. The next set of surgeries is Nov. 21st and I get to be first! Yeah!!!!!

Hi Angi, I was also banded in November. I have lost 36 pounds so far. Not stellar, by my own standards but I am not complaining. I have a 10 cc band that was primed with 5 cc and have had one adjustment and received 1/2 cc for a total of 5 1/2 cc. I feel as if I am very close to my sweet spot. Right on the bubble. Some days I think I need a tiny push more, others, I think I don't need any more... I don't know, at this point! LOL Anyway. For me, I don't feel "restriction" I feel balanced, satiety for hours after eating, I get satisfied on about 3/4 c. of food, stop eating and that is it for me for at least four hours forward. I eat a couple of times a day. Rarely three. I am just not interested in "three squares". My band doesn't hurt me, it doesn't fight with me, I don't fight with it. I don't get stuck, I don't PB, slime or feel pain. I can eat the foods I choose to eat with reasonable exceptions. I choose to exclude soft, doughy breads, steak and pork chops and so forth from my diet for obvious reasons. I also avoid celery, woody stemmed veggies and so on. Other than that, nothing I want is off the table. I eat Pasta, rice, popcorn (as a treat) I just had clam chowder for lunch. The clams went down just fine with plenty of chewing. I was a famous volume eater before my band. I could put away huge quantities of food in huge bites, in record time. Plug me in and call me Hoover. I could suck it down like a vacuum. Empty my stomach and go back for more. Yep. Epic eater. That was me. My band has freed me from that nonsense. It hasn't "cured" my head hunger but it has given me the physical stop that helps me remember not to push past the point I must not exceed. And I just don't do it. It's bloody marvelous! I am free of food jail. I am not obsessed. I forget about it until I get so hangry that I have to stop and feed myself my little bandster meal then I get on with my day. I love my Little Silicone Friend. I have named her Draca. She is my dragon. My guardian, my power center. My companion in this battle. I couldn't do this without her.
-
Absolutely -- look for the center with the most aftercare support. Having people on staff who are banded themselves is a huge help for them understanding what you are going through. Don't use a surgery center that mostly does bypass surgeries, especially one that gives the same instructions for both. Instead, go with one who specializes in banding and has experience with the long-term aftercare for bandsters. Good luck!
