  1. Hello, on Sept 14th I had a revision from the lap-band to the Gastric Sleeve. Pre-surgery liquid diet I went from 235 to 212 on the liquid diet for about 10 days. I have only lost a total of 2 pounds, and I am 7 weeks out. I am very frustrated at this point. I am doing everything I am supposed to be doing. I could walk a little more, but other than that I am only consuming around 800 calories a day. I am not comprehending the science of this. I burn around 1600 calories a day, so why am I not losing weight? I do need to mention that I am going through menopause and had to go off of my hormones for 4 weeks after surgery but have been back on them now for 3 weeks. I was also diagnosed with a under-active thyroid about 9 months ago and am on 25MG of thyroid medication. I am at the point where I just feel no matter what I do I am not going to lose. Has anyone else experienced no weight loss right after surgery and how long did it last? I am trying to stay positive, and everyone keeps telling me not to pay attention to the scale, but I am a numbers person. I absolutely dread going to my next dietician appointment in two and half weeks because my last one which was my first post op appointment, she told me I should be losing more than 2 pounds in one month. I guess I just need to know if others have experienced this. I am about ready to give up.

    Fitness

Any one that you can enjoy & don’t mind doing regularly. Still haven’t found the one for me & I’ve tried lots of them over the years. LOL! I do a series of stretches & some basic resistance exercises at home. Mostly to support my back but also to tone my arms & keep me limber. I’m not looking at running a marathon or dead lifting my, or anyone else’s body weight. @SpartanMaker has listed all the benefits of regularly exercising but if you’re looking at exercising predominately for weight loss there is an ugly truth: exercising only accounts for about 10% of the weight you want to lose. So only about 1 of those last 10lbs you want to lose.

    Foot shrinkage :O

Absolutely. I was wearing a 10 wide or extra wide and often that didn't fit. Now I wear a 9 wide or extra wide. Unfortunately for me, my feet have always been wide. I actually just went to Fleet Feet to get new walking shoes and they do a scan and show you how wide your feet are in comparison to other women. Yeah. Mine are at top. [emoji849] That being said, they were also wider at my highest weight, so how they're just my "normal" wide width. Lol And I can see the bones and veins in my feet! I am a shoe junkie and had a lot of really nice, expensive shoes I had to get rid of, which made me a little sad, but I sure have enjoyed buying new ones. Diabetes

I want to clarify something here for those that are following along at home. A random blood sugar test can be used to indicate diabetes, but just because your blood sugar is less than 200 mg/dL, does not mean that you don't have diabetes. An analogy would be this: if you weigh over 600 pounds, you are definitely obese. Just because you weigh less than 600 pounds does not mean you are not obese. I'm diabetic, but my blood sugar was never over 200 mg/dL any time I checked. As I mentioned, it's much more common to use A1C and fasting blood glucose tests to diagnose diabetes. Fasting is good because blood sugar fluctuates throughout the day. It should be at its lowest point after an 8 to 10 hour fast, so for most people, this is first thing in the morning. The other common test most diabetics are asked to do is "postprandial". This means after a meal. Now timing after that meal is subject to some debate, but typically 2 hours after eating is used as the "standard" for diabetics. For everyone, even non-diabetics, your blood sugar will start going up roughly 10 minutes after starting to eat. While this is heavily dependent on what and how much you ate, in a non-diabetic, your postprandial blood sugar should peak within about an hour of eating and should be back to normal in 2 to 3 hours. For diabetics, this normally does not happen as fast, so the peak blood sugar concentration is typically closer to 2 hours after eating. In short, most type 2 diabetics are asked to take a postprandial reading 2 hours after eating. Both fasting and postprandial readings are used to determine how well the disease is managed. For example, a high fasting blood glucose test might indicate that your diabetes medication needs to be adjusted. Another example might be if the post prandial reading is actually lower than the fasting number. If this is a consistent trend, it might indicate reactive hypoglycemia.

    Stalls

What’s the longest anyone has experienced a stall for? My longest stall has lasted almost 2 months and I’m 7 months post op and I’m having trouble losing my last 10 lbs.
  7. I just wanted to give an update on my experience with ESG after having a VSG 8 years ago. I lost 120 pounds on the VSG and regained 60 pounds. The surgeons I talked to were hesitant to do a surgical revision due to potential complications. I did an ESG revision 5 weeks ago. Since then I lost 10% of my body weight, which is over half of what I had regained. I was very pleaded with the ESG procedure itself, I had it done on a Wednesday and was back to work on Monday. I had lost 4 weeks of work with the VSG. My program at the University of Michigan does a full 6 week liquid diet which I contribute to most of the success. I think the ESG success needs to be talked about more. It's lower risk with a speedy recovery.
  8. So I think the answer is... It depends. If you take the MFP recommended calorie counts, it should ask you if you wish to adjust your calories down for every 10 pounds you lose. If you miss changing it when it asks, you can always change it later yourself. (Though see below, as you may now be in "manual mode".) If you don't take the recommended calorie numbers and use your own numbers, then this "manual mode" won't ever ask if you you wish to change it. It says the same until you change it yourself. As far as Fitbit, if you have MFP and Fitbit linked, calories burned should be adjusted down as you lose weight. When they're linked, Fitbit should pick up your weight from MFP and will use that as part of their calculations. FYI, it bases the calories burned on heart rate, as well as height, weight, sex, and age. It might be a good idea to double check your fitbit app to make sure it's showing your latest weight. I have seen them get out of sync for some reason? Keep in mind that it's up to you if you want to add in those exercise adjustments from Fitbit to your MPF calories or not. You can change a setting to add them, or ignore them. I normally don't add them in since I think it overestimates calories burned, but the counter argument is that by adding them in, you give yourself permission to eat more on days when you really need to. For example, if you had a hard workout, or really active day.

