I am 68 and had the R&Y on Feb. 15. I came through surgery fine. Don't listen to your friends. If you haven't lost the weight by now, you probably never will, that was the conclusion I came to. In the end your health will improve. I'm less than 2 months from surgery and I've already dropped one and a half BP medications. The surgery isn't all roses. Foods you enjoyed before will likely become disgusting to you. This is a side effect that occurs in a very high percentage of patients of R&Y. It's usually not a longterm problem. My friend had it and his tastes returned in about 8 months. The good thing is, you're having this surgery to lose weight and if you have an aversion to most foods, that will only help you lose more. I pretty much live on smoked salmon, Starkist tuna packets, protein bars and Genepro protein powder. I mix the Genepro with diluted fruit juice. Trust me, the protein shakes you drink before surgery will not taste the same. I can't stand them now but the Genepro is tasteless. I'll eat a few crackers at times. I am at about where I'm supposed to be. I've lost 70 lbs so far. Be sure your surgeon prescribes medication to avoid gall stones. Rapid weight loss can cause them. Also, eat nuts sparingly while drinking lots of water. Lots of nuts and low water intake can cause kidney stones. You'll do fine. You're not old. I'm old!

Gained 2 pounds!
Sherrie Scharbrough replied to pherrera92's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Well said PAstudent!! I wonder if your Surgeon or Nutronist has given you any guidelines? It is a work in progress, you HAVE too do the work. If you want to be successful track your food. Did your Dr say you can eat solid foods? Yu are just 1 month out, I had the RNY and I had to do Protein Drinks for 4 weeks after surgery. Then I went to soft blended foods. But to tell you the truth I was to scared to eat at all. I still use my GENEPRO protein with my espresso everyday to help me get my protein in. Hon, protein helps ud heal. Please work on getting the amount that you were told to do, also drink lots of fluids because with surgery our pouches can't hold much at a time and you don't want to become dehydrated. That is a whole another dilemma. Take care and keep us posted. If I can help in anyy way just ask. -
Stuggling with clear liquid phase

If you could have skim milk could you not have Premier Protein? It is about the same consistency and has much more Protein than milk. Oh, yes I could. I was just struggling with the taste at the time and opted to get my protein through small amounts of Isopure and GENEPRO in broth. -

Oddball here - dislike Premiere - Thoughts?
doxaholic replied to tinytummy17's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Thats where i currently find myself post surgery trying different shakes and not having a lot of luck. I have tried gnc unflavored not bad but i keep getting a severe aftertaste. Tried premier mix it is okay but not for everyday the already mixed were too chalky and thick. The one i really liked was genepro but that one has alot of controversey behind it and i am not sure i want to bet my health on it. So ultimately it is syntrax tried alot flavors and found some that are tolerable. Plus they have lots of flavors that i can interchange through the week. I actually liked the grapefruit and road side lemonade the best but there was nothing wrong with the other flavors either. As for unflavored fixing to try the unjury medical grade hmm we shall see. I use GENEPRO and mix it with Crystal Light. It can be mixed with hot or cold. It is oderless and flavorless. It has 30 grams of Protein. I keep a big cup of it at my desk......I get in my protein and Water at the same time.

@TEXASLADY52 I also use the GENEPRO and have since day one. I use it in my 32oz of decaf tea every morning to give me a jumpstart for the day for my Protein intake and liquid. I have no problems getting all my protein or liquid in, but these drinks just give me a yummy alternative to just decaf tea and Water. I cannot do the crystal light or liquid enhancers, I cannot stand the aftertaste and how I feel even after 1 sip. @Kindle I didn't see the caffeine in them, but that doesn't bother me at all. I drink the decaf tea now because my surgeon said it was better for me. I am just so excited to have other options that are not full of calories and sugar!!

