Back pain while eating?
babykins529 replied to spoiltmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Could be you eating too fast, too big of bites or what you are eating or eating too much. You will have to dissect that issue. I had that happen today and I'm sure it was a combination of the above things. -
One week would certainly be better than two on liquids. My friend had to do two weeks on Slim Fast Optima, with a salad once a day, non fat dressing and veggies only in the salad. Also required to take a multivitaman. Post-op is pretty strict for three to four weeks too I think.

It could be eating too fast. You really have to take teeny bites and eat super slow. It could also be acid. Are you on a PPI like omeprazole/prilosec? Also make sure your animal proteins are really moist.

The 5:2 diet originated in the U.K. and gained popularity around 2012 following a BBC broadcast. It involves eating a normal diet five days a week and a very low calorie diet two days a week - 500 calories for gals and 600 for guys. It is often referred to as "intermittent fasting". There are virtually no long-term clinical studies that have been done regarding safety and effectiveness. This is a link to information originally published by the National Health Service in the U.K. in Jan 2013 and updated in May of 2013 - http://www.nhs.uk/news/2013/01January/Pages/Does-the-5-2-intermittent-fasting-diet-work.aspx . The bottom line appears to be that there are more questions than answers. It would likely be a very good idea to discuss it with your surgeon before adopting the diet. It may not be suitable for folks with diabetes and possibly other pre-existing conditions. What I call the "Prime Directive" of weight loss surgery is the all important lifestyle changes. I believe that to qualify as a lifestyle change, any potential course of action must meet three criteria - it must be healthy, realistic and sustainable. It's about control, not denial. Adopting a lifestyle that focuses on proper nutrition and a calorie intake appropriate for where you are at in your journey, from rapid weight loss to maintenance of your goal weight, is perhaps a healthier, more realistic and more sustainable goal than any "diet".

I hope you will read what I'm going to say, and understand that it comes from a place of love, caring, and concern (and based entirely on my impression of the comments you posted)... You have more going on, psychologically, than not losing weight "fast enough". My suggestion would be to reach out to your surgical program, and ask to speak with their therapist. If they don't have one on-staff (I'm making an assumption, based on my own experience, that they would), finding a therapist to help with your ingrained self-esteem issues might be helpful. You need to rediscover all the reasons for which you are worthy of being loved....especially by yourself. Self-love will give you the strength to face the rest of the world without feeling the need to concern yourself with the thoughts of others (even including your mother). So many of us have been taught to hate ourselves...because we were too "fat," or because of some other reason (most often imposed by those around us). The process of losing weight, and becoming healthier, ends up being about so much more than just "losing weight"!! In the end, the amount of weight you've already lost is wonderful...truly!! Don't allow those niggling voices get the better of you....don't allow them to derail the progress you've made! I wish you nothing but success, and peace of mind! Laura

I did the two week all liquid Protein diet (mostly Slim-fast drinks and Atkins Diet Drinks), two days before began the cleansing wash and Listerine mouthwash. I arrived at the hospital at 6:15 am, was taken to pre-op at 7am, and surgery by 8am. Left hospital by 11am. I actually feel decent. I've been up and about every two hours to walk around my home and do a few light activities mainly because the gas has settled under my left shoulder blade. By doing so, the gas has subsided. Important Note: I've taken my Phenergan and the Lortab elixir right on time. We'll see what tomorrow brings !?! Joanna

Wollongong or close?
shericrazylady replied to shericrazylady's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
AWSOME! I find it normal now but be careful because you will be able to eat and all of a sudden you will be full so just take your time and when I say full I mean you may throw it up that’s why I say be careful hahaha I somtimes eat to fast and find the hard way you will struggle at first with fluids etc but you will find your way as you heal because of the eating plan and stuff I eat normal foods and some things like rice bread pasta I can’t eat doesn’t agree with me and some Spicey things and I get acid reflux bad ! I didn’t have any pain only straight after surgery but wasn’t bad at all and had my drip taken out the second day just make sure you walk even if you don’t think you can you need to so you can relive the gas because you will find you might have sore shoulders etc only advice I’d say about the hospital keep the door closed because they are loud lol and I had only the curtain closed and the would swoosh in every hour even at night LOL BTW do you have Instagram? -
I know you posted this in a bypass forum and I've had the sleeve, but before surgery my doctor explained that VSG patients can have this happen sometimes too. So when it's happened to me, it really has been almost immediate. Sudden feeling of unwell, needing to go lie down, fast pulse.. Yuck