I really second what Monsaysimaooos says. My suggestion as well is to try to get a sample pack of clear whey protein powders if you can - MyProtein in the UK does a sample box so you can try lots of different flavours. Some of then I HATED but a few of them I really, really liked. Just like Momsaysimaoos says, they basically taste like juice. I drink 4 of those a day, and that smashes my water AND my protein targets for the day because I’m taking in 2 L of water, 80 g of protein, 10 carbs and about 350 calories every day. I know I probably sound like a zealot, but they honestly make post op life SO much easier!

My surgery was 10/4, im still having trouble getting enought protein but have found these shots that have between 15 and 36 grams of protein and are only between 2 and 4 ounces each. Much easier to choke down than 10-16oz to get the same amount of protein. I have eaten some foods a few days before I got the official orders to switch to purees but that was a huge mistake. I threw up for over 24 hours after that. I tried a soft meatball for dinner then mushed up salmon and cauliflower the next day for lunch and after that I couldn't keep anything down, I was honestly afraid I messed something with the surgery up, so much so it's been almost a week and I still have been hesitant to eat even pureed fruit I've been sticking with my protein shots depending on which either 2 or 3 times a day then the rest of the day work on trying to get enough fluids to not be dehydrated. You definitely got lucky your pouch wasn't irritated or damaged, as was I, ive read some horror stories of people eating too soon and it causing a leak in their stomach pouch which can and did almost killed them in a very short time so im paranoid now and sticking to protein shots and zero Gatorade for as long as I can stand it. I read somewhere it really takes like 12 weeks for the stomach pouch to fully heal even tho the drs progress the diet doesn't mean it's fully healed so just be careful.

Oh wow! I don't even eat steak yet and I was cleared to eat whatever I wanted 2 weeks ago! Everyone has already talked about why you shouldn't have it yet, so I won't go in to that. I wanted to tell you that while I LOVED protein shakes before surgery, they were just fine for my pre-op prep. I HATED them after, it wasn't even the taste, my stomach started reacting poorly. Fortunately, I have access to Fairlife milk and Fairlife is easy on your tummy because its lactose free AND it has higher protein per serving than regular milk, its a great protein shake replacement if you are still in a mostly liquids stage and need to get your protein in! I was drinking three 8-10 oz glasses of Fairlife Lowfat milk a day, until just recently because I can now have protein bars and other solid forms of protein. The shakes or the milk are SUPER important to make sure your body gets enough protein until you are cleared for solid foods. When I was in the pureed stage my go-tos were refried beans with a little cheese and taco sauce on them (still eat that now!), cottage cheese, low fat/low sugar greek yogurt, Protein 2 O (its a protein water!), and Fairlife milk. Good job on your progress, take care of your new little tummy!
  14. HI, Has any one had stomach flu after your Gastric Sleeve? I ask because I came down with the Stomach flu on 10/26 and I am still dealing with painful cramps and Diarrhea. I ended up in the emergency room for dehydration and pain. They ct scanned and my sleeve was fine. Hydrated me up and sent me home with medicine for the cramps. Anytime a eat anything it goes straight through me. I have had stomach flu be for and it was no where near as bad as this. I am really not getting much support from my surgent on this either. I went and seen my regular doctor and same, Stomach Flu. Seems odd that I have had it for 1 week now. I'm I being overly concerned? Is this normal? I have been stressing out over this because I have lost 4 lb in one week, because everything just runs through me. Any help would be greatly appriciated Thank you!
  15. At the end of last year, my life was over eating and especially lots of sugar. I binged on little debbie cakes, guzzled icees, had many high calorie starbucks drinks and a lot of fast food. I ate and drank so unhealthy that it really was a slow suicide. It was killing me and frankly I did not care, but rather welcomed it. After several things snowballing, the first of 2022 I started to take control. I made a choice to live. I struggled to work out the pain of the past and even current circumstances which lead me to cover the pain in food, especially sugar and non nutrient dense carbs. The pain that brought me well over 400 lbs and climbing. I journaled and cried and started to stand up for myself. I also did take Ryselbus which helped give me a leg up to do the work. My husband took it but the effects wore off some because he didn’t change. I knew i needed to change if I wanted to live. Over a few months, I did the very hard mental work. I broke addictions to fast food and the sugar. Going through the process sucked. Slowly, I repeated over and over again I was worth forgiving to getting into this unhealthy state. I could heal and forge a new way. I didn’t need sugar or binging on pizza to make me feel better, I could finally start to find empathy and forgiveness for myself. Now I am two days from life changing bariatric surgery in a good place. I am ready for the huge changes this surgery brings. No longer do I binge on sugar, bread, processed food. I don’t even want to binge 90% of the time and I have self soothed myself with forgiveness and understanding the other 10%. I have changed my eating patterns, my portions, my outlook. Sugar isn’t forbidden forever, but it will now be a treat, a sometimes indulgence. It feels amazing to be able to make that choice instead of being ruled by cravings. I feel lighter from not having to carry as much of the huge burden of self loathing and self hate I used to carry. I am worth forgiving myself. I guess really why I am writing this is I know the struggle is so real. each one of you has your own issues and challenges. Each one of you is worthy of self forgiveness and embracing good things in your life. shed the tears, embrace your flaws and find a way to accept yourself and move forward in a way you want. Even if you struggle, It is worth it.

