  1. I hope you are allowed more than just protein shakes and yogurt! For my 14 day diet, I am allowed reduced fat strained cream soups, sugar free jello and puddings, skim milk, and broth. I have broken it up into 4 meals, 200 cal or less. I usually get 80+ grams of protein in that way. I use the isopure non-flavored protein powder and add it to 1 serving of strained soup or broth. That is very satisfying. In the morning, I add the powder to a cup of fat free fairlife milk, and then I sprinkle in some sugar free jello pudding powder--very few calories, but a nice flavor without the cloying sweet. I basically add protein to 3 of the 4 meals, and the last is just broth. Don't forget fluids! I drink water constantly. I find that having specific times that I eat helps. (6:30, 10:30, 2:30, and 6:30). These are actually the same times that I would normally eat before the pre-op diet--so it was an easy transition. If I get a little hungry, I might have a meal a little earlier, but then I find I'm not as hungry for the next meal. Either way, I can always ask myself, "Can I go another hour?" Finally, I would wait. You are only trying to shrink your liver for surgery. Instead of trying to master the diet, just make healthy changes (if you haven't already) and maybe have one shake a day, just to get used to them. Once you hit those days where you HAVE to do it, you will probably find it easier to stick to it. You will find that you may have more energy and you may start to feel better. I found that I had headaches the first two or three days, in the afternoon. Sometimes I get hungry, but by the time I have had my 4th meal, I'm not. I have also started taking Miralax everyday so that I poop regularly. I didn't start that until day 4 or 5 though. Hoping the best for you!
  2. Hi all! I had my final consult with the surgeon last week and paperwork has been submitted for insurance approval! I am hoping to schedule surgery for sometime in July, if all goes well. My surgeon requires a 14 day liquid only protein diet prior to surgery (3 protein shakes and 1 small yogurt per day). In an attempt to 'practice' and get a sense for what this will be like, I have tried to follow this diet a few times. And by late afternoon each time, I cave and eat something. I don't know how I will be able to do this for 2 weeks! I am fully invested in this process and committed to this new lifestyle but really find it hard to do only liquids. Any suggestions? Tips? Greatly appreciated

    Maintenance meal ideas?

What about adding in some "whole grains" like brown/wild rice, quinoa, sweet potatoes, etc? Or fruits and vegetables, once you've eaten enough protein. I haven't had surgery yet, so I'm eating about 1400 calories a day. I usually have a protein shake or steel cut oats with protein powder for break fast, and for lunch I might have tuna fish with light miracle whip and whole grain rice cakes with a red bell pepper or dinner leftovers. For dinner I might have meatballs in red curry, or turkey chili with beans topped with shredded cheese and fat free greek yogurt, or chicken curry, or deli turkey and cheese in a low-carb wrap sauteed in non-stick spray. If I really want dessert I'll have a ten gram square of chocolate or a half cup of light ice cream. For a snack I might have a cheese stick or a banana or pistachios. I also roast a lot of vegetables to eat with my meals and as snacks.

Hey, I was able to find the yogurt. I like it better than Oikos. It's less sour and creamier.

    NSV of sorts

This morning our parent association put out a beautiful spread for us for teacher appreciation week. They always do such a great job and they had juice, coffee, tons of great pastries and breakfast items - in the past I would had probably taken a few donuts or crumb cakes and maybe even later gone back for more. Today (5 weeks post op) I looked at it all, enjoyed just the fact that they brought it for us, thanked them, and took a small cup of decaf coffee and an activia yogurt. I only had a few sips of coffee and half of the yogurt because its really high in sugar but it came so naturally almost to admire all of those treats, think about how good they probably are but then say "thats not for me, but these options are for me." And I didn't even have to finish what I took - it was a nice treat outside of my usual meal planning and now I just continue on my day. I'm quite proud of myself for not even considering the other things, or even feeling as if I was missing out by not having them.

    Any March Surgeries?

I’ll be 6 weeks post op on Thursday and I’m in the same exact boat. Minus the yogurt. I have zero hunger, get full after a few bites and nothing sounds or looks appetizing. I know this is the design but it’s demoralizing at the same time. Total and complete mental battle.

    Any March Surgeries?

