  1. I have gained 25 pounds on the dot and in the last month have only lost 5. So it is clear like you, I have slipped into old habits. We worked too hard for this god damn it. It was NOT easy, it was pain and suffering. SO LETS DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!! I am going back to the old old old diet that I started on. I am going to be eating a clear soup for at least 50 percent of my daily meals. No more junk, no more snacks, NO MORE ALCOHOL. My capacity to eat is still really small. Anyone wanna do a thing for a month? Like a support group? For real, no judging we encourage each other and try to reconnect with the habits that worked.

    Bougie size

Perhaps your friends who self-paid for their surgery in Mexico are more compliant at eating less post-op than the ones that had it covered by insurance in NY because they paid more money out-of-pocket. Or the ones who went to MX had lower BMI so less to lose, or do not suffer from Binge Eating Disorder, or didn’t go back to their old eating habits, or drink less alcohol, or lots of other reasons that could result in better weight loss & maintenance. Just because their bougie was smaller doesn’t mean that’s why they’ve maintained their weight loss compared to others.

    Worried about Mental Health

It has made me BETTER, yes traditionally it is cautioned that surgery makes it worse. Nope, I feel validated, it is a new start to a,new life, no longer in the Blue Put of Depression I am now seeing some sunlight🌟🌞🌟., Like alcoholics we never reach a total cure, but I now have the strenght to keep it in the background, inactivated. And my Wellbutrin has helped, went from 150mg Er twice daily pre to 100mg regular 3 times daily afterward. I have lost 64+ pounds since the end of July, something no ordinary diet or even childbirth and lactation did. God Bless Bradley J Needleman MD who took a chance on a 72 obese has-been, bless Ohio State University and his staff ,thank you for my RNY and most of all, for helping ME believe in ME again. Will prayer, a strong will, and the emotional support of others on Bariatric Pal, I BELIEVE,I,AM GOING TO MAKE IT TO MY FINAL VICTORY! And I know you can d9 it too!

I feel like I blew it

My "bad" wasn't the amount of food. It was my typical choices. Carb, carbs, carbs. Could have made some better choices. Add that to my sugary alcoholic beverages and it was a day of super not so great choices. My really BAD was carbonated alcoholic beverages. More than one. And I enjoyed them too easily. I've lost almost 90 pounds since April and I felt like I just stood at the top of a very slippery slope for myself. Remember, this is my tool but my long term success has to be my choices. And if I'm already trying to go around my tool, I'm afraid I'll be setting myself up for future failure. Stretching my pouch due to carbonation was a true concern for me though. I like having a restriction. In the moment I felt just like I have during every previous diet. Sabotage. Regret. Failure. But the amazing thing with this surgery is that yes, I felt like that. But the next day I didn't stay in my cycle of just screw it. Instead, I still had my typical restriction. I had my tiny meals, exercised, drank my water, and for my own personal mindset I tried on my beginning clothes which literally fell off my body. I'm good. Not as great as I'd like to be. And woah, the bloating from my 'bad' day was off the charts. Here we are 3 days out and my bloating is gone, I'm back on track, and I'm still able to shop at regular stores and not even in the plus section. Life is still amazing!

I feel like I blew it

I think it's because the alcohol went down so easily. Carbonation, not a problem. Sugary combination, not a problem. Like I dipped my toe in the water and hoped I'd get bit by a shark. But, nah, the water's fine. Come on in. I didn't want to really know that I'd have zero reaction to a high sugar drink. I'm doing better today. And biked 10 miles at the gym so I'm feeling better about myself for at least getting my butt there and doing it. It reset my head. Today's a new day.

I feel like I blew it

Sleeves don't stretch, so you're fine there. 6 months is the point at which my team allows alcohol--some other teams want you to wait a full year--so you're probably fine there. I mean, yeah, 3 glasses is a lot, and all the extra water tomorrow to compensate is a good idea. But in the scheme of things, it's no biggie. A sliver of pie one day a year is not how any of us got fat to begin with, and it's not enough to ruin all of your hard work thus far. Go back to your proteins and veggies like nothing happened, and it'll be fine. You don't have to punish yourself with a liquid-only day; just keep doing the work you've been doing thus far, and treat this like what it was: a single day when you indulged more than you meant to--and still way less than you would have before surgery--but just one day out of over 6 months of eating to nourish your body and an upcoming lifetime of doing the same.
  7. I ate decently: small amount of Turkey in small bites, a very small amount of dressing, two bites of mac n cheese... But later I ate a piece of pie with whipped cream. Almost a whole small sliver. And I had 3 alcohol drinks throughout the day (from 12-8pm). Now I have the typical fat, shameful remorse that i always have had after pigging out. But I now have the additional fear DID I RUIN WHAT I HAVE COME THIS FAR WITH? I'm 6.5 mos out. What if I stretched out my sleeve with two glasses of champagne. I drank s-l-o-w but it's still bubbly. Tomorrow has to be a restart day. Protein shakes, water, water, water. I didn't think holidays would be this hard. I thought it'd be me chatting with all the family and hearing how great I look (motivation before dining). But our plans fell through and...I messed up.