I thought it would be nice to bring the subject up of giving yourself time to heal after surgery. I've lost 10 kg since surgery on October 17th, just over 20lbs. But I noticed my clothes arent really fitting much different around my middle. So I measured. I'm losing everywhere but my tummy is actually up a few cm. (about an inch) I figure this is because im still swollen and my muscles are inflamed from the laparoscopy. I have to remind myself , I am only two weeks out. Slow and steady wins the race. I just want to share in case someone is feeling discouraged by similar experiences. it's totally normal! We just had a big surgery, even if we are feeling good. We arent healed yet.

There are plenty of other choices for protein other than protein shakes that won't rip your sutures or injure your staple line. Lots of pureed foods and soft foods like cottage cheese, beans, ricotta cheese, greek yogurt, hummus and more that are high protein. Steak after 10 days post-op is simply dangerous. A piece of steak won't make up for 10 days of having no protein at all. It is about safety. Give your stomach 6 to 8 weeks to heal. I hope your doctor explained all this to you.

  20. I know some may think I am crazy but it is 10 days after surgery and I can't stomach protein shakes since surgery so I have had no protein until today. I had some steak tips today and cut it to shreds and seems like my stomach had no issues. Many I heard wait months before they try steak. I had to because I was feeling so weak. Has anyone else ate things earlier than they were suppose to? Thanks.

  22. You can ask your clinic for advice, but it's probably going to be up to you to figure out, mainly because you have to work it around your schedule. It can seem complicated at first, but you get used to it. I take a multivitamin with iron plus an additional iron supplement, calcium 3x/day, B12, biotin, and D3. Calcium and iron are supposed to be at least 2 hours apart, and I also take a prescription thyroid medication that's supposed to be 4 hours apart from calcium and iron. I use a free app called Medisafe to track my medications and remind me. It's really useful because you can track what time you took everything, and it also tracks how many of each you have left and reminds you to refill. You can set reminders at whatever time you want. I set reminders as follows, but I usually stay ahead of schedule. 6:00 am - Thyroid prescription 10:30 am - Multivitamin with iron, B12, Biotin, D3 1:00 pm - 1st calcium 3:30 pm - iron 6:00 pm - 2nd calcium 8:30 pm - 3rd calcium I also recommend getting a pill organizer with 3 or 4 compartments for each day, where each day has its own removable box (the one I have looks like this one: https://smile.amazon.com/Organizer-Compartments-Moisture-Proof-Medication-Supplements/dp/B07Q9JSHMP). I distribute my pills in that once per week, and then I can just grab the box for the day.

    My story

I had the sleeve in September 2020 after having struggled with my weight for years and trying to lose it on my own. I am 56 and a diabetic. My A1c has went from 7.4 to 5.7 since my surgery. I had to have a hernia repair for the second time along with the sleeve and things were going great. I was losing for the first year, around 65 pounds. Then, I found out that I had diverticulosis and have had diverticulitis4 times in less than a year. My hernia came back along with an umbilical hernia and had a gallbladder that had to be removed 18 months after my sleeve. In the 2 years since my surgery, my acid reflux has never went away and taking Prilosec and Pepcid twice a day. I also just got done with prolapse surgeries and hoping this is my last surgery. I have been having bad cravings and not losing, but gained back 10 pounds. My surgeon decided to try Saxenda to see if it would help and it has helped me lose 12 pounds in 12 weeks. Hoping that continue to lose and my health improve. Sent from my SM-S908U using BariatricPal mobile app
