  1. Had Surgery on June 21. Lost a total of 88 lbs since pre-op (61 since surgery). It's been so much easier than I feared. No complications whatsoever. Everything is going great. But I've hit a plateau. I am at the same weight now that I was 3 weeks ago. Really the first plateau I've had. I've read enough to know they happen and it's not a reason to panic. I did have a 10 day vacation in there when I didn't track at all though I'm confident I ate well. But other than that and another short vacation, I've tracked every single day since surgery. So I'm not panicking. I know I'm eating right and the weight loss will return. And I'll be very happy when it does. Until then, I'm not panicking ... really, I'm not. Really. 😂

    July 2022 peeps!

Hey July peeps. How is everyone doing? I hope all is well. I haven't been on in a while, but I was taking a break from work and decided to check in. I continue to make decent progress. It's been a little more than 3 months since surgery. I think I lost 25 in the first month, 15 in the second month and 10 in the third. That's 50 lbs post op on top of the 28 pre-op. I seem to be losing 2 lbs per week at this point, and I'm real happy with that. I don't remember when I looked at the menu I got from the dietician. But I think I am doing most everything on it, avoiding carbs, doughy bread, sugars, etc. I take my vitamins. I'm tracking my food in the MFP app and trying to get my protein. Some food/drinks I've found working well for me: Old Wisconsin Turkey Sausage sticks (Walmart and Amazon) Low-fat/Light String Cheese Quest Protein chips (Loaded Taco is my fave but others are good) Body Tech Whey Isolate Protein Powder (Rich Chocolate) Fairlife Protein Shakes (Chocolate and Vanilla) - Delicious! Ole Xtreme Spinach and Herbs tortilla/wraps Occasionally, when I'm out of the house, I have no choice but to eat what is available. If I can't get something low calorie/low carb, I try to modify the item, like removing the bun, not eating the pizza crust, etc. I haven't had heartburn in over a month, but I am still on a prescription (Esomeprazole?) for now. Probably my biggest issue is knowing when to stop eating. At times, I just forget how small my stomach is and keep spooning food in until I fill it to the top. Oh, that's so uncomfortable. LOL.

    DS post op

I am 19 years post op DS with DR Rabkin . I need help with issues I am having at present . Secondary Hyperparathyroidism. Do I need to have a endocrinologist to handle this? My hematologist suggested this since he follows my Iron and gives me the IV iron which works great. Also what is the best osteoporosis med to take?? I am on Prolia which is expensive and my primary care Dr ordered it. I was 264lbs pre DS and am 156 now. I do have dental issues, and autoimmunine issues (may not be DS related) Is there any other long term DS patients out there????

    Reversal

Almost 20 years out and working a full-time job for the last two years and I feel like it's killing me. I can't get in the exercise I need, and my muscles feel as if they're atrophying. My heart is, of course, a muscle and that scares me! What vitamins would specifically help with that? I'm gonna work on getting more protein and water in for sure! Thoughts if you're 10+ years out.

    October 2022 surgery support

I had my sleeve on 10/10/22 two weeks ago today. Surgery went well, just struggling to get my full water intake and protein. Not doing very good with it, seems like there isn’t enough time in the day to have it all, and going off shakes 🙈 anyone else having this problem? I’m 5’2, and was 13 stone 8lb before. So far lost 1 stone 4lb. Todays first day of purée just unsure how to fit all of this food in and have enough protein and water 🙈 any suggestions welcome 🙂

