    Hello

Hi everyone, I thought I'd weigh in on this topic. As everyone said there are pros and cons to both surgeries. I am a long-term successful lap band patient. So I must admit I'm biased now with my 20/20 hindsight. I was really confused and wondering whether Lap band surgery was for me. I flip-flopped about whether I wanted band or bypass and struggled with which would be best for me. I ultimately chose to be lap banded because it was the least risky, and 3-5 year outcomes for band and bypass patients are pretty similar. For me it was all about the long-term. I was great at dieting. I was just never able to take weight off and keep it off for more than 5 minute...Now in my fifth year, I've been maintaining a normal, healthy weight since late 2007. It's really important to learn what YOU NEED TO DO, to be successful with this tool. I've written a lot of what I've learned on this jouney about how to use the tool and what it takes to be a successful lap band patient. You can find it by following the links below. Good luck on your journey!

    Brand new to the forum

Welcome. I know there are other folks on here from Israel. You posted to the Gastric Bypass forum. Have you already decided on the bypass? I was recently sleeved after a very long time preparing. I was completely against any kind of surgery until my Dr. convinced me to just check it out and learn more. I found that the little knowledge I had was very outdated. I, too was very obese but until the past few years hasn't had any major health issues. Then, I started to fall apart. Today, I couldn't be happier with my recovery and more hopeful about my future. Best of luck with your journey. BariatricPal is an invaluable resource.

    Post Op appt today!

Well Guys!! I made it. I was banded last week, 10/19. The day after the surgery I though to myself what the Hell did I do to myself!! That thought soon passed after having lost 11 lbs. since last Wednesday. I fell good for the most part, still a bit sore, the Doc says that its mainly from the Hiatal Hernia. I still have another 10 days to go on the liquid diet, that's getting kind of old. If anyone has any suggestions for liquids, I'd love to hear it. I get my 1st fill November 22nd. Just in time for Thanksgiving!! The only issue I seem to be still having is a lot of belching and gas. Is anyone experiencing that too? Good luck to all

    band to sleeve

I had band to sleeve surgery in November. I had my band placed in 2005 and had nothing but problems. But the Dr. deflated the band about a month preop and did the removal and sleeve in the same surgery. It was a difficult surgery for me due to scar tissue from the band and from a previous open spleenectomy from years ago. I don't know about your insurance requirements but mine was horrible. They approved the surgery and after the fact told me there was a 25,000 cap per lifetime for bariatric care. I had a four day stay in the hospital due to complications which resulted in a 100,000 bill~ that I'm responsible for....

    Consultation tomorrow

It went well. I didn't meet the surgeon yet. I got everything but the surgery scheduled. They say I can have surgery by the end of November. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. I am 54 and about 60lbs over weight. I was above to have gastic bypass from my insurance. My Dr. thinks gastic bypass is best for me. I am not sure about that! I think I would feel better with the band. I am now reading all information about the band. I have a friend who had the band and it did not work for her. She did not loss weight and was very sick with the band. I know you do not loss weight as fast with the band that you would with the bypass. I am very scared to have the bypass. So now I will be seeing my dr and tell her that I would feel better the band. Has anyone had both surgeries? Please share your experience

The Jeopardy theme song now playing..

