April surgeries
Sab_Hof445 replied to BigDreamer2021's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my surgery on April 28th and I am down 23 pounds (32 if I count the preop diet). My biggest issue is eating slowly - I can't seem to be able to do that, unless it is a yogurt in front of my computer while I am working. Any ideas to slow things down when I have meals with my family ? -
Greek yogurt, cheese sticks, Babybel cheese, beef jerky, small individual packets of nuts all work. Sometimes I'll make protein muffins, too...
-
I am 6 weeks out of surgery and I already ran out of ideas of what to eat. I had been eating yogurts, cottage cheese, refried beans, cheese, scrambled eggs, and protein shakes. I don't feel like eating this anymore to the point where I just dont eat and will drink water instead. What else can I eat when I am hungry!?

Quick Question About Full Liquid Stage POST OP
SummerTimeGirl replied to SummerTimeGirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thanks guys! I do have some bone broth at the ready for that stage too because it has so much more protein than regular broth. As for the yogurt, yeah not sure but it's on the list (plain, vanilla or lemon). As are those bean soups that are to be blended. That still has me baffled. -
Hi Lizonaplane, This is kind of typical for me; Breakfast: coffee, Okio yogurt Lunch: 2oz Pre-cooked chicken or fish, 1-2 oz Avocado, 16oz Protein2O drink Dinner: 2oz Pre-cooked Chicken or Fish, sliced tomato. Snacks: Sugar free popsicles, soft fruits e.g berries, tangerines. I avoid tropical fruits. I mix 16oz of Protein2O with 16oz Crystal Light. Which improves the taste and give me 32oz of fluid. I buy pre-marinated chicken from a carniceria (pollo para asar) and fish (Tuna, swordfish, salmon) from a local distributor. I grill or steam them and then freeze them in 2oz portions. This is working for me as I am not really that picky of an eater, especially since surgery.

I haven't had surgery yet, but I have seen elsewhere that some people can eat boneless skinless chicken thighs even if they can't do chicken breasts. Maybe try that? Also I agree with @Highly_Undermedicatedthat ground meat (you can get chicken, pork, turkey, beef, veal, etc) might be easier that a whole piece of meat, from what I have read. I have made ground turkey meatballs in a red curry sauce that were excellent, and they were pretty low in carbs (just a little corn starch as a binder). I've also made a more traditional red sauce turkey breast meatball dish; that had more carbs because it had panko binder and the tomato sauce had carbs even though it was no sugar. I also make buffalo chicken dip a lot (I add extra chicken thighs to it). Another favorite of mine that might be good after surgery is chili, since it's got ground meat and beans, and otherwise low carbs, and can be modified a lot. I eat it with Greek yogurt instead of sour cream and shredded cheese.