Favorite Flavorless Protein Powder?
Slimming Down Steve replied to PlanetHopper's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would say your pretty safe there. I actually have a 60 servings bag of it and, I'm planning on using it with my decaffeinated coffee and coffee mate sugar fee fat free creamer ( it's great). I tried it about a month ago when I received the Genepro. Found out about the lawsuit after purchasing. Will say one thing good. Works well in my coffee. Wife even likes it. Hope this helps you. -
Favorite Flavorless Protein Powder?
catchthewind replied to PlanetHopper's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I like Genepro. It has no taste and practically no texture. I'm going to stick with it. Given the law suit about protein content, I'm figuring about 15 gm per scoop rather than 30 until I hear otherwise. Sent from my SM-T820 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Very good article on Protein Synthesis
SOON_TO_BE_THIN replied to BigViffer's topic in The Guys’ Room
Interesting. I'm only on VSG day 5 so I'm still studying and learning. But read 2 things I want to look up more on... 1) they indicated with age Protein needs go up. I would have assumed opposite if I hadn't read that. Calorie needs decrease as we age...so can't wait to find more about that. 2) surprised they only recommend the cheap $10/pound protein. You can't get protein without calories.....So I just ordered GENEPRO which was forty per pound instead of ten but the calorie count was half of the Isopure unflavored powder. 50 cal per "teaspoon" w/30 grams p. --vs-- 100 cal per "scoop" w/ 25 grams P. Anyone have inside or opinion on these? Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
Genepro is all I use. I cant take the other shakes they make me want to gag. Im not sure how you mix it with coffee though as I no longer drink it since surgery. I mix mine with crystal light every morning when I wake up.

FOOD IDEASFOR PUREED PERIOD
amylynns replied to DoraP's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was getting tired of eggs for Breakfast, so I did the smoothie the last couple mornings. I know we're not supposed to "drink" our meals as a rule, but I figured during pureed stage it's alright. I used one container of Danon Light Yogurt, then about 4-6 oz of OJ, a couple frozen strawberries and 1 scoop of my GENEPRO unflavored Protein mix. Total calories 268, total protein 44g. That'll keep me full for a while! I sipped on it for over an hour. -
Opinions in Genepro protein powder?
Thinkingthinner1109 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have seen that others have mentioned it on here, it says there is 30 grams of protein in a tablespoon instead of a huge scoop and it mixes well in hot water and has no taste. 0 sugar and 1 carb. -
I agree with Mr. Alley Gator. I plan the protein (for me) and then add veggies and starch for my son. So, a typical dinner might be chicken cacciatore and I just eat the chicken and some mushrooms, but I make fettucine for my son. Or a grilled top sirloin with asparagus plus a baked potato for him. I'm happy, he's happy...done! Of course, I'm 5 months out, during the first few months I purchased a lot of frozen meals from Trader Joe's to allow him to eat when I wasn't eating much, without me cooking and cleaning! For me, I would purchase some thick cut turkey and ham from the deli and weigh out two ounces and eat that with an ounce of yummy cheese (usually spoked gouda or havarti). I also use Pinterest for ideas and Myfitnesspal to calculate the recipes (frequently adjusted to add more protein, through Genepro powder or doubling the actual protein) and track my meals. That being said, I would love a good meal planner! So if anyone knows of one, I'm interested!

Genepro protein powder. It’s a tablespoon of powder for 30 grams of protein! I mix it into pudding, sugar free hot chocolate, water, crystal light, oatmeal. It’s unflavored. Works great! I got it on Amazon

Trying out Genepro- 9 days post op DS
Danny Paul replied to Glamgirl's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I inquired about Genepro on the boards and a poster (big viffer) gave valuable info on it . Unfortunately I dont know how to paste it here but basically Genepro cannot deliver 30grams of protein as advertised I also believe they have legal problems based on thier claims. As postop says concentrate on liquids at this point. Not doing what's popular just doing what's Right. -
Starting Pureed Stage on Monday. Ideas?
Stella84 replied to heatherdw's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Mushies get pretty boring so I made tuna with dill and Buffalo chicken (canned chicken). For veg I made sweet potato, spinach artichoke dip, beans and salsa all with added genepro. Then I portioned everything into 2 ounce containers to make sure not to overeat. Hope this helps! -

Why are all "diet" supplements marketed like candy?
Bufflehead replied to Didjit's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
@@ShelterDog64 I've got absolutely nothing against people using Genepro when it works for them. To be honest, I think that many people tend to over-consume protein post-op, so if Genepro is less protein than it says it is, maybe that is a good thing! Even if it was tested and turned out to be like those herbal supplements that claimed to be ginseng and were actually just ground up houseplants, if people are using it, they are losing weight, and their bloodwork is good, I see no harm in it at all. -