I started the process about a month ago. I went for a consult to see Dr. Artuso. 1st time meeting him. He answered all my 20 questions I had and said if this was want I want to do then I would be a perfect candidate. Leaving his office the receptionist who are amazing told me there was a openings to the needed consults the next day. I got my cardio and pulmonary consult done the next day. Received my letter of necessity from my primary on Friday of that week (talk about timing, when I called his office he was leaving that saturday for 3 weeks out of the country dr's without borders. ) I had my CXR that weekend. I had the echiogram done on Tuesday and a stress test on Wednesday. Saw my cardiologist on Wednesday and he said all is go and given his approval. Saw the nutritionist on Thursday and after a long chat she said I was an excellent candidate. I expressed a concern not getting approved as I do not have any comorbities. Not to steal someones quote but I too seem to be a healthy fat person. My BMI is 46.9 percent. My knees and feet hurt all the time. Even at night when I have them elevated. I work 2 jobs. One is a supervisor in a group for the state home. I often work over 8hours a day. Sometimes I am on my feet all day running around. My other job is a work as a LPN for a nursing agency doing per diem work. That is a 8 hrs of nonstop go go go. I barely get a chance to sit down to eat or even go to the bathroom. My decision to get the band came after a long thought of over 5yrs. I have had this dr. number for that long. I have talked to nurses who have had the gastric bypass. I dont know anyone personally who has had the lapband. I went 2yrs ago to a seminar at Westchester medical center sat thru it. Walking out feeling like you know what.. "I put this weight on by my own hand and mouth I need to take it off" I joined a gym days later. I would go to the gym 5-6 days a week and pound the hell out of myself. 2yrs later I had made little dent. I had gone to my primary and had routine bloodwork. Hoping my thryroid was to blame.. NOTHING. Back to the gym I go. Fast forward to this summer. In June I was at my sisters house. Wihin a matter of 1 hour I broke the stairs to her pool, and inflatable floatation device and 1 stair going up a set up steps. Thank god I was amongst family. I was humiliated. That was a breaking point for me. I am tired of living life not to the fullest. I would rather now sleep then go out shopping or stay at home watching tv. My feet hurt more often than not. So now I wait...:confused2:
  8. I am new to the site and have my initial consulation on 9/11/09. I am going to Jamaica on November 12 and is debating the actual date for my surgery. One part of me wants to get it done as soon as my insurance approves it and the other is thinking of what retrictions I may have when in Jamaica. If done right, i would be on solid foods by the time of my trip. And since I dont drink, the ability to not drink as much is not an issue. If you have had experience in traveling out of the country with lap band, did it ruin your experience?
  9. I have been approved and given a date. I am so excited I cant even do any work. I am sure if i wasn't going to Jamaica in November, the surgery would have been then. But I am HAPPY!!!
  10. I am sorry that you lost your brother at such a young age, that is terrible. I never had a band, but I am one of the lucky people who not only gets the slimies that band people have but also the dumping that bypass people have. Just the other night I had maybe 3-4 bites of very well chewed steak and I was frothing, sliming, and oozing goo for almost an hour afterward. A few weeks ago I got a little crazy and had 2-3 bites of dessert at dinner and in a few minutes my heart was racing and I was sweating and barfing. It was really very sexy, lol. The sleeve is a constant reminder that I can't eat too much and if I do it's instantly punishing. I am happy that I have my sleeve, but if I had been able to stop eating so much without it, I would have skipped the sleeve and I would now be able to eat like a normal person! I have three friends who know that I had the procedure, but everyone else is a little weirded out by the fact that if we're out to dinner I really cannot eat much at all and the few times I've had one or two bites to many, I get super sick. The sleeve is nice but it very much comes with its own set of trade-offs.

No protein until 3 weeks out?

My surgeon's directions were to not start your Protein supplements until day 5 after surgery or until you have passed gas. The advise from different surgeons will differ. It is common for individuals to not meet their protein requirements at the very beginning because their stomachs are in a major heal mode. But since your surgery was on 11 November, I think you are far enough along to experiment with the various Protein shakes until you find one that you can tolerate.
  12. Ok... so I was banded on the 21st of November 2008. I thought I was prepared for the post surgery diet, but I've come to realize that I was so wrong. For the first 3 days, I did the clear liquid diet with no problems. For day 4 to 14, I was instructed to follow the full liquid diet program, and from week 2-4 I was to progress to soft/purees. On day 4, I was hungry and wanted something with substance. I had mushy Beans. I ate a very little bit and was full. I had no discomfort at all. That night, I drank the juice of a Soup. Since then, I've also had rice, bread, a very small amount of tender meat on Thanksgiving and Cereal. I had actually convinced myself that as long as my body felt OK with it, I would be ok. A couple of instances, I figured if I drank with my food, that I would just wash it down to the bottom of my stomach, and wouldn't disturb my pouch. So from Monday until Satuday, I just pretended like the rules didn't apply to me. I felt fine, and convinced myself that as long as I didn't feel sick, I would be ok. I found this forum and it was like a slap in the face. I am so scared of what I could have done to myself. I am going to get back on the bandwagon and hope it's not too late.

