Our Pets & Our Sore Tummies

I kept a pillow on my tummy the first few days, and my 10# cat could lay on that just fine. My 70# dog who thinks she's a lap dog was my biggest concern. I stayed in the recliner and she would put her front legs and her head on my lap (not belly) and just gave me sad eyes for a few days.

Our Pets & Our Sore Tummies

My surgery is the 18th, and I too have a little 10 pound dog. I know nothing will keep her off my lap, it's the 48 and 50 pound kiddos I have to worry about!

check out the blog - the world according to eggface. She has a whole post devoted to the puree stage. and then a couple times a month she'll have a post called "a day in my pouch" - she had RNY over 10 years ago and has successfully maintained her weightloss. She has lots of creative ideas for breakfast lunch and dinner and even tells you if she ate a snack that day and if so, what. Plus reading some of her early posts I find very inspirational.
  7. Reporting in that I had a great day today. Stuck with my meal plan and had a really good workout at the gym. Thanks again to everyone who provided words of encouragement. It was just what I needed! I'm still getting used to talking about weight loss and being honest when I have a bad day. I usually just suffer in silence because I'm so mad at myself and embarassed. Just about all of my friends and family members are thin and it's impossible to talk to someone who thinks having 10 pounds to lose is a big deal. I have to say I'm actually looking forward to my psych consult. Pretty sure it is going to be more helpful than I think.
  8. I started my pre-op liquid diet on Memorial Day and did well until today. I fought every urge to cheat and eat real food but some how I made it through the moment. That was until a few hours ago. I had a momement of weakness and went to Wendy's and got a kids meal and ate the whole thing. I am even more disappointed in myself because I knew that I was already at an increased risk for surgery problems because my liver is 3 times the normal size of someone my age and weight. I feel so helpless and I'm worried I am going to have trouble staying on the diet now because I couldn't make it 10 simple days on liquids only. Anyone go through a similiar momemt of weakness? I am prepared for harsh responses, heck I probably really need to hear them so that I don't fail like this again.

    smoking

My doctor and most reported here will not go the surgery if you smoke. The risk of complications is said to increase and the healing can be prolonged. Look for a thread called tested positive for nicotine. A pre- op urine test can get your approved, scheduled surgery cancelled. I'm not a mean finger pointing ex- smoker. I have quit a few times cold turkey, by choice. Once for over a year and I liked smoking BUT I did not like how it impacts my body and I have quit again for this surgery ( a lot out of fear) but I really plan not to go back. You should be clean about 4 weeks minimum before the surgery. I already had to do a six month diet supervision and I won't let a smoke wreck my plans... I'm scheduled for May 19 and I am still on the wagon. You can do it.
  10. I was considering purchasing Tony Horton's 10 minute training program and was wondering if anyone has tried it. If you gave tried it let me know your thoughts. I am on my treadmill 30 minutes 5 days a week, but if I could get a better result in 10 that would be great.