    Psych appointment tomorrow

The answer to the question would be true, maybe true, partially false or False. So a question would be, i have never had a problem with alcohol

    How will you handle Thanksgiving?

I'm with @TexasMommy80. I plan to enjoy the food, only in smaller portions. This is the first year I'm not cooking. Most of our family are out of state, so hubby and I just can't see cooking an entire Thanksgiving meal when there's only 2 of us and I eat such small portions. So, for the first time EVER, I am going out for Thanksgiving. We have reservations at a restaurant that serves a traditional meal. I plan to eat what I can and save the rest for later, even pie. I don't traditionally indulge in alcohol, so that won't be an issue. Happy Thanksgiving all!

    Accutane (isotretinoin) after RNY?

I only had surgery 3 weeks ago but my acne has EXPLODED. Both cystic and superficial bacteria. I desperately wanted Accutane, but looking at the risks, I wouldn't feel safe taking it now having gastric, given how fast everything can absorb (like alcohol). I went to the dermatologist last week and it was obvious he had never treated a gastric bypass post-op patient. He wanted to put me on a diuretic... 2 weeks post-op and already suffering from dehydration. So.... just keep in mind that gastric surgery is not that docs specialty and if you don't feel 100% safe taking it, don't. I ended up with a topical antibacterial. Retin-A topical only helps if it's your pores that are clogged. I don't know what type of acne you have.

    Alcohol Is The Enemy-HELP!

I remember reading or hearing that Alcohol is absorbed differently post op and can become an addiction even if you were not prone to it before. So not as simple as transfer addiction, more like regular addiction and the struggle will be tough. If you can avoid that painful path, please try. Try using the supports your team may be able to provide. Kudos on catching it early. Safe Journey

    Alcohol Is The Enemy-HELP!

Happy to read these comments as my surgery is fast approaching (2 weeks) and giving up alcohol is going to be my biggest struggle. I do not drink daily but I do drink often socially and at home sometimes and well, honestly- I love it. So, I know it is a trigger and I do not plan on attempting to incorporate it back in down the road.
  13. I only drink when I'm out and in company now - I used to drink wine every night at home. I'm amazed I don't really miss it, actually! I recently went on a girls' weekend and drank probably 5 glasses of Prosecco each night. I still managed to lose 2 lbs that week. The same is true of when I go on holiday. I don't break the food rules - I eat small plates of good food and drink alcohol at night - and I still lose weight. The most important difference for me is that I'm not hankering after alcohol any more. The surgery stopped the habitual behaviour.
  14. My surgeon is very strict about this. No alcohol for a minimum of 6 months and no carbonated beverages PERIOD. While I don't think a glass of champagne once a year will derail me, I'm in no hurry to break the rules. I tried things my way and obviously that didn't work out so well since I needed gastric sleeve surgery. I realize it's still early in the game for me, I'm just now almost 2 weeks post-op. But I'm not putting myself through all of this to not give it everything. I love wine and enjoying cocktails with my friends. But if I don't get to do that for a while, it's not going to kill me. If I don't succeed in my weight-loss, THAT will kill me. I think there's a fine line. I realize I still have to live my life but I acknowledge that I'll be living it differently than before. I have to.
  15. I lost 100% of my excess weight and have kept it off for 18 months. Things that helped me achieve this: 1. Months PRIOR to gastric bypass, I gave up the following: a. No carbonated or caffeinated beverages or juice b. No alcohol c. No artificial sweeteners d. No fast food e. Minimal processed food, desserts, bread, rice, or pasta f. Stopped drinking during and after meals g. No food funerals 2. I followed my bariatric surgeon’s instructions to the letter and did not advance my diet ahead of schedule. 3. I worked on my food and other issues with a therapist before and after surgery. 4. I started walking more before surgery and continued to increase my daily steps after surgery. 5. I cleaned out my closet of clothes that were too big as I lost weight. 6. I weigh my food because too large portion sizes (with mindless eating) was a main reason I got so heavy. 7. I no longer snack/graze all day. 8. I’m much kinder to myself post-surgery. If I overeat I don’t beat myself up and then binge; instead, I move on and eat less at my next meal. 9. I drink a lot more water now. 10. I weigh myself almost everyday. When I was overweight I didn’t weigh myself, which allowed me to be in denial about my true weight. Now it’s just data and I can course correct quickly if it starts to go up.
  16. Its pretty structured - memory/iq(ish) test, vocab test and a true/false(ish) test. then a discussion about your support system and alcohol use. Not much to prepare for.
  17. I started at BMI 39 went down to 19 and seem to have settled at 22 - 9stone 4lbs in English money! I'd like to drop a few again, but am at a healthy weight so working on tone with exercise. Like orchids and dragons I am post menopausal. I'd lost more than half my bodyweight now slightly less than that but not far off. And folk say I'd lost too much at my lowest which I found funny as it wasn't a concept I was familiar with. My tips for success? Follow rules and beware sugar because it's the devil. Not just because of dumping which is horrible but post dumping it's easy to allow it to sneak back in and I believe it to be a drug at least as dangerous as alcohol... Best of luck to you 😀
  18. I am on vacation in Mexico , eating normal , but working out a lot ., plus enjoying alcohol cuz I know it’s almost over !
  19. There is a carb-sugar craving that probably comes from the bacteria in our guts. We (speaking for myself for sure, but maybe a lot of you) are not strong enough to resist that craving. That’s why I used the sleeve surgery restart of eating as my point to stop eating all processed carbs or sugars and only a bite a day of fruit, or eating any fake sugars, because the sweet tastes keep those bacteria forcing us to crave. I don’t want to gain all the weight back. I’m about 16 months out. So yeah, for me, not eating those carbs has made me not want them at all for real - not lying. If I eat something like a tortilla chip I immediately feel sick-ish. AND I LOVE THAT. I am sure I could force myself to eat cake and pasta and chips and candy again and build up a population of gut bugs who want that stuff. But why??? I’m not fat any more, omg, I like this. I want to live a long time! But with alcohol, I would like to have SOMETHING to drink on special occasions. But I can’t tolerate anything sweet at all. And I don’t want shots or really hard stuff because I am not a big drinker. So I’ve decided to try a Gibson as my first mixed drink. I want something salty not sweet. I bought all the ingredients. Maybe thanksgiving will be my first time to try alcohol. Wish me luck. (Just one drink - hoping I don’t feel yucky or sick but if I do, I guess it’s cannabis only for me now, lol.)
  20. I find that the people on this site want you to be perfectly healthy and not eat breads or pastas or drink alcohol or have sweets. Just protein protein protein but no I cannot just have protein all the time I’ll go crazy! Therefore I started introducing pasta like once a week. I also will allow myself a few bites of a sweet once a week. Also, I am now drinking alcohol once a week. Just one drink. The problem is that you are drinking your calories, which are empty. Therefore just do it once or twice a week. Or one glass a day wouldn’t be horrible either. Keep it in moderation!