  14. Prior to my RNY gastric bypass surgery 5 years ago I had sleep apnea but I also had severe asthma. The sleep apnea problem went into remission within a couple months. The asthma disappeared after around 3-4 years. There was recent research performed in South Korea that showed a direct correlation between weight loss in men and improved lung function. A group of researchers led by Dr. Eun Kyung Choe from Seoul National University Hospital Healthcare System Gangnam Center, Seoul, South Korea, studied the association between abdominal obesity and lung function — their study published in PLOS One. These investigators used clinical records from about 1100 adult Korean people — 428 men — assessing them at baseline and following them for about 3 years. All were healthy at the beginning of the study, and all were non-smokers who had never smoked. As the amount of VAT (visceral adipose tissue - fat tissue located deep in the abdomen and around internal organs.) decreased in men so did both FVC (forced vital capacity) and FEV1 (1 second forced expiratory volume). These measures are used, as well as their ratio (FEV1: FVC) to help diagnose lung diseases like emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The authors suggested that the changes in lung function associated with decreases in VAT might be due to mechanical differences, e.g. less pressure on the diaphragm, and/or due to the greater propensity of the VAT to release inflammatory cytokines which could trigger systemic inflammation. https://www.acsh.org/news/2018/02/28/losing-fat-might-mean-better-breathing-12629

    Barix Clinic In Langhorne Pa.

It's good to hear you were pleased with them. I'm waiting for approval from my primary Doc. I've had the psych and dietary approvals but when I went to my Doc. appt. my BP was higher than he wanted it to be. He put me on a new med. and said as long as it's down when I go back on Aug. 30th he'll give me the approval. As we all know high BP is a co-morbidity but I'm at his mercy. He wanted me to go to a seminar on Gastric Bypass as he's had alot of patients with success by going that route but I told him I know it's not an option for me. I'm crossing my fingers my BP is down so the authorization process with my insurance can start.
  16. I had my Bypass in Sep 27 2017, during the first 3 weeks I lost 30# but after that no even one more.. I am very frustrated... is this normal?

Just Ended Day 3 Of Preop Diet

I got down to 198 but I am back at 240 now. Well I'm 233 this morning, the liquid diet has shed 7 lbs so far. I am now diabetic and wasn't when I got the band and I'm praying the bypass will resolve this for me. I feel I need the bypass to keep me from cheating. I need the dumping that it will hopefully provide. I'm also looking forward to finally feeling full after eating small amounts of food. I have a 3yr old and I want to be able to play with her without being out of breath after 2 min. I pray we both do well and please keep in contact! I'm also on Facebook as lisa Zaccone McGowin and my email is lisamcgowin@yahoo.com Lisa :-)
  18. Hello I would suggest that you go with what surgery is best for you - not let your schooling decide for you! School can be postponed, your health cannot! However, that being said, I would say that in your situation, a band would be better as there's less healing to go through. Remember that with a Bypass you'll have had major major surgery, spent some time in Intensive Care and been pretty poorly. With a band there is not a single change to your anatomy, and to be honest, after 10 days I was feeling more or less back to normal. The "lack of food thing" you speak about - I feel no different - no ligtheadedness etc. I've had my 2nd fill and I'm still not at my sweet spot yet, but I'm getting there and am losing weight slowly. To those that don't know i've had the band, my diet is working well!!!! After the band the pain was completely tolerable - only 2 or 3 days of taking pain killers, and then rest for a few days. after 10 days I was out walking 3 miles a day and enjoying the rest of my time off work (My GP signed me off work for 3 weeks!!!!! - totally unecessary!)
  19. Hi there, welcome to the forum. I made the decision after I gained almost 75lbs after I retired, As I turn 40 this wt started creeping up slowly and I just could't get it off no matter how many step aerobics and spin classes I took. I also ate small amounts but I could never get full and would end up consuming too many calories. I have been con constant diets my entire adult life froom 17 years old to 43 years old. I would say at least two crash diets per year because I was in the military and I had to starve myself twice per year to make weight. Upon retirement and my 45h birthday I was at 250lbs my highest wt ever, I took a look at a photo from my gym and I said it's time to do something drastic so I started researshing the gastric bypass. I ran into someone who was researching the sleeve and I did also, I liked what I read about the sleeve and got the surgery in Jan 2012. I am now down to 182lbs in 6 months and I could NEVER HAD DONE IT WITHOUT THE SLEEVE. I could not do this alone not even with all my military discipline, courage, blah, blah, blah. My best advice is to read and gather as much info as you can and prepare yourself mentally. It is an emotional experience, I have lost friends because of this surgery, they think I am better than they are after I lost the wt. My lifestyle is changed now and I can't be around all the food any more, they can't understand that. Thank God my husband supports me and he is the only friend I need. So get strength and knowledge because you will need it, Good luck to you and I wish you success and happiness. I know I found it with the sleeve and only wish I had the operation done earlier
  20. The date is getting closer. I go in for the sleeve on November 27th. Start liquid diet this Tuesday. Dread that part. I just want it to work forever, I don't want to be a failure. I am a bit overwhelmed with the liquid diet before and after.