GOING BACK TO OLD HABITS
HealthyLifeStyle replied to KeeVSG4life's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm not sure how you can eat that stuff so soon after the surgery. I am almost 9 months out, and still can't eat most things without feeling sick. The only advice I can give you is to think about your health. You look young, but as you get older the weight really effects your health badly. If your going to eat a lot of something, at least have it be something healthy. Ice cream was my favorite before my surgery, now when I crave it, I eat frozen yogurt instead and it satisfies me. Try to do food substitutions. I also used to eat tons of chocolate, now I will eat a small pc of dark chocolate and it makes the craving go away. Plus think of all that you went thru with the surgery and maybe that will help you push fwd. Good Luck -
Quick Question About Full Liquid Stage POST OP
SummerTimeGirl posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
So , one of the items listed as allowed during my Post Op FULL LIQUID phase they have listed is: Blended Bean Soups (black bean or lentil) Now, wouldn't a blended up black bean or lentil soup be more of a pureed type food? I can't imagine either being very liquidy. They also list "Strained Low Fat Cream Soups (made w/milk, cream of broccoli, cream of potato, cream of chicken or tomato)." Now, every cream soup I've ever come across is THICK and doesn't seem easily able to be strained. Then again I'm thinking of preparing them right from the can with no added milk or water. I guess they mean add milk first then strain it? Also, do you have a black bean and/or lentil soup suggestion for this phase? Or any other soups that would work? Or any other FULL LIQUID suggestion other than the typical waters (flavored or otherwise), teas (caffeine free of course), coffee (caffeine free of course), fat free puddings and jellos, and Light Yogurts? Looking for stuff I may not have thought of. Thanks a million! Trying to gather a shopping list for AFTER surgery. -
February 2021 Sleevers - How is it going?
XtinaDoesIt replied to Jaye W's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi folks! HW: 267 SW: 255 CW: 227 Height: 5'5 Can't believe I'm 3 month out already! I've lost almost 30 lbs since surgery. 40 lbs since January and I feel great! I was stalling A LOT the first 2 month. I've done so much extreme diets in the past, I think my body was used to it and was trying to wait me out. I haven't had any stalls this month though so I think my body is finally giving up on holding my fat cells hostage! LOL! I am eating roughly 700-1000 calories. I still mostly drink my calories with protein shakes/drinks. I usually have yogurt for breakfast, a handful of leftovers for lunch and dinner with protein and veggies or chili. I just started working out again last week. Mostly cardio and Yoga. I am hoping to lose another 30lbs by my birthday (September), then another 30 lbs to my goal by December. I've come to terms with the fact that I didn't dramatically lose a bunch of pounds and my journey is more slow and steady. I haven't brought any new clothes yet but I do feel more comfortable in the clothes I have now. I am thinking its time for some new bras but I want to hold out as long as possible. On a side note, my boyfriend has been so supportive and gone on this weight loss journey with me (without surgery). He is down almost 30 lbs too (MEN!). I think my slower loss keeps him motivated. We are like 3 lbs away from each other and have a mini race going on during our weekly check ins. -
Does time of day impact fullness?
2Bsmaller18 replied to meggs353's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I get hungrier as the day goes on and thus tend to eat more in the afternoon and evening. If I am busy I can skip eating until noon fairly easily. However, as I eat during the day even though the food empties from your stomach fairly quickly I can't eat a lot if I ate something 30-60 min prior. So if I am prepping dinner and ate a serving of yogurt and fruit or a fiber bar then within an hour if it's time to eat dinner I can only manage a few bites of dinner. If I did that first thing in the morning I would be able to eat and then eat again in 45-60 minutes. -
either get a chewable version for now (you can get them online - the only chewables they seem to have in stores are calcium carbonate, and we're supposed to have calcium citrate) OR get a pill cutter and cut the tablets in half. Either should work... there's also a powdered version of calcium citrate called Upcal D (I've only seen it online). You can supposedly mix it into food or beverages (it's tasteless). It doesn't really fully dissolve, though, so I gave up putting it into beverages. I just mixed it in with yogurt or pudding.