I will be six weeks post op tomorrow and was down 34.8 lbs as of yesterday. I’m having a hard time finding anything appetizing to eat and I’m rarely hungry so it’s mostly yogurt these days. My liquids are going down easier lately and I’m grateful for that.
  8. Hello all, I like spicy food like buffalo sauce, a bit of cayenne in my cooking, sriracha, etc. I had some cayenne in a feta/Greek yogurt dip and it was delicious but I **** my pants after!!! Granted, that is generally a side effect, but I stayed away from spicy after that. I ate spicy foods no prob while I was pregnant so this reaction is a surprise. If you enjoy some spice, when was it okay after surgery? I’m ~4 weeks out
  9. I'm 11 months out of sleeve surgery. I came to build a routine in what I eat, and I absolutely enjoy every meal. Even if it's exactly the same as yesterday. I love it. Here's what I eat in a day (and the day after, and the one after.... 🙂 Breakfast: 2 eggs, 4 oz of diced lean ham (pork or turkey, or a turkey patty), 1 oz leek, 1 oz sweet peppers, all scrambled together. Add 6-8 cherry tomatoes and an espresso with 1 oz of 2% milk. Lunch: 5 oz of lean meat (chicken breast, pork loin, beef sirloin) grilled or pan seared, 2 cups of shredded fresh cabbage, one tablespoon of light mayonnaise Dinner: 5 oz of fish (cod, mahi, salmon, tuna, shrimp) and 1 cup of sliced zucchini or snap peas, all pan seared together, plus one Danon Light&Fit yogurt. That's about 1100 calories a day. Throw in the occasional apple or cup of berries, and it's 1200 calories, all in. And that's ALL I've been eating for the last 10 months. The only variation is the type of meat or fish I have. Or what flavor yogurt I choose. I'm not bored, and I look forward to every meal. It makes it easy to shop for and cook. Do yourself a huge favour and throw away ALL the crisps, cakes and any other greasy or sugary snacks you may have in the house. Then don't buy them again. If you really must snack, bite into an apple, or chew on a carrot. It keeps the mouth busy, without adding much caloric content. Oh, and I drink a gallon of water a day, to stave off constipation. Hang in there, believe in yourself, and maybe talk to a therapist or a friend about it.

    April surgeries

So on day 4 (of 7) I began to feel lightheaded and dizzy. I had been sleeping most of days 1-3 so didn’t consume much of anything. Talked to the bariatric nurse (day 5) who asked me about calorie count. I told her I’ve (like you all) I’d been focused on trying to get the 64 oz liquids/60g Protein in. She basically told me to vary my diet and try to get more calories. So, drank some liquidy butternut squash Soup, and watered down some yogurt. The soup is only 80 calories per cup. The chicken broth we have has 1g of protein and even fewer calories. She suggested I could have sugar free popsicles, so looked and they’re a whopping 25 calories each. So, I’m finding all this very challenging because My stomach isn’t big enough to drink all the fluids, consume protein, and worry about calories! Gaaaah (exasperated yell) This is why I asked my question. Lol!

Are you allowed yogurt? I mixed ranch dressing seasoning with plain Greek yogurt to make a ranch dip which I just ate with a spoon but that and pickles were my savory go on on my pre op diet (mine wasn’t all liquid the whole time).

    Hungry after BPD-DS

Update on the whey protein. I was sensitive to 'milk concentrate" whey protein. This includes the bariatric pal soups, puddings, and gnc lean shakes. It caused a lot of very foul gas and bowel discomfort. Whey isolate, Genepro, and several GNC shakes have been fine. I was not sensitive to the milk concentrate whey shakes before. The cottage cheese also gave me issues and I had to cut it out. Greek yogurt has been fine. So if you are stocking up before surgery I highly recommend making sure you get whey isolate, especially the Genepro as it has no flavor and can be added to anything to boost your protein intake.
  13. Greetings Coexister, i does seem that I am not a dumper either because I’ve tested this several times. I did get a bad reaction from drinking whole milk kefir. I got a stomachache. I wonder is this a form of dumping syndrome? When I drank low fat or non fat kefir, I absolutely had no problems with the kefir. However, when I had a frozen yogurt, I didn’t experience any sickness in my physical body. In terms of losing weight, for the last three weeks, I have stayed the same weight. I haven’t gained or loss weight. I guess that’s a good thing. You know something, Coexister? I have often wondered if my Bariatric Surgeon actually did the RYGB on me. My recovery is very similar to when I got the VGS in 2016. I control my snacking by putting everything I eat in my dietary journal. My dietitian gave me a calorie target and I rarely go above my calorie target. If there’s a particular snack I want to have, I budget for it within my calorie budget. I also read these forums for insight and inspiration as everyone that uses these forums have pearls of wisdom to offer each other. I have no regrets that I proceeded to revision to the RYGB because I my weight is coming down again and I have no more GERD & heartburn anymore. I also can’t risk get throat cancer from the hideous GERD I suffered from before I had my RYGB. 😃 I am six weeks post op and today was my first day back on solid food. I’m going back on solid food slowly - introducing each new food slowly back into my diet.
  14. I just started my pre-op diet today and tried the chicken flavored Unjury protein powder. I didn't love it. You have to heat the water to 140 degrees before adding the mix (no hotter or it changes consistency), which was just not quite hot enough for my taste and seemed a little chalky. I think I'll stick with protein shakes, and sip broth to get some saltiness to counter the sweet. I'll definitely check out the Swanson's bone broth! My pre-op diet doesn't allow milk of any kind, but I can have low fat cottage cheese and greek yogurt. What brand of sugar free popsicles are you all buying? I can't seem to find any and I think that would be a great thing to have on hand.

    Pre op diets

Unjury makes a chicken flavored protein powder that isn't completely terrible, but I prefer plain broth to counter the sweet. No fruit juice on my pre-op diet at all. I can have some low fat cottage cheese and greek yogurt though.

