  1. My surgeon's office just called - they gave me a June 5th date which is less than 2 weeks away and WAY sooner than I expected (not that I'm complaining one bit!) - I start my 10 day Pre-op diet this Sunday. I think I'm in a state of shock, lol. I can't believe it's really happening
  2. Thanks everyone. All of my pills are capsules though so I'm not able to crush or split them. Maybe I'll try take one at a time and waiting 10 or so minutes in between. Glad its not just me!

    left shoulder pain?

BANDED APRIL 1, 2009 I woke up from surgery with left shoulder pain and it let go at about day 10, returning here and there on occasion. i was so bothered by it because i couldn't take a deep breath which helps with recovery. i am a swimmer and all i wanted to do was take a deep breath. it still hurts a bit on occasion, and like someone above said, it might come back. pain meds help and when you're done with those, tylenol helps. also, i used a heating pad which helped a lot. it gets better. good luck.

  6. Welcome! I know it's scary and yes it's a huge decision. It sounds like you have done a lot of work on yourself mentally and I think that's a major key to sucsess in this process. You are right, it's your decision who to tell and not tell about your surgery. I told one person, my mother, and that's it. If anyone asks how I am loosing the weight I just tell them I have committed to a high Protein, low carb lifestyle. When you come home after surgery you will be sore and on different stages of dietary restrictions....I don't see how you can keep that from your teenagers. I think they will notice, so in my opinion it might be a good idea to have a talk with them. You might be surprised at how happy they will be that you decided to become a fit, active and healthy mom. This was the best decision, my only regret is not having it done about 10 years ago. Keep coming to this forum, ask a lot of questions. You will do great!

    Finally Approved! Whoo hoo!

Congrats to you. It is good to hear someone had a good experience with Aetna. I fought with them for 18 months and was denied twice ( i was too healthy with a bmi of 48, but no comorbities). before finally getting approved and sleeved on 2/19. Finally hired a healthcare advocate who threatened to go to the media and to sue them.

    My Girl Susie

Thank you !! She really is my pride and joy, other than my daugher of course Paula good idea about the avitar! just looking at the one I have now makes me more nervous roflmfao !! Cindy, she has lovely colors, except when I'm wearing black DeLarla she is the biggest whimp when it comes to me touching her paws. When I cut her nails, I almost have to sit on her LOL, poor thing (some times she pee's on herself lol). I can't imagine painting them although I have though about it before. Vines, Astro is a great name for a dog. I love old dogs too but puppies just melt my heart. I sware if I didn't have to work, I would have 10 dogs (and probably no husband LOL).

  11. I had my gall bladder removed on 4/28 and scheduled to be banded on 5/19. My surgeon wanted to wait 3 weeks between surgeries. Has anyone had to go through this scenario? I am wondering if you felt physically ready for the second surgery and how the levels of pain and discomfort compared to each other. I very much value the input and experiences from those on this site and always welcome any recommendations. I also tried some of the Isopure flavors and each one had a very bad after taste. I am used to the powdered form which is much more palatable. I decided to order the New whey liquid Protein which are the 3.5 ounce "bullets". They are much better tasting and it is easier to consume the necessary amount of protein without all of the liquid volume. Just my thoughts. If anyone is interested, I am happy to provide the pricing and website information that I use.
  12. I got my third fill on Friday July 1st. I'm up to 3 ccs in a 4 cc band. I've never noticed much of a problem in my prior fills with some issues I'm having now. I'm burping a lot. A LOT. When I'm hungry I feel sick, my stomach hurts. I ate something with some pepper (black pepper) on it (I shook a little on) and I got a burning sensation in my stomach. I pureed some chili....way to spicy. Then yesterday I tried having a little spagetti sauce (out of the jar, not homemade and not spicy) and again, the burning sensation. Also, the heat of food, like Soup, seems irritatig. Cold things feel better. I've had some trouble eating....but I see steady improvement little by little. I can eat a very smooshed up boiled egg with a little mayo and some potted chicken as well as the mushies. I can only eat about a 1/4 cup at a time of anything. My doc is out of town til tomorrow. I've talked to his coordinator at his office last Thursday and she told me to call her this am to let her know how I'm doing and if I want to come in. I'm wondering what erosion feels like. Anyone know? I've lost about 10 lbs in the last week...which feels good, but i'm a little worried about my band.
  13. Can anyone recommend a brand of reliable scales? I have a digital set made by Thinner that I got from Avon years ago and even though it's gone through several 9-Volt batteries, it still works but if I step on that scale 10 times in the morning, I swear I'll get 7 different readings. A difference of -/+ 2.0 pounds can mean discouragement or encouragement so it actually matters.
  14. these stories. So, I was looking through my WW things and found my last weight loss attempt at WW's. That was in September of 01. My starting weight was 279. Then I look at the end progress which was March 02. Ending weight was 244. It took 6 MONTHS to lose 35 pounds!!!!!!!!!:bored I have been at this lap band thing for two months and have lost 40.5 lbs!!! What a difference for me!!! WOW, I was just amazed!!! I love my band!!! I keep feeling better and better EVERY single day!! Deanna

    Anxiety Pre op

I'm preop and scared too, although I dont have any allergy to antibiotics, except Septra, I am concerned about a leak because it can be life threatning. I'm sure if you were at risk your Dr would Not risk the surgery on you. The risk is minimal and it is imperative that you follow the instructions before and after to a T. My doctor has done 300 a year for the last 10 years with zero leaks and zero deaths. I hope you find comfort in that. You might want to talk to your surgeon and ask what if questions. Nothing is completely safe when it comes to surgery, or even riding in a car. Good luck Sent from my LGMS550 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Salad Dressing

