    Day 7 concerns

Are you tracking your calories? At a week out, you're probably not getting much over 500 calories a day. Logic says that consuming only 500 calories a day, you're going to lose weight whether you want to or not. But, your body is freaking out, right now. It doesn't know what you've done to it. It has to adjust to its current condition and then you will start losing again. Stalls - and even slight weight gains - are a normal and expected part of the process. If you're going to weigh yourself everyday, then you need to come to terms with this fact. The scale is going to go up and down, but the overall trend will be downward. If you're making yourself crazy with it, then switch to once-a-week weigh ins.
  2. Hi all! Just needed a little encouragement. I just got denied (first time) for my VGS because I gained eight pounds during my three-month supervised weight loss. The reason I gained weight is that I was a "lightweight" at 205/5'2 and my nutritionist told me not to lose too much weight or I might be denied. Eight pounds isn't a big deal, I know, and they said I just need to come in and weigh when I have lost that. So now I think I'm going to try to practice the liquid liver-shrinking diet I'll need to do pre-surgery to drop those pounds. It's day one and only breakfast and I am starving, lol. Any tips or tricks to get yourself through the liquid diet? TIA.
  3. I dont have a murmur, but I do have a PFO, which is a hole in the heart. My cardiologist has done every test under the sun and everything is normal, however, I still have dizziness, migraines, and just fatigue. He cleared me for the surgery, but Im having more pain, than normal. They can operate and close it up. PFOs are birth defects, I lived my whole life not knowing I had this. And it could contribute to weight gain due to poor circulation. I think that you should be ok. With murmurs, I dont think that they can go in and patch it up like they can a PFO. But, do more research on murmurs, see what you can find. Good luck.

    Hello Everyone

I had this issue when I'deat things I wasn't supposed to eat and with a 40 pound weight gain that's probably your issue as well. The best solution is to change your eating habits back to day 1 if you can and go from there. If you never got in to exercise or physically unable tt hat would also help. Good luck.

  6. In summary from reading these and other articles (my conclusion—please draw your own, I am not an expert and still awaiting to be sleeved!). I am having a bit of pre-surgery jitters, so re-researching to be clear I am making the right choice for me, for the right reasons and my expectations of self and surgery are realistic. The long term percentage rate of dieters regaining most or all weight back does seem to be much higher (up to 95%) than those that actually have bariatric surgery . HOWEVER, WITH THAT SAID, SOME STUDIES SAY UP TO 5% OF BARIATRIC PATIENTS GAIN IT ALL BACK. 2-3 years after surgery 80% of patients regain 5-10 pounds and approximately another 20% keep creeping up (unclear how much and if you look at other stats it appears most of them most get a handle on it). I am having pre-surgery (April 10, 2012) jitters and was having moments of wanting to back out but the stats seem to favor using the tool of surgery, but it is obvious bariatric surgery is no magic wand and one still has to ; PORTION CONTROL (YOU WILL EVENTUALLY BE ABLE TO EAT ENOUGH TO REGAIN WEIGHT—IF NOT CAREFUL!) let's get to know each other

Hi Everyone! I am a 35 years old. I've been married for 3 years and together with my DH for 12 years total. I was a marketing exec for a bunch of large Fortune 500 companies up until the end of October (60 hour work weeks, traveling, drinking too much, eating way too much, etc.). I am taking 6 months to take care of myself. The most important is my new band! I have struggled with weight gain since about age 23. It just creeped up every year until I am where I am today - 98 lbs of fat, sleep apnea, difficulty breathing, cholesteral creeping up, blood pressure creeping up, etc., etc. I finally gave in to my need for this change when I call home and my mom has had 2 mini strokes, a heart attack, diabetes all before the age of 60. I don't want to die young and/or be disabled by health problems before I can even collect my SS checks:-) I stuggle because my DH is handicapped and this has really prevented me from being the active person I used to be. As part of my 6 months of time off, I need to get adjusted to eating healthy with the help of my band and finding a way to exercise properly. The Merry Losers Rock!!!

Weight loss surgeries of the future?