Major Changes Are Frightening...
Arabesque replied to LizzLosingIt's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Once you get close to or into maintenance you’ll start working out what of your old favourites you can eat or want to eat again. There may be foods or drinks you say never again too, others that you may have occasionally. You might find more nutritious alternatives for some (like vegetable pastas or rice) or you’ll restrict your portion size of a particular food. I say I follow a reduce, restrict or avoid plan. I haven’t really missed anything I avoid or anything I restrict. It hasn’t stopped me going out to dine or socialising with friends & family. The foods I avoid, restrict or have reduced are ones that lead me down the path to my weight struggles so I’ve been happy to bid them farewell or to visit with only occasionally. I cut as much sugar (real, artificial & alternatives) out of my diet as I can but I still had some cake at a friend’s wedding on the weekend - just had two teaspoon. I probably won’t have any other cake, biscuits, desserts, etc. until Christmas. Processed carbs & starchy foods tend to sit heavily in my tummy too (even the vegetable pasta) so I avoid them. I drink full fat milk, cheese & yogurt. I do buy low fat milk at times but it’s usually because it has a longer use by date - LOL! I’ve never been great with carbonation so no real change there for me. If I want something bubbly like sparkling, soda or tonic water I stir it, sip it slowly & let it sit for a while so a lot of the gas escapes. I have alcohol about once a month but usually one glass over a long time. I don’t enjoy it as much. I had champagne at the wedding it just took me almost two hours to drink it. I eat about 60g of protein, 4 serves of fruit & vegetables, 2or 3 serves of dairy, 2 serves of multi/whole grain carbs every day. I haven’t taken any vitamins since 8 months post surgery (early maintenance). I have bloods taken every 3 months & all my levels come back great. But that’s my story & it’s been working for me so far. What you discover works for you will be very personal to you & how you want to live & enjoy your life. Many people continue to meet with their therapist post surgery be it to continue to work through issues or for maintenance. If you think it will help you, do it. Good luck with your surgery. -
Maintenance meal ideas?
loridee11 replied to loridee11's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thanks. I meal prepped last week with healthy meals, ate until I was full, and lost some weight. Still within my maintenance weight range so good, but need to add to what I did. I already have healthy grains like Quinoa and even some english muffins in what I did last week. I have enough of what I prepped last week to last this week as well. Turkey Taco Soup Ground Turkey Sloppy Joes on English Muffin Vegetable gratin with turkey dinner sausage Pumpkin and ground chicken chili (from the freezer) Quinoa and ground turkey stuffed bell pepper Chicken breast with pineapple, red onion and cilantro relish, and yellow squash with onions For breakfast I did coffee with a little half and half and either eggs or greek yogurt and for snacks I did popcorn and SF popsicles. This weekend I've eaten off plan so will probably be a little up tomorrow (I won't weight again until Saturday). I think maybe I'll add a little potato to some of the above to try to bump up just a bit. Open to other suggestions. I AM SO grateful for this tool, and know I am still in my honeymoon period so I'm appreciative, I just want to get this right before it gets harder to lose and easier to gain. Thanks! Lori -
Major Changes Are Frightening...
catwoman7 replied to LizzLosingIt's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
you'll eventually be able to have some of that again. It's really the first few weeks and months that are pretty restrictive. I'm quite a ways out and really don't have any restrictions anymore and haven't in a long time (by this I mean restrictions placed on me by my surgeon - those were all eventually lifted). At this point it comes down to what my stomach can tolerate. I can drink alcohol again, but I really limit it. I have a glass of wine maybe three or four times a year - but some patients drink more than that. As for carbonation, some surgeons want you to give it up forever - others are OK with it once you're a few months out as long as your stomach can tolerate it (my stomach doesn't tolerate it well so I avoid it - but some people are fine with it). I can't really do much pasta since it sits in my stomach like a ton of bricks, but to be honest, it's been so long that I don't miss it. I've had it occasionally since I've been in maintenance, but I don't eat more than about 1/2 C. I could drink full fat milk if I wanted to, although I'm not a milk drinker. I eat full fat yogurt fairly often, though. You're right about eating what and when you want to, though - there's too much of a risk of putting the weight back on if you do that. I do mostly eat what I want to now - but I monitor myself all the time to make sure it's within reason. The last thing I want is to gain all the weight back (or really, ANY weight!!) anyway, I think a lot of us had those feelings before surgery - but at some point restrictions will loosen up quite a bit and things will seem more normal. P.S. about life never being the same - well in many ways, you're right. I can do things now that I haven't been able to do in years. I no longer sit around worrying that I'm going to have a heart attack and/or never live to see my 60th birthday. I don't worry that I'll get kicked off planes for being too fat or that I'll break furniture. I never get stared at in public places or have to endure nasty comments from kids (and sometimes adults) about my weight. I just blend right into the crowd now!! I also don't have to deal with people giving me "the look" when I'm eating in public, or people looking in my grocery cart at the store (to see what morbidly obese people eat, I guess....). I LOVE my new life and I never, ever want to go back to where I was!! -
Depression after surgery?
SoulGardener replied to GreenThumb's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 5 days post-op; my diet now is 2-3 protein shakes per day, only about 450 calories. My large incision hurts. I am feeling depressed—I think it’s because I read the surgeon’s report. She stated the operation was unusually difficult due to the size of my liver, and it added an hour and a half to the operation. I spent two weeks on the pre-op diet, followed it faithfully with the exception of a little yogurt with sugar on day #6. Why didn’t the diet shrink my liver more, and how can I reverse the “severe hepatomegaly” she included in her report? Was I fat so long that my liver is now ruined? This is depressing! -
I am so f*cked. Rebound sugar and carb cravings.
ecugsplgrl replied to perfektlynrml's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have found that using flavored syrups in protein shakes, oatmeal, yogurt etc helps with cravings. I add unflavored protein and maple bourbon pecan skinny syrup. my daughter likes the peanut butter cup flavor. Idealfit has many flavor offerings for protein powder and I also looked into bariatric foodie's protein shake cookbook, available on amazon as it has recipes for ice cream, shakes and desserts. Good luck! -
Had mine 5/5. Getting tired of liquids already. Miss yogurt. Yikes! Trying to get creative and hang in there. On the other hand my surgery went great. We can do this!

