Does time of day impact fullness?

I get hungrier as the day goes on and thus tend to eat more in the afternoon and evening. If I am busy I can skip eating until noon fairly easily. However, as I eat during the day even though the food empties from your stomach fairly quickly I can't eat a lot if I ate something 30-60 min prior. So if I am prepping dinner and ate a serving of yogurt and fruit or a fiber bar then within an hour if it's time to eat dinner I can only manage a few bites of dinner. If I did that first thing in the morning I would be able to eat and then eat again in 45-60 minutes.

either get a chewable version for now (you can get them online - the only chewables they seem to have in stores are calcium carbonate, and we're supposed to have calcium citrate) OR get a pill cutter and cut the tablets in half. Either should work... there's also a powdered version of calcium citrate called Upcal D (I've only seen it online). You can supposedly mix it into food or beverages (it's tasteless). It doesn't really fully dissolve, though, so I gave up putting it into beverages. I just mixed it in with yogurt or pudding.
  3. Once you get close to or into maintenance you’ll start working out what of your old favourites you can eat or want to eat again. There may be foods or drinks you say never again too, others that you may have occasionally. You might find more nutritious alternatives for some (like vegetable pastas or rice) or you’ll restrict your portion size of a particular food. I say I follow a reduce, restrict or avoid plan. I haven’t really missed anything I avoid or anything I restrict. It hasn’t stopped me going out to dine or socialising with friends & family. The foods I avoid, restrict or have reduced are ones that lead me down the path to my weight struggles so I’ve been happy to bid them farewell or to visit with only occasionally. I cut as much sugar (real, artificial & alternatives) out of my diet as I can but I still had some cake at a friend’s wedding on the weekend - just had two teaspoon. I probably won’t have any other cake, biscuits, desserts, etc. until Christmas. Processed carbs & starchy foods tend to sit heavily in my tummy too (even the vegetable pasta) so I avoid them. I drink full fat milk, cheese & yogurt. I do buy low fat milk at times but it’s usually because it has a longer use by date - LOL! I’ve never been great with carbonation so no real change there for me. If I want something bubbly like sparkling, soda or tonic water I stir it, sip it slowly & let it sit for a while so a lot of the gas escapes. I have alcohol about once a month but usually one glass over a long time. I don’t enjoy it as much. I had champagne at the wedding it just took me almost two hours to drink it. I eat about 60g of protein, 4 serves of fruit & vegetables, 2or 3 serves of dairy, 2 serves of multi/whole grain carbs every day. I haven’t taken any vitamins since 8 months post surgery (early maintenance). I have bloods taken every 3 months & all my levels come back great. But that’s my story & it’s been working for me so far. What you discover works for you will be very personal to you & how you want to live & enjoy your life. Many people continue to meet with their therapist post surgery be it to continue to work through issues or for maintenance. If you think it will help you, do it. Good luck with your surgery.

    Maintenance meal ideas?

Thanks. I meal prepped last week with healthy meals, ate until I was full, and lost some weight. Still within my maintenance weight range so good, but need to add to what I did. I already have healthy grains like Quinoa and even some english muffins in what I did last week. I have enough of what I prepped last week to last this week as well. Turkey Taco Soup Ground Turkey Sloppy Joes on English Muffin Vegetable gratin with turkey dinner sausage Pumpkin and ground chicken chili (from the freezer) Quinoa and ground turkey stuffed bell pepper Chicken breast with pineapple, red onion and cilantro relish, and yellow squash with onions For breakfast I did coffee with a little half and half and either eggs or greek yogurt and for snacks I did popcorn and SF popsicles. This weekend I've eaten off plan so will probably be a little up tomorrow (I won't weight again until Saturday). I think maybe I'll add a little potato to some of the above to try to bump up just a bit. Open to other suggestions. I AM SO grateful for this tool, and know I am still in my honeymoon period so I'm appreciative, I just want to get this right before it gets harder to lose and easier to gain. Thanks! Lori
  5. you'll eventually be able to have some of that again. It's really the first few weeks and months that are pretty restrictive. I'm quite a ways out and really don't have any restrictions anymore and haven't in a long time (by this I mean restrictions placed on me by my surgeon - those were all eventually lifted). At this point it comes down to what my stomach can tolerate. I can drink alcohol again, but I really limit it. I have a glass of wine maybe three or four times a year - but some patients drink more than that. As for carbonation, some surgeons want you to give it up forever - others are OK with it once you're a few months out as long as your stomach can tolerate it (my stomach doesn't tolerate it well so I avoid it - but some people are fine with it). I can't really do much pasta since it sits in my stomach like a ton of bricks, but to be honest, it's been so long that I don't miss it. I've had it occasionally since I've been in maintenance, but I don't eat more than about 1/2 C. I could drink full fat milk if I wanted to, although I'm not a milk drinker. I eat full fat yogurt fairly often, though. You're right about eating what and when you want to, though - there's too much of a risk of putting the weight back on if you do that. I do mostly eat what I want to now - but I monitor myself all the time to make sure it's within reason. The last thing I want is to gain all the weight back (or really, ANY weight!!) anyway, I think a lot of us had those feelings before surgery - but at some point restrictions will loosen up quite a bit and things will seem more normal. P.S. about life never being the same - well in many ways, you're right. I can do things now that I haven't been able to do in years. I no longer sit around worrying that I'm going to have a heart attack and/or never live to see my 60th birthday. I don't worry that I'll get kicked off planes for being too fat or that I'll break furniture. I never get stared at in public places or have to endure nasty comments from kids (and sometimes adults) about my weight. I just blend right into the crowd now!! I also don't have to deal with people giving me "the look" when I'm eating in public, or people looking in my grocery cart at the store (to see what morbidly obese people eat, I guess....). I LOVE my new life and I never, ever want to go back to where I was!!

