    Merry Christmas from Aruba

How'd we ever get out of such a wonderful habit? The last 10 years my two sons were living at home we left the day after Christmas and spent a week in the Islands, then along came grandkids and no more Christmas trips. Hmmmm, maybe it was really due to my weight and the grandkids were just a good excuse, time to get back into that old tradition.

    HELP needed in Oklahoma

Hi Steph, I have United Insurance that did not pay as well as a surgery for hernia repair. I went to TrueResults in Richardson, TX to go through a hernia repair/lapband placement at the same time. I did not know I had a hernia, but was told that 9/10 obese people have one an its a product of frequent overeating. Through True Results, they did a payment plan with me of 266 a month for 2 years in addition to what my insurance paid for the hernia repair. You migh give them a call. I was in Norman a few days ago and ate at Chili's with my husband. Ate one babybackrib and about 4 fries, all I could hold. Had my surgery on June 10 and am down 40+ pounds so far. Hope this helps.

    New to this site

I am newby, for a year i've been wanting to this surgery. My doctor just tells me to loose weight on my own... I am 250lbs 5'4 and have been overweight 10+. How do you get your doctor to approve this surgery?
  4. Hi my name is Dawn. I have been struggling with my weight since my early 20's when I became pregnant with my first child. After that my weight just kept getting heavier and heavier. I tried every diet you could imagine. Sure it worked for a few months and then I would spiral out of control and gain all of my weight back and then some. In 2001 I had open heart surgery for an Aortic Aneurysm. They also replaced my valve. At the time I had a pigs valve which only lasts for about 10 years. I chose this because I really didn't want to take blood thinner for the rest of my life because I was only 34. So soon I will need another open heart surgery. So my cardiologist told me that if I didn't lose the weight, I could wind up dieing on the table. That was my wake up call. I was not going to leave my 2 children (even though they are grown now), one of them having Down Syndrome. In April of 2009 I decided to attend a seminar. Then in May was the start of my 6 month journey before I had my lapband surgery. I then found out that I was borderline everything (diabetes, fatty liver, cholesterol, Sleep Apnea..etc.) On October 23, 2009 I had my surgery and it was the best thing that I could have done for myself. The only thing that I regret is not getting it done sooner. I am no longer borderline anything. And today I was told that I no longer have sleep Apnea and can get rid of my CPAP machine. I AM SO HAPPY!!! You know it's the small things in life that amaze me. Things that you miss when you are heavy. Like being able to cross your legs, tie your shoes, pick up things off the floor, being able to walk without having to stop over and over again. And most of all having people including your family come up to you and say, "I didn't recognize you. You look so good!" If I had to do this all over again I would do it in a heart beat. I went from 304 to 217. I have 34lbs to go until goal. I went from a size 26 to a 14. And I haven't been this size since 1989. My self esteem is back and I feel very good about myself.
  5. I don't like the way I feel after I eat. I'm 10 weeks pot op. Does it get better over time?

    Craving Pasta?

I also suggest edamame pasta. High in protein... Amazingly, being Italian, I do not want or crave pasta products. I'll take it as a gift. I've eaten my share of pasta in my previous life... It was cheap and I was kinda poor. It worked to fill me up...to the tune of 249 lbs! I am thankful to not have issues with my band For almost 9 years.. It scares me a bit when I read of all the complications here. I read in studies 1/2 the banders no longer have their band after 10 years. I am hopeful by keeping it a bit under inflated and not challenging it that I can go on with my healthy life????

    Nervous

I'm starting to get really nervous my sugery is this coming Monday the 26th. I'm nervous that I don't know enough or have studied enough for life after surgery (although I have read book and read posts and posts) I'm also nervous about the pain after, I have a high pain tolerance (I have read that it less painful then gallbladder removal and I had that done). I'm also extremely nervous because I am leaving my children with grandma for 10 days to have this done. My husband and I are going to TX for this. I have left. Jy children with grandma before but it was not this long. I have wrote her a 6 page book on how to take care of them and the worse part is it is my husband's mom and I so wish my mom was still alive because I would ask her in a heartbeat over MIL. (Last time she watched them she forgot to give my one son his antibiotics and he brook out in hives and had to go to the hospital, she also let them stay up late and sleep on and take naps at dinner time and the cycle went on) I think she is making me the most nervous. (I have four children ages 7, 6, and twin 4 year olds. Thanks for letting me vent I hope the nerves go down a little bit.

