  1. If you hate protein shakes like me, I suggest the fairlife protein shakes. They just taste like milk and nothing else. You'd need to get core power elite protein (42 grams), fairlife nutritional plan (30 grams) or the fairlife core regular (26 grams) they are all low sugar. The best bariatric macro friendly fairlife in my opinion is the fairlife nutritional plan shakes. They are lowest calorie for the most protein. I also love the Gatorade zero water enhancers. It's the glacier flavor. I add it to about 20 oz of water and add a lot of ice. Tastes like refreshing blue lemonade. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

  3. You have been dumping this whole time! Every time you have to lay down after you eat it is because you are dumping. Have you tried eating high protein, veggies & fruit (natural sugar)? I would stick with a bariatric eating protocol instead of filling your body with sugar & crap.
  4. I haven't had a revision to ESG but did have an original ESG (I now have a VSG). My personal opinon: I would think a bypass would have better longevity and outcome. https://bmiclinic.com.au/endoscopic-sleeve-gastroplasty-faq/ ESG following gastric sleeve: Endoscopic revision of a gastric sleeve is possible, however the weight loss that results is only approximately 10% of the baseline weight. There are likely more effective options which you can talk through with your Bariatric Specialist.

    September surgery buddies!!

Tomorrow's the big day for me! I can't believe it's finally here after trying to get to this point for almost 3 years now. I had a big scare this week just to make my nerves even worse: My wife got exposed on Tuesday to a coworker that tested positive for COVID. We had to wait to Saturday for her to get tested, and I got tested yesterday (it was the last required hurdle from my bariatric team). Thankfully we both turned up negative. I was seriously worried I'd be delayed. Especially after basically completing the 2 week pre-op liquid diet, it would have really been a letdown if I'd had to put surgery off even longer.
  6. My BMI is 33.5 with diabetes (controlled), slight sleep apnea and a big family history of heart disease. I'm definitely having sleeve surgery (Oct 26th) to be proactive at this point. My doctor didn't even blink at my BMI with my co-morbidity, and even mentioned that the Bariatric Society or team of directors and doctor and seriously considering lowering the approved BMI to be 30 or above with co-morbidity. My doctor said my diabetes would completely reverse itself after surgery (again, I am on the lower side being diabetic with an A1C of 5.9) I am self-pay, however, and did not have to worry about insurance approval. BEST OF LUCK!
  7. You'll need to check your insurance. I believe most of those that cover bariatric surgery cover it for a BMI over 40, or over 35 with comorbidities. Don't think I've hear of any that cover it at 30?

First Week Post Op Nerves Are Shot

I was going to comment about not being able to absorb more than 25 - 35 grams of protein at one time, but catwoman beat me to it. I would say the best thing now is for you to rest a lot so you can heal. Try to ease your anxiety and just relax and allow your body to heal. Walk when you can, inside and/or outside, but also rest and just track your protein and water. The first two weeks, I drove to a lot of places and just walked. Like Costco, the mall, etc. I live in an extremely hot environment and sweating when I'm trying to get every drop of fluid in is counterproductive, imo. Then after two weeks I went back to the gym for cardio only, then at six weeks I was okayed for resistance training. I recovered alone. I did fine. Family would stop by or come help when I asked them to, but they didn't hover at all. I used a binder for about ten days to minimize discomfort when I got up, walked or slept. Learn the log roll technique to help get out of bed, so you don't need assistance. If your family is driving you crazy, send them home. You need a calm environment to recover in. Call them for help if you do need them but let them know when you want to be alone again. Just follow your teams recommendations and take your families advice with a grain of salt. Your team specializes in bariatrics for good reason. As you said, your family have never been obese, or had bariatric surgery, so what do they know? :x
  9. Hey everyone! So, I got sleeved on 09/13/2022! I usually bounce back quickly from anything, however I am so nervous something will go wrong or that I am doing something wrong! So, if anyone could help me with some of these questions it would help ease my mind some what… On the left side, where they pull the stomach through is it normal to feel a little hard, very very sore and a little bulge? If so, how long does this tend to last? I have had this since the day of surgery. Was anyone else sore just getting out of the bed? Did it feel like you would pull something doing so?! Did anyone else resume Vyvanse days after surgery? It seems to me that most people returned to normalcy immediately and that is not exactly happening to me. If you use shakes like Atkins, Ensure Max, Premier Protein can you mix them with a whey protein powder to get you closer to recommended amount of protein per day? Are sugar free popsicles the easiest way to stay hydrated? How many are ok in a day? Can I do low impact indoor cycling at a slow pace? Did you start walking for at least 30 mins immediately upon discharge home? And how long did you let your family stay after? While they are a HUGE help and I truly appreciate that I have each one of them…They are driving me literally nuts with what I shouldn’t do. (I shouldn’t do anything except stay in my bed and go to the bathroom.) (My mom thinks I shouldn’t even go outside to walk🤦🏾‍♀️) because I could get sick from being open and having a major surgery. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Not one of them have ever been overweight or had any bariatric surgery! They all smoke which is their choice I did too previously, but I don’t allow it my apartment, so they are in and out every 10-15 mins, especially on the nights they drink wine 😡… My sister is also here with her out of control, talking back to her seven year old😤. Any pointers or helpful thoughts are welcomed!!! SW219 CW206.7 GS09.13.22
  10. A DS is the Duodenal Switch. This is the surgery they do as the second stage of a sleeve or can be done by itself. Research has shown it to have the most weight loss of bariatric surgeries and usually the least regain. I hope this helps

    Gall Bladder problems After VSG?