    Anyone from New Jersey

I'm from Westchester County, NY and relatively close to NJ. Had surgery 19 days ago and a bit lost! My first adjustment is this week.
  12. I made this last night and it was big hit! I'm eating it again today for lunch and it really is good. Enjoy! Ingredients: 4 Talapia filets (or any type of fish you like) 1/4 c. salad dressing, ranch, nonfat or lowfat 3 T. yogurt, plain, nonfat or lowfat 1 1/2 T. mustard 1/2 lb. spinach, fresh (I used a big bag of baby spinach) galic salt and various other spices to your liking (I used a little garlic and Emrils fish rub) Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Rinse fish, pat dry with paper towels and arrange in glass baking dish. Mix dressing, yogurt and mustard; spoon evenly over fish. Spice the fish up, use your favorite seasonings, doesn't take much as the salad dressing and mustard have some spice in them. I like to sprinkle a little of Emeril's fish rub on mine, then maybe a shake or two of the garlic salt. Bake until fish is no longer translucent, 8 to 10 minutes. (I cooked mine more like 15 - 20 min) Remove tough stems from spinach; rinse thoroughly and drain. (I didn't have to do this as I bought the baby spinach in a bag) Heat nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. When skillet is hot, add spinach and stir-fry just to wilt the leaves, about 30 seconds. (I also added a little pam butter flavored to the skilley to give it a little more flavor and seasoned the spinach with a squeeze of lemon and garlic salt) Arrange spinach single layer on serving plates; top with baked fish. 13. Things I've come up with on lazy days and for work lunch. Tuna Salad- 1 can of tuna, 1tbsp of miracle whip, 1tbsp of relish or chopped onion. Mix well. (Makes 2-3 bandster meals) chicken Salad- 1 can of chunk chicken, 1tbsp of miracle whip, 1tbsp of relish or chopped onion. Mix well. (Makes 2-3 bandster meals) Egg Salad- 1 hardboiled egg, 1/2-1tbsp of miracle whip, 1/2-1tbsp of relish, dash of salt & papper. Mix well, sprinkle paprika on top. (Serves 1) Ham Yum Yum- 1 can of chunk ham (I really advise cooking the ham first, via microwave or skillet.. its very gellatenous(sp) otherwise). Mix with 1tbsp of applesauce. (Makes 2-3 bandster meals) Turkey Yum Yum- 1 can of chunk turkey (cold or hot), mix with 1tbsp of cranberry sauce (jelly). (Makes 2-3 bandster meals) Ham Salad- 1 can of chunk ham (again, do yourself a favor and heat this up!!), mix with 1tbsp of miracle whip (or mayo, but MW is lower in calories), chopped onion (as much as you like, I love onion so I put a good amount in there..and red onion is best in this recipe), 1/2tbsp of relish, salt & pepper. (Makes 3-4 bandster meals) Chicken & Dumplings- 2 cans of chunk chicken (or 1 big can from Sam's), 2x 14oz cans of chicken broth (I used 3c of Water and 2 chicken bouillion cubes). Bring broth to a boil in a pot, add chicken, cook for a little bit till its all nice and hot- add salt, pepper, garlic salt (and I like a dash of thyme). Mix 2/3c of biscuit mix (I prefer bisquick) and 1/3c of skim milk. Drop in small balls of dough into the broth. Sprinkle with more garlic salt, and a dash of paprika. Cook 10 minutes uncovered, then 10 minutes covered. I add a little corn starch to the broth to make it more of a gravy and in retrospect we had way too much broth, so maybe try cutting that in half. (Made approximately 4 unbanded servings) All of these things reheat well. They don't all LOOK good the next day but once you nuke it, YUM! So I eat 1 ham salad for example over 3 days at work.

  15. Just wanted to check in. I'm almost three weeks post op and down 50 lbs from preop diet. I'm doing great, starting to eat more "normal" types of food. I feel great! I just wanted to thank everyone on this forum for all the support as I began this journey. I was very nervous and hasn't been bad at all. Those last few days before surgery, reading people's stories on this forum got me through. So glad I did this.
  16. I am a new bandster (2-11-10). What is sliming and PB????? please help:confused:
  17. Hi everyone! I feel bad and sad and know that is my fault of not following the diet and sport but I don't know how to manage it all.. I'm full time working mom of 2 boys, hubby is helping around but not much as he is really overloaded with work and one day off per week.. Boys are 10 (my stepson) and 4 (my birthson) and are very active and noisy and difficult to handle. My work is stressful. No friends or family around to help as we are expats living in the foreign country at the moment. All that is making it soo hard to focus on me and follow every rule I have to follow.. My day starts at 5 am and the only time I can be free falls after 9-9.30 pm and by that time I am sooo tired and just can't imagine myself doing any sports.. My food also isn't good enough as most of the time I don't have time cooking for myself, so I end up eating everything I cook for my family. It is not that bad food or unhealthy but still not suitable enough for me. I feel desperate today cuz I made my progress report and realized that despite I have lost 59.4 pounds in total, since bypass surgery, I have lost only 39.6 pounds. As a fact, I am 6 months post op and have such a poor results and such a poor self discipline and control over my life. I feel even at times that my pouch has stretched a lot cuz amount of food U can eat increased a lot too. I want to gain control. I cannot turn the clock back but I am ready to put myself at the first place now. Any advice on how could I start over? Cuz emotions and feelings that again the food controls my life are just killing me inside. I want to reach my target.. want to change.. just don't know again where to start... P.S. to make it easier to understand.. My surgery was done back home and the first 8 weeks were great with sport and food and then I had to go back here.. school, work.. and slowly everything went out of control.. and I found myself living the same life as before surgery. So for what then I was doing it all? Please guys, don't judge me much.. I just look for aupport I am so much lacking here..

Getting Sleeved the 17th anyone else?