I've been banded almost 4 years now. Like you, I've never really assumed this will be a lifetime thing, I really hope to get 10 years out of it, if nothing better's out there and my band wears out, I wouldnt hesitate to get another. I'm intrigued by the sleeve and I do believe for a lot of people its a better surgery but I dont think I'd swap over, I think I'd get another band. If I were so lucky as to get 20 years out of it, I dont know what I'd do then, whether I'd have any other WLS at all. I really think the longer this goes on, my habits are becoming more and more consolidated. I dont want to be so arrogant as to say that I could have done this without the band, but I am now maintaining my weight on about 1800 to 2000 calories a day which is quite a reasonable amount of food (I have to work REALLY hard to get it all in, but I need it) and I will never give up running, I love it. So I lost 120% of my excess weight and whilst I'm sure I'd have rebound weight gain if I lost my band in even 10 years, I dont think I'd really shoot up to my previous high, which was heavily influenced by being a stay at home mother of young children, something which no longer applies to me. Not sure there. But I do think somewhere in the future they'll work out how to control our appetites, not restrict our stomachs! i dont need an emergency fund, in Australia, if my band slips, wears out, or I just want it out, its pretty much free. Our health insurance covers it, no arguments, no pissfarting around. Its paid for. I paid a once only $3000 fee and I will never pay for any service from my surgeon out of my own pocket again. He bulk bulls everything, so its billed straight to our public health system and my private health will always pay for ANY hospital stay costs.
  9. Nance not to be too personal but the protein drinks can be very constipating which can cause weight gain. My doc cut me down to 40 grams of protein a day because of that problem. Good Luck!!!!!!!

Why am I a Slowwwwwwwww loser?

I just want to thank NGM for starting this thread, being a S-L-O-W loser can be very frustrating. It took me ten days post up just to lose my weight gain from surgery. The irony of going through the surgery and my weight being up was heartbreaking. But now the scale is starting to move and I know I've done the right thing for myself. This a life changing decision and its not so important to get there first but to get there and stay there. God bless you all and it is nice to know that I'm not alone and sharing my struggle with all of you.

    No help for the wicked

Time to bump this. Wow, so much has changed since I originally started this thread. It was 3 months before I was banded, and I was really struggling with my asthma. I mean, really struggling. Death looked like a real possibility. I really thought that by now I would have lost if not all my excess weight, I would have lost a big whack of it. I was sure that I would be a size 16 by now, not still 22/24. But that is not in the cards for me. I still struggle with this. But I suppose I should have clued into the "sudden weight gain" since no one else seems to experience that particular "joy." I've since learned that it's one of the hallmarks of Cushing's, and I've had to come to terms with learning that my journy is not the typical journy. Someone on a recent thread was commenting on how pissed they were because someone told them that by having WLS they were not doing it "right" that they were not doing it the old fashioned way. That somehow having the band was cheating and so any loss woul be less valuable. I personally think that WLS is the easy way, because it makes it makes it possible for so many people to actually lose weight and keep it off for possibly the first time in their entire lives. I have absolutely no problem with this being the easy way, becaus I have no need for people to suffer. I see little value in adding suffering and grief to life. It's hard enough without looking for extra hardness to add.

    Smokers Question....

Dont smoke. My experience.I started at 4 months post op.Without food life felt boring.Needed something I could do and started smoking again. At 5 months I had an ulcer.I stop till my stomach felt better then start again, stop and start...Then we found my vit C and vit A is now super low.Dr. says might just be the combination of the surgery with the smoking but my vits are affected by the smoking. OK I got it.I stopped last week and boy is it difficult to not gain weight now. Point is 1.for some of us our stomachs just dont like the smoking anymore. 2.You will just have to stop at some point anyway and stop smoking usually goes with weight gain because smoking does increase metabolic rate and we tend to eat more to satisfy the oral issues when we quit. While you are not smoking,DONT DO THIS TO YOURSELF.Its harder to stop post surgery than before.