My bariatric surg was 8/8/22 5’6 highest weight after 4 kids (2,4,7,9) and a challenging relationship with their dad for 14 years. Down maybe 30lbs by now. When I was told on 9/12 I had a 26lb weight loss and told my GB had a stone so 10/3 is my surgery. It came to surface bc my pcp needed a f/up mri from a pancreatic cyst and Found excess Fluid in my stomachs. my surgeon said normal but not my gallbladder even the cyst is normal. Worse part is my mother and auntie both very judge mental and critical told me to pray. My mom said “People Get addicted to Surgery, not bc you feel better Eventually but bc the anesthesia😳😒) this being a Med necessity! But I’m so tired of the non support I’d honestly threw in the towel recently.

    October 2022 surgery support

The other I forget to mention is I use diet ocean spray, and I mix it with vital protein powder. This helps with hunger and feeling full. I will also use fiber mix from Bariatric Advantage, haven’t tried any other brand. The fiber I mix with water and drink it fast cause it doesn’t dissolve. I also make to take gasx and I take a dose of miralax everyday to avoid gas and constipation.

    complications

Had endoscopy before my symptoms got worst. I don't have infection, no fever, last blood work a month ago white blood cells not elevated. Saw bariatric surgent recommended scan of stomach & chest. That is where I'm at now. I appreciate the feedback. When you are experiencing serious chronic pain suddenly, I want to get to root of the problem and not mask it with PT, or pain meds. So I'm doing all I can think of on my part to find out what is going on. So, again thank you for your feedback its very much appreciated.

    Celebrations after Surgery

Only my kids, husband and two friends know I’ve had bariatric surgery. Everyone else knows that I have had hernia surgery and if anyone asks about my food or weightloss I tell them I’m working with a nutritionist. Most people don’t ask beyond that - but of course sometimes closer family does (my siblings). I explained to them I was having issues with my liver being enlarged so to try to address that I’m making some changes and working with a nutrition. All of those details are true, I just haven’t shared the surgery with anyone that doesn’t have a need to know. So far there has been no issue or questions. I can address most things through either the hernia surgery or nutritionist. I imagine as I loose more and it becomes more noticeable I will hear “what’s your secrete” but again - I’ll tell the truth …. But maybe not the whole truth (depends on who’s asking and what their motives are).

    insurance frustration

Why was paperwork submitted to insurance that doesn't cover bariatric surgery? I have two insurances as well. Primary covers bariatric surgery but secondary doesn't. My doctor's office said that they won't even submit bariatric procedure to secondary, only procedures and office visits that can fall under other parameters.

    insurance frustration

Oh yes but not via insurance. I had to pay for my surgery in a private hospital as everywhere in the UK was swamped with Covid cases and all surgeries were put back and non essential surgery was stopped altogether. The hospital had its bariatric services audited and the surgeon then had a holiday which all put my surgery back at least 2 months. For a few weeks I felt like I was unjustly punished, the ' why me ' syndrome kicked in. I was so upset. Then I got over it, what else can you do ? The days dragged by and then I was into the 3 week pre op diet so they dragged even more but I got there in the end. If your part of the world is into winter when you have the surgery, be ready, You may feel really cold, I did. Even in the house I needed lots of layers. I hope you get it sorted soon
  17. Sorry I don’t live in the Austin area. I’m in Houston. I traveled to Austin for my PS. My bariatric surgeon was Khoi Du. He is AWESOME!!!
  18. Hi! I just moved to Austin are and had bypass surgery 3 years ago. I went from 300 to 168 - best decision ever! I am looking for a bariatric center in Austin area for my yearly check up -is there one you recommend? Thanks:)

    BCBS FL school district.

If bariatric surgery is specifically excluded in the insurance plan then there really is no way. I have Florida blue and its specifically excluded here in Florida. I ended up paying cash

    BCBS FL school district.

I have heard that it is difficult to say the least if there is an exclusion to the policy.. most people self pay in that case.. (and fyi school employees in Georgia have bariatric surgery covered now.. I have GA teachers insurance via my husband who is a district employee)

    CrossFit and carbs?

I was going to reply, but @Nepenthe44 hit all the points I intended to mention. For the record, I'm not carb averse, it's just that carbs do nothing to help avoid excess muscle catabolism. Sufficient protein is what you need to help keep you from losing too much muscle mass. That's one of the primary reasons all post bariatric surgery diets emphasize a protein forward approach.

    BED and psych clearance

i have BED but made big strides before the bariatric surgery process started and eve tho I am still in a new reality my psych eval wasn’t too concerned. I strongly suggest no matter what you look into why you binge with a therapist or in another therapeutic manner BEFORE surgery. I had circumstances come together which made me able to face my demons and am now better for it. BED goes so far beyond food. Food is only a symptom, not the real problem. feel free to reach out anytime in PM or on here (anyone/everyone) anytime!
  23. sigh.. I should not complain, but yep I am… I am in limbo and cannot get a date for surgery yet because I have two insurances; one that does not cover bariatric a at all and one that does. I just had to get my denial letter to the surgeon because they can’t seem to get a copy. Now it’s time to wait for approval in round two (the one with coverage). My surgeon had October 5/6 as surgery in the first request but with the (what should have been expected) delay it could be the end of october or november … It just is less than ideal timing for my work and everything else (tho being on alternative diet for holidays doesn’t bother me so far, because i will eat different no matter what happens). Maybe I am just being impatient and standing under a little black rain cloud of my own making … but the frustration is real to me! anyone else experienced similar?

    Vitamin Help

First " vehemently" word of the day! I had to look it up, so I learned a new word today. Thanks! Second: I couldn't stand the chewable in any form. Luckily my team approved me for capsules very early on. I take these and so far so good with blood work. Much cheaper than bariatric fusion too. Amazon, $30 for 3 months worth.

    Vitamin Help

+1 on this. My team is also vehemently against patches. I started taking the Bariatric Fusion one-a-day capsules and tolerate them well, but always looking for more options.