    Depression after surgery?

I am 5 days post-op; my diet now is 2-3 protein shakes per day, only about 450 calories. My large incision hurts. I am feeling depressed—I think it’s because I read the surgeon’s report. She stated the operation was unusually difficult due to the size of my liver, and it added an hour and a half to the operation. I spent two weeks on the pre-op diet, followed it faithfully with the exception of a little yogurt with sugar on day #6. Why didn’t the diet shrink my liver more, and how can I reverse the “severe hepatomegaly” she included in her report? Was I fat so long that my liver is now ruined? This is depressing!
  7. I have found that using flavored syrups in protein shakes, oatmeal, yogurt etc helps with cravings. I add unflavored protein and maple bourbon pecan skinny syrup. my daughter likes the peanut butter cup flavor. Idealfit has many flavor offerings for protein powder and I also looked into bariatric foodie's protein shake cookbook, available on amazon as it has recipes for ice cream, shakes and desserts. Good luck!

    May Surgeries - check in!

Had mine 5/5. Getting tired of liquids already. Miss yogurt. Yikes! Trying to get creative and hang in there. On the other hand my surgery went great. We can do this!

    Food Before and After Photos

Tonight’s dinner was really just cleaning out the fridge. 😂 Bulgur made with flax milk, water, maple and vanilla extracts, and a smidge of maple syrup. I topped mine with lactose free Fage vanilla yogurt (has vanilla beans in it!!), dried cranberries, sliced almonds, and a drizzle of honey. JUST egg vegan egg substitute with melted cheese with sour cream and salsa. Turkey bacon that I obviously didn’t eat. 🤷‍♀️ Kids also had canned cinnamon rolls that I scrounged a tiny piece from. Not worth a whole roll. I’d rather have more of the bulgur if I had more room! I’ll pack the leftovers for lunch tomorrow night though. Came out to about 380 calories (not including the turkey bacon).

    Trouble standing up straight

I’m on stage 2 until May 18th. My stage 2 is yogurt, shakes, soup broth, and occasional very thin cream of rice. During pre op, my dietician was lousy and didn’t give any useful guidance. 20 minutes before being released from the hospital, the hospital dietician came in and laid out everything perfectly. Yes, coughing or clearing my throat is extremely painful as well. India? Are you recovering in India?

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

Today I am one week post-op. I got to the hospital last week and got prepped and then surgery was delayed because of an emergency (which scared me a little because it was a patient from the previous day with a leak). I was the last one to go to surgery and the last one to leave so that made for a long day. I had my three bags of fluids, walked the halls and used the restroom and I was ready to walk out of there. Got to the hotel and had a popsicle and walked the halls, took my meds and slept great. I was told I had enough fluids I didn't have to focus too much on them that night. I had minimal pain except for gas pain and some nausea. Clear liquids for 5 days and all I drank was water and diet cran-pineapple. I got to start full liquids Monday and I'm already so over it. I can tolerate one shake and maybe a yogurt a day and still not reaching my water goals but I'm getting those steps in and that helps so much with the gas and even nausea. But as of today I am down a total of 23.8 lbs since pre-op and 10.6 just since surgery, my BP is normal and off meds for that and also one of my insulins. I just really don't have an appetite to even wanna try anything.