Many type II diabetics "cured" by weight loss surgery. I was pre-diabetic in Dec with fasting blood sugar 115 and A1C 6.2. After diet and losing 20 pounds in prep for surgery, no longer pre-diabetic. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

Can too much water at once hurt you?
tx girl posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
okay guys and gals...i hate to be the newbie asking so many questions but i'm not sure who else to ask about these things. I'm on the liquid stage of my post op (5 wks, but does include watered down oatmeal, beans..etc). Anyway, I was banded on the 8th of Aug. and just started feeling better yesterday. Since then I've been eating my 3 two ounce meals a day and sipping Water, but I've been starving! Tonight I just drank a bottle of water in less than an hour...will that much water that fast "stretch" or hurt things? Again, sorry for the silly questions, but thanks for the help! -
Hey janice! Blood work went fine! They took 3 tubes of blood. One to check your overall blood levels and such, one to check how fast you clot, and one for red blood cell count. :001_tongue: Oh! I thought I was just getting blood drawn, but the also did an EKG! I told the tech, "I didn't know was going to have to get topless too today!" Haha. So if you haven't had an EKG be prepared to! All in all it took a few hours bc they also got all my preamissions done for the hospital stay. As far is sugery goes, I was set for the 20th, but got a call and it was push to the 16th. At first I was super nervous, but now it's cool bc it's 4 less days I'm on the "wonderful liquid diet!" Haha Five more days I'll be sleeved!! How are you doing??!

What happens if you drink with a meal?
Jachut replied to Hope4Life's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
For me - nothing. I do it often, not all the time. I dont down a huge glass of Water but I do sip coffee (breakfast time and lunchtime) or wine (dinner time)with a meal. Doesnt make me hungry sooner, spaces out the bites and helps avoid golfballs from eating too fast etc. I was never told not to actually. Although in general its also the practice in Australia. -
First of all, you can't eat that fast after pbing. You need to do liquids for a few days, and let your self heal up. After that amount of time you can try some soft food and see what happens. You will never stop pbing if you don't give yourself time to let the swelling go down. If you can't keep the liquids down, then you definately need to get an unfill. I would probably go for the unfill regardless, you sound pretty tight to me, but only your doctor and you can make that decision. Good Luck!

Need advice/words of encouragement....
sharon2u replied to LookingForMe's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was banded a year ago this past September and I ahve done very well. However earlier in the year I had to get a bit unfilled due to a bulge that developed and then I was refilled but slowly, then in June I had the gallbladder removed and a week or so after that I had to get another unfill, yep broke my heart and I had to get a upper GI before the Dr. would fill me back up. Well he did this in July and all went well with the fill I am only at 5 cc in my 10cc band. I have not had any weightloss since May of this year and I just don't get it. I do watch what I eat and I exercise my butt off. I have weiged between 178-180 pounds for several months and this is getting old real fast and discouraging. I dropped from a size 26 to a misses size 12, yep a huge change and I need to drop another 20 pounds and I will be so happy. I still have restriction becuase I can feel it and sometimes I have to PB but not too often. I guess I need another fill but befopre doing so I want another upper GI to be sure that I am not obstrusted by another pouch, by another pouch developing on its own can cause a person not to lose weight, so I have ben told. So now what do I get a fill or try diet aides? -
Wow that's a lot of protein! For a non fast day too. I tend to eat mostly protein on fast days but haven't been so strict on feed days. I've been throwing in a lot more carbs with fruits veg and a few treats here and there..

Could you share the fast track fax number? I would like to see if they can do that, I don't think my Aetna requires the sleep study, I think it's all on the surgeon.