  15. Hi all. I'm currently on month 3 of my pre-op process. I have to be weight monthly to show the insurance company 6 months of weights (I have emblem HIP prime) my first weigh in I was 276, 2nd weigh in I was 281 and not somehow I've sky rocketed to 289. The surgeons office initially told me not to gain or lose more than about 7 pounds. I have basically almost doubled that. Has anyone been denied for weight gain during the 6 month process? I don't want to weigh in at 289 for august so I'm going to try and drop some weight but I don't think I'll be able to drop 8 pounds with only one week left in august. I started birth control again after 8 months of not being on it and I feel like that has something to do with the weight gain. Help!!!! I do not want to be denied I'm so stressed out about this.

To Band or Not to Band. Help

Well, I started out at 284 pounds/BMI of 42.2, so I know about not doing much. However, I'm down 80 pounds and am looking at running as the next step in my exercise program. Me. Run? WTF? I now walk with running intervals and continue to increase that. I'll be 59 in two weeks and while training for a triathalon isn't totally out of the question, I think probably not....but I continue to increase my duration for exercise and what I can actually do comfortably so I can only say it is what you set out for yourself to do...and what you work to achieve. The band has given me something very precious. I've made it through the holidays without a significant weight gain FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE and in the past that would always throw me off and I'd start regaining lost weight.

Going Down Down Down Down Down

Wow! I've never lost weight like this in my entire life. I stepped into my spinal specialists office March 1 and he put me on steroids for my excruiating back and hip pain and told me to stop working out. So paranoid me starts drinking lemon water because I knew it would flush out excess fluids and in my mind counteract the weight gain affects of steroids. I went back to my Dr. yesterday to get a steroid shot in my back. He said my face looked alot more relaxed, but I still had pain. Nothing like it was the week before but still a problem. Not sure I will ever be back to normal but I am feeling alot better. I've been trying not to jump on the scale every day but that hasn't happened because I am steadily losing a pound a day now! It's like it is just melting off my body. My doctor told me it is because of the pain I was in that held on to the weight, now that I am feeling better, my body is letting it go. I believe maybe part of that is true, but not to the extent of losing 7 lbs in 10 days! So as long as I'm on the these steroids and still losing weight, and even when I get off the steroids, I am still drinking lemon water. I've read about it online and it states that it cleanses the body of toxins and flushes them out. I believe it, I am feeling soooooo much better too. And I am only 3.5 lbs away from passing the dreaded 200 lbs mark! That day will be a celebration and you will hear from me on that day for sure!!!!! :tt1:

    Pregnant

Hello. I got pregnant after having the band for one year. I never had to have my fluid removed. This was based on careful watch of my and the baby's weight gain. As long as the OB-GYN is informed they will monitor your and your baby's weight gain. If insufficient, they may ask that the fluid be taken out (at least in part) to allow for better nutrition. Also, other considerations..if you end up being one of those mom's that vomit excessively, you may want to have all the fluid taken out as a precaution. Not for baby, but to prevent slips etc. Also, be realistic about your nutrition. If you find yourself not eating, not eating balanced and you know this may pose a risk...time for an unfill to allow for greater variety or portions. Hormones can be tricky on the band (for instance some woman find their bands tighter during their PM). If you find your band being more restrictive than normal, have a partial unfill to accomodate. Be in constant and honest communication with your ob-gyn to ensure that you and your baby stay healthy during your pregnancy. Congrats!
  19. @@doingitmyway I lost 64 Ib (29 kg). Probably would have lost bit more, but I was bit slack with my exercises lately. I gained 90 Ib (41 kg) in 2 years 2014-2016 partly due to my Graves Disease (hyper-thyroid) doing 180 degree turn, and mucking up my metabolism. I developed awful sweet and fatty foods cravings, so I had a massive, rapid weight gain. I would love to lose another 33 Ib. My weight loss has slowed down a bit when I hit 6 months post op. So, I am plodding along .....