    Feeling Defeated

I got gastric bypass on September 19 2022. So it is fresh in my head. I call it my fat brain. My worst of my bad eating habits is eating late at night and lots of it. For me the second week was when I started to really look at other people and how and what they are. I kept thinking about not how I miss the food and snacks but more on the line of the poison people are stuffing into themselves. I started to really hate all the garbage food i see everywhere. Tv ads , social media, the supermarket and shopping of garbage food people buy. I kept seeing overweight and more and more people struggling. There are so many that are in worse shape than myself and most do not see or have given up. I am proud and happy you are making a change for yourself and family. It isn't going to be an easy road and it will be a long journey. I have been fat for 30 years and my health issues started 15 years ago. But I ignored them and kept trying to find an easy fix. Diet this and diet that. These magic pills or drink this magic shake. As I start seeing the real progress I'm making I find it easier to continue. I have to . Not continuing will only lead me to being in pain, being diabetic, struggling to get up out of bed with out feeling like a truck ran me over, sleep apnea, the list never seems to end. This group of people here are real and also struggle with you. But we are here for eachother. Don't give up. You are stronger than you give yourself credit. If you fall off the wagon. Get you fat ass back on! I'm like most on here struggle yet must keep going on. I send you love and positive vibes for you. You will be and see results in time. I started at 265.5 per surgery. Was 250 at surgery. Dropped to 243 and stalled for almost three weeks and today I'm at 236 five week after surgery. Still feel week and get tired quickly but gaining energy and strength a bit more every day. Keep your nutrition up and your proteins up, take Colligen and biotin, and walk as much as you can. It makes a big difference. . Best wishes and good health!!
  8. Hello all, This is my first post ☺️ I had gastric band procedure done about 10 years ago. I recently had a CT scan and it showed my common bile duct is dilated up to 1.4cm! All the rest of the scan looks good and my blood work is normal. I have read some studies suggesting that weight loss surgeries can cause common bile duct dilation but the studies are referring to bypass and sleeve surgeries. Does anyone have a similar issue with a lap band or any insight on this? Thank you in advance 🦋🌻
  9. Hi all! Very new to this site and about to have gastric sleeve surgery on 10/31. I started the process back in July and it’s all felt pretty quick. I knew I wanted to go through with it after talking to the surgeon and team. They have been absolutely wonderful. I’m currently on the two week pre-op liquid diet (only broth/sugar free jello & popsicles/protein shakes/clear liquids). I think I didn’t fully prepare myself for how difficult it would be to go without solid food. I’ve struggled most of my life with being overweight and overeating and I got tired of it. But I think my attachment to food is still extremely strong. I’m working with a therapist to overcome it and change habits. However, the liquid diet is driving me crazy and making me think this wasn’t the right way to go. I’m afraid I don’t have the strength to go through with it and be successful afterwards. I haven’t cheated on the diet over the past 7 days but I constantly think about it. And I thought it would get easier but it hasn’t. Did anyone else experience this pre-op? Did your feelings change after surgery? It’s just tough to not rely on something that made me so happy before (food). Any advice is much appreciated. 🙂

New to the group Vsg to bypass

Hi I just had the sleeve revised to the bypass on 10/17/22. I would like to be bypass buddies is you want. I am still in the dark as to what all to expect with this surgery but I will pass on anything I have learned
  11. Hi David, Well I have some gerd with weight gain with my vsg surgery which was in 2018. So last year I asked if I can get resleeved due to the weight gain and slight gerd issues. and i was told in California they don’t do that the only option I had was bypass, So I went with that..my surgery was cancelled at 0100 last year due to my iron levels. I had to do the 10 week class as part of the revision requirements. So I’m all cleared now (this year) i plan on doing things way different this time around and actually puttin in the work..with my sleeve I didn’t workout or anything (I don’t advise that all) plus we were in the pandy sooooooo crossing fingers that I find things that help me along this new journey so I stay consistent but it’s all mental Honestly!

    I just don't know

I can see this. I feel it isn't appropriate at work either. I'm gonna talk with him about it tomorrow. I don't feel he does outside of work but we've worked together for about 10 years and so the water is murky. I hope whatever it is that he is honest with me so we can put it behind us.
  13. Wow, my first wls was done on 08/01/2014. My highest recorded weight was 289 and that was underestimate. I am currently 215. I have GERD & 2 hernias! I am in pain each day. I work full-time and have insurance. I found a new doctor. It appears, he is in my corner. I have 2 avenues to pay for this revision. Remember that you are important and obesity is a real disease. 14. I don't think it can be avoided. Some people get gerd after vsg and others do not. But, people who do get gerd after vsg, it is not their fault. Unavoidable. Of course if you eat right before going to bed, it doesn't help the matter but here is a good link that explains in layman's terms why 35% vsg patients get gerd. https://sampadocs.com/2019/12/23/reflux-after-gastric-sleeve/ Here is another very recent study if you would like to read it. It goes into the 3 reasons which contributes to gerd post-vsg, one reason is the shape of the sleeve. It is a hot topic now. https://www.jnmjournal.org/journal/view.html?uid=1643&vmd=Full

    August surgery buddies!

I had my surgery 8/19 and I've lost 26 pounds so far. 41 total from when I started this journey. I still have weight to lose, but what is weird to me is that I feel the opposite. I feel so thin. I know I'm still overweight and need to lose more but feel like a normal person now. I look in the mirror and I can see I'm still fat, but I guess because I know how big I was I feel like I'm much thinner now. I've been losing slowly and I get frustrated, but when I put on my clothes I feel happy. It's almost like I feel thinner than I am. I guess that is a good thing because it has boosted my self esteem. So I guess what I'm saying is I must have reverse body dysmorphia because I'm still a fat girl who feels like she is a thin girl. I'll take it. I'm so much happier than I was 40 lbs ago.