Yay Im sorry got this late my appt is at 10:30 check in 12:30 surgery how about you?
  19. My first appointment with my surgeon is on July 14th, so I have a good 5 weeks. I would like to use this time wisely. I don't feel the need to go on weeks of food funerals, though I am sure I will have 3 or 4 favorite meals during this time. But how else can I best use the time til mid-July? Here's what I am in the process of doing now: I have read several books and am well versed on the different surgery types, am uncertain btw. sleeve and RNY, will rely on physician input once he sees the whole health picture. I am seeing my primary care doc on this month to officially record starting weight, and let them know I am getting WLS. I will attend support group meetings. Am getting my psych eval done this week. Trying out different protein products. So I guess the big question is, do I start serious, low carb, dieting now, in the meantime? I am the type who can lose 20 pounds fairly easily, but then....I stall, and I stall HARD, and then I usually get sloppy and start slowly regaining. So I am a little worried about losing my 20 easy pounds, showing up to the surgeon mid-July and he says, hey lose 10% of your body weight before surgery please, and then I am stuck "starting over" right in the really hard part of every diet I have ever been on. Maybe I am whining here? I would like to do everything I can to get a head start before that first surgeon appt, since I'd like to do the surgery as soon as I can bc of work cycles (I work in college administration). I supposedly have no mandatory diet and exercise waiting period (we'll see on that....). I figure that starting to lose weight now will just mean it's some weight at least that I don't have to lose later, so maybe I should just jump in and diet? Try bariatric recipes? What do you recommend? Thanks for any input or advice.

    My Surgery is this morning

I went to sleep very easily last night, however I woke up at 3am to use the bathroom and could not get back to sleep. I finally got up around 3:40, checked my email and responded to one of them, then went back to bed. I think I dozed off and on and I just decided to go ahead and get up around 5:45. The first thing I did was pray, before my feet even hit the floor, because if something should happen while I'm in surgery (and I'm not thinking morbid thoughts or anything, I'm just being smart) then I know Me and God are ok, then I'm ok... Then I shook my sheets really good and made my bed (I already put fresh clean ones on) thinking about coming home and climbing back in the bed for a nice nap. (I'm being optimistic and hoping I won't be in too much pain! haha!! So anyway, I'm about to get a shower and get this show on the road. My Mom is picking me up at 7:00, I have to be at the hospital at 9:00 and my surgery is around 10:30. Thought we'd stop for a nice breakfast on the way.....LOL!!! JUST KIDDING!! It takes an hour and 15 or 20 min to get to the hospital from my house and we don't know EXACTLY where were going when we get to the hospital so... My daughter Katie (who is almost 19, is going with us also. She will be my primary caregiver for the next couple of days. SO---My journey begins... feeling ever so slightly nervous, but optimistic.
  21. I think it's tough being only 4'11". At that height even just 5 pounds makes a huge difference in how one looks. I think it's best to select a weight that you think you can maintain for the long haul. If it was me, and this is strictly my opinion, I would probably shoot for at least another 10 to 15 pound loss just to give that extra bit of room when maintenance starts. Congrats on your success so far!

    Slow Loss At the Beginning

I fear sounding like a broken record but here goes... I was banded exactly 1 month ago and have only lost 10 lbs. I am real happy with that but... I thought I'd lose a lot this first month (like a bunch of you lucky folks). Here's my question. Has anyone had a slow start (like myself) but once they had their first fill have the wl kick in to a good pace (1-2 lbs per week?). If so, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

    Slow Loss At the Beginning

Hi guys I am also losing really slow (3 months, 16 days and counting) and as of yesterday I was back to only losing 7 kilos ( from 10 kg - I blame the heat wave in melbourne). I have to admit, I feel a twinge of pain in my new stomach every time I read how many pounds other people are losing ( specially since you all write in pounds which is like .5 kilo so for a second before i convert is like WOW!!!! what am i doing wrong!!???? that is, besides eating pretty much all I want in portions larger than I would like to and enjoying every morsel.....)) Ok, I am off track, what I came to say is that of course we shouldnt be tempted into comparing our progress to others', we are all in the race to get to the finish line, nobody is timing it tho, so we are not competing with each other. Now, my mantra if you like, this time around ( after hundreds of diets) has changed to quality not quantity, in every sense. I want to lose weight while enjoying every day, every meal, and with NO concern of how much faster i could do it if I applied myself to the task at hand. After all, this time around, it is NOT a diet. I am finally making changes that have to last for the rest of my life. Every diet before: pills, shots, starvation, protein, carb, no carb, low carb, grapefruit, rice and melon, cabagge soup, etc, etc, were about how fast i could lose as much as possible before I lost the ability to keep up the madness and go back to .... well, eating like fat me. Now, my will power (so to speak) is not going away after 6 weeks of hunger! So I am enjoying every day that the scales go down a little bit ( hopefully the heat wave will be over soon Sorry I tend to go on and on and on.... tellie ps, I am soooo looking forward to my next fill on thursday I only have .5 ml in at the moment which means, well... lots of food!

    Slow Loss At the Beginning

I couldn't remember how much I had lost the first month until I looked at the back of a picture I took, I only lost 12 pounds the first month so, really you are doing very well, especially since you haven't had your first fill yet. Most liquidy foods you have to have in the first month have a lot of calories/carbs/sugars anyway so it is hard to lose that way. Just think, you weighed 10 pounds more a month ago. You are right on track........keep up the good work.