Scheduled for October 8 in New York City
lovekatz1975 replied to ManhBill's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi, I'm new to these boards. I'm scheduled for October 1st with Dr. Ren. I started my liquids today. I know it's only day 1 for me, but boy is this hard!! I've had 3 slim fast shakes, 1 small salad with fat free dressing, 2 cups of coffee, 1/2 of a 20 oz. diet pepsi, and 1 cup of chicken broth. I'm trying hard to be good, but I really want to eat solid food!! Good luck on your surgery!! -
You are where I was in late 2009. I researched the lap-band option for about 8 months last year. Went to 2 different lap-band presentations by 2 different doctors in 2 different cities. I did a lot of researching on the internet and found that "lapbandtalk.com" was the best source of education. On January 5th I had my day long briefing at my doctor's office and started my liquid diet for 2 weeks. I lost about 7lbs. On Janurary 18th I had my surgery and the worst thing for me was coming out of the anesthesia but this wore off pretty fast. I received lots of first class medical attention and can't say enough about the doctor, technicians, nurses, etc. I live about 100 miles from the hospital so I stayed there overnight and left early the next morning. Lot's of support from my wife (& best friend). I did "exactly" what they told me to do,i.e. what to eat, drink, etc. and stayed home from work for the entire week. When I started I weighed 250 lbs. (naked) and this moring I weighed in at 207 lbs. Thats 43 lbs. in just over 9 weeks! I take my Vitamins including B Complex, Optisource and Viactiv Calcium and I feel great! It's really all about how bad you really want to loose weight! In my case I had high blood pressure, sleep apnea and was tired all the time. Now it's all gone. No more pills and I feel great. 75% of my decision was for health reasons and 25% was for how I looked but that was me. You have to restate why "you" want to go for a lap-band and only you can make that decision. :Banane20:

1St Time Vomiting, Is This Normal?

I ate either too fast or something that didn't sit well with me. I drank some water and up it came, then up came the food. I felt a tug, has anyone else had this experience? -
How do you get calories early on?
TXGALINAR replied to jennyinky's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Only 2wks post op, you're still very swollen and the restriction is greater than when your swelling will go down. Don't concern yourself with calories right now. While losing you'll want to be between 450-850 cal/day and not really anymore than that. The first two weeks is nothing but liquids. You shouldn't worry if you can't finish you liquids all at once unless they aren't going down at all. Sip your liquids...you can't take big swigging gulps of liquids like you used to. Give yourself time...I'm 5 weeks post ok and experienced the same thing. Even still I can only drink about 1/2 skin fast protein drink when I drink one. I usually save the other half for later in the day. -
Definitely take this time to get prepared! Spend more of your time reading the post-op forum than the pre-op forum. That way, you won't be the one asking these same questions that get asked every single day here: HELP it's after surgery and I feel hungry, is that normal? HELP every time I eat my stomach roars and grumbles, is this normal? HELP I'm three weeks out from surgery and the scale hasn't moved in four days, what am I doing wrong? HELP I'm on full liquids and I can drink a protein shake really fast. Did they actually do my surgery? HAVE I STRETCHED MY SLEEVE? What should I eat on purees? When should I start exercising again? How long until I can lift my baby/toddler after surgery? When can I go back to work? If I lift weights, use expensive oils and body wraps, and gobble 1000000 mcgs of biotin every day, I will successfully avoid having any loose skin or suffering any hair loss, right? What should I take with me to the hospital? etc. Seriously, though, being nervous is completely normal and understandable -- but keep reminding yourself, complications and an early death are a lot more likely if you remain obese rather than undergo a surgery that is safer than a gallbladder removal. No surgery is risk free but obesity is a lot riskier than this surgery!

Where was that thread that dealt with the issue it was about people complaining about losing a great amount of weight fast. I think losing too fast is a recipe for disaster as the chances of regain in the future would be very high. Taking it slow adapting good eating habits and exercise are the key to long term success.

I was 236 but in that picture I really don't know how much I weight because that was like 5 months before I started going through the process of meeting the surgeon nut during the two week pre op diet lost 17 pounds . After two weeks after surgery I did get really sick with vomiting on and off the whole summer so I think that also had a lot to do with me losing so fast because I wasn't really able to eat like that ( which was the worst part of my experience ) but I was losing a lottt . Like some weeks I was losing 10 pounds in a week . But after I got better I would stall a little and then now I still continue to lose . Like since last week I've lost 8 pounds.