    6 Months Surgiversary !

Congrats, you look awesome I can totally identify with how weight gain can change your facial features. At 274 # I had a double, no make that triple chins with full hanging cheeks and my eyes were just slits, I avoided pictures like the plague. I feel and have been told I look a lot younger with my weight loss but I'm still a work in progress. Thanks for sharing Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  21. HI I was banded on the 10th sept and the same thing happened to me! Surgery now a week gone and I have lost the weight gained and another half stone (over past 3 days) so dnot be disheartened Maxine
  22. It depends. Are you going to let the numbers on the scale dictate how the rest of your day goes? Are you going to be able to deal with stalls and even weight gain if you weigh daily? If you think that's not going to bother you, by all means weigh daily. If it is a problem for you, stay off the scale and weigh weekly, bi monthly or even monthly if you feel that will work best for you. I weigh once a week, Monday morning no fail. Even weekly still can be annoying when you're in a longer stall

    How To Reduce Breast Size

I had a reduction a few years ago. Don't regret it for a second and even with the weight gain- the girls still stand at attention. I hope to lose some and am confident they won't totally go away. Yey girls!
  24. Hi, Jane. I wish you luck on your decision as it is a very personal decision you have to make. I don't know if this will help at all with your decision, but if you'll bear with me, I like to share my story thus far and pre-band. Since I was about 15, I've progessed from chubby, to overweight to heavy, to morbidly obese. Like all of us here on this forum, I've lost weight, gained more weight, cried over my weight and most recently I just simply gave up. I'm 46 years old and at my highest weight 330 lbs! I have hypertension, pre-diabetic, my back hurts after standing or walking for more than 5 minutes, and I'm pulling away from all of my friends and family. I wasn't even trying any more, I lost hope and I've always been an optimist... I've been researching lapband for almost 5 years. It sounded to good to be true, so I never fully beleived it. I considered bypass surgery for a very little while and even went to a seminar that discussed both bypass and lapband. At this particular seminar, they were pushing the bypass as the surgeon has been performing bypass surgery for over 20 years. He felt that lapband was too new and the weight loss was slow. So, he essentially poo poo'd the entire idea. I left the seminar very discouraged and I knew that I would never be able to choose the bypass, it scared me more than being fat. Still I kept researching the lapband, it seemed to make sense to me, but I was still feeling a little lost and hopeless. Recently I had a realization that I want to live and I want to live healthy (physically and mentally). However, I still know that no matter how determined I might feel, I know that am human and the amount of weight I need to loose is just too overwhelming. I can't do this alone or without an aide. I went to another seminar that focused on the lapband procedure. While this surgeon was pro lapband he also discussed the other weight los procedures and noted that, in his opinion, any weight loss surgery, even bypass and it's associated complications and risks, was still a better risk than being obese and suffering from comorbidities. For me the answer was clear. I have no doubt that I need to change my life, but I also need the tool to help me loose the weight and more importanly, keep the weight off. The bypass was still too radical for me and too scary, so I am choosing the lapband. I've begun the process and just awaiting some final medical test results and hope to be banded in the next month or so. I know this won't be an easy journey. I will have to make huge adjustments in my life and I will still have to deal with my emotional eating. The weight may not come off as fast, but slow and steady wins the race. Mostly, I know that I will have to work "with" the lapband and not "against" it. It's a wonderful option and if you are honest with yourself and do what your physician tells you, it works and with less risks than the bypass. I'm full of hope and optimism yet again. :wink2: Again, I wish you luck. And as others have said here, read and research both procedures and maybe even make a list of pros and cons for both procedures...
  25. You really have to do what you think is right for you. I know my weight issues started in my early 20's, when I got married and stop being active and that roller coaster ride with the weight is awful. I am "slightly older" than you :-), but serioulsy I felt the same way just so drained from my weight being a constant issue on my mind every single day. I did this too be healthy now, wish they would have had it when I was younger because I missed a lot of years just living, because of my weight. In your heart and head you know what is going to make you happy. It is a risk, life is full of them. I pray and leave it God's hands, but I wanted off the roller coaster of weight gain. Good luck I hope everything works out. My BMI was 34 and it was way lower post baby, but I gained the weight back and didn't want to start that all over again.