Food Before and After Photos
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Tonight’s dinner was really just cleaning out the fridge. 😂 Bulgur made with flax milk, water, maple and vanilla extracts, and a smidge of maple syrup. I topped mine with lactose free Fage vanilla yogurt (has vanilla beans in it!!), dried cranberries, sliced almonds, and a drizzle of honey. JUST egg vegan egg substitute with melted cheese with sour cream and salsa. Turkey bacon that I obviously didn’t eat. 🤷♀️ Kids also had canned cinnamon rolls that I scrounged a tiny piece from. Not worth a whole roll. I’d rather have more of the bulgur if I had more room! I’ll pack the leftovers for lunch tomorrow night though. Came out to about 380 calories (not including the turkey bacon). -
Trouble standing up straight
dennydenco replied to dennydenco's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’m on stage 2 until May 18th. My stage 2 is yogurt, shakes, soup broth, and occasional very thin cream of rice. During pre op, my dietician was lousy and didn’t give any useful guidance. 20 minutes before being released from the hospital, the hospital dietician came in and laid out everything perfectly. Yes, coughing or clearing my throat is extremely painful as well. India? Are you recovering in India? -
Any April 2021 surgeries?!
LindsayS0917 replied to KidaandRoux's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Today I am one week post-op. I got to the hospital last week and got prepped and then surgery was delayed because of an emergency (which scared me a little because it was a patient from the previous day with a leak). I was the last one to go to surgery and the last one to leave so that made for a long day. I had my three bags of fluids, walked the halls and used the restroom and I was ready to walk out of there. Got to the hotel and had a popsicle and walked the halls, took my meds and slept great. I was told I had enough fluids I didn't have to focus too much on them that night. I had minimal pain except for gas pain and some nausea. Clear liquids for 5 days and all I drank was water and diet cran-pineapple. I got to start full liquids Monday and I'm already so over it. I can tolerate one shake and maybe a yogurt a day and still not reaching my water goals but I'm getting those steps in and that helps so much with the gas and even nausea. But as of today I am down a total of 23.8 lbs since pre-op and 10.6 just since surgery, my BP is normal and off meds for that and also one of my insulins. I just really don't have an appetite to even wanna try anything. -

Any April 2021 surgeries?!
Blueslily replied to KidaandRoux's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Today is my one month anniversary. Overall, I've been doing ok. However, the past few days, my little tummy is not happy in the morning. I usually have 8 oz of water while I prepare for work so I can hydrate first thing in the morning. Then I have a protein shake when I first get to work so I can get that out of the way and start the day with a nice load of protein. But, now my tummy says that a protein shake is a no no first thing in the morning. An egg is a no no. Yogurt just doesnt do it for me. So, I've tried lunch for breakfast. That works ok. BUT, now I am also hungry in the morning or something is happening with my stomach. It feels like it wants more substance. I'm on the soft foods stage. Does anyone who is also in the soft foods stage have any recommendations for breakfast? If I don't drink the protein shake first thing in the morning, I also seem to get a little behind with protein for the day. Its hard to catch up once I get really busy with work. Any suggestions? My little tummy has been a happy camper so far. Just started getting pickier during the weekend. LoL. -

Surviving the 14 day pre-surgery diet- any tips?
NovaLuna replied to Dani64519's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I, honestly, don't know how people do the full liquid diet pre-op. I thought my surgeon's diet was hard! My diet allowed 6-8oz of protein a day (either meat or yogurt, but not both), two 'healthy' fats (1/4 avocado or 1/4 cup of nuts), 1/2 cup of fruit, and all the veggies you want. I survived mostly off of a veggie soup I made. I basically lived off of it for two weeks and the two 1/4 cups of nuts I ate and the fruit and meat were like heaven lol. It was hard enough on that. But, I did lose 15 pounds on that diet and was told my liver looked great so, it worked. Just try to focus on the end goal, because the diet itself won't be fun...