  10. Oh wow your four weeks out? Are you on the mushy food phase? I have been on the liquid diet for two weeks before surgery and I have been so emotionally hungry! Thanks for the kind words Yes, I'm on limited soft foods: cottage cheese, refried Beans, mushed veggies, oatmeal/cream of wheat, greek yogurt. I get to go to the next phase in 10 days. I was on a 2 week pre-packaged food diet pre-op. Don't worry, your hunger will disappear after surgery; at least, MINE did. Now I eat because I HAVE to...or because I WANT to.

    Knee pop and giving out

I have no idea what might be happening with your knee, but I do think you should go see primary care if it still feels that way after a week or 10 days. This is great advice. If you start working it too early you could hurt it further...water exercise is smart.
  13. I'm a little over 8 months out (started at BMI 36 before my VSG, having previously dieted down from BMI 46 and am now at BMI 23.8) and starting to try to taper off the weight loss. I've been eating a little more the past month, 1500 calories or so per day, and have still lost the same 3-4 pounds as the previous month. Weight loss was very rapid at the beginning and is now clearly tapering off. I've read about others continuing to lose weight even when increasing calories gradually so I was prepared for this, and still want to lose 10 pounds or so. I can't believe how well everything has gone! I'm mostly wondering about a couple of things: I do have some excess skin, how much do you suppose that weighs? I'm aiming for a BMI of about 22 but of course I have no idea what my normal weight is so I'm shooting from the hip here. Should I factor in for the excess skin and if so, how much? I don't know if anybody has that info or would hazard a guess. I'm 39 and though there is some loose skin around my lower belly I've come out surprisingly all right in that area, I think. I'm not comfortable wearing short shorts, knee-length yes, and have been seen in a skirt (with tights!) ending a couple inches above my knees. My arms have really firmed up well (I'm doing Pilates weekly) and I'm trying to get more exercise done now it's so easy to move. For anybody just considering having the surgery, I'd say definitely go for it. It has been one of the best decisions of my life. And I'm really glad I found my way to this forum: I don't post a lot but I've read a lot of the info and it has helped enormously. To each and every one of you: thank you! So now what? I go on with my life, healthier, happier and half my size six years ago. I'm still a work in progress in other ways, but I think I've got this particular problem out of the way. I'll still continue to watch what I eat, make sure I get enough Protein and weigh myself weekly, and look forward to the rest of my new, healthier life.
  14. I was sleeved 7/13/10... yes less than a month ago and I am down over 50 pounds! Today I stepped on the scale and I was less then 300 pounds for the first time in a long time! Epiphany

So I am 2 years banded and 1 year post TT. In that time I have lost 100+ pounds (idk how many inches). Gone from a 22w to an 8/10. And yet I still struggle with my body image I just don't see what others see or what the clothing size difference says. Eureka!! Today a huge lightbulb (100 watt) when on above my head. My problem is the number on the scale (isn't that what brought most of us to banding). Seriously though I mean I am relating how I think I look to that number that glows at me when I step on that scale. Has it changed - hell yes it has. 262/3 pre banding to 159 this morning. Somewhere in my brain that number tells me I am still fat! If Jennifer Anniston and Angelina Jolie are like 120 or less than I MUST still be fat. And forget when I watched Kirstie Alley on DWTS. I felt like a beast. I never wanted to be a size 2 and I still don't want that. I would look awkward especially since I am a 36dd. I know now I need to separate what I see from what Hollywood tells me. Heck Marilyn Monroe was a 12 and she was perfect!! Am I a success. Yes I am and if u are trying your best and u like u than u are too
  16. The old prescritptions were some times very effective but they took allot of the market as well as the 3 pill coctail including phentermine as a part. The latest news is that they have aproved one which also has the phentermine in it but its the first in 10 years. Over the counters have herbals now as well, they are not so good. I use a natural resource algea called spirulina which has an over powering taste and I put it in blenderized drinks. It takes some getting used to if you hadn't drank anything like it before.
  17. Breakfast: 1 fried egg with 1 slice of cheese OR 1/2-3/4 of a Chick fil A chicken biscuit lunch Usually a Campbells Soup at Hand, because I am a teacher who must eat with the students so I have maybe 10 minutes eating time (not nearly enough to eat properly); about once a week I bring a small container of leftovers to heat and eat Snack: peanut butter/choc chip chewy bar Snack: Starbucks Venti non-fat Caramel Mocha (2 pumps of mocha, 4 pumps sf caramel, no whip) Dinner- whatever is cooked, just a cup or less of it. ex: pastalaya, spaghetti, pizza (1 thin slice) chili, hamburger steak, gumbo, etc. I consistently eat 1200-1500 calories per day; I journal using fitday.com to keep track of my calories. It keeps me honest.