I do tomato soup with plain greek yogurt. It's about as salty as I can get. Sent from my moto g play (2021) using BariatricPal mobile app

    pre-op

No way that 1 cup of yogurt + some brown sugar and cocoa caused a 5lb weight gain, most of that is likely water if you stuck to your diet otherwise. Work closely with the nutritionist at your surgeon’s office to find a plan that is sustainable for you and hang in there. I have never eaten as little as 10g carb/day during this entire process and have been very successful. I think the lowest I ever did was 25g carb/day and that was quite short term. Now that I am nearing maintenance my guideline, per my surgeon’s office, is 70-80g protein/day and to just keep my carbs lower than my protein. It gets better!

    pre-op

Yes. I am ashamed. I ate a cup of nonfat yogurt with 1/8 cup of brown sugar and cocoa. Boy was it good but it wasn’t worth it. I felt much better physically the rest of the day after that, but I got on the scale tonight and I weigh 5 pounds more than I did this morning. So now I have lost a net 7 pounds instead of 12 in 6 days. I’m not going to kick myself over it. For now I guess I’ve got to continue the keto journey even if i do not feel well most of the time. Because I’ve passed out once and almost again yesterday, I am going to call the general doctor tomorrow to schedule an appointment before surgery. Because I don’t think things are right with my body. The bariatric clinic says it is not the diet but I am not convinced of that. It may be that some people just cannot do well on a plan that has only 10 grams of carbs per day and 700 calories. I mean, I am 65 years old.
  19. once I open a can of pumpkin puree, I use it pretty quickly. I'll make pumpkin protein shakes, pumpkin protein muffins, and pumpkin yogurt out of it. It really doesn't have any taste (unless you add spices, of course), so it's great for adding moisture (and fiber) to things..
  20. I make these occasionally, I use Greek yogurt for moisture - that works as well.
  21. This 4-ingredient* protein mug cake is amazing! (*This recipe is awesome as written, but see below for my recommended modifications.) Cocoa powder, protein powder, pumpkin puree, and sweetener of choice. It sounds weird, but you don't taste the pumpkin once it's cooked. You can even make it vegan if you use vegan protein powder. https://masonfit.com/one-minute-protein-brownie/ There are a lot of low-carb mug cake recipes out there, but this is the best one I've seen because it's so easy, low in calories, and doesn't require any weird, expensive, hard-to-find ingredients (unless you count protein powder, but I'm guessing most bariatric patients have a tub or four of protein powder in the house). It's amazingly cake-like for something that contains no flour. I normally eat it directly out of the bowl/mug, but I wanted to get a picture that shows the texture (unfortunately, I'm a terrible photographer, so you might just have to trust me). . I find it a bit dry (which could be because I use whey protein isolate instead of the recommended whey/casein), so I always top it with sugar-free syrup or melted sugar-free Jello (plus a dusting of powdered Swerve), flavored Greek yogurt, or -- my favorite -- raspberry or strawberry puree (sometimes I mix about half a tablespoon of raspberry puree into the batter, which adds a little moisture). . Although this recipe is great without any modifications, I couldn't help myself from tweaking it. I like to add a pinch of salt and a splash of vanilla. I also like to substitute half of the pumpkin puree with liquid egg substitute (like Eggbeaters), which provides even more protein. But that makes it more than 4 ingredients, so if you want to keep it simple, you can stick with the original recipe. 1 tbsp dark cocoa powder 1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder (or any flavor you like) Optional - calorie-free sweetener to taste (about 1 tbsp sugar equivalent) Optional - pinch of salt 2 tbsp pumpkin puree 2 tbsp liquid egg substitute (Eggbeaters or equivalent) Optional - 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract Mix dry ingredients in a mug or small bowl. Stir in wet ingredients to make a smooth batter. Microwave for 1 to 1.5 minutes (it might take some trial and error depending on your microwave; 1 minute 20 seconds is perfect for me). . Seriously, this is SO GOOD! If you try it, let me know how it goes!
  22. Scrambled eggs (for breakfast), yogurt, chili...not sure how cooking creative you are when camping, but what about taking foil packets with salmon and zucchini? If you will be using a camp stove, refried beans with cheese (maybe make fajitas for the husband). You could probably eat a hot dog or hamburger, if you chewed it very carefully.

Plain Greek Yogurt ~ what can I do with it??

My favorite is to mix two cups Greek yogurt with a pack of sugar free cream cheese pudding mix. It makes several servings (at least four depending on how much you eat I guess) and then I microwave some frozen strawberries for a minute and add them to it for a strawberry cheesecake-ish taste.

    Liver shrink Diet

I've been on preop diet for 10 days - through my birthday AND wedding anniversary. Its honestly not too bad. 2 protein shake, a creamy soup and a greek yogurt. Sticking to about 800 calories and down 8 pounds. Surgery is in 5 days. Excited and nervous.

Starting out on Soft Food Diet

My nutritionist said avocado is ok as a mayo substitute for tuna, but in moderation. I ate hummus and tzaziki, but my nutritionist said it didn’t have enough protein. She said to hold off with hummus and use the yogurt sauce as an accompaniment to fish, etc. Other programs did allow hummus which is where I got the idea.