Vera, have you tried Balsamic vinegars? (about 10 cal. tbl.) You can mix them w/ oil and spices for a marinade also. But I think it's the creaminess we're craving. Hidden Valley has a Ranch Lite w/ 40 cal. tbl.) I love stews, Soups, or a pot of Beans any time of the year. I think it's wonderful comfort food. And aren't we getting our vegetables in that way? (Any excuse to try to make it right. LOL)
  17. Good afternoon! I am scheduled to start my pre-op diet on 10/28/14 per my surgeon's office for my VSG scheduled on 11/11. I have been really contemplating starting my pre-op diet a week early for several reasons. First, my liver enzymes have been steadily increasing for the last 3 years and my pcp said I have a fatty liver which we all know is a risky condition with laparoscopic surgery. I do not want any chance of my surgery being aborted. I have had to make a lot of plans and organize a lot of our life to make this surgery happen while keeping my household operating while I am down. I have also met all of my out of pocket obligations with my insurance for the year. The holiday season will be upon us shortly along with a planned family vacation at the end of January. Surgery has to happen now or it will be a while before I can get everything into position again to make surgery possible at a later date. So with all of that, I am opting to start my pre-op diet a week early and do a 3 week diet instead of a 2 week diet. My surgeon's office is aware I am doing this and they are fine with it. They are baffled that someone would voluntarily submit themselves to another week of this diet when it wasn't required, but they understand why I am making this decision. Besides, an extra week of losing weight before surgery is less weight I will have to lose after surgery. Every ounce matters and every ounce lost will make surgery and recovery that bit easier. I am now trying to find a form of some type to keep track of my weight and body measurements on paper. I am also making a daily check sheet to make sure I follow my diet and get everything in that I should. So tonight I am enjoying pizza for dinner with diet coke to drink followed by a glass of wine and a caramel sundae for dessert. Tomorrow my new life and the journey to a better me begins! It is exciting and terrifying at the same time. Let's get this show on the road!

    Surgery Tomorrow June 1

Good luck tomorrow. I know what you mean about being thirsty. I was told to be at the hospital at 10:00. They did not take me back to surgery until around 1:30. I was glad they did let me have some ice chips that evening but the nausea was so bad that I didn't even want to eat them. I hope things go smooth keep us posted. Chap stick or some sort of lip balm is a good idea.

    11 Weeks...Calories?

My doc only gives protein goals and carb maxes... No calorie help at all... I could use some guidance because I feel stalled and dont know if I am eating enough... I am almost 10 weeks out and average 650 calories per day...
  20. Hey guys, I am new to this site and to the idea of surgery. I am looking into a lap band and i think i want to do i t, but i need support.I am 19 and I am tentatively planning for surgery in December. I just want to know about people my age who have done what I am trying to do. I am worried about excess skin. If I go through ALL this and still have to hide Im going to be pissed lol I am tired of dressing around insecurities and really just want to move on with my life. What advise do you have? How successful have you guys been? What is something you guys wish you knew before surgery.

I'm so excited and nervous. I have a meeting on Monday with Dr. Benavides. I'm going to a seminar he is holding on Saturday, February 19 at 10 am at the Surgery Center, Richardson, 610 North Coit. If anyone else wants to attend, call Melissa Jensen at (972) 331-9500. I'll keep you posted on my progress! Thanks for all the great support.

Just Got Home From Hosp, have A Question

My post op diet instructions went like this first week - thin liquids second week - thick liquids third week - soft foods fourth week - regular foods advance as tolerated by days 8 - 10 I was eating soft foods. I was told absolutely no Peanut Butter. However other folks eat peanut butter just fine. I personally don't like it so I don't eat it. Didn't your surgeon give you any guidelines? My doc had a specific day by day what I could eat packet that I had to read before surgery. Matter of fact he read it to me at my preop appointment.

    Recommendations?

I used maalox for gas... And I walked. Back and forth from the bed to the door... Maybe 10 times an hour!! I was given liquid pain killer but I never took it. It wasn't that bad. I wish you all the best.
  24. Thanks so much for your input Sleeve Master! I completely agree with you about the piece of plastic floating around! I kind of feel like eventually that's gonna have to come out, even if it's 10 yrs down the road! I feel like I'd be setting myself up for another surgery in the long run and I really don't want to do that. I hate needles as it is! Unfortunately I don't have the money to do it out of pocket. Turns out my insurance will pay all but about $2,000 and I've been saving that up for the last 6 months that I've been doing my diet plan. I really can't afford much else. I'm nervous about surgery because of the risks, but I've been exposed to those risks before with 2 c-sections, so it's nothing new to me. I'm just looking forward to losing the weight, exercising and enjoying it, playing with my little ones, and just feeling better about myself. I used to have such confidence, but it has just plummeted in the last 3-4 yrs, after I had my kids. And, I believe this will help my husband and I's sex life as well. I'm a lights off kind of girl and I hope to be much more confident when this is all said and done! After thinking about it all, it just seems like the sleeve is the most logical solution for me! I'm really happy I found this website about it and actually researched it! Looking forward to feeling happy and healthy again! Thanks again for your input! It is greatly appreciated! Katie
  25. I used Dr Ilian with Bariatric Pal. I've been quite happy. They send you home with a big book on VSG, a 10 week menu plan to follow, and have a gal you can ask unlimited questions of via email. I chose to have a video made of my surgery. (The concierge went to Walmart for me to get me a flash drive since I didn't know about this option before I arrived). They also sent me home with my blood test results (albeit in Spanish) and a disc of x-rays and my leak test. I drink a liquid vitamin from Costco (didn't take vitamins before surgery). I don't have much follow up care of my own choosing. I feel good, have energy, and I'm losing weight. I suppose if this were not the case I'd seek local medical support. I'm 3 months post op.
