    Unflavored protein powder

I can't stand any of the Protein shakes I've tried. Instead I use GENEPRO and mix it with sugar free hot chocolate or cream soups. Since it is unflavored whey Protein Powder, it mixes well in milk based foods. Plus the hot chocolate is a treat!
  2. Ok ladies and gents. I am 1 month and 6 days post op from my bypass surgery and my biggest obstacle is getting my protein in. I buy the packs with the cubed meats, cashews and cheese (I am sick of cheese LOL) I am really at this point considering going back to be a pescatarian because those are the items that feel better going down. Non of that scratching, painful feeling I get with chicken or sausage. Now to the point, I am very allergic to artificial sweetners, sugar alcohol and Stevia so is there a simple protein powder shake I can take that does not have any of that (oh and plant based *no whey*)? Genepro unflavored protein powder in the silver bag was perfect, but GNC stopped selling it and I can't seem to find it anywhere. Any suggestions????

    Flavorless Protein powder

I highly recommend Genepro. It is 30 grams of protein for one scoop and it really is flavorless. I add it to my coffee and crystal light lemonade.

    What protein shakes are preferred?

I found that I couldn't stick with one. I've tried quite a few. I liked J-Robb vanilla and chocolate Muscle Milk before surgery and for the first week after surgery. Since then I have developed an intolerance to artificial sweeteners. Can't stand any pre-made drinks or powdered Protein. Someone suggested GENEPRO. I just got it today. It is supposed to be tasteless, ordorless and free of any artificial or real sweeteners. I am looking forward to trying that tomorrow. One tablespoon nets 30 grams protein. Fortunately, I am now able to get at least 60 grams of protein through food at 4 1/2 weeks out. Good luck and best wishes!

    low bmi still obese

Glad to hear you didn't have much pain, I am sooo nervous! Have you tried any unflavored protein? I like the Genepro, barely has a taste in flavored water or gatorade. And you only need 1 tbs for 30g of protein.

    Protein

I'd highly recommend GenePro. It's pretty expensive but, it is worth it 100%. On amazon it is $47 for 47 servings. BUT the key is that the scoop amount is so much smaller, approx. 2 tablespoons for 30grams of protein. I found that when I was only a few weeks post op, I couldn't consume that much liquid. So when I went to mix in unflavored protein powder, the amount of powder wouldn't mix in right. It would be chunky or "grainy". With Genepro, I could still get in my protein requirements with less powder and less liquid. Plus it mixes well with hot and cold liquids.

It depends on what stage you are at in your journey. If you are pre-op now, I wouldn't worry about using protein shakes. Trust me, you will get sick of them soon after surgery, so you don't want to exacerbate the problem by drinking protein shakes before you need to. Best protein sources pre surgery and post surgery are fish and lean meats. Greek yogurt and cottage cheese help as well (just keep the carbs below 20g per yogurt). You can get plant based proteins, as well, but I found it is a lot harder until you get further along. In my first few weeks, I mixed the protein powder with broth, diluted 100% juice, FairLife milk, and I actually made these 2 once jello cups and mixed in the Genepro. Each Jello cup gave me 12.5 grams of protein. As I went into pureed foods, I did a lot of soups. Mostly of my own making, because so many of the store bought soups have too much sodium in them. The recipe for the jello cups: 1 box of sugar free Jello with 5 scoops of GenePro protein. Makes 14, 2oz cups. I bought the cups from the dollar tree. They are plastic with lids that restaurants will send home condiments in.
  8. Genepro is good as well!
  9. I was sleeved on 10-21-14. The first week I had no trouble getting my protein and fluids in, the second week, there didn't seem to be enough hours in the day to get my fluids in and I couldn't tolerate even half of one protein shake. Someone here recommended Genepro Protein, so I ordered it. In the meantime, I quit bothering to even open a protein shake...it was just wasteful as I couldn't drink it anyway. It really weighed heavily on my mind. This past week my nutritionist put me on soft, well chewed food (not breads rice, or pastas yet, but pretty much anything else as long as it is chewed well). And, my Genepro arrived yesterday. I thought "thank heavens...I can eat food AND I have protein that I can mix into my food! Now I can be compliant with my protein intake" Um, not so much. I had been collecting recipes that I could eat at this stage, so I started making a new one everyday since Tuesday. I've not been fond of any of them...and I've made a variety of different things. I can't eat any more than 1-2 Tbls per meal or snack, no matter what it is. And it's not because I'm "full", it's because the taste of ANYTHING literally repulses me. I have to mentally prepare myself before I swallow because it just feels soooo disgusting going down. So if I can't eat that means I can't mix my protein, and I'm obviously not eating enough to get my requirements through the food. Well, this evening I decided that maybe I just didn't really like the new recipes so I decided to make something I've made for years and has always been a favorite. Nope. Same scenario. I literally cannot stand food. I am getting depressed because this isn't going the way I wanted. I have the greatest desire to be compliant and I TRY, every single day. It's not about wanting something different or "cheating", it's that I can't eat. My dietician says "you're early out...just keep trying, it'll get better". *sigh* I guess, but I feel like a failure, even though I'm losing (OF COURSE IM LOSING! I'm starving myself to death...this isn't what I wanted!) sorry for the long vent, but I'm so upset this evening.
  10. My doctor told me could take some of that liquid, like Pepto Bismal, but it's called something else, for nausea. I'll look at my paperwork and find the name for you. Maybe that'll help your nausea. Being nauseous won't help you get to your goals of you can't get your protein in. Also my doctortold me about GenePro, which you can get at UNC. 1 scoop is 30 g of protein and it is flavorless. So you can pour our on anything! Goggle GenePro GNC send read the reviews. They are all from people who have had Gastric Bypass like us and most of the reviews are great! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using BariatricPal mobile app
  11. Been using Genepro for some time but never had it in my coffee until just now. I was low on my Protein intake today and remembered reading your post on how to mix it so it won't clump. It turned out great! Thanks.