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

Today is my one month anniversary. Overall, I've been doing ok. However, the past few days, my little tummy is not happy in the morning. I usually have 8 oz of water while I prepare for work so I can hydrate first thing in the morning. Then I have a protein shake when I first get to work so I can get that out of the way and start the day with a nice load of protein. But, now my tummy says that a protein shake is a no no first thing in the morning. An egg is a no no. Yogurt just doesnt do it for me. So, I've tried lunch for breakfast. That works ok. BUT, now I am also hungry in the morning or something is happening with my stomach. It feels like it wants more substance. I'm on the soft foods stage. Does anyone who is also in the soft foods stage have any recommendations for breakfast? If I don't drink the protein shake first thing in the morning, I also seem to get a little behind with protein for the day. Its hard to catch up once I get really busy with work. Any suggestions? My little tummy has been a happy camper so far. Just started getting pickier during the weekend. LoL.

    Any March Surgeries?

I hi I’m on week seven post op and feel the same way. i’m not hungry and i’m struggling to get 2 shakes a day and a yogurt. i tried a couple of bites of a baked chicken thigh but that was all i could do. And my go to when i feel i don’t have enough protein is a piece of baked haddock.
  15. Ok, a little off-topic, but how do I get that little graphic in everyone's signature? Also, on topic. Before sushi - after the coffee banana yogurt smoothie is on my desk as we speak. Not as cute, but just as yummy.
  16. I, honestly, don't know how people do the full liquid diet pre-op. I thought my surgeon's diet was hard! My diet allowed 6-8oz of protein a day (either meat or yogurt, but not both), two 'healthy' fats (1/4 avocado or 1/4 cup of nuts), 1/2 cup of fruit, and all the veggies you want. I survived mostly off of a veggie soup I made. I basically lived off of it for two weeks and the two 1/4 cups of nuts I ate and the fruit and meat were like heaven lol. It was hard enough on that. But, I did lose 15 pounds on that diet and was told my liver looked great so, it worked. Just try to focus on the end goal, because the diet itself won't be fun...
  17. I hope you are allowed more than just protein shakes and yogurt! For my 14 day diet, I am allowed reduced fat strained cream soups, sugar free jello and puddings, skim milk, and broth. I have broken it up into 4 meals, 200 cal or less. I usually get 80+ grams of protein in that way. I use the isopure non-flavored protein powder and add it to 1 serving of strained soup or broth. That is very satisfying. In the morning, I add the powder to a cup of fat free fairlife milk, and then I sprinkle in some sugar free jello pudding powder--very few calories, but a nice flavor without the cloying sweet. I basically add protein to 3 of the 4 meals, and the last is just broth. Don't forget fluids! I drink water constantly. I find that having specific times that I eat helps. (6:30, 10:30, 2:30, and 6:30). These are actually the same times that I would normally eat before the pre-op diet--so it was an easy transition. If I get a little hungry, I might have a meal a little earlier, but then I find I'm not as hungry for the next meal. Either way, I can always ask myself, "Can I go another hour?" Finally, I would wait. You are only trying to shrink your liver for surgery. Instead of trying to master the diet, just make healthy changes (if you haven't already) and maybe have one shake a day, just to get used to them. Once you hit those days where you HAVE to do it, you will probably find it easier to stick to it. You will find that you may have more energy and you may start to feel better. I found that I had headaches the first two or three days, in the afternoon. Sometimes I get hungry, but by the time I have had my 4th meal, I'm not. I have also started taking Miralax everyday so that I poop regularly. I didn't start that until day 4 or 5 though. Hoping the best for you!
  18. Hi all! I had my final consult with the surgeon last week and paperwork has been submitted for insurance approval! I am hoping to schedule surgery for sometime in July, if all goes well. My surgeon requires a 14 day liquid only protein diet prior to surgery (3 protein shakes and 1 small yogurt per day). In an attempt to 'practice' and get a sense for what this will be like, I have tried to follow this diet a few times. And by late afternoon each time, I cave and eat something. I don't know how I will be able to do this for 2 weeks! I am fully invested in this process and committed to this new lifestyle but really find it hard to do only liquids. Any suggestions? Tips? Greatly appreciated

    Maintenance meal ideas?