    Filling foods

Hi John, i'm not banded yet but am getting ever closer to the conclusion thats its the way i want to go. However, i have had a very keen interest in nutritious foods and eating for many years and thought "if no one else has written in his thread..." I would have to say firstly, that if you want to make a good investment food wise then get yourself a pressure cooker, they are superb for cooking nutritious foods (especially pulses) in half the time!!! I would say something as a filling side dish in whatever meal is a nice pulse salad. aduki, haricot and mung Beans (cooked in a pressure cooker for just 10 minutes!! with a low salt stock cube). Make yourself a dressing to pour over the top too (one part balsamic premixed with tsp of mustard to one part olive oil, spices - cumin seeds, coriander powder, ginger), perhaps some finely sliced green pepper and some goats cheese feta cubes...maybe even some finely chopped red onion?....NICE! Mix this up with some salad leaves and serve with whatever else you are having, meat? jacket potato? and you are away! But i always find a salad with pulses and beans in fills me up a treat, and thats without the band. As for fibre, may i recommend Flax tea. Simmer 1 tsp of flax seeds in 1 ltr of Water for 45 minutes (4 minutes in a pressure cooker) and dilute 1:1 with normal water once done. Can be drank hot as tea, or cold in a refill bottle. It keeps in the fridge for about 3 days. Simmering the flax seeds infuses the water with lignans, making it oily and fibrous which means that your body can absorb the water far more easily keeping it better hydrated, but also, lignans are a soluble Fiber which can absorb toxic waste in the digestive system. Fibrous and detoxifying!!! You cant go wrong!!! Hope this helps, and if nothing else, its at least popped your threads cherry! Best wishes, Dune
  19. Hi all, I'm scheduled for my endoscopy on Monday at 10:15am. I woke up today with a sore throat this morning and little bumps in the back of my mouth. I feel perfectly fine otherwise but now I'm really nervous that they will cancel my procedure. Did this happen to anyone? If so, did they still see you even though you didn't have any other symptoms? This whole process has been overwhelming for me. I found out last week that I need my gallbladder removed because of gallstones. I really can't afford a set back Thanks for listening and sharing your experience if you have one.
  20. LissyinTX

    Hi there!

Hi! My name is Lissy, and I am overweight......lol, thought I could start out funny. I am in a waiting pattern right now because I am awaiting my surgery date and am getting antsy. I am scheduled to go in on May 19th and can not wait for the day to get here faster. I have been battling the weight I put on over a 10 year period. I put most of the weight on in a 2 year period and can't get rid of it. I have tried to lose the weight naturally but can't keep it off. i recently married my second husband and he is against the surgery. He thinks that I could lose the weight if I tried. He doesn't understand the weight difficulties, but then again he is 130 lbs and is trying to gain weight. I came on here because it looks like a great site for help and support both before and after the surgery. I am hoping to get insight into what it is I am doing. Off topic, how can I get those nifty weight trackers? Thanks in advance for your thoughts, support and help.

    Too tight= no weight loss?

Wow... I was banded 10 months ago and I've lost more than twice that amount, so something is definitly wrong if you have fills. What do you eat on a daily basis? The band is not a cure all, there is some diet involved and it sounds like you're not eating the right foods... if you were, the weight would be off.
  22. Thanks Kala And well done you for taking control of your life at such a young age. I wish I'd done this 10-15 years ago - things could have worked out a lot different!

  24. I am in the same boat, I had initial consult today, and am very scared about the same thing. I have been in rehab for BED (Binge Eating Disorder). My friends from there have voiced the same concerns. I also will loose my wife if I go through with it. But if I don't go through with it, I will die in next 10 years. Classic catch 22