    Surgery Date

New to the app!! Waiting on approval from insurance. Was told I will hear in the next 10 days. Even though I am told I qualify, I am still so nervous that it will be denied!!! Praying for approval and looking forward to this new journey of health!!
  17. I'm now 10 days post op and thought I'd check in. I started at 205, weighed 199 the day of surgery, and am 183 today.

    Regained it all

Thank you. This is very helpful. I don't eat a ton of "bad" food, but I eat one of those small kids chip snap bags several days/week. I pick at food as I prepare dinner. I have a glass (or 2) of wine with dinner, and then night eating puts me over the top. Not bad food, but too much food. I have to get this situation under control. I have to increase the vegetables and go back to protein shakes to cut back on calories. I already go to the gym twice per week and get very respectable workouts in. My goal has never been to be skinny. I'm ecstatic at size 8 and very satisfied at a size 10. I'm at least a 14 at this point and I'm beside myself!

    September surgery buddies!!

Thanks for this advice, I'll have to ask! I also REALLY need to know if I can shorten the time between pills. It's such a chore for me because I'm talking about 30 pills a day right now. Having to wait 10 minutes in between makes this really hard.

    September surgery buddies!!

Waiting to drink has made things difficult but with my latest dietitian meeting he said I didn't really have to wait as long, like 10 before and 20 after. That will help me out a ton. wonder if you talk to your team if they would relax the rules a little. I to am still trying to understand my new stomach. I really can't tell satisfied yet, its empty and then its full lol. I am going through a phase where nothing seems to taste good. Even the stuff I know should taste good, its like food has lost its flavor and is bland. Hopefully that goes away soon. Chicken it seems hates me. I was able to eat 2 oz one night and was perfectly fine. The next night I weighed out 2 oz and I ate about half and for the 1st time since the surgery I was in a lot of pain and I felt like I was going to throw up. I actually wanted to throw up to end the pain lol. It lasted about 1.5 hours and I'm afraid to eat chicken again. Still learning I guess.

    Holiday, Family, and Recovery

For what it is worth, I thought I would share my experience. I had my sleeve Aug. 4. The next week I was walking around the neighborhood, and my family took me on short trips here and there (mall, Costco, etc.). The following week (10 day mark) I was taking short trips on my own, and started working from home. The next week, at the nineteen-day mark, I went back to work at the office. The biggest challenge for me was fatigue, followed by mild pain and discomfort, particularly on bumpy roads. I and others recognize that everyone recovers differently, but hopefully this helps you. The biggest piece of advice I could offer, is to listen attentively to your body. When you are tired, it is good to rest. Rest early and often enough so you don't get worn out.

    Gastric bypass - self pay

Wow reading this topic I'm very fortunate I qualified for surgery here in Canada. It did take about a year of screaming and follow ups. In the end all was covered under ohip . Ontario health insurance policy and did not pay directly out of pocket. Most people who start the process do not fill requirements. They don't follow guidelines or miss appointment or ignore preset goals. I was informen that 85% give up and of those that do the surgery 60 % regain the weight back in 5 to 10 years. I know of two people that did surgery and one gained weight back and the other is still keeping it off. So I am truly wishing you all positive thoughts encouragement and support in all of us on this weight loss journey!
  23. I talked with my pharmacist and told her of my surgery and sleeping struggles. She recommended I can take melatonin . I found these that are 3mg. A recommended dose can be from 5 to 10 mg. Si day one I tried just one 3mg. I slept ok. But still struggled a bit next day I tried two 3mg. And was great. Just to see I tried three 3 mg the following day and wes lights out quickly. Awesome! So I found that for me 2 or 3 work great. I try to keep it at two but I have the option of three. So I would ask your pharmacist and see what they would recommend. I also if woke up at night have a small glass of warm milk. And nighty night.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

How very glad to hear you're still doing great and almost there to your goal. I have kinda stalled for the last 2 months or so. But it's also cuz I have been travelling and wasn't following the plan to the T. I do want to lose another 10 or 15. Let's see if I make it. I am kinda happy with 120 but a bit wary of the 10-20 pounds bounce that can happen in year 2 or 3. Hence, I want to make myself steady around 105 or so, so even if I were to gain a little, I'll be alright.

    Spatial awareness

I pick up shirts now and I instantly think there's no way it will fit. haha We went to a show over the weekend and I wanted a shirt. I asked for a XL and when I picked it up to look at I was like that's not fitting but I will get it for later. haha I went home and put it on and SURPRISE! It fit, a little tighter than I would probably wear because of my skin rolls but another 10 lbs and it will be perfect! PS: I was a 3-5X depending on cut. So exciting to know I am almost out of the "X"s. haha