    Unflavored protein

Those of you who have used GENEPRO, does your surgical team or Nuts approve it? I haven't found a PDCAAS score on it. It's sad that companies can make any claim on supplements and don't have to answer for it. The FDA does not regulate them. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Clear liquids high in protein?

Amazon sells an unflavored protein powder called Genepro (made by Musclegen). It's expensive, but the serving size is only a tablespoon (30 grams of protein), and you can mix it in pretty much anything. I have it in tea and Crystal Light, and now that I've started purees, I've also mixed it in with Greek yogurt and cottage cheese. It doesn't clump at all, and you can't even taste it. Good luck!
  16. I am just a week post op but I got GENEPRO from GNC. You put a tbls in any liquid and it doesn't change the taste. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  18. I'm stumped by that! I don't understand why you cant have Protein drinks! They are what was pushed the MOST for me and everyone I know who has had this surgery. I hope you get it soon. I ordered "Genepro" from amazon. It is medical grade protein and has 30 grams per small scoop, not sure if you actually absorb the entire 30 but as with any supplement, you don't absorb all of it. I put it in my Water as its flavorless. It does thicken the water slightly but I don't mind it.

    Turkey Day

I'm drinking shakes, eating cottage cheese, unsweetened applesauce, soups- cream of anything , sf yogurt. I add unflavored Protein powder to some of this too. GENEPRO has 30 grams of protein so if you add it to Soup it's a good amount. I have eaten some mashed potatoes although I don't think that's a good choice. I don't get creative with puréed - just the basics. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Post-op aversion to protein drinks?

Thanks for your suggestions. I have been soooo tempted to eat eggs for the same reason - weakness and malnutrition. But I have ordered some Unjury protein powder which I’ve heard is easy to mix and I will try the injury soups as well. Glad I’m not alone in this aversion! Thank you for the suggestion! I have a few things I need to order on amazon so I will add Genepro to my cart.

  22. I am so depressed. I am not a whiner or crier but I've been so upset this past couple weeks. I think my surgery is broken. I was sleeved aug 25,2016. I immediately lost 16 lbs before September came. Then my September weight loss for the ENTIRE month was 11lbs!! ONLY 11lbs! Those 11 lbs were the first 3 weeks of sept because I haven't lost a pound for the last 2 weeks! Every day I step on the scale and cry again. I know I shouldn't weigh myself daily but I'm obsessed and cannot help it. I use GENEPRO and get my Protein in, but fluids are not up to par. I eat 3-4 times a day and no Snacks except a couple days I snacked on a piece of turkey Jerky but once the bag was gone, I haven't snacked at all. I don't know what to do. I'm so scared this won't work and I'm destin to be overweight. I was so excited to do this and read success stories and looked at pics. I had such high expectations. I expected to be 45 lbs down by now. I'm only half there so I feel like I'm failing. Can I hear from some slow losers that have long term results? I need reassurance badly!! Is there anyone this surgery just didn't work for? Come one, come all, I need to know what I'm dealing with. Love this site, it's so informative. I've gotten more advice and help through this site from anyone anywhere. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  23. My doc didn't give me a guideline for calories but I'm not getting more than 600-700. Fluid is suppose to be 64oz. But I'm probably getting 40oz. I've never drank much. Before surgery and as long as I can remember I would go every other morning and get me an unsweet 42oz peach mango tea from the station and that lasts me all of 2 days. My husband says I'm a camel. Now I try harder to drink and only Water tastes good to me now so I'm drinking what I use to drink in 2 days, in one. My docs protein goal for me is 64oz. Which I take 30g of GENEPRO twice daily and then count on my diet to get the other 4 grams. So I'm sure I'm exceeding my protein goals. Thank you for the encouraging words. I have never been one to need them and constantly need validation but this has been a trying time for me. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