    Alcohol Is The Enemy-HELP!

I'm thinking of quitting drinking altogether. I'm 7 months out, I never drank much before and with the no eating and drinking I chose to keep drinking. So I'd drink ALMOST the whole bottle of wine but I don't get drunk fast like they say we do. I don't want to have one glass because hey, what's the point? I never considered myself a food addict, I ate when I was bored, but when I had a food I really liked and bought it once in awhile I would gorge on it. I'm not even a fan of the taste of most wines until the second glass. Transfer addiction. Sadly my mom had this happen with her bypass. She lost the weight, started drinking and became a raging alcoholic for years. Now she's 5 years sober. (12 years post op) But she also put on 40 pounds in that process and with guilt of the embarrassment and also recently losing both her parents she is struggling to get it off. So...anyway I know I won't be one of those people who can have that one glass of wine, I drink to get buzzed which always ends up in la la land and eventually weight gain. Nope. Done. The only place I will miss having a drink is weddings because they are awful sober. Did one 2.5 months post op, that dragged on and people were crazy drunk. So I said I'm thinking of quitting drinking in the beginning of this post, yeah as I've wrote about it and processed it more I'm definitely quitting.
  22. Yikes, I hadn't even thought of how hard a bar might be (I've never been much for bars). Most of the non-alcoholic options involve carbonation (my surgeon also says absolutely not, but some allow it). How low sugar are you? Can you do diluted cranberry, orange or grapefruit? Maybe tomato juice?
  23. 2shea I would love to sneak in my protein water and pour over ice! Is that allowed at bars? I’d assume they think I’m sneaking in alcohol. I think maybe I need to be more selective about where I go. Go to places that do mock tails without a soft drink base and have the menu online so you can see what’s in them.
  24. Not a lot of low calorie options in a bar if you are not doing alcohol or carbonated drinks. I haven't tried them yet, but a friend of mine is quickly becoming addicted to the cold water herbal tea infusions. Perhaps you could take something like that with you. If it were me it I would be asking for a water with a wedge of lime or lemon.
  25. I’m trying to avoid alcohol and my dietician has told me no carbonated drinks. When friends go to the bar, what can I order? I’m looking for something that is relatively common, which many bars would be able to make.