    bipolar I and WLS.

I too am bipolar, I was sleeved in December 2012 and my medication never changed. I started pre op yesterday as I go in for an omega loop gastric bypass on 29th May. I too am feeling anxious, depressed and struggle to sleep. I have been advised that my medication won't change aft the bypass. I was also told that I cannot crush the tablets at all as they are time released for a reason

    Hi Everyone!

    second time having bypass? Sweet
  23. Hello all! I have had my lapband for 4.5 years. The usual story here. Had success, lost 70 lbs in the first year. Then the band just changed. To much restriction, couldn't eat chicken, steak or eggs. Started rely on slidder foods. Had all the fluid removed b/c i was tired of having food stuck l the time. Have slowly gained 40 lbs back over the last 2.5 years. Was considering the sleeve back August but decided to give me band one more try. Since i have already paid for it and did have success. Have had several fills since September but here I am with minimal fluid i think somewhere between 2 and 3 cc's and having to much restriction agian while losing no weight. I have actually gained 4 lbs. I am exhausted from dieting and working out. My joints are killing me from all this weight pouding it out in the gym. I just do not understand why my body refuses to drop any weight. I am seeing my laband doc this coming Wednesday to discuss a revision. I have emailed him and told him i wanted to talk about this so he is aware. He said that he usually does them in two surgeries, waiting 3 months in between. I am very nervous about such an invasive surgery which is why i didn't opt for gastric bypass years ago. But i just do know what else to do. I feel like i have two choices: be fat or have this surgery. My hubby is behind me, which i was a little surprised. he was not a fan of me having the lapband but has always been supportortive. He hates the labpand and said he can no longer watch me choke on my food. When i brought up the sleeve he said that he loved the way that i am but realizes that i am getting nowhere on my own. He said that he sees all the work that i put in and that he is sad that i have to rely on surgery. I guess this post was more of a vent/telling my story and hoping for any info and stories that anyone has. Love this forum and have learned a lot.

  25. Hi to all who contribute to this site - I am in Australia's Hunter Valley and have a surgery date in Sydney with Dr Michael Crawford on July 31. I'm nervous and excited; dreading the Optifast stage (quite panicked about this actually) and hoping that this decision is going to work for me. Thanks to EVERYONE who contibutes to this site - I've learnt so much in the lead up to this decision and so much of it is from this site. I've started a blog journal - it seems important to document one of the most significant decisions of my life. I knew that one day it would come to WLS - I nursed some of the early gastric bypass patients in the late 70s and early 80s as a student nurse (not a nurse anymore) and it was such risky surgery back then. Lapbanding is such a great leap forward - I hope it's right for me. Cheers and I too hope to make a great contribution to this site. All the best to everyone here. Melanie