What about adding in some "whole grains" like brown/wild rice, quinoa, sweet potatoes, etc? Or fruits and vegetables, once you've eaten enough protein. I haven't had surgery yet, so I'm eating about 1400 calories a day. I usually have a protein shake or steel cut oats with protein powder for break fast, and for lunch I might have tuna fish with light miracle whip and whole grain rice cakes with a red bell pepper or dinner leftovers. For dinner I might have meatballs in red curry, or turkey chili with beans topped with shredded cheese and fat free greek yogurt, or chicken curry, or deli turkey and cheese in a low-carb wrap sauteed in non-stick spray. If I really want dessert I'll have a ten gram square of chocolate or a half cup of light ice cream. For a snack I might have a cheese stick or a banana or pistachios. I also roast a lot of vegetables to eat with my meals and as snacks.

    Yogurt

Hey, I was able to find the yogurt. I like it better than Oikos. It's less sour and creamier.

    NSV of sorts

This morning our parent association put out a beautiful spread for us for teacher appreciation week. They always do such a great job and they had juice, coffee, tons of great pastries and breakfast items - in the past I would had probably taken a few donuts or crumb cakes and maybe even later gone back for more. Today (5 weeks post op) I looked at it all, enjoyed just the fact that they brought it for us, thanked them, and took a small cup of decaf coffee and an activia yogurt. I only had a few sips of coffee and half of the yogurt because its really high in sugar but it came so naturally almost to admire all of those treats, think about how good they probably are but then say "thats not for me, but these options are for me." And I didn't even have to finish what I took - it was a nice treat outside of my usual meal planning and now I just continue on my day. I'm quite proud of myself for not even considering the other things, or even feeling as if I was missing out by not having them.

    Any March Surgeries?

I’ll be 6 weeks post op on Thursday and I’m in the same exact boat. Minus the yogurt. I have zero hunger, get full after a few bites and nothing sounds or looks appetizing. I know this is the design but it’s demoralizing at the same time. Total and complete mental battle.

    Any March Surgeries?

I will be six weeks post op tomorrow and was down 34.8 lbs as of yesterday. I’m having a hard time finding anything appetizing to eat and I’m rarely hungry so it’s mostly yogurt these days. My liquids are going down easier lately and I’m grateful for that.
  24. Hello all, I like spicy food like buffalo sauce, a bit of cayenne in my cooking, sriracha, etc. I had some cayenne in a feta/Greek yogurt dip and it was delicious but I **** my pants after!!! Granted, that is generally a side effect, but I stayed away from spicy after that. I ate spicy foods no prob while I was pregnant so this reaction is a surprise. If you enjoy some spice, when was it okay after surgery? I’m ~4 weeks out
  25. I'm 11 months out of sleeve surgery. I came to build a routine in what I eat, and I absolutely enjoy every meal. Even if it's exactly the same as yesterday. I love it. Here's what I eat in a day (and the day after, and the one after.... 🙂 Breakfast: 2 eggs, 4 oz of diced lean ham (pork or turkey, or a turkey patty), 1 oz leek, 1 oz sweet peppers, all scrambled together. Add 6-8 cherry tomatoes and an espresso with 1 oz of 2% milk. Lunch: 5 oz of lean meat (chicken breast, pork loin, beef sirloin) grilled or pan seared, 2 cups of shredded fresh cabbage, one tablespoon of light mayonnaise Dinner: 5 oz of fish (cod, mahi, salmon, tuna, shrimp) and 1 cup of sliced zucchini or snap peas, all pan seared together, plus one Danon Light&Fit yogurt. That's about 1100 calories a day. Throw in the occasional apple or cup of berries, and it's 1200 calories, all in. And that's ALL I've been eating for the last 10 months. The only variation is the type of meat or fish I have. Or what flavor yogurt I choose. I'm not bored, and I look forward to every meal. It makes it easy to shop for and cook. Do yourself a huge favour and throw away ALL the crisps, cakes and any other greasy or sugary snacks you may have in the house. Then don't buy them again. If you really must snack, bite into an apple, or chew on a carrot. It keeps the mouth busy, without adding much caloric content. Oh, and I drink a gallon of water a day, to stave off constipation. Hang in there, believe in yourself, and maybe talk to a therapist or a friend about it.
